Effect of Star Rotation Rates on the Characteristics of Energetic Particle Events

Recent detection of superflares on solar-type stars by Kepler mission raised a possibility that they can be associated with energetic coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and energetic particle events (SEPs). These space weather events can impact habitability of exoplanets around these stars. Here we use the improved Particle Acceleration and Transport in the Heliosphere (iPATH) model, to model the time intensity profile and spectrum of SEPs accelerated at CME-driven shocks from stars of different ages traced by their rotation rates. We consider a solar-like (G-type) star with 6 different rotation rates varying from 0.5 to 3.0 times rotation speed of the sun. In all 6 cases, a fast CME is launched with the same speed of 1500 km/sec and the resulting time intensity profiles at 3 locations and and energy spectra at 5 locations at 1 AU are obtained. The maximum particle energy at the shock front as a function of r is also shown. Our results suggest that within 0.8 AU the maximum particle energy at the shock front increases with the rotation rate of the star. However, event integrated spectra for the five selected locations along the CME path show complicated patterns. This is because the Parker magnetic field for rapidly rotating stars is more tightly winded. Our results can be used in estimating the radiation environments of terrestrial-type exoplanets around solar-type stars.

Bidirectional RNN-based Few-shot Training for Detecting Multi-stage Attack

"Feint Attack", as a new type of APT attack, has become the focus of attention. It adopts a multi-stage attacks mode which can be concluded as a combination of virtual attacks and real attacks. Under the cover of virtual attacks, real attacks can achieve the real purpose of the attacker, as a result, it often caused huge losses inadvertently. However, to our knowledge, all previous works use common methods such as Causal-Correlation or Cased-based to detect outdated multi-stage attacks. Few attentions have been paid to detect the "Feint Attack", because the difficulty of detection lies in the diversification of the concept of "Feint Attack" and the lack of professional datasets, many detection methods ignore the semantic relationship in the attack. Aiming at the existing challenge, this paper explores a new method to solve the problem. In the attack scenario, the fuzzy clustering method based on attribute similarity is used to mine multi-stage attack chains. Then we use a few-shot deep learning algorithm (SMOTE&CNN-SVM) and bidirectional Recurrent Neural Network model (Bi-RNN) to obtain the "Feint Attack" chains. "Feint Attack" is simulated by the real attack inserted in the normal causal attack chain, and the addition of the real attack destroys the causal relationship of the original attack chain. So we used Bi-RNN coding to obtain the hidden feature of "Feint Attack" chain. In the end, our method achieved the goal to detect the "Feint Attack" accurately by using the LLDoS1.0 and LLDoS2.0 of DARPA2000 and CICIDS2017 of Canadian Institute for Cybersecurity.

Statistical analysis of interplanetary magnetic field path lengths from solar energetic electron events observed by WIND

We calculate the interplanetary magnetic field path lengths traveled by electrons in solar electron events detected by the WIND 3DP instrument from $1994$ to $2016$. The velocity dispersion analysis method is applied for electrons at energies of $\sim$ $27$ keV to $310$ keV. Previous velocity dispersion analyses employ the onset times, which are often affected by instrumental effects and the pre-existing background flux, leading to large uncertainties. We propose a new method here. Instead of using the peak or onset time, we apply the velocity dispersion analysis to the times that correspond to the rising phase of the fluxes that are a fraction, $η$, of the peak flux. We perform statistical analysis on selected events whose calculated path lengths have uncertainties smaller than $0.1$ AU. The mean and standard deviation, ($μ$, $σ$), of the calculated path lengths corresponding to $η=$ $3/4$, $1/2$, and $1/3$ of the peak flux is ($1.17$ AU, $0.17$ AU), ($1.11$ AU, $0.14$ AU), and ($1.06$ AU, $0.15$ AU). The distribution of the calculated path lengths is also well fitted by a Gaussian distribution for the $η=3/4$ and $1/3$ cases. These results suggest that in these electron events the interplanetary magnetic field topology is close to the nominal Parker spiral with little field line meandering. Our results have important implications for particles' perpendicular diffusion.

Audio De-identification: A New Entity Recognition Task

Named Entity Recognition (NER) has been mostly studied in the context of written text. Specifically, NER is an important step in de-identification (de-ID) of medical records, many of which are recorded conversations between a patient and a doctor. In such recordings, audio spans with personal information should be redacted, similar to the redaction of sensitive character spans in de-ID for written text. The application of NER in the context of audio de-identification has yet to be fully investigated. To this end, we define the task of audio de-ID, in which audio spans with entity mentions should be detected. We then present our pipeline for this task, which involves Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), NER on the transcript text, and text-to-audio alignment. Finally, we introduce a novel metric for audio de-ID and a new evaluation benchmark consisting of a large labeled segment of the Switchboard and Fisher audio datasets and detail our pipeline's results on it.

Period spacings of $γ$ Doradus pulsators in the \textit{Kepler} field: Rossby and gravity modes in 82 stars

Rossby modes are the oscillations in a rotating fluid, whose restoring force is the Coriolis force. They provide an additional diagnostic to understand the rotation of stars, which complicates asteroseismic modelling. We report 82 $γ$\,Doradus stars for which clear period spacing patterns of both gravity and Rossby modes have been detected. The period spacings of both show a quasi-linear relation with the pulsation period but the slope is negative for the gravity modes and positive for the Rossby modes. Most Rossby modes have $k=-2, m=-1$. For only one star a series of $k=-1,m=-1$ modes is seen. For each pattern, the mean pulsation period, the mean period spacing, and the slope are measured. We find that the slope correlates with the mean period for Rossby mode patterns. The traditional approximation of rotation is used to measure the near-core rotation rate, assuming the star rotates rigidly. We report the near-core rotation rates, the asymptotic period spacings, and the radial orders of excited modes of these 82 main-sequence stars. The near-core rotation rates lie between $0.6\,\mathrm{d^{-1}}$ and $2.3\,\mathrm{d^{-1}}$. Six stars show surface rotation modulations, among which only KIC\,3341457 shows differential rotation while the other five stars have uniform rotations. The radial orders of excited modes show different distributions for the dipole and quadrupole gravity modes versus the Rossby modes.

Resolving the degeneracy in top quark Yukawa coupling with Higgs pair production

The top quark Yukawa coupling ($y_t$) can be modified by two dimension-six operators $\mathcal{O}_H$ and $\mathcal{O}_y$ with the corresponding Wilson coefficients $c_H$ and $c_y$, whose individual contribution cannot be distinguished by measuring $y_t$ alone. However, such a degeneracy can be resolved with Higgs boson pair production. In this work we explore the potential of resolving the degeneracy of the unknown Wilson coefficients $c_H$ and $c_y$ at the 14~TeV LHC and the 100~TeV hadron colliders. Combining the information of the single Higgs production, $t\bar{t}h$ associated production and Higgs pair production, the individual contribution of $c_H$ and $c_y$ to $y_t$ can be separated. Regardless of the value of $c_H$, the Higgs pair production can give a strong constraint on $c_y$ at the 100 TeV hadron collider. We further show that it is possible to differentiate various $c_y$ and $c_t$ values predicted in several benchmark models.

Prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with top quark pair at the LHC

In this work, we investigate the prompt $J/ψ$ production in associated with top quark pair to leading order in the nonrelativistic QCD factorization formalism at the LHC with $\sqrt{s} =13$ TeV. In addition to the contribution from direct $J/ψ$ production, we also include the indirect contribution from the directly produced heavier charmmonia $χ_{cJ}$ and $ψ^\prime$. We present the numerical results for the total and differential cross sections and find that the $\sideset{^3}{^{(8)}_1}{\mathop{S}}$ states give the dominant contributions. The prompt $t\bar t J/ψ$ signatures at the LHC are analyzed in the tetralepton channel $pp\to (t\to W^+(\ell^+ν)b) (\bar t \to W^-(\ell^- \bar ν)\bar b) (J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-)$ and trilepton channel $pp\to (t\to W(q q^\prime)b) ( t \to W(\ell ν) b) (J/ψ\toμ^+μ^-)$, with the $J/ψ$ mesons decaying into muon pair, and the top quarks decaying leptonically or hadronically. We find that $t\bar t J/ψ$ proudction can be potentially detected at the LHC, whose measurement is useful to test the heavy quarkonium production mechanism.

Initial state radiation correction and its effect to data-taking scheme for $σ^{\mathrm{B}}(e^+e^-\to ZH)$ measurement

The measurement of Born cross section of $e^+e^-\to ZH$ process is one of the major goals of the future Circular Electron Positron Collider, which may reach a precision of 0.5%. Such unprecedented precision must be guaranteed by both theoretical and experimental sides, such as the calculations of high order corrections, the knowledge of the $σ^{\mathrm{B}}(e^+e^-\to ZH)$ line shape. The uncertainty of radiative correction factor due to lack of knowledge of the $σ^{\mathrm{B}}(e^+e^-\to ZH)$ line shape is evaluated in this work. Therefore, the dedicated data-taking schemes are proposed in order to precisely calculate the ISR correction factor.

Nodal surface and persistent spin texture in a Weyl semimetal without mirror symmetry

By utilizing symmetry analysis and electronic structure calculations, we investigated the low-temperature orthorhombic phase of Ag$_{2}$Se in ${\cal SG}$~17. In addition to the discovery of a nodal plane at $k_{z}=π$ protected by the joint operation of time-reversal (${\cal T}$) and the 2-fold screw rotation $S_{2z}$, we found 24 Weyl points mainly residing at the $k_{y}=0$ plane with notable Fermi arc and large quasiparticle interference pattern (QPI). Due to the absence of mirror symmetry, a pair of Weyl points with opposite chirality reside at different binding energies, which makes this system an excellent material candidate for realizing the novel chiral anomaly related phenomenon, such as the quantized circular photogalvanic and the chiral magnetic effects. Furthermore, we also reveal the striking spin textures at $k_{z}=π$ plane which demonstrates, in a large region of the surface Brillouin Zone, a direction-selective spin polarization, which has a strong implication to spintronic applications.

FRNET: Flattened Residual Network for Infant MRI Skull Stripping

Skull stripping for brain MR images is a basic segmentation task. Although many methods have been proposed, most of them focused mainly on the adult MR images. Skull stripping for infant MR images is more challenging due to the small size and dynamic intensity changes of brain tissues during the early ages. In this paper, we propose a novel CNN based framework to robustly extract brain region from infant MR image without any human assistance. Specifically, we propose a simplified but more robust flattened residual network architecture (FRnet). We also introduce a new boundary loss function to highlight ambiguous and low contrast regions between brain and non-brain regions. To make the whole framework more robust to MR images with different imaging quality, we further introduce an artifact simulator for data augmentation. We have trained and tested our proposed framework on a large dataset (N=343), covering newborns to 48-month-olds, and obtained performance better than the state-of-the-art methods in all age groups.

Spherical U-Net on Cortical Surfaces: Methods and Applications

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been providing the state-of-the-art performance for learning-related problems involving 2D/3D images in Euclidean space. However, unlike in the Euclidean space, the shapes of many structures in medical imaging have a spherical topology in a manifold space, e.g., brain cortical or subcortical surfaces represented by triangular meshes, with large inter-subject and intrasubject variations in vertex number and local connectivity. Hence, there is no consistent neighborhood definition and thus no straightforward convolution/transposed convolution operations for cortical/subcortical surface data. In this paper, by leveraging the regular and consistent geometric structure of the resampled cortical surface mapped onto the spherical space, we propose a novel convolution filter analogous to the standard convolution on the image grid. Accordingly, we develop corresponding operations for convolution, pooling, and transposed convolution for spherical surface data and thus construct spherical CNNs. Specifically, we propose the Spherical U-Net architecture by replacing all operations in the standard U-Net with their spherical operation counterparts. We then apply the Spherical U-Net to two challenging and neuroscientifically important tasks in infant brains: cortical surface parcellation and cortical attribute map development prediction. Both applications demonstrate the competitive performance in the accuracy, computational efficiency, and effectiveness of our proposed Spherical U-Net, in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods.

Magnetic exchange induced Weyl state in a semimetal EuCd2Sb2

Magnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) bearing long-time pursuing are still very rare. We herein identified magnetic exchange induced Weyl state in EuCd2Sb2, a semimetal in type IV magnetic space group, via performing high magnetic field (B) magneto-transport measurements and ab initio calculations. For the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure of EuCd2Sb2, external B larger than 3.2 T can align Eu spins to be fully polarized along the c-axis and consequently drive the system into a ferromagnetic (FM) state. Measurements up to B ~ 55 T revealed a striking Shubnikov-de Hass oscillation imposed by a nontrivial Berry phase. We unveiled a phase transition from a small-gap AFM topological insulator into a FM WSM in which Weyl points emerged along the Γ-Z path. Fermi arcs on (100) and (010) surfaces are also revealed. The results pave a way towards realization of various topological states in a single material through magnetic exchange manipulation.

Production of $Z_c(3900$) and $Z_c(4020)$ in $B_c$ decay

In the present work, we propose to search the charmonium-like states $Z_c(3900$) and $Z_c(4020)$ in the $B_c$ decay. In an effective Lagrangian approach, the branching ratios of $B_c^+ \to Z_c(3900)^+ π^0$ and $B_c^+\to Z_c (4020)^+ π^0$ are estimated to be of order of $10^{-4}$ and $10^{-7}$, respectively. The large production rate of $Z_c(3900)$ could provide an important source of the production of $Z_c(3900)$ from the semi-exclusive decay of $b$-flavored hadrons reported by D0 Collaboration, which can be tested by the exclusive measurements in LHCb.

Parquet approximation for molecules: spectrum and optical conductivity of the Pariser-Parr-Pople model

We study a simple model system for the conjugated $π$-bonds in benzene, the Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) model, within the parquet approximation (PA), exemplifying the prospects of the PA for molecules. Advantages of the PA are the polynomial scaling with the number of orbitals, and the natural calculation of one- and two-particle spectral functions as well as of response and correlation functions. We find large differences in the electronic correlations in the PPP model compared to a Hubbard model with only local interactions. The quasiparticle renormalization (or mass enhancement) is much weaker in the PPP than in the Hubbard model, but the static part of the self-energy enhances the band gap of the former. Furthermore, the vertex corrections to the optical conductivity are much more important in the PPP model. Because non-local interactions strongly alter the self-energy, we conclude that the PA is more suitable for calculating conjugated $π$-bonds in molecules than single site dynamical mean-field theory.

Precision Higgs Physics at CEPC

The discovery of the Higgs boson with its mass around 125 GeV by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations marked the beginning of a new era in high energy physics. The Higgs boson will be the subject of extensive studies of the ongoing LHC program. At the same time, lepton collider based Higgs factories have been proposed as a possible next step beyond the LHC, with its main goal to precisely measure the properties of the Higgs boson and probe potential new physics associated with the Higgs boson. The Circular Electron Positron Collider~(CEPC) is one of such proposed Higgs factories. The CEPC is an $e^+e^-$ circular collider proposed by and to be hosted in China. Located in a tunnel of approximately 100~km in circumference, it will operate at a center-of-mass energy of 240~GeV as the Higgs factory. In this paper, we present the first estimates on the precision of the Higgs boson property measurements achievable at the CEPC and discuss implications of these measurements.

CP-violating Dark Photon Interaction

We introduce a scenario for CP-violating (CPV) dark photon interactions in the context of non-abelian kinetic mixing. Assuming an effective field theory that extends the Standard Model (SM) field content with an additional $U(1)$ gauge boson ($X$) and a $SU(2)_L$ triplet scalar, we show that there exist both CP-conserving and CPV dimension five operators involving these new degrees of freedom and the SM $SU(2)_L$ gauge bosons. The former yields kinetic mixing between the $X$ and the neutral $SU(2)_L$ gauge boson (yielding the dark photon), while the latter induces CPV interactions of the dark photon with the SM particles. We discuss experimental probes of these interactions using searches for permanent electric dipole moments (EDMs) and di-jet correlations in high-energy $pp$ collisions. It is found that the experimental limit on the electron EDM currently gives the strongest restriction on the CPV interaction. In principle, high energy $pp$ collisions provide a complementary probe through azimuthal angular correlations of the two forward tagging jets in vector boson fusion. In practice, observation of the associated CPV asymmetry is likely to be challenging.

Fully Heavy Tetraquark ${bb \bar c \bar c}$: Lifetimes and Weak Decays

We study the lifetime and weak decays of the full-heavy S-wave $0^+$ tetraquark $T^{\{bb\}}_{\{\bar c\bar c\}}$. Using the operator product expansion rooted in heavy quark expansion, we find a rather short lifetime, at the order $(0.1-0.3)\times 10^{-12}s$ depending on the inputs. With the flavor SU(3) symmetry, we then construct the effective Hamiltonian at the hadron level, and derive relations between decay widths of different channels. According to the electro-weak effective operators, we classify different decay modes, and make a collection of the golden channels, such as $T_{\{\bar c \bar c\}}^{\{bb\}}\to B^- K^0 B_c^-$ for the charm quark decay and $T_{\{\bar c \bar c\}}^{\{bb\}}\to B^-D^-$ for the bottom quark decay. Our results for the lifetime and golden channels are helpful to search for the fully-heavy tetraquark in future experiments.

Deep Morphological Simplification Network (MS-Net) for Guided Registration of Brain Magnetic Resonance Images

Objective: Deformable brain MR image registration is challenging due to large inter-subject anatomical variation. For example, the highly complex cortical folding pattern makes it hard to accurately align corresponding cortical structures of individual images. In this paper, we propose a novel deep learning way to simplify the difficult registration problem of brain MR images. Methods: We train a morphological simplification network (MS-Net), which can generate a "simple" image with less anatomical details based on the "complex" input. With MS-Net, the complexity of the fixed image or the moving image under registration can be reduced gradually, thus building an individual (simplification) trajectory represented by MS-Net outputs. Since the generated images at the ends of the two trajectories (of the fixed and moving images) are so simple and very similar in appearance, they are easy to register. Thus, the two trajectories can act as a bridge to link the fixed and the moving images, and guide their registration. Results: Our experiments show that the proposed method can achieve highly accurate registration performance on different datasets (i.e., NIREP, LPBA, IBSR, CUMC, and MGH). Moreover, the method can be also easily transferred across diverse image datasets and obtain superior accuracy on surface alignment. Conclusion and Significance: We propose MS-Net as a powerful and flexible tool to simplify brain MR images and their registration. To our knowledge, this is the first work to simplify brain MR image registration by deep learning, instead of estimating deformation field directly.
