Robust Sub-Meter Level Indoor Localization With a Single WiFi Access Point-Regression Versus Classification

Precise indoor localization is an increasingly demanding requirement for various emerging applications, like Virtual/Augmented reality and personalized advertising. Current indoor environments are equipped with pluralities of WiFi access points (APs), whose deployment is expected to be massive in the future enabling highly precise localization approaches. Though the conventional model-based localization schemes have achieved sub-meter level accuracy by fusing multiple channel state information (CSI) observations, the corresponding computational overhead is usually significant, especially in the current multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems. In order to address this issue, model-free localization techniques using deep learning frameworks have been lately proposed, where mainly classification methods were applied. In this paper, instead of classification based mechanism, we propose a logistic regression based scheme with the deep learning framework, combined with Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) assisted robust training, which achieves more robust sub-meter level accuracy (0.97m median distance error) in the standard laboratory environment and maintains reasonable online prediction overhead under the single WiFi AP settings.

A Unified Beamforming and A/D Self-Interference Cancellation Design for Full Duplex MIMO Radios

In this paper, we focus on reduced complexity full duplex Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems and present a joint design of digital transmit and receive beamforming with Analog and Digital (A/D) self-interference cancellation. We capitalize on a recently proposed multi-tap analog canceller architecture, whose number of taps does not scale with the number of transceiver antennas, and consider practical transmitter impairments for the full duplex operation. Particularly, transmitter IQ imbalance and nonlinear power amplification are assumed via relevant realistic models. Aiming at suppressing the residual linear and nonlinear self-interference signal below the noise floor, we propose a novel digital self-interference cancellation technique that is jointly designed with the configuration of the analog taps and digital beamformers. Differently from the state of the art, we design pilot-assisted estimation of all involved wireless channels. Our representative Monte Carlo simulation results demonstrate that our unified full duplex MIMO design exhibits higher self-interference cancellation capability with less analog taps compared to available techniques, which results in improved achievable rate and bit error performance.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces for Energy Efficiency in Wireless Communication

The adoption of a Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS) for downlink multi-user communication from a multi-antenna base station is investigated in this paper. We develop energy-efficient designs for both the transmit power allocation and the phase shifts of the surface reflecting elements, subject to individual link budget guarantees for the mobile users. This leads to non-convex design optimization problems for which to tackle we propose two computationally affordable approaches, capitalizing on alternating maximization, gradient descent search, and sequential fractional programming. Specifically, one algorithm employs gradient descent for obtaining the RIS phase coefficients, and fractional programming for optimal transmit power allocation. Instead, the second algorithm employs sequential fractional programming for the optimization of the RIS phase shifts. In addition, a realistic power consumption model for RIS-based systems is presented, and the performance of the proposed methods is analyzed in a realistic outdoor environment. In particular, our results show that the proposed RIS-based resource allocation methods are able to provide up to $300\%$ higher energy efficiency, in comparison with the use of regular multi-antenna amplify-and-forward relaying.

Massive MIMO Channel Estimation for Millimeter Wave Systems via Matrix Completion

Millimeter Wave (mmWave) massive Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems realizing directive beamforming require reliable estimation of the wireless propagation channel. However, mmWave channels are characterized by high variability that severely challenges their recovery over short training periods. Current channel estimation techniques exploit either the channel sparsity in the beamspace domain or its low rank property in the antenna domain, nevertheless, they still require large numbers of training symbols for satisfactory performance. In this paper, we present a novel channel estimation algorithm that jointly exploits the latter two properties of mmWave channels to provide more accurate recovery, especially for shorter training intervals. The proposed iterative algorithm is based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) and provides the global optimum solution to the considered convex mmWave channel estimation problem with fast convergence properties.

Indoor Signal Focusing with Deep Learning Designed Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) comprised of tunable unit elements have been recently considered in indoor communication environments for focusing signal reflections to intended user locations. However, the current proofs of concept require complex operations for the RIS configuration, which are mainly realized via wired control connections. In this paper, we present a deep learning method for efficient online wireless configuration of RISs when deployed in indoor communication environments. According to the proposed method, a database of coordinate fingerprints is implemented during an offline training phase. This fingerprinting database is used to train the weights and bias of a properly designed Deep Neural Network (DNN), whose role is to unveil the mapping between the measured coordinate information at a user location and the configuration of the RIS's unit cells that maximizes this user's received signal strength. During the online phase of the presented method, the trained DNN is fed with the measured position information at the target user to output the optimal phase configurations of the RIS for signal power focusing on this intended location. Our realistic simulation results using ray tracing on a three dimensional indoor environment demonstrate that the proposed DNN-based configuration method exhibits its merits for all considered cases, and effectively increases the achievable throughput at the target user location.

Deep Learning for UL/DL Channel Calibration in Generic Massive MIMO Systems

One of the fundamental challenges to realize massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communications is the accurate acquisition of channel state information for a plurality of users at the base station. This is usually accomplished in the UpLink (UL) direction profiting from the time division duplexing mode. In practical base station transceivers, there exist inevitably nonlinear hardware components, like signal amplifiers and various analog filters, which complicates the calibration task. To deal with this challenge, we design a deep neural network for channel calibration between the UL and DownLink (DL) directions. During the initial training phase, the deep neural network is trained from both UL and DL channel measurements. We then leverage the trained deep neural network with the instantaneously estimated UL channel to calibrate the DL one, which is not observable during the UL transmission phase. Our numerical results confirm the merits of the proposed approach, and show that it can achieve performance comparable to conventional approaches, like the Agros method and methods based on least squares, that however assume linear hardware behavior models. More importantly, considering generic nonlinear relationships between the UL and DL channels, it is demonstrated that our deep neural network approach exhibits robust performance, even when the number of training sequences is limited.

Smart Radio Environments Empowered by AI Reconfigurable Meta-Surfaces: An Idea Whose Time Has Come

Future wireless networks are expected to constitute a distributed intelligent wireless communications, sensing, and computing platform, which will have the challenging requirement of interconnecting the physical and digital worlds in a seamless and sustainable manner. Currently, two main factors prevent wireless network operators from building such networks: 1) the lack of control of the wireless environment, whose impact on the radio waves cannot be customized, and 2) the current operation of wireless radios, which consume a lot of power because new signals are generated whenever data has to be transmitted. In this paper, we challenge the usual "more data needs more power and emission of radio waves" status quo, and motivate that future wireless networks necessitate a smart radio environment: A transformative wireless concept, where the environmental objects are coated with artificial thin films of electromagnetic and reconfigurable material (that are referred to as intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces), which are capable of sensing the environment and of applying customized transformations to the radio waves. Smart radio environments have the potential to provide future wireless networks with uninterrupted wireless connectivity, and with the capability of transmitting data without generating new signals but recycling existing radio waves. This paper overviews the current research efforts on smart radio environments, the enabling technologies to realize them in practice, the need of new communication-theoretic models for their analysis and design, and the long-term and open research issues to be solved towards their massive deployment. In a nutshell, this paper is focused on discussing how the availability of intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces will allow wireless network operators to redesign common and well-known network communication paradigms.

Full-Duplex Transmission Optimization for Bi-directional MIMO links with QoS Guarantees

We consider a bi-directional Full-Duplex (FD) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) communication system in which nodes are capable of performing transitter (TX)- Receiver (RX) digital precoding/combining and multi-tap analog cancellation, and have individual Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) requirements. We present an iterative algorithm for the TX powers minimization that includes closed-form expressions for the TX/RX digital beamformers at each algorithmic iteration step. Our representative simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can reduce residual Self-Interference (SI) due to FD operation to below -110dB, which is the typical noise floor level for wireless communications. In addition, our design outperforms relevant recent solutions proposed for 2-user MIMO systems (the so called MIMO X channel) in terms of both power efficiency and computational complexity.

Low Complexity Full Duplex MIMO: Novel Analog Cancellation Architectures and Transceiver Design

Incorporating full duplex operation in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems provides the potential of boosting throughput performance. However, the hardware complexity of the analog self-interference canceller in emerging full duplex MIMO designs mostly scales with the number of transmit and receive antennas, thus exploiting the benefits of analog cancellation becomes impractical for full duplex MIMO transceivers, even for moderate number of antennas. In this paper, we present two novel architectures for the analog canceller comprising of reduced number of cancellation elements, compared to the state of the art, and simple multiplexers for efficient signal routing among the transmit and receive radio frequency chains. One architecture is based on analog taps (tap refers to a line of fixed delay, variable phase shifter, and attenuator) and the other on AUXiliary (AUX) Transmitters (TXs) that locally generate the cancellation signal. In contrast to the available analog cancellation architectures, the values for each tap or each AUX TX and the configuration of the multiplexers are jointly designed with the digital transmit and receive beamforming filters according to certain performance objectives. Focusing on a narrowband flat fading channel model as an example, we present a general optimization framework for the joint design of analog self-interference cancellation and digital beamforming. We also detail the sum rate optimization objective together with its derived solution for the latter architectural components. Representative computer simulation results demonstrate the superiority both in terms of hardware complexity and achievable performance of the proposed low complexity full duplex MIMO schemes over the lately available ones.

Energy Efficient Multi-User MISO Communication using Low Resolution Large Intelligent Surfaces

We consider a multi-user Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) communication system comprising of a multi-antenna base station communicating in the downlink simultaneously with multiple single-antenna mobile users. This communication is assumed to be assisted by a Large Intelligent Surface (LIS) that consists of many nearly passive antenna elements, whose parameters can be tuned according to desired objectives. The latest design advances on these surfaces suggest cheap elements effectively acting as low resolution (even $1$-bit resolution) phase shifters, whose joint configuration affects the electromagnetic behavior of the wireless propagation channel. In this paper, we investigate the suitability of LIS for green communications in terms of Energy Efficiency (EE), which is expressed as the number of bits per Joule. In particular, for the considered multi-user MISO system, we design the transmit powers per user and the values for the surface elements that jointly maximize the system's EE performance. Our representative simulation results show that LIS-assisted communication, even with nearly passive $1$-bit resolution antenna elements, provides significant EE gains compared to conventional relay-assisted communication.

Hybrid Processing Design for Multipair Massive MIMO Relaying with Channel Spatial Correlation

Massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) avails of simple transceiver design which can tackle many drawbacks of relay systems in terms of complicated signal processing, latency, and noise amplification. However, the cost and circuit complexity of having one radio frequency (RF) chain dedicated to each antenna element are prohibitive in practice. In this paper, we address this critical issue in amplify-and-forward (AF) relay systems using a hybrid analog and digital (A/D) transceiver structure. More specifically, leveraging the channel long-term properties, we design the analog beamformer which aims to minimize the channel estimation error and remain invariant over a long timescale. Then, the beamforming is completed by simple digital signal processing, i.e., maximum ratio combining/maximum ratio transmission (MRC/MRT) or zero-forcing (ZF) in the baseband domain. We present analytical bounds on the achievable spectral efficiency taking into account the spatial correlation and imperfect channel state information at the relay station. Our analytical results reveal that the hybrid A/D structure with ZF digital processor exploits spatial correlation and offers a higher spectral efficiency compared to the hybrid A/D structure with MRC/MRT scheme. Our numerical results showcase that the hybrid A/D beamforming design captures nearly 95% of the spectral efficiency of a fully digital AF relaying topology even by removing half of the RF chains. It is also shown that the hybrid A/D structure is robust to coarse quantization, and even with 2-bit resolution, the system can achieve more than 93% of the spectral efficiency offered by the same hybrid A/D topology with infinite resolution phase shifters.

Energy Sustainable IoT with Individual QoS Constraints Through MISO SWIPT Multicasting

Enabling technologies for energy sustainable Internet of Things (IoT) are of paramount importance since the proliferation of high data communication demands of low power network devices. In this paper, we consider a Multiple Input Single Output (MISO) multicasting IoT system comprising of a multiantenna Transmitter (TX) simultaneously transferring information and power to low power and data hungry IoT Receivers (RXs). Each IoT device is assumed to be equipped with Power Splitting (PS) hardware that enables Energy Harvesting (EH) and imposes an individual Quality of Service (QoS) constraint to the downlink communication. We study the joint design of TX precoding and IoT PS ratios for the considered MISO Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) multicasting IoT system with the objective of maximizing the minimum harvested energy among IoT, while satisfying their individual QoS requirements. In our novel EH fairness maximization formulation, we adopt a generic Radio Frequency (RF) EH model capturing practical rectification operation, and resulting in a nonconvex optimization problem. For this problem, we first present an equivalent semi-definite relaxation formulation and then prove it possesses unique global optimality. We also derive tight upper and lower bounds on the globally optimal solution that are exploited in obtaining low complexity algorithmic implementations for the targeted joint design. Analytical expressions for the optimal TX beamforming directions, power allocation, and IoT PS ratios are also presented. Our representative numerical results including comparisons with benchmark designs corroborate the usefulness of proposed framework and provide useful insights on the interplay of critical system parameters.

Transmit Precoding and Receive Power Splitting for Harvested Power Maximization in MIMO SWIPT Systems

We consider the problem of maximizing the harvested power in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) systems with power splitting reception. Different from recently proposed designs, with our optimization problem formulation we target for the jointly optimal transmit precoding and receive uniform power splitting (UPS) ratio maximizing the harvested power, while ensuring that the quality-of-service requirement of the MIMO link is satisfied. We assume practical Radio-Frequency (RF) energy harvesting (EH) receive operation that results in a non-convex optimization problem for the design parameters, which we first formulate in an equivalent generalized convex problem that we then solve optimally. We also derive the globally optimal transmit precoding design for ideal reception. Furthermore, we present analytical bounds for the key variables of both considered problems along with tight high signal-to-noise ratio approximations for their optimal solutions. Two algorithms for the efficient computation of the globally optimal designs are outlined. The first requires solving a small number of non-linear equations, while the second is based on a two-dimensional search having linear complexity. Computer simulation results are presented validating the proposed analysis, providing key insights on various system parameters, and investigating the achievable EH gains over benchmark schemes.

MIMO Underlay Cognitive Radio: Optimized Power Allocation, Effective Number of Transmit Antennas and Harvest-Transmit Tradeoff

In this paper, the performance of an underlay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio system is analytically studied. In particular, the secondary transmitter operates in a spatial multiplexing transmission mode, while a zero-forcing detector is employed at the secondary receiver. Additionally, the secondary system is interfered by single-antenna primary users (PUs). To enhance the performance of secondary transmission, optimal power allocation is performed at the secondary transmitter with a constraint on the maximum allowable outage threshold specified by the PUs. Further, the effective number of secondary transmit antennas is specified based on the optimal power allocation for an arbitrary MIMO scale. Also, a lower bound on the ergodic channel capacity of the secondary system is derived in a closed-form expression. Afterwards, the scenario of a massive MIMO secondary system is thoroughly analyzed and evaluated, where the harvesting-enabled secondary transmission is studied. The optimal power allocation, the effective number of secondary transmit antennas, the efficient tradeoff between transmit-and-harvest secondary antennas, and the average channel capacity of the secondary system are analytically presented. Finally, extensive numerical and simulation results corroborate the effectiveness of our analysis, while some useful engineering insights are provided.

Jointly Optimal Spatial Channel Assignment and Power Allocation for MIMO SWIPT Systems

The joint design of spatial channel assignment and power allocation in Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems capable of Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer (SWIPT) is studied. Assuming availability of channel state information at both communications ends, we maximize the harvested energy at the multi-antenna receiver, while satisfying a minimum information rate requirement for the MIMO link. We first derive the globally optimal eigenchannel assignment and power allocation design, and then present a practically motivated tight closed-form approximation for the optimal design parameters. Selected numerical results verify the validity of the optimal solution and provide useful insights on the proposed designs as well as the pareto-optimal rate-energy tradeoff.

Position Aided Beam Alignment for Millimeter Wave Backhaul Systems with Large Phased Arrays

Wireless backhaul communication has been recently realized with large antennas operating in the millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency band and implementing highly directional beamforming. In this paper, we focus on the alignment problem of narrow beams between fixed position network nodes in mmWave backhaul systems that are subject to small displacements due to wind flow or ground vibration. We consider nodes equipped with antenna arrays that are capable of performing only analog processing and communicate through wireless channels including a line-of-sight component. Aiming at minimizing the time needed to achieve beam alignment, we present an efficient method that capitalizes on the exchange of position information between the nodes to design their beamforming and combining vectors. Some numerical results on the outage probability with the proposed beam alignment method offer useful preliminary insights on the impact of some system and operation parameters.

Secrecy Outage Analysis over Correlated Composite Nakagami-$m$/Gamma Fading Channels

The secrecy outage performance of wireless communication systems operating over spatially correlated composite fading channels is analyzed in this paper. We adopt a multiplicative composite channel model for both the legitimate communication link and the link between the eavesdropper and the legitimate transmitter, consisting of Nakagami-$m$ distributed small-scale fading and shadowing (large-scale fading) modeled by the Gamma distribution. We consider the realistic case where small-scale fading between the links is independent, but shadowing is arbitrarily correlated, and present novel analytical expressions for the probability that the secrecy capacity falls below a target secrecy rate. The presented numerically evaluated results, verified by equivalent computer simulations, offer useful insights on the impact of shadowing correlation and composite fading parameters on the system's secrecy outage performance.
