Coherent Video Inpainting Using Optical Flow-Guided Efficient Diffusion

The text-guided video inpainting technique has significantly improved the performance of content generation applications. A recent family for these improvements uses diffusion models, which have become essential for achieving high-quality video inpainting results, yet they still face performance bottlenecks in temporal consistency and computational efficiency. This motivates us to propose a new video inpainting framework using optical Flow-guided Efficient Diffusion (FloED) for higher video coherence. Specifically, FloED employs a dual-branch architecture, where the time-agnostic flow branch restores corrupted flow first, and the multi-scale flow adapters provide motion guidance to the main inpainting branch. Besides, a training-free latent interpolation method is proposed to accelerate the multi-step denoising process using flow warping. With the flow attention cache mechanism, FLoED efficiently reduces the computational cost of incorporating optical flow. Extensive experiments on background restoration and object removal tasks show that FloED outperforms state-of-the-art diffusion-based methods in both quality and efficiency. Our codes and models will be made publicly available.

Sphere Precoding for Robust Near-Field Communications

Near-field communication with large antenna arrays promises significant beamforming and multiplexing gains. These communication links, however, are very sensitive to user mobility as any small change in the user position may suddenly drop the signal power. This leads to critical challenges for the robustness of these near-field communication systems. In this paper, we propose \textit{sphere precoding}, which is a robust precoding design to address user mobility in near-field communications. To gain insights into the spatial correlation of near-field channels, we extend the one-ring channel model to what we call one-sphere channel model and derive the channel covariance considering user mobility. Based on the one-sphere channel model, a robust precoding design problem is defined to optimize the minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) satisfaction probability among mobile users. By utilizing the eigen structure of channel covariance, we further design a relaxed convex problem to approximate the solution of the original non-convex problem. The low-complexity solution effectively shapes a sphere that maintains the signal power for the target user and also nulls its interference within spheres around the other users. Simulation results highlight the efficacy of the proposed solution in achieving robust precoding yet high achievable rates in near-field communication systems.

CrowdHMTware: A Cross-level Co-adaptation Middleware for Context-aware Mobile DL Deployment

There are many deep learning (DL) powered mobile and wearable applications today continuously and unobtrusively sensing the ambient surroundings to enhance all aspects of human lives. To enable robust and private mobile sensing, DL models are often deployed locally on resource-constrained mobile devices using techniques such as model compression or offloading. However, existing methods, either front-end algorithm level (i.e. DL model compression/partitioning) or back-end scheduling level (i.e. operator/resource scheduling), cannot be locally online because they require offline retraining to ensure accuracy or rely on manually pre-defined strategies, struggle with dynamic adaptability. The primary challenge lies in feeding back runtime performance from the back-end level to the front-end level optimization decision. Moreover, the adaptive mobile DL model porting middleware with cross-level co-adaptation is less explored, particularly in mobile environments with diversity and dynamics. In response, we introduce CrowdHMTware, a dynamic context-adaptive DL model deployment middleware for heterogeneous mobile devices. It establishes an automated adaptation loop between cross-level functional components, i.e. elastic inference, scalable offloading, and model-adaptive engine, enhancing scalability and adaptability. Experiments with four typical tasks across 15 platforms and a real-world case study demonstrate that CrowdHMTware can effectively scale DL model, offloading, and engine actions across diverse platforms and tasks. It hides run-time system issues from developers, reducing the required developer expertise.

Bacterial swimming and accumulation on endothelial cell surfaces

Flagellar-driven locomotion plays a critical role in bacterial attachment and colonization of surfaces, contributing to the risks of contamination and infection. Tremendous attempts to uncover the underlying principles governing bacterial motility near surfaces have relied on idealized assumptions of surrounding inorganic boundaries. However, in the context of living systems, the role of cells from tissues and organs becomes increasingly critical, particularly in bacterial swimming and adhesion, yet it remains poorly understood. Here, we propose using biological surfaces composed of vascular endothelial cells to experimentally investigate bacterial motion and interaction behaviors. Our results reveal that bacterial trapping observed on inorganic surfaces is counteractively manifested with reduced radii of circular motion on cellular surfaces, while with two distinct modes of bacterial adhesion: tight adhesion and loose adhesion. Interestingly, the presence of living cells enhances bacterial surface enrichment, and imposed flow intensifies this accumulation via bias-swimming effect. These results surprisingly indicate that physical effects remain the dominant factor regulating bacterial motility and accumulation at the single-cell layer level in vitro, bridging the gap between simplified hydrodynamic mechanisms and complex biological surfaces, with relevance to biofilm formation and bacterial contamination.

An accelerated gradient method with adaptive restart for convex multiobjective optimization problems

In this work, based on the continuous time approach, we propose an accelerated gradient method with adaptive residual restart for convex multiobjective optimization problems. For the first, we derive rigorously the continuous limit of the multiobjective accelerated proximal gradient method by Tanabe et al. [Comput. Optim. Appl., 2023]. It is a second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) that involves a special projection operator and can be viewed as an extension of the ODE by Su et al. [J. Mach. Learn. Res., 2016] for Nesterov acceleration. Then, we introduce a novel accelerated multiobjective gradient (AMG) flow with tailored time scaling that adapts automatically to the convex case and the strongly convex case, and the exponential decay rate of a merit function along with the solution trajectory of AMG flow is established via the Lyapunov analysis. After that, we consider an implicit-explicit time discretization and obtain an accelerated multiobjective gradient method with a convex quadratic programming subproblem. The fast sublinear rate and linear rate are proved respectively for convex and strongly convex problems. In addition, we present an efficient residual based adaptive restart technique to overcome the oscillation issue and improve the convergence significantly. Numerical results are provided to validate the practical performance of the proposed method.

FashionComposer: Compositional Fashion Image Generation

We present FashionComposer for compositional fashion image generation. Unlike previous methods, FashionComposer is highly flexible. It takes multi-modal input (i.e., text prompt, parametric human model, garment image, and face image) and supports personalizing the appearance, pose, and figure of the human and assigning multiple garments in one pass. To achieve this, we first develop a universal framework capable of handling diverse input modalities. We construct scaled training data to enhance the model's robust compositional capabilities. To accommodate multiple reference images (garments and faces) seamlessly, we organize these references in a single image as an "asset library" and employ a reference UNet to extract appearance features. To inject the appearance features into the correct pixels in the generated result, we propose subject-binding attention. It binds the appearance features from different "assets" with the corresponding text features. In this way, the model could understand each asset according to their semantics, supporting arbitrary numbers and types of reference images. As a comprehensive solution, FashionComposer also supports many other applications like human album generation, diverse virtual try-on tasks, etc.

AdaScale: Dynamic Context-aware DNN Scaling via Automated Adaptation Loop on Mobile Devices

Deep learning is reshaping mobile applications, with a growing trend of deploying deep neural networks (DNNs) directly to mobile and embedded devices to address real-time performance and privacy. To accommodate local resource limitations, techniques like weight compression, convolution decomposition, and specialized layer architectures have been developed. However, the \textit{dynamic} and \textit{diverse} deployment contexts of mobile devices pose significant challenges. Adapting deep models to meet varied device-specific requirements for latency, accuracy, memory, and energy is labor-intensive. Additionally, changing processor states, fluctuating memory availability, and competing processes frequently necessitate model re-compression to preserve user experience. To address these issues, we introduce AdaScale, an elastic inference framework that automates the adaptation of deep models to dynamic contexts. AdaScale leverages a self-evolutionary model to streamline network creation, employs diverse compression operator combinations to reduce the search space and improve outcomes, and integrates a resource availability awareness block and performance profilers to establish an automated adaptation loop. Our experiments demonstrate that AdaScale significantly enhances accuracy by 5.09%, reduces training overhead by 66.89%, speeds up inference latency by 1.51 to 6.2 times, and lowers energy costs by 4.69 times.

Pre-trained Visual Dynamics Representations for Efficient Policy Learning

Pre-training for Reinforcement Learning (RL) with purely video data is a valuable yet challenging problem. Although in-the-wild videos are readily available and inhere a vast amount of prior world knowledge, the absence of action annotations and the common domain gap with downstream tasks hinder utilizing videos for RL pre-training. To address the challenge of pre-training with videos, we propose Pre-trained Visual Dynamics Representations (PVDR) to bridge the domain gap between videos and downstream tasks for efficient policy learning. By adopting video prediction as a pre-training task, we use a Transformer-based Conditional Variational Autoencoder (CVAE) to learn visual dynamics representations. The pre-trained visual dynamics representations capture the visual dynamics prior knowledge in the videos. This abstract prior knowledge can be readily adapted to downstream tasks and aligned with executable actions through online adaptation. We conduct experiments on a series of robotics visual control tasks and verify that PVDR is an effective form for pre-training with videos to promote policy learning.

Exploring the Coordination of Frequency and Attention in Masked Image Modeling

Recently, masked image modeling (MIM), which learns visual representations by reconstructing the masked patches of an image, has dominated self-supervised learning in computer vision. However, the pre-training of MIM always takes massive time due to the large-scale data and large-size backbones. We mainly attribute it to the random patch masking in previous MIM works, which fails to leverage the crucial semantic information for effective visual representation learning. To tackle this issue, we propose the Frequency \& Attention-driven Masking and Throwing Strategy (FAMT), which can extract semantic patches and reduce the number of training patches to boost model performance and training efficiency simultaneously. Specifically, FAMT utilizes the self-attention mechanism to extract semantic information from the image for masking during training in an unsupervised manner. However, attention alone could sometimes focus on inappropriate areas regarding the semantic information. Thus, we are motivated to incorporate the information from the frequency domain into the self-attention mechanism to derive the sampling weights for masking, which captures semantic patches for visual representation learning. Furthermore, we introduce a patch throwing strategy based on the derived sampling weights to reduce the training cost. FAMT can be seamlessly integrated as a plug-and-play module and surpasses previous works, \emph{e.g.} reducing the training phase time by nearly $50\%$ and improving the linear probing accuracy of MAE by $1.3\% \sim 3.9\%$ across various datasets, including CIFAR-10/100, Tiny ImageNet, and ImageNet-1K. FAMT also demonstrates superior performance in downstream detection and segmentation tasks.

AnyLogo: Symbiotic Subject-Driven Diffusion System with Gemini Status

Diffusion models have made compelling progress on facilitating high-throughput daily production. Nevertheless, the appealing customized requirements are remain suffered from instance-level finetuning for authentic fidelity. Prior zero-shot customization works achieve the semantic consistence through the condensed injection of identity features, while addressing detailed low-level signatures through complex model configurations and subject-specific fabrications, which significantly break the statistical coherence within the overall system and limit the applicability across various scenarios. To facilitate the generic signature concentration with rectified efficiency, we present \textbf{AnyLogo}, a zero-shot region customizer with remarkable detail consistency, building upon the symbiotic diffusion system with eliminated cumbersome designs. Streamlined as vanilla image generation, we discern that the rigorous signature extraction and creative content generation are promisingly compatible and can be systematically recycled within a single denoising model. In place of the external configurations, the gemini status of the denoising model promote the reinforced subject transmission efficiency and disentangled semantic-signature space with continuous signature decoration. Moreover, the sparse recycling paradigm is adopted to prevent the duplicated risk with compressed transmission quota for diversified signature stimulation. Extensive experiments on constructed logo-level benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness and practicability of our methods.

CPAFT: A Consistent Parallel Advancing Front Technique for Unstructured Triangular/Tetrahedral Mesh Generation

Compared with the remarkable progress made in parallel numerical solvers of partial differential equations, the development of algorithms for generating unstructured triangular/tetrahedral meshes has been relatively sluggish. In this paper, we propose a novel, consistent parallel advancing front technique (CPAFT) by combining the advancing front technique, the domain decomposition method based on space-filling curves, the distributed forest-of-overlapping-trees approach, and the consistent parallel maximal independent set algorithm. The newly proposed CPAFT algorithm can mathematically ensure that the generated unstructured triangular/tetrahedral meshes are independent of the number of processors and the implementation of domain decomposition. Several numerical tests are conducted to validate the parallel consistency and outstanding parallel efficiency of the proposed algorithm, which scales effectively up to two thousand processors. This is, as far as we know, the first parallel unstructured triangular/tetrahedral mesh generator with scalability to O(1,000) CPU processors.

Fisheye-GS: Lightweight and Extensible Gaussian Splatting Module for Fisheye Cameras

Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has garnered attention for its high fidelity and real-time rendering. However, adapting 3DGS to different camera models, particularly fisheye lenses, poses challenges due to the unique 3D to 2D projection calculation. Additionally, there are inefficiencies in the tile-based splatting, especially for the extreme curvature and wide field of view of fisheye lenses, which are crucial for its broader real-life applications. To tackle these challenges, we introduce Fisheye-GS.This innovative method recalculates the projection transformation and its gradients for fisheye cameras. Our approach can be seamlessly integrated as a module into other efficient 3D rendering methods, emphasizing its extensibility, lightweight nature, and modular design. Since we only modified the projection component, it can also be easily adapted for use with different camera models. Compared to methods that train after undistortion, our approach demonstrates a clear improvement in visual quality.

Reinforcement Learning Friendly Vision-Language Model for Minecraft

One of the essential missions in the AI research community is to build an autonomous embodied agent that can achieve high-level performance across a wide spectrum of tasks. However, acquiring or manually designing rewards for all open-ended tasks is unrealistic. In this paper, we propose a novel cross-modal contrastive learning framework architecture, CLIP4MC, aiming to learn a reinforcement learning (RL) friendly vision-language model (VLM) that serves as an intrinsic reward function for open-ended tasks. Simply utilizing the similarity between the video snippet and the language prompt is not RL-friendly since standard VLMs may only capture the similarity at a coarse level. To achieve RL-friendliness, we incorporate the task completion degree into the VLM training objective, as this information can assist agents in distinguishing the importance between different states. Moreover, we provide neat YouTube datasets based on the large-scale YouTube database provided by MineDojo. Specifically, two rounds of filtering operations guarantee that the dataset covers enough essential information and that the video-text pair is highly correlated. Empirically, we demonstrate that the proposed method achieves better performance on RL tasks compared with baselines. The code and datasets are available at https://github.com/PKU-RL/CLIP4MC.

A Survey on Self-supervised Learning: Algorithms, Applications, and Future Trends

Deep supervised learning algorithms typically require a large volume of labeled data to achieve satisfactory performance. However, the process of collecting and labeling such data can be expensive and time-consuming. Self-supervised learning (SSL), a subset of unsupervised learning, aims to learn discriminative features from unlabeled data without relying on human-annotated labels. SSL has garnered significant attention recently, leading to the development of numerous related algorithms. However, there is a dearth of comprehensive studies that elucidate the connections and evolution of different SSL variants. This paper presents a review of diverse SSL methods, encompassing algorithmic aspects, application domains, three key trends, and open research questions. Firstly, we provide a detailed introduction to the motivations behind most SSL algorithms and compare their commonalities and differences. Secondly, we explore representative applications of SSL in domains such as image processing, computer vision, and natural language processing. Lastly, we discuss the three primary trends observed in SSL research and highlight the open questions that remain. Accelerating Parallel Sampling of Diffusion Models

Diffusion models have emerged as state-of-the-art generative models for image generation. However, sampling from diffusion models is usually time-consuming due to the inherent autoregressive nature of their sampling process. In this work, we propose a novel approach that accelerates the sampling of diffusion models by parallelizing the autoregressive process. Specifically, we reformulate the sampling process as solving a system of triangular nonlinear equations through fixed-point iteration. With this innovative formulation, we explore several systematic techniques to further reduce the iteration steps required by the solving process. Applying these techniques, we introduce ParaTAA, a universal and training-free parallel sampling algorithm that can leverage extra computational and memory resources to increase the sampling speed. Our experiments demonstrate that ParaTAA can decrease the inference steps required by common sequential sampling algorithms such as DDIM and DDPM by a factor of 4$\sim$14 times. Notably, when applying ParaTAA with 100 steps DDIM for Stable Diffusion, a widely-used text-to-image diffusion model, it can produce the same images as the sequential sampling in only 7 inference steps. The code is available at https://github.com/TZW1998/ParaTAA-Diffusion.

"Pass the butter": A study on desktop-classic multitasking robotic arm based on advanced YOLOv7 and BERT

In recent years, various intelligent autonomous robots have begun to appear in daily life and production. Desktop-level robots are characterized by their flexible deployment, rapid response, and suitability for light workload environments. In order to meet the current societal demand for service robot technology, this study proposes using a miniaturized desktop-level robot (by ROS) as a carrier, locally deploying a natural language model (NLP-BERT), and integrating visual recognition (CV-YOLO) and speech recognition technology (ASR-Whisper) as inputs to achieve autonomous decision-making and rational action by the desktop robot. Three comprehensive experiments were designed to validate the robotic arm, and the results demonstrate excellent performance using this approach across all three experiments. In Task 1, the execution rates for speech recognition and action performance were 92.6% and 84.3%, respectively. In Task 2, the highest execution rates under the given conditions reached 92.1% and 84.6%, while in Task 3, the highest execution rates were 95.2% and 80.8%, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed solution integrating ASR, NLP, and other technologies on edge devices is feasible and provides a technical and engineering foundation for realizing multimodal desktop-level robots.

DiffAug: Enhance Unsupervised Contrastive Learning with Domain-Knowledge-Free Diffusion-based Data Augmentation

Unsupervised Contrastive learning has gained prominence in fields such as vision, and biology, leveraging predefined positive/negative samples for representation learning. Data augmentation, categorized into hand-designed and model-based methods, has been identified as a crucial component for enhancing contrastive learning. However, hand-designed methods require human expertise in domain-specific data while sometimes distorting the meaning of the data. In contrast, generative model-based approaches usually require supervised or large-scale external data, which has become a bottleneck constraining model training in many domains. To address the problems presented above, this paper proposes DiffAug, a novel unsupervised contrastive learning technique with diffusion mode-based positive data generation. DiffAug consists of a semantic encoder and a conditional diffusion model; the conditional diffusion model generates new positive samples conditioned on the semantic encoding to serve the training of unsupervised contrast learning. With the help of iterative training of the semantic encoder and diffusion model, DiffAug improves the representation ability in an uninterrupted and unsupervised manner. Experimental evaluations show that DiffAug outperforms hand-designed and SOTA model-based augmentation methods on DNA sequence, visual, and bio-feature datasets. The code for review is released at \url{https://github.com/zangzelin/code_diffaug}.

A continuous perspective on the inertial corrected primal-dual proximal splitting

We give a continuous perspective on the Inertial Corrected Primal-Dual Proximal Splitting (IC-PDPS) proposed by Valkonen ({\it SIAM J. Optim.}, 30(2): 1391--1420, 2020) for solving saddle-point problems. The algorithm possesses nonergodic convergence rate and admits a tight preconditioned proximal point formulation which involves both inertia and additional correction. Based on new understandings on the relation between the discrete step size and rescaling effect, we rebuild IC-PDPS as a semi-implicit Euler scheme with respect to its iterative sequences and integrated parameters. This leads to two novel second-order ordinary differential equation (ODE) models that are equivalent under proper time transformation, and also provides an alternative interpretation from the continuous point of view. Besides, we present the convergence analysis of the Lagrangian gap along the continuous trajectory by using proper Lyapunov functions.
