Semi-device independent random number expansion protocol with n to 1 quantum random access codes

We study random number expansion protocols based on the $n \to 1$ quantum random access codes (QRACs). We consider them in the semi-device independent scenario where the inner workings of the devices are unknown to us but we can certify the dimensions of the systems being communicated. This approach does not require the use of the entanglement and makes the physical realization of these protocols much easier than in the standard device independent scenario. In our work, we propose a protocol for randomness expansion, compute min-entropy for the semi-device independent protocol, and investigate $n\to 1$ QRACs with a view to their use in randomness expansion protocols. We also calculate the dependence of the effectiveness of the randomness generation on $n$ and find it optimal for $n=3$, and provide the explanation for this fact.

Device modeling of superconductor transition edge sensors based on the two-fluid theory

In order to support the design and study of sophisticated large scale transition edge sensor (TES) circuits, we use basic SPICE elements to develop device models for TESs based on the superfluid-normal fluid theory. In contrast to previous studies, our device model is not limited to small signal simulation, and it relies only on device parameters that have clear physical meaning and can be easily measured. We integrate the device models in design kits based on powerful EDA tools such as CADENCE and OrCAD, and use them for versatile simulations of TES circuits. Comparing our simulation results with published experimental data, we find good agreement which suggests that device models based on the two-fluid theory can be used to predict the behavior of TES circuits reliably and hence they are valuable for assisting the design of sophisticated TES circuits.

Broadband opto-mechanical phase shifter for photonic integrated circuits

A broadband opto-mechanical phase shifter for photonic integrated circuits is proposed and numerically investigated. The structure consists of a mode-carrying waveguide and a deformable non-mode-carrying nanostring, which are parallel with each other. Utilizing the optical gradient force between them, the nanostring can be deflected. Thus the effective refractive indices of the waveguide is changed with the deformation, and further causes a phase shift. The phase shift under different geometry sizes, launched powers and boundary conditions are calculated and the dynamical properties as well as the thermal noise's effect are also discussed. It is demonstrated that a $π$ phase shift can be realized with only about 0.64 mW launched power and 50 $μm$ long nanostring. The proposed phase shifter may find potential usage in future investigation of photonic integrated circuits.

Efficient Quantum State Estimation with Over-complete Tomography

It is widely accepted that the selection of measurement bases can affect the efficiency of quantum state estimation methods, precision of estimating an unknown state can be improved significantly by simply introduce a set of symmetrical measurement bases. Here we compare the efficiencies of estimations with different numbers of measurement bases by numerical simulation and experiment in optical system. The advantages of using a complete set of symmetrical measurement bases are illustrated more clearly.

Measuring non-Markovianity of processes with controllable system-environment interaction

Non-Markovian processes have recently become a central topic in the study of open quantum systems. We realize experimentally non-Markovian decoherence processes of single photons by combining time delay and evolution in a polarization-maintaining optical fiber. The experiment allows the identification of the process with strongest memory effects as well as the determination of a recently proposed measure for the degree of quantum non-Markovianity based on the exchange of information between the open system and its environment. Our results show that an experimental quantification of memory in quantum processes is indeed feasible which could be useful in the development of quantum memory and communication devices.

Preserving Entanglement of Flying Qubits in Optical Fibers by Dynamical Decoupling

We theoretically investigate the influence of dynamical decoupling sequence in preserving entanglement of polarized photons in polarization-maintaining birefringent fibers(PMF) under a classic Gauss 1/f noise. We study the dynamic evolution of entanglement along the control sequence embedded fibers. Decoherence due to dispersion of polarization mode in PMF can be dramatically depressed, even for a wild optical width. Entanglement degree can be effectively preserved while the control pulse is implemented.

Security of quantum key distribution with state-dependent imperfections

In practical quantum key distribution (QKD) system, the state preparation and measurement are imperfect comparing with the ideal BB84 protocol, which are always state-dependent in practical realizations. If the state-dependent imperfections can not be regarded as an unitary transformation, it should not be considered as part of quantum channel noise introduced by the eavesdropper, the commonly used secret key rate formula GLLP can not be applied correspondingly. In this paper, the unconditional security of quantum key distribution with state-dependent imperfection has been analyzed by estimating the upper bound of the phase error rate about the quantum channel.

Attacking practical quantum key distribution system with wavelength dependent beam splitter and multi-wavelength sources

Unconditional security of quantum key distribution protocol can be guaranteed by the basic property of quantum mechanics. Unfortunately, the practical quantum key distribution system always have some imperfections, and the practical system may be attacked if the imperfection can be controlled by the eavesdropper Eve. Applying the fatal security loophole introduced by the imperfect beam splitter's wavelength dependent optical property, we propose wavelength-dependent attacking model, which can be applied to almost all practical quantum key distribution systems with the passive state modulation and photon state detection after the practical beam splitter. Utilizing our attacking model, we experimentally demonstrate the attacking system based on practical polarization encoding quantum key distribution system with almost 100% success probability. Our result demonstrate that all practical devices require tightened security inspection for avoiding side channel attacks in practical quantum key distribution experimental realizations.

Proposed solid-state Faraday anomalous-dispersion optical filter

We propose a Faraday anomalous dispersion optical filter (FADOF) based on a rare-earth ion doped crystal. We present theoretical analyses for the solid-state FADOF transmission. Our theoretical model predicts a maximum transmission efficiency of 71% and a double-peaked transmission spectrum with a bandwidth of 6 GHz under current experimental conditions. Our proposal may have important applications in optical communications.

Non-classical correlation of cascaded photon pairs emitted from quantum dot

We studied the quantum correlation between the photon pairs generated by biexciton cascade decays of self-assembled quantum dots, and determined the temperature behavior associated with so-called sudden change of the quantum correlation. The relationship between the fine structure splitting and the sudden change temperature is also provided. Our study indicates that this correlation behavior sudden change temperature is independent on the back ground noise in the system and far lower than entanglement sudden death temperature, therefore it should be easier to observe the phenomenon of correlation sudden change in experiments than to observe entanglement sudden death.

Violation of Leggett-Garg inequalities in single quantum dot

We investigate the violation of Leggett-Garg (LG) inequalities inquantum dots with the stationarity assumption. By comparing two types of LG inequalities, we find a better one which is easier to be tested in experiment. In addition, we show that the fine-structure splitting, background noise and temperature of quantum dots all influence the violation of LG inequalities.

Approach to accurately measuring the speed of optical precursors

Precursors can serve as a bound on the speed of information with dispersive medium. We propose a method to identify the speed of optical precursors using polarization-based interference in a solid-state device, which can bound the accuracy of the precursors' speed to less than $10^{-4}$ with conventional experimental conditions. Our proposal may have important implications for optical communications and fast information processing.

Experimental control of the transition from Markovian to non-Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems

Realistic quantum mechanical systems are always exposed to an external environment. The presence of the environment often gives rise to a Markovian process in which the system loses information to its surroundings. However, many quantum systems exhibit a pronounced non-Markovian behavior in which there is a flow of information from the environment back to the system, signifying the presence of quantum memory effects [1-5]. The environment is usually composed of a large number of degrees of freedom which are difficult to control, but some sophisticated schemes for modifying the environment have been developed [6]. The physical realization and control of dynamical processes in open quantum systems plays a decisive role, for example, in recent proposals for the generation of entangled states [7-9], for schemes of dissipative quantum computation [10], for the design of quantum memories [11] and for the enhancement of the efficiency in quantum metrology [12]. Here we report an experiment which allows through selective preparation of the initial environmental states to drive the open system from the Markovian to the non-Markovian regime, to control the information flow between the system and the environment, and to determine the degree of non-Markovianity by direct measurements on the open system.

Semi-device independent random number expansion without entanglement

By testing the classical correlation violation between two systems, the random number can be expanded and certified without applying classical statistical method. In this work, we propose a new random number expansion protocol without entanglement, and the randomness can be guaranteed only by the 2-dimension quantum witness violation. Furthermore, we only assume that the dimensionality of the system used in the protocol has a tight bound, and the whole protocol can be regarded as a semi-device independent black-box scenario. Comparing with the device independent random number expansion protocol based on entanglement, our protocol is much easier to implement and test.

Molecular-spin dynamics study of electromagnons in multiferroic RMn$_2$O$_5$

We investigate the electromagnon in magnetoferroelectrics RMn$_2$O$_5$ using combined molecular-spin dynamics simulations. We identify the origin of the electromagnon modes observed in the optical spectra and reproduce the most salient features of the electromagnon in these compounds. We find that the electromagnon frequencies are very sensitive to the magnetic wave vector along the $a$ direction. We further investigate the electromagnon in magnetic field. Although the modes frequencies change significant under magnetic field, the static dielectric constant electromagnon does not change much in the magnetic field.

Ultra-sensitive phase estimation with white light

An improvement of the scheme by Brunner and Simon [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 010405 (2010)] is proposed in order to show that quantum weak measurements can provide a method to detect ultrasmall longitudinal phase shifts, even with white light. By performing an analysis in the frequency domain, we find that the amplification effect will work as long as the spectrum is large enough, irrespective of the behavior in the time domain. As such, the previous scheme can be notably simplified for experimental implementations.

Exciton polarization, fine structure splitting and quantum dot asymmetry under uniaxial stress

We derive a general relation between the fine structure splitting (FSS) and the exciton polarization angle of self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) under uniaxial stress. We show that the FSS lower bound under external stress can be predicted by the exciton polarization angle and FSS under zero stress. The critical stress can also be determined by monitoring the change in exciton polarization angle. We confirm the theory by performing atomistic pseudopotential calculations for the InAs/GaAs QDs. The work provides a deep insight into the dots asymmetry and their optical properties, and a useful guide in selecting QDs with smallest FSS which are crucial in entangled photon sources applications.

Exciton-Plasmon-Photon Conversion in silver nanowire: polarization dependence

Polarization dependence of the exciton-plasmon-photon conversion in silver nanowire-quantum dots structure was investigated using a scanning confocal microscope system. We found that the fluorescence enhancement of the CdSe nanocrystals was correlated with the angle between the excitation light polarization and the silver nanowire direction. The polarization of the emission was also related with the nanowire direction. It was in majority in the direction parallel with nanowire.
