Quantum statistical imaging of particles without restriction of the diffraction limit

A practical quantum measurement method based on the quantum nature of anti-bunching photon emission has been developed to detect single particles without the restriction of the diffraction limit. By simultane- ously counting the single-photon and two-photon signals with fluorescence microscopy, the images of nearby Nitrogen-Vacancy centers in diamond at a distance of 8.5+/-2.4 nm have been successfully reconstructed. Also their axes information was optically obtained. This quantum statistical imaging technique, with a simple exper- imental setup, can also be easily generalized in the measuring and distinguishing of other physical properties with any overlapping, which shows high potential in future image and study of coupled quantum systems for quantum information techniques.

Unconventional superfluid in a two-dimensional Fermi gas with anisotropic spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman fields

We study the phase diagram of a two-dimensional ultracold Fermi gas with the synthetic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) that has recently been realized at NIST. Due to the coexistence of anisotropic SOC and effective Zeeman fields in the NIST scheme, the system shows rich structure of phase separation involving exotic gapless superfluid and Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) pairing states with different center-of-mass momentum. In particular, we characterize the stability region of FFLO states and demonstrate their unique features under SOC. We then show that the effective transverse Zeeman field in the NIST scheme can qualitatively change the landscape of the thermodynamic potential which leads to intriguing effects such as the disappearance of pairing instability, the competition between different FFLO states, and the stabilization of a fully gapped FFLO state. These interesting features may be probed for example by measuring the in-situ density profiles or by the momentum-resolved radio-frequency spectroscopy.

Quantum simulation of Kibble-Zurek mechanism with a semiconductor electron charge qubit

The Kibble-Zurek mechanism provides a description of the topological structure occurring in the symmetry breaking phase transitions, which may manifest as the cosmological strings in the early universe or vortex lines in the superfulid. A particularly intriguing analogy between Kibble-Zurek mechanism and a text book quantum phenomenon, Landau-Zener transition has been discovered, but is difficult to observe up to now. In recent years, there has been broad interest in quantum simulations using different well-controlled physical setups, in which full tunability allows access to unexplored parameter regimes. Here we demonstrate a proof-of-principle quantum simulation of Kibble-Zurek mechanism using a single electron charge qubit in double quantum dot, set to behave as Landau-Zener dynamics. We measure the qubit states as a function of driven pulse velocity and successfully reproduce Kibble-Zurek like dependence of topological defect density on the quench rate. The high-level controllability of semiconductor two-level system make it a platform to test the key elements of topological defect formation process and shed a new insight on the aspect of non-equilibrium phase transitions.

Actively switchable non-degenerate polarization entangled photon pair distribution in a dense wave-division multiplexing

We have realized experimentally a non-degenerate polarization-entangled photon pair distribution in a commercial telecom dense wave-division multiplexing device (DWDM) with 8 channels. A promising point of this work is that the entangled photon pair is obtained via spontaneously parametric down conversion in a single type-II periodically poled KTiOPO4 crystal without usual post-selection. Another promising advantage is that we can actively control and switch the distribution of the photon pair between different channel pairs in DWDM at will. There is no crosstalk between the different channel pair because of a limited emission bandwidth of the source. High raw visibility of greater than 90% in Bell-type interference measurement in each channel pair and the CHSH inequality S parameter of 2.63+/-0.08 prove high entanglement of our source. Our work is helpful for building quantum communication networks.

Ultra-broadband continuously-tunable polarization entangled photon pair source covering the C+L telecom bands based on a single type-II PPKTP crystal

In this work, we report on the preparation of an ultra-broadband continuously-tunable, highly polarization-entangled photon-pair source covering the C+L telecom bands using a single type-II phase-matched bulk PPKTP crystal. Over 60 nm turning band of the down-converted photons is achieved experimentally. The broad tuning ability is due to operating near an extended phase match point in this crystal. The S parameter value of CHSH inequality is in the range between 2.60+/-0.04 (minimum) and 2.72+/-0.07 (maximum), which clearly demonstrates the high entanglement of the source over the whole tunable range. This is the first realization of such a broadband tunable degenerate polarization entanglement pair source in the telecom band. Combined with dense wavelength-division multiplexing technique, our source could be used to improve the transmission capacity of a single communication channel in the field of quantum communication.

Quantitative verification of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in quantum non-equilibrium dynamics

The Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM) captures the key physics in the non-equilibrium dynamics of second-order phase transitions, and accurately predict the density of the topological defects formed in this process. However, despite much effort, the veracity of the central prediction of KZM, i.e., the scaling of the density production and the transit rate, is still an open question. Here, we performed an experiment, based on a nine-stage optical interferometer with an overall fidelity up to 0.975$\pm$0.008, that directly supports the central prediction of KZM in quantum non-equilibrium dynamics. In addition, our work has significantly upgraded the number of stages of the optical interferometer to nine with a high fidelity, this technique can also help to push forward the linear optical quantum simulation and computation.

Light storage based on four-wave mixing and electromagnetically induced transparency in cold atoms

We performed an experiment to observe the storages of an input probe field and an idler field generated through an off-axis four-wave mixing (FWM) process via a double-lambda configuration in a cold atomic ensemble. We analyzed the underlying physics in detail and found that the retrieved idler field came from two parts if there was no single-photon detuning for pump pulse: part 1 was from the collective atomic spin (the input probe field, the coupling field and the pump field combined to generate the idle field through FWM, then the idler was stored through electromagnetically induced transparency.); part 2 was from the generated new FWM process during the retrieval process (the retrieved probe field, the coupling field and the pump field combined to generate a new FWM signal). If there was single-photon detuning for pump pulse, then the retrieved idler was mainly from part 2. The retrieved two fields exhibited damped oscillations with the same oscillatory period when a homogeneous external magnetic field was applied, which was caused by the Larmor spin precession. We also experimentally realized the storage and retrieval of an image of light using FWM for the first time. In which, an image was added into the input signal. After the storage, the retrieved idler beams and input signal carried the same image. This image storage technique holds promises for application in image processing, remote sensing and quantum communication.

Quantum simulation of Heisenberg spin chains with next nearest neighbor interactions in coupled cavities

We propose a scheme to simulate one-dimensional XXZ-type Heisenberg spin models with competing interactions between nearest-neighbors (NNs) and next-NNs in photon-coupled micro-cavities. Our scheme, for the first time, exploits the rich resources and flexible controls available in such a system to realize arbitrarily adjustable ratios between the effective NN and next-NN coupling strengths. Such powerful capability allows us to simulate frustration phenomena and disorder behaviors in 1-d systems arising from next-NN interactions, a large class of problems of great importance in condensed matter physics. Our scheme is robust due to the lack of atomic excitations which suppresses spontaneous emission and cavity decay strongly.

Overlaying optical lattices for simulation of complex frustrated antiferromagnets

We present design techniques of special optical lattices that allow quantum simulation of spin frustration in two-dimensional systems. By carefully overlaying optical lattices with different periods and orientations, we are able to adjust the ratio between the nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor interaction strengths in a square spin lattice and realize frustration effects. We show that only laser beams of a single frequency is required, and the parameter space reachable in our design is broad enough to study the important phases in the $J_1$-$J_2$ frustrated Heisenberg model and checkerboard antiferromagnet model. By using the polarization spectroscopy for detection, distinct quantum phases and quantum phase transition points can be characterized straightforwardly. Our design thus offers a suitable setup for simulation of frustrated spin systems.

Strongly-coupled Josephson junction array for simulation of frustrated one-dimensional spin models

We study the capacitance-coupled Josephson junction array beyond the small-coupling limit. We find that, when the scale of the system is large, its Hamiltonian can be obtained without the small-coupling approximation and the system can be used to simulate strongly frustrated one-dimensional Ising spin problems. To engineer the system Hamiltonian for an ideal theoretical model, we apply a dynamical decoupling technique to eliminate undesirable couplings in the system. Using a 6-site junction array as an example, we numerically evaluate the system to show that it exhibits important characteristics of the frustrated spin model.

Storage and retrieval of a light in telecomband in a cold atomic ensemble

A telecom photon is a suitable information carrier in a fiber-based quantum network due to its lower transmission loss in fiber. Because of the paucity of suitable atomic system, usually the photon connecting different memories is in near infrared band, therefore the frequency conversion of the photon in and out of telecomband has to be required to realize the interface between the atomic-based memory and the photon-based carrier. In order for that, two atomic or other systems which could realize the frequency conversion have to be taken into account, and besides, one more atomic system as a storing media is need. So the ability of storing a photon in telecomband is an interesting and exciting topic. In this work, we give a first experimental proof of principle of storing a light in telecomband. The telecom light is directly stored and retrieved later through two nonlinear processes via an inverted-Y configuration in a cold atomic ensemble, therefore the interface between the memory and photon in other proposals is not needed. We believe our work may open a new avenue for long-distance quantum communication.

Quantum random walk in periodic potential on a line

We investigated the discrete-time quantum random walks on a line in periodic potential. The probability distribution with periodic potential is more complex compared to the normal quantum walks, and the standard deviation $σ$ has interesting behaviors for different period $q$ and parameter $θ$. We studied the behavior of standard deviation with variation in walk steps, period, and $θ$. The standard deviation increases approximately linearly with $θ$ and decreases with $1/q$ for $θ\in(0,π/4)$, and increases approximately linearly with $1/q$ for $θ\in[π/4,π/2)$. When $q=2$, the standard deviation is lazy for $θ\in[π/4+nπ,3π/4+nπ],n\in Z$.

Average position in quantum walks with a U(2) coin

We investigated discrete-time quantum walks with an arbitary unitary coin. Here we discover that the average position $ =\max( \sin(α+γ)$, while the initial state is $1/\sqrt{2}(\mid0L>+i\mid0R>)$. We prove the result and get some symmetry properties of quantum walks with a U(2) coin with $\mid0L>$ and $\mid0R>$ as the initial state.

Experimental demonstration of photonic quantum ratchet

We created a potential for light with a phase mirror and then experimentally realized a photonic quantum ratchet in an all-optical system, in which ratchet effects can be observed with the naked eye up to more than 22 steps, and quantum resonance can be demonstrated. Our method also provides a new means to simulate quantum particles with classical light, and it can be applied to investigate many other quantum phenomena.

Bichromatic field generation from double-four-wave mixing in a double-electromagnetically induced transparency system

We demonstrate the double electromagnetically induced transparency (double-EIT) and double four-wave mixing (double-FWM) based on a new scheme of non-degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) involving five levels of a cold 85Rb atomic ensemble, in which the double-EIT windows are used to transmit the probe field and enhance the third-order nonlinear susceptibility. The phase-matching conditions for both four-wave mixings could be satisfied simultaneously. The frequency of one component of the generated bichromatic field is less than the other by the ground-state hyperfine splitting (3GHz). This specially designed experimental scheme for simultaneously generating different nonlinear wave-mixing processes is expected to find applications in quantum information processing and cross phase modulation. Our results agree well with the theoretical simulation.

Multiple images storage and frequency conversion in a cold atomic ensemble

The strong demand for quantum memory, a key building block of quantum network, has inspired new methodologies and led to experimental progress for quantum storage. The use of quantum memory for spatial multimode or image storage could dramatically increase the channel bit-rate. Furthermore, quantum memory that can store multiple optical modes would lead to higher efficiencies in quantum communication and computation. Here, by using resonant tripod electromagnetically induced transparency in a cold atomic ensemble, we experimentally demonstrate multiple probes storage in frequency domain, where two probe fields have discrete wavelengths and different spatial information. In addition, by using different read-light, we realize frequency conversion of retrieved images with high efficiency. Besides, our method could be used to create a superposition of the images by realizing the function of a beamsplitter. All advantages make our method useful in many fields including quantum information, detection, imaging, sensing and even astrophysical observation.

Theory of free space coupling to high-Q whispering gallery modes

A theoretical study of free space coupling to high-Q whispering gallery modes both in circular and deformed microcavities are presented. In the case of a circular cavity, both analytical solutions and asymptotic formulas are derived. The coupling efficiencies at different coupling regimes for cylinder incoming wave are discussed, and the maximum efficiency is estimated for the practical Gaussian beam excitation. In the case of a deformed cavity, the coupling efficiency can be higher if the excitation beam can match the intrinsic emission well and the radiation loss can be tuned by adjusting the degree of deformation. Employing an abstract model of slightly deformed cavity, we found that the asymmetric and peak like line shapes instead of the Lorentz-shape dip are universal in transmission spectra due to multi-mode interference, and the coupling efficiency can not be estimated from the absolute depth of the dip. Our results provide guidelines for free space coupling in experiments, suggesting that the high-Q ARCs can be efficiently excited through free space which will stimulate further experiments and applications of WGMs based on free space coupling.

Experimental Upconversion of Images

We experimentally demonstrate the up-conversion of light carrying an image from the infrared spectrum to the visible spectrum using four-wave mixing via a ladder-type configuration in an atomic vapor. The results we obtained show the high correlation between the input image and the up-converted image. We also discuss the possible influences of experimental parameters on the resolution. Our work might be useful for research in astrophysics, night-vision technology, and chemical sensing.
