Coils and the Electromagnet Used in the Joule Balance at the NIM

In the joule balance developed at National Institute of Metrology (NIM), the dynamic phase of a watt balance is replaced by the mutual inductance measurement in an attempt to provide an alternative method for the kg redefinition. But for this method a rather large current in the exciting coil, is needed to offer the necessary magnetic field in the force weighing phase, and the coil heating becomes an important uncertainty source. To reduce coil heating, a new coil system, in which a ferromagnetic material is used to increase the magnetic field was designed recently. But adopting the ferromagnetic material brings the difficulty from the nonlinear characteristic of material. This problem can be removed by measuring the magnetic flux linkage difference of the suspended coil at two vertical positions directly to replace the mutual inductance parameter. Some systematic effects of this magnet are discussed.

Dressing Actions on Proper Definite Affine Spheres

We will first clarify the loop group formulations for both hyperbolic and elliptic definite affine spheres in R^3. Then we classify the rational elements with 3 poles or 6 poles in a real twisted loop group, and compute dressing actions of them on such surfaces. Some new examples with pictures will be produced at last.

Stochastic Reactive Power Management in Microgrids with Renewables

Distribution microgrids are being challenged by reverse power flows and voltage fluctuations due to renewable generation, demand response, and electric vehicles. Advances in photovoltaic (PV) inverters offer new opportunities for reactive power management provided PV owners have the right investment incentives. In this context, reactive power compensation is considered here as an ancillary service. Accounting for the increasing time-variability of distributed generation and demand, a stochastic reactive power compensation scheme is developed. Given uncertain active power injections, an online reactive control scheme is devised. This scheme is distribution-free and relies solely on power injection data. Reactive injections are updated using the Lagrange multipliers of a second-order cone program. Numerical tests on an industrial 47-bus microgrid and the residential IEEE 123-bus feeder corroborate the reactive power management efficiency of the novel stochastic scheme over its deterministic alternative, as well as its capability to track variations in solar generation and household demand.

Tunable Cobalt Vacancies and Related Properties in LaCoxAs2

The origin of transition metal vacancies and their effects on the properties of ThCr2Si2-type compounds have been less studied and poorly understood. Here we carefully investigate the structure, physical properties, and electronic structure for a series of lanthanum cobalt arsenides with nominal composition of LaCoxAs2 (1.6 < = x < = 2.1). It is revealed that the occupancy of Co can be tuned between 1.98(1) and 1.61(1). The structural analyses based on X-ray and neutron diffractions show the existence of Co vacancies results from charge balance due to the formation of bond between As-As. These Co vacancies affect the magnetic and electrical properties greatly, adjusting the Curie temperature from 205 to 47 K and increasing the resistivity by more than 100%. First principles calculations indicate that the Co vacancies weaken the spin polarization and reduce the density of states at the Fermi level, resulting in decreased Curie temperature and increased resistivity, respectively. Our results address the importance of transition metal vacancies in ThCr2Si2-type materials and offer a reliable route to tune the magnetism of ThCr2Si2-type structure.

Learning Invariant Color Features for Person Re-Identification

Matching people across multiple camera views known as person re-identification, is a challenging problem due to the change in visual appearance caused by varying lighting conditions. The perceived color of the subject appears to be different with respect to illumination. Previous works use color as it is or address these challenges by designing color spaces focusing on a specific cue. In this paper, we propose a data driven approach for learning color patterns from pixels sampled from images across two camera views. The intuition behind this work is that, even though pixel values of same color would be different across views, they should be encoded with the same values. We model color feature generation as a learning problem by jointly learning a linear transformation and a dictionary to encode pixel values. We also analyze different photometric invariant color spaces. Using color as the only cue, we compare our approach with all the photometric invariant color spaces and show superior performance over all of them. Combining with other learned low-level and high-level features, we obtain promising results in ViPER, Person Re-ID 2011 and CAVIAR4REID datasets.

Orbit optimization and time delay interferometry for inclined ASTROD-GW formation with half-year precession-period

ASTROD-GW (ASTROD [Astrodynamical Space Test of Relativity using Optical Devices] optimized for Gravitational Wave detection) is a gravitational-wave mission with the aim of detecting gravitational waves from massive black holes, extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs) and galactic compact binaries, together with testing relativistic gravity and probing dark energy and cosmology. Mission orbits of the 3 spacecrafts forming a nearly equilateral triangular array are chosen to be near the Sun-Earth Lagrange points L3, L4 and L5. The 3 spacecrafts range interferometrically with one another with arm length about 260 million kilometers. For 260 times longer arm length, the detection sensitivity of ASTROD-GW is 260 fold better than that of eLISA/NGO in the lower frequency region by assuming the same acceleration noise. Therefore, ASTROD-GW will be a better cosmological probe. In previous papers, we have worked out the time delay interferometry (TDI) for the ecliptic formation. To resolve the reflection ambiguity about the ecliptic plane in source position determination, we have changed the basic formation into slightly inclined formation with half-year precession-period. In this paper, we optimize a set of 10-year inclined ASTROD-GW mission orbits numerically using ephemeris framework starting at June 21, 2035, including cases of inclination angle is 0° (no inclination), 0.5°, 1.0°, 1.5°, 2.0°, 2.5° and 3.0°. We simulate the time delays of the first and second generation TDI configurations for the different inclinations, and compare/analyse the numerical results to attain the requisite sensitivity of ASTROD-GW by suppressing laser frequency noise below the secondary noises. To explicate our calculation process for different inclination cases, we take the 1.0° as example to show the orbit optimization and TDI simulation.

Growth of (NaxKy)FezSe2 crystals by chlorides flux at low temperatures

(NaxKy)FezSe2 crystals are prepared by Na, Fe, and Se as starting materials in NaCl/KCl flux at low temperatures~720 °C. It is found that K is more preferred than Na to enter in between FeSe layers and forms the phase. Thus-obtained crystals contain more superconducting phase in volume fraction and exhibit new features in transport property. Our results provide a promising new synthetic route for preparing quality crystals of iron selenide superconductors.

Crowds on Wall Street: Extracting Value from Social Investing Platforms

For decades, the world of financial advisors has been dominated by large investment banks such as Goldman Sachs. In recent years, user-contributed investment services such as SeekingAlpha and StockTwits have grown to millions of users. In this paper, we seek to understand the quality and impact of content on social investment platforms, by empirically analyzing complete datasets of SeekingAlpha articles (9 years) and StockTwits messages (4 years). We develop sentiment analysis tools and correlate contributed content to the historical performance of relevant stocks. While SeekingAlpha articles and StockTwits messages provide minimal correlation to stock performance in aggregate, a subset of authors contribute more valuable (predictive) content. We show that these authors can be identified via both empirical methods or by user interactions, and investments using their analysis significantly outperform broader markets. Finally, we conduct a user survey that sheds light on users views of SeekingAlpha content and stock manipulation.

The Influence of Longitudinal Space Charge Fields on the Modulation Process of Coherent Electron Cooling

The initial modulation in the scheme for Coherent electron Cooling (CeC) rests on the screening of the ion charge by electrons. However, in a CeC system with a bunched electron beam, inevitably, a long-range longitudinal space charge force is introduced. For a relatively dense electron beam, its force can be comparable to, or even greater than the attractive force from the ions. Hence, the influence of the space charge field on the modulation process could be important. If the 3-D Debye lengths are much smaller than the extension of the electron bunch, the modulation induced by the ion happens locally. Then, in that case, we can approximate the long-range longitudinal space charge field as a uniform electric field across the region. As detailed in this paper, we developed an analytical model to study the dynamics of ion shielding in the presence of a uniform electric field. We solved the coupled Vlasov-Poisson equation system for an infinite anisotropic electron plasma, and estimated the influences of the longitudinal space charge field to the modulation process for the experimental proof of the CeC principle at RHIC.

On Compensating Tune Spread Induced by Space Charge in Bunched Beams

Space charge effects play significant role in modern-day accelerators. These effects frequently constrain attainable beam parameters in an accelerator - or - in an accelerator chain. They also could limit the luminosity of hadron colliders operating either at low energies or with a sub-TeV high brightness hadron beams. A number of schemes for compensating space charge effects in a coasting (e.g. continuous) hadron beam were proposed and some of them had been tested. But all of these methods do not address the issue of tune spread compensation of a bunched hadron beam, e.g. the tune shift dependence on the longitudinal position inside the bunch. In this paper we propose and evaluate a novel idea of using a co-propagating electron bunch with miss-matched longitudinal velocity to compensate the space charge induced tune-shift and tune spread. We present a number of practical examples of such system.

Modulator simulations for coherent electron cooling using a variable density electron beam

Increasing the luminosity of relativistic hadron beams is critical for the advancement of nuclear physics. Coherent electron cooling (CEC) promises to cool such beams significantly faster than alternative methods. We present simulations of 40 GeV/nucleon Au+79 ions through the first (modulator) section of a coherent electron cooler. In the modulator, the electron beam copropagates with the ion beam, which perturbs the electron beam density and velocity via anisotropic Debye shielding. In contrast to previous simulations, where the electron density was constant in time and space, here the electron beam has a finite transverse extent, and undergoes focusing by quadrupoles as it passes through the modulator. The peak density in the modulator increases by a factor of 3, as specified by the beam Twiss parameters. The inherently 3D particle and field dynamics is modeled with the parallel VSim framework using a $δ$f PIC algorithm. Physical parameters are taken from the CEC proof-of-principle experiment under development at Brookhaven National Lab.

Power Scheduling of Kalman Filtering in Wireless Sensor Networks with Data Packet Drops

For a wireless sensor network (WSN) with a large number of low-cost, battery-driven, multiple transmission power leveled sensor nodes of limited transmission bandwidth, then conservation of transmission resources (power and bandwidth) is of paramount importance. Towards this end, this paper considers the problem of power scheduling of Kalman filtering for general linear stochastic systems subject to data packet drops (over a packet-dropping wireless network). The transmission of the acquired measurement from the sensor to the remote estimator is realized by sequentially transmitting every single component of the measurement to the remote estimator in one time period. The sensor node decides separately whether to use a high or low transmission power to communicate every component to the estimator across a packet-dropping wireless network based on the rule that promotes the power scheduling with the least impact on the estimator mean squared error. Under the customary assumption that the predicted density is (approximately) Gaussian, leveraging the statistical distribution of sensor data, the mechanism of power scheduling, the wireless network effect and the received data, the minimum mean squared error estimator is derived. By investigating the statistical convergence properties of the estimation error covariance, we establish, for general linear systems, both the sufficient condition and the necessary condition guaranteeing the stability of the estimator.

Moving-Horizon Dynamic Power System State Estimation Using Semidefinite Relaxation

Accurate power system state estimation (PSSE) is an essential prerequisite for reliable operation of power systems. Different from static PSSE, dynamic PSSE can exploit past measurements based on a dynamical state evolution model, offering improved accuracy and state predictability. A key challenge is the nonlinear measurement model, which is often tackled using linearization, despite divergence and local optimality issues. In this work, a moving-horizon estimation (MHE) strategy is advocated, where model nonlinearity can be accurately captured with strong performance guarantees. To mitigate local optimality, a semidefinite relaxation approach is adopted, which often provides solutions close to the global optimum. Numerical tests show that the proposed method can markedly improve upon an extended Kalman filter (EKF)-based alternative.

Appearance of Mobility Edge in Self-Dual Quasiperiodic Lattices

Within the framework of the Aubry-Andre model, one kind of self-dual quasiperiodic lattice, it is known that a sharp transition occurs from \emph{all} eigenstates being extended to \emph{all} being localized. The common perception for this type of quasiperiodic lattice is that the self-duality excludes the appearance of the mobility edge separating localized from extended states. In this work, we propose a multi-chromatic quasiperiodic lattice model retaining the self-duality identical to the Aubry-Andre model, and demonstrate numerically the occurrence of the localization-delocalization transition with definite mobility edges. This contrasts with the Aubry-Andre model. As a result, the diffusion of wave packet exhibits a transition from ballistic to diffusive motion, and back to ballistic motion. We point out that experimental realizations of the predicted transition can be accessed with light waves in photonic lattices and matter waves in optical lattices.

Replacing Network Coordinate System with Internet Delay Matrix Service (IDMS): A Case Study in Chinese Internet

Network distance (Round Trip Time, RTT) is an important parameter for many Internet distributed systems to optimize their performances. Network Coordinate System (NCS) is assumed as a lightweight and scalable mechanism to predict network distance between any two Internet hosts without explicit measurements. Though many NCSes have been proposed in the literatures, they are not satisfactory in terms of accuracy. In this paper, we propose to use delay matrix to replace the NCS. This paper makes three contributions. First, we show that not all the hosts need an independent network coordinate (NC). On the contrary, most hosts can be represented as one or several nodes in NCS. Second, we present an Internet Delay Matrix Service (IDMS) for representing network distances without explicit measurements in Internet. Third, we describe two delay matrices up to date delay matrix (UDM) and previous delay matrices (PDM) for representing the network distances. Extensive simulations on our collected Chinese Internet data sets show that IDMS is an accurate, efficient, scalable and practical method for Chinese Internet. The performance of IDMS is better than other existing approaches.

The LAMOST Survey of Background Quasars in the Vicinity of the Andromeda and Triangulum Galaxies -- II. Results from the Commissioning Observations and the Pilot Surveys

We present new quasars discovered in the vicinity of the Andromeda and Triangulum galaxies with the LAMOST during the 2010 and 2011 observational seasons. Quasar candidates are selected based on the available SDSS, KPNO 4 m telescope, XSTPS optical, and WISE near infrared photometric data. We present 509 new quasars discovered in a stripe of ~135 sq. deg from M31 to M33 along the Giant Stellar Stream in the 2011 pilot survey datasets, and also 17 new quasars discovered in an area of ~100 sq. deg that covers the central region and the southeastern halo of M31 in the 2010 commissioning datasets. These 526 new quasars have i magnitudes ranging from 15.5 to 20.0, redshifts from 0.1 to 3.2. They represent a significant increase of the number of identified quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33. There are now 26, 62 and 139 known quasars in this region of the sky with i magnitudes brighter than 17.0, 17.5 and 18.0 respectively, of which 5, 20 and 75 are newly-discovered. These bright quasars provide an invaluable collection with which to probe the kinematics and chemistry of the ISM/IGM in the Local Group of galaxies. A total of 93 quasars are now known with locations within 2.5 deg of M31, of which 73 are newly discovered. Tens of quasars are now known to be located behind the Giant Stellar Stream, and hundreds behind the extended halo and its associated substructures of M31. The much enlarged sample of known quasars in the vicinity of M31 and M33 can potentially be utilized to construct a perfect astrometric reference frame to measure the minute PMs of M31 and M33, along with the PMs of substructures associated with the Local Group of galaxies. Those PMs are some of the most fundamental properties of the Local Group.

Superconducting Phases in Potassium-Intercalated Iron Selenides

The ubiquitous coexistence of majority insulating 245 phases and minority superconducting (SC) phases in AxFe2-ySe2 (A = K, Cs, Rb, Tl/Rb, Tl/K) formed by high-temperature routes makes pure SC phases highly desirable for studying the intrinsic properties of this SC family. Here we report that there are at least two pure SC phases, KxFe2Se2(NH3)y (x ~ 0.3 and 0.6), determined mainly by potassium concentration in the K-intercalated iron selenides formed via the liquid ammonia route. K0.3Fe2Se2(NH3)0.47 corresponds to the 44 K phase with lattice constant c = 15.56(1) angstroms and K0.6Fe2Se2(NH3)0.37 to the 30 K phase with c = 14.84(1) angstroms. With higher potassium doping, the 44 K phase can be converted into the 30 K phase. NH3 has little, if any, effect on superconductivity. Thus, the conclusions should apply to both K0.3Fe2Se2 and K0.6Fe2Se2 SC phases. K0.3Fe2Se2(NH3)0.47 and K0.6Fe2Se2(NH3)0.37 stand out among known superconductors as their structures are stable only at particular potassium doping levels, and hence the variation of Tc with doping is not dome-like.

Numerical simulation of time delay interferometry for eLISA/NGO

eLISA/NGO is a new gravitational wave detection proposal with arm length of 10^6 km and one interferometer down-scaled from LISA. Just like LISA and ASTROD-GW, in order to attain the requisite sensitivity for eLISA/NGO, laser frequency noise must be suppressed to below the secondary noises such as the optical path noise, acceleration noise etc. In previous papers, we have performed the numerical simulation of the time delay interferometry (TDI) for LISA and ASTROD-GW with one arm dysfunctional by using the CGC 2.7 ephemeris. The results are well below their respective limits which the laser frequency noise is required to be suppressed. In this paper, we follow the same procedure to simulate the time delay interferometry numerically. To do this, we work out a set of 1000-day optimized mission orbits of the eLISA/NGO spacecraft starting at January 1st, 2021 using the CGC 2.7 ephemeris framework. We then use the numerical method to calculate the residual optical path differences in the second-generation TDI solutions as in our previous papers. The maximum path length difference, for all configurations calculated, is below 13 mm (43 ps). It is well below the limit which the laser frequency noise is required to be suppressed for eLISA/NGO. We compare and discuss the resulting differences due to the different arm lengths for various mission proposals -- eLISA/NGO, an NGO-LISA-type mission with a nominal arm length of 2 x 10^6 km, LISA and ASTROD-GW.
