Experimental characterization of entanglement dynamics in noisy channels

The dynamics of entanglement between two photons with one of them passing through noisy quantum channels is characterized. It is described by a simple factorization law which was first theoretically proposed by Konrad {\it et al.} [Nature Phys., 4, 99 (2008)]. Quantum state tomography process is employed to reconstruct the reduced density matrixes of the final states and the corresponding concurrences are calculated. Good fittings between experimental results and theoretical predictions are found, which imply the validity of the general factorization law in the characterization of entanglement dynamics.

Quantum-information transfer in a coupled resonator waveguide

We propose an efficient scheme for the implementation of quantum information transfer in a onedimensional coupled resonator waveguide. We show that, based on the effective long-range dipole-dipole interactions between the atoms mediated by the cavity modes, Raman transitions between the atoms trapped in different nodes can take place. Quantum information could be transferred directly between the opposite ends of the coupled waveguide without involving the intermediate nodes via either Raman transitions or the stimulated Raman adiabatic passages. Since this scheme, in principle, is a one-step protocol, it may provide useful applications in quantum communications.

Quantum repeaters free of polarization disturbance and phase noise

Original quantum repeater protocols based on single-photon interference suffer from phase noise of the channel, which makes the long-distance quantum communication infeasible. Fortunately, two-photon interference type quantum repeaters can be immune to phase noise of the channel. However, this type quantum repeaters may still suffer from polarization disturbance of the channel. Here we propose a quantum repeaters protocol which is free of polarization disturbance of the channel based on the invariance of the anti-symmetric Bell state $|ψ^->=(|H>|V>-|V>|H>)/\sqrt{2}$ under collective noise. Our protocol is also immune to phase noise with the Sagnac interferometer configuration. Through single-atom cavity-QED technology and linear optics, this scheme can be implemented easily.

Generation of quantum-dot cluster states with superconducting transmission line resonator

We propose an efficient method to generate cluster states in spatially separated double quantum dots with a superconducting transmission line resonator (TLR). When the detuning between the double-dot qubits transition frequency and the frequency of the full wave mode in the TLR satisfies some conditions, an Ising-like operator between arbitrary two separated qubits can be achieved. Even including the main noise sources, it's shown that the high fidelity cluster states could be generated in this solid system in just one step.

Apply current exponential de Finetti theorem to realistic quantum key distribution

In the realistic quantum key distribution (QKD), Alice and Bob respectively get a quantum state from an unknown channel, whose dimension may be unknown. However, while discussing the security, sometime we need to know exact dimension, since current exponential de Finetti theorem, crucial to the information-theoretical security proof, is deeply related with the dimension and can only be applied to finite dimensional case. Here we address this problem in detail. We show that if POVM elements corresponding to Alice and Bob's measured results can be well described in a finite dimensional subspace with sufficiently small error, then dimensions of Alice and Bob's states can be almost regarded as finite. Since the security is well defined by the smooth entropy, which is continuous with the density matrix, the small error of state actually means small change of security. Then the security of unknown-dimensional system can be solved. Finally we prove that for heterodyne detection continuous variable QKD and differential phase shift QKD, the collective attack is optimal under the infinite key size case.

Effect of Quantum Point Contact Measurement on Electron Spin State in Quantum Dot

We study the time evolution of two electron spin states in a double quantum-dot system, which includes a nearby quantum point contact (QPC) as a measurement device. We obtain that the QPC measurement induced decoherence is in time scales of microsecond. We also find that the enhanced QPC measurement will trap the system in its initial spin states, which is consistent with quantum Zeno effect.

Is a rubidium cell with long decay time always useful for generating a non-classical photon pair?

We experimentally find an interesting and unexpected thing: a rubidium cell with long decay time can not be used to generate a non-classical correlated photon pair via the D2 transition of $^{87}$Rb using four-wave mixing configuration [Opt. Express {\bf 16}, 21708 (2008)]. In this work, we give a detail theoretical analysis on the EIT of hot $^{87}$Rb with different ground decay time, which shows a probable reason why a rubidium cell with long decay time is not a useful candidate for preparation of a non-classical photon pair via the D2 transition. The simulations agree well with the experimental results. We believe our find is very instructive to such kind of research.

Hidden correlations of exciton complexes in self-assembled quantum dots and rings

The binding energies of trions ($X^+$, $X^-$) and biexciton (XX) in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are very sensitive to the geometry and chemical composition of the QDs, and are random from dots to dots. However, in this letter, we show through analytical and numerical methods that the transition energies of the exciton complexes in self-assembled quantum dots and rings follow a simple and robust rule, i.e., the sum of exciton and biexciton transition energies minus the transition energies of trions is always positive and almost a constant for the same type of quantum dots and rings as a consequence of a pure Coulomb correlation effect. More interestingly, this quantity show a sharp transition when the topology change from a dot to a ring. This {\it hidden} correlation effect, directly measurable in experiments, offers a useful way to understand the photoluminescence spectra of self-assembled quantum dots and rings.

Security proof of differential phase shift quantum key distribution in the noiseless case

Differential phase shift quantum key distribution systems have a high potential for achieving high speed key generation. However, its unconditional security proof is still missing, even though it has been proposed for many years. Here, we prove its security against collective attacks with a weak coherent light source in the noiseless case (i.e. no bit error). The only assumptions are that quantum theory is correct, the devices are perfect and trusted and the key size is infinite. Our proof works on threshold detectors. We compute the lower bound of the secret key generation rate using the information-theoretical security proof method. Our final result shows that the lower bound of the secret key generation rate per pulse is linearly proportional to the channel transmission probability if Bob's detection counts obey the binomial distribution.

Simple scheme for expanding a polarization-entangled W state by adding one photon

We propose a simple scheme for expanding a polarization-entangled W state. By mixing a single photon and one of the photons in an n-photon W state at a polarization-dependent beam splitter (PDBS), we can obtain an (n+1)-photon W state after post-selection. Our scheme also opens the door for generating n-photon W states using single photons and linear optics.

First-principles study of the spin-lattice coulpling in spin frustrated DyMn$_2$O$_5$

The lattice dynamic properties and spin-phonon coupling in DyMn$_2$O$_5$ are studied by using the density-functional theory. The calculated phonon frequencies are in very good agreement with experiments. We then compare the phonon modes calculated from different spin configurations. The results show that the phonon frequencies change substantially in different spin configurations, suggesting that the spin-phonon coupling in this material is very strong. Especially, the short range spin ordering has drastic effects on the highest Raman and IR phonon modes that might be responsible for the observed phonon anomalies near and above the magnetic phase transitions.

Observable estimation of entanglement for arbitrary finite-dimensional mixed states

We present observable upper bounds of squared concurrence, which are the dual inequalities of the observable lower bounds introduced in [F. Mintert and A. Buchleitner, Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 140505 (2007)] and [L. Aolita, A. Buchleitner and F. Mintert, Phys. Rev. A 78, 022308 (2008)]. These bounds can be used to estimate entanglement for arbitrary experimental unknown finite-dimensional states by few experimental measurements on a twofold copy $ρ\otimesρ$ of the mixed states. Furthermore, the degree of mixing for a mixed state and some properties of the linear entropy also have certain relations with its upper and lower bounds of squared concurrence.

Dependence of the decoherence of polarization states in phase-damping channels on the frequency spectrum envelope of photons

We consider the decoherence of photons suffering in phase-damping channels. By exploring the evolutions of single-photon polarization states and two-photon polarization-entangled states, we find that different frequency spectrum envelopes of photons induce different decoherence processes. A white frequency spectrum can lead the decoherence to an ideal Markovian process. Some color frequency spectrums can induce asymptotical decoherence, while, some other color frequency spectrums can make coherence vanish periodically with variable revival amplitudes. These behaviors result from the non-Markovian effects on the decoherence process, which may give rise to a revival of coherence after complete decoherence.

Quantum computation with graphene nanoribbon

We propose a scalable scheme to implement quantum computation in graphene nanoribbon. It is shown that electron or hole can be naturally localized in each zigzag region for a graphene nanoribbon with a sequence of Z-shaped structure without exploiting any confined gate. An one-dimensional graphene quantum dots chain is formed in such graphene nanoribbon, where electron or hole spin can be encoded as qubits. The coupling interaction between neighboring graphene quantum dots is found to be always-on Heisenberg type. Applying the bang-bang control strategy and decoherence free subspaces encoding method, universal quantum computation is argued to be realizable with the present techniques.

Experimental Measurement of Lower and Upper Bounds of Concurrence for Mixed Quantum States

We experimentally measure the lower and upper bounds of concurrence for a set of two-qubit mixed quantum states using photonic systems. The measured concurrence bounds are in agreement with the results evaluated from the density matrices reconstructed through quantum state tomography. In our experiment, we propose and demonstrate a simple method to provide two faithful copies of a two-photon mixed state required for parity measurements: Two photon pairs generated by two neighboring pump laser pulses through optical parametric down conversion processes represent two identical copies. This method can be conveniently generalized for entanglement estimation of multi-photon mixed states.

Fully multi-qubit entangled states

We investigate the properties of different levels of entanglement in graph states which correspond to connected graphs. Combining the operational definition of graph states and the postulates of entanglement measures, we prove that in connected graph states of N>3 qubits there is no genuine three-qubit entanglement. For certain classes of graph states, all genuine k-qubit entanglement, 2\leq k\leq N-1, among every k qubits vanishes. These results about connected graph states naturally lead to the definition of fully multi-qubit entangled states. We also find that the connected graph states of four qubits is one but not the only one class of fully four-qubit entangled states.

Numerical Studies of Quantum Hall Ferromagnetism in Two-Subband Systems

We carry out a numerical study of the quantum Hall ferromagnetism in a two-subband system using a set of experimental parameters in a recently experiment [X. C. Zhang, I. Martin, and H. W. Jiang, Phys. Rev. B \textbf{74}, 073301 (2006)]. Employing the self-consistence local density approximation for growth direction wave function and the Hartree-Fock theory for the pseudospin anisotropy energy, we are able to account for the easy-axis and easy-plane quantum Hall ferromagnetism observed at total filling factor $ν= 3$ and $ν= 4$, respectively. Our study provides some insight of how the anisotropy energy, which highly depends upon the distribution of growth direction wave functions, determines the symmetry of the quantum Hall ferromagnets.

Control of light speed: From slow light to superluminal light

A scheme for controlling light speed from slower-than-c to faster-than-c in an atomic system is presented in this paper. The scheme is based on far detuning Raman effect. Two far detuning coupling fields with small frequency difference will produce two absorptive peaks for the probe field in a $Λ$ structure, and an optical pump between the two ground states can change the absorptive peaks into enhanced peaks, which makes the normal dispersion between the two peaks change into anomalous dispersion, so the probe field can change from slow light to superluminal propagation.
