All-optical routing of single photons with multiple input and output ports by interferences

We propose a waveguide-cavity coupled system to achieve the routing of photons by the phases of other photons. Our router has four input ports and four output ports. The transport of the coherent-state photons injected through any input port can be controlled by the phases of the coherent-state photons injected through other input ports. This control can be achieved when the mean numbers of the routed and control photons are small enough and require no additional control fields. Therefore, the all-optical routing of photons can be achieved at the single-photon level.

Local convertibility and the quantum simulation of edge states in many-body systems

In some many-body systems, certain ground state entanglement (Renyi) entropies increase even as the correlation length decreases. This entanglement non-monotonicity is a potential indicator of non-classicality. In this work we demonstrate that such a phenomenon, known as non-local convertibility, is due to the edge state (de)construction occurring in the system. To this end, we employ the example of the Ising chain, displaying an order-disorder quantum phase transitions. Employing both analytical and numerical methods, we compute entanglement entropies for various system bipartitions (A|B) and consider ground states with and without Majorana edge states. We find that the thermal ground states, enjoying the Hamiltonian symmetries, show non-local convertibility if either A or B are smaller than, or of the order of, the correlation length. In contrast, the ordered (symmetry breaking) ground state is always locally convertible. The edge states behavior explains all these results and could disclose a paradigm to understand local convertibility in other quantum phases of matter. The connection we establish between convertibility and non-local, quantum correlations provides a clear criterion of which features a universal quantum simulator should possess to outperform a classical machine.

Magnetisms in $p$-type monolayer gallium chalcogenides (GaSe, GaS)

Magnetisms in $p$-type monolayer GaX (X=S,Se) is investigated by performing density-functional calculations. Due to the large density of states near the valence band edge, these monolayer semiconductors are ferromagnetic within a small range of hole doping. The intrinsic Ga vacancies can promote local magnetic moment while Se vacancies cannot. Magnetic coupling between vacancy-induced local moments is ferromagnetic and surprisingly long-range. The results indicate that magnetization can be induced by hole doping and can be tuned by controlled defect generation.

Quantum speed limits for Bell-diagonal states

Bounds of the minimum evolution time between two distinguishable states of a system can help to assess the maximal speed of quantum computers and communication channels. We study the quantum speed limit time of a composite quantum states in the presence of nondissipative decoherence. For the initial states with maximally mixed marginals, we obtain the exactly expressions of quantum speed limit time which mainly depend on the parameters of the initial states and the decoherence channels. Furthermore, by calculating quantum speed limit time for the time-dependent states started from a class of initial states, we discover that the quantum speed limit time gradually decreases in time, and the decay rate of the quantum speed limit time would show a sudden change at a certain critical time. Interestingly, at the same critical time, the composite system dynamics would exhibit a sudden transition from classical to quantum decoherence.

Classification of no-signaling correlations and the guess your neighbor's input game

We formulate a series of non-trivial equalities which are satisfied by all no-signaling correlations, meaning that no faster-than-light communication is allowed with the resource of these correlations. All quantum and classical correlations satisfy these equalities since they are no-signaling. By applying these equalities, we provide a general framework for solving the multipartite "guess your neighbor's input" (GYNI) game, which is naturally no-signaling but shows conversely that general no-signaling correlations are actually more non-local than those allowed by quantum mechanics. We confirm the validity of our method for number of players from 3 up to 19, thus providing convincing evidence that it works for the general case. In addition, we solve analytically the tripartite GYNI and obtain a computable measure of supra-quantum correlations. This result simplifies the defined optimization procedure to an analytic formula, thus characterizing explicitly the boundary between quantum and supra-quantum correlations. In addition, we show that the gap between quantum and no-signaling boundaries containing supra-quantum correlations can be closed by local orthogonality conditions in the tripartite case. Our results provide a computable classification of no-signaling correlations.

Quantum-enhanced metrology for multiple phase estimation with noise

We present a general framework to study the simultaneous estimation of multiple phases in the presence of noise as a discretized model for phase imaging. This approach can lead to nontrivial bounds of the precision for multiphase estimation. Our results show that simultaneous estimation (SE) of multiple phases is always better than individual estimation (IE) of each phase even in noisy environment. However with $d$ being the number of phases, the $O(d)$ advantage in the variance of the estimation, with which SE outperforms IE schemes for noiseless processes, may disappear asymptotically. When noise is low, those bounds recover the Heisenberg scale with the $O(d)$ advantage. The utility of the bound of multiple phase estimation for photon loss channels is exemplified.

Control of single-photon transport in a one-dimensional waveguide by another single photon

We study the controllable single-photon transport in a one-dimensional (1D) waveguide with nonlinear dispersion relation coupled to a three-level emitter in cascade configuration. An extra cavity field was introduced to drive one of the level transitions of the emitter. In the resonance case, when the extra cavity does not contain photons, the input single photon will be reflected, and when the cavity contains one photon, the full transmission of the input single photon can be obtained. In the off-resonance case, the single-photon transport can also be controlled by the parameters of the cavity. Therefore, we have shown that the single-photon transport can be controlled by an extra cavity field.

Quantum Cloning Machines and the Applications

No-cloning theorem is fundamental for quantum mechanics and for quantum information science that states an unknown quantum state cannot be cloned perfectly. However, we can try to clone a quantum state approximately with the optimal fidelity, or instead, we can try to clone it perfectly with the largest probability. Thus various quantum cloning machines have been designed for different quantum information protocols. Specifically, quantum cloning machines can be designed to analyze the security of quantum key distribution protocols such as BB84 protocol, six-state protocol, B92 protocol and their generalizations. Some well-known quantum cloning machines include universal quantum cloning machine, phase-covariant cloning machine, the asymmetric quantum cloning machine and the probabilistic quantum cloning machine etc. In the past years, much progress has been made in studying quantum cloning machines and their applications and implementations, both theoretically and experimentally. In this review, we will give a complete description of those important developments about quantum cloning and some related topics. On the other hand, this review is self-consistent, and in particular, we try to present some detailed formulations so that further study can be taken based on those results.

Quantum discord and measurement-induced disturbance in the background of dilaton black holes

We study the dynamics of classical correlation, quantum discord and measurement-induced disturbance of Dirac fields in the background of a dilaton black hole. We present an alternative physical interpretation of single mode approximation for Dirac fields in black hole spacetimes. We show that the classical and quantum correlations are degraded as the increase of black hole's dilaton. We find that, comparing to the inertial systems, the quantum correlation measured by the one-side measuring discord is always not symmetric with respect to the measured subsystems, while the measurement-induced disturbance is symmetric. The symmetry of classical correlation and quantum discord is influenced by gravitation produced by the dilaton of the black hole.

Dense network of one-dimensional mid-gap metallic modes in monolayer MoSe2 and their spatial undulations

We report the observation of a dense triangular network of one-dimensional (1D) metallic modes in a continuous and uniform monolayer of MoSe2 grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS) studies show these 1D modes are mid-gap states at inversion domain boundaries. STM/STS measurements further reveal intensity undulations of the metallic modes, presumably arising from the superlattice potentials due to moire pattern and the quantum confinement effect. A dense network of the metallic modes with high density of states is of great potential for heterocatalysis applications. The interconnection of such mid-gap 1D conducting channels may also imply new transport behaviors distinct from the 2D bulk.

Multipartite distribution property of one way discord beyond measurement

We investigate the distribution property of one way discord in multipartite system by introducing the concept of polygamy deficit for one way discord. The difference between one way discord and quantum discord is analogue to the difference between entanglement of assistance and entanglement of formation. For tripartite pure states, two kinds of polygamy deficits are presented with the equivalent expressions and physical interpretations regardless of measurement. For four-partite pure states, we provide a condition which makes one way discord polygamy being satisfied. Those results can be applicable to multipartite quantum systems and are complementary to our understanding of the shareability of quantum correlations.

Global quantum discord and quantum phase transition in XY model

We study the relationship between the behavior of global quantum correlations and quantum phase transitions in XY model. We find that the two kinds of phase transitions in the studied model can be characterized by the features of global quantum discord (GQD) and the corresponding quantum correlations. We demonstrate that the maximum of the sum of all the nearest neighbor bipartite GQDs is effective and accurate for signaling the Ising quantum phase transition, in contrast, the sudden change of GQD is very suitable for characterizing another phase transition in the XY model. This may shed lights on the study of properties of quantum correlations in different quantum phases.

Anisotropic Rabi model

We define the anisotropic Rabi model as the generalization of the spin-boson Rabi model: The Hamiltonian system breaks the parity symmetry; the rotating and counter-rotating interactions are governed by two different coupling constants; a further parameter introduces a phase factor in the counter-rotating terms. The exact energy spectrum and eigenstates of the generalized model is worked out. The solution is obtained as an elaboration of a recent proposed method for the isotropic limit of the model. In this way, we provide a long sought solution of a cascade of models with immediate relevance in different physical fields, including i) quantum optics: two-level atom in single mode cross electric and magnetic fields; ii) solid state physics: electrons in semiconductors with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling; iii) mesoscopic physics: Josephson junctions flux-qubit quantum circuits.

Exclusive quantum channels in quantum networks

Quantum state can be teleported to a remote site by only local measurement and classical communication if the prior Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen quantum channel is available between the sender and the receiver. Those quantum channels shared by multiple nodes can constitute a quantum network. Yet, studies on the efficiency of quantum communication between nodes of quantum networks remain limited, which differs from classical case in that the quantum channel will be consumed if teleportation is performed. Here, we introduce the exclusive quantum channels (EQC) as the measure of efficiency of quantum information transmission. It quantifies the amount of quantum information which can be teleported between nodes in a quantum network. We show that different types of EQC are local quantities with effective circles. Significantly, capacity of quantum communication of quantum networks quantified by EQC is independent of distance for the communicating nodes. Thus, the quantum network can be dealt as the isotropic medium where quantum communication is no-decaying. EQC are studied by both analytical and numerical methods. The EQC can be enhanced by transformations of lattices of quantum network via entanglement swapping. Our result opens the avenue in studying the quantum communication of the quantum networks.

Non-zero total correlation means non-zero quantum correlation

We investigated the super quantum discord based on weak measurements. The super quantum discord is an extension of the standard quantum discord defined by projective measurements and also describes the quantumness of correlations. We provide some equivalent conditions for zero super quantum discord by using quantum discord, classical correlation and mutual information. In particular, we find that the super quantum discord is zero only for product states, which have zero mutual information. This result suggests that non-zero correlations can always be detected using the quantum correlation with weak measurements. As an example, we present the assisted state-discrimination method.

Quantum advantage by weak measurements

Weak measurements may result in extra quantity of quantumness of correlations compared with standard projective measurement on a bipartite quantum state. We show that the quantumness of correlations by weak measurements can be consumed for information encoding which is only accessible by coherent quantum interactions. Then it can be considered as a resource for quantum information processing and can quantify this quantum advantage. We conclude that weak measurements can create more valuable quantum correlation.

The effect of As-Chain layers in CaFeAs$_2$

The new discovered iron-based superconductors have chain-like As layers. These layers generate an additional 3-dimensional hole pocket and cone-like electron pockets. The former is attributed to the Ca $d$ and As1 $p_z$ orbitals and the latter are attributed to the anisotropic Dirac cone, contributed by As1 $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals. We find that large gaps on these pockets open in the collinear antiferromagnetic ground state of CaFeAs$_2$, suggesting that the chain-like As layers are strongly coupled to FeAs layers. Moreover due to the low symmetry crystal induced by the As layers, the bands attributed to FeAs layers in $k_y=π$ plane are two-fold degenerate but in $k_x=π$ plane are lifted. This degeneracy is protected by a hidden symmetry $\hatΥ=\hat{T}\hat{R}_y$. Ignoring the electron cones, the materials can be well described by a six-band model, including five Fe $d$ and As1 $p_z$ orbitals. We suggest that these new features may help us to identify the sign change and pairing symmetry in iron based superconductors.

A quantum algorithm for solving some discrete mathematical problems by probing their energy spectra

When a probe qubit is coupled to a quantum register that represents a physical system, the probe qubit will exhibit a dynamical response only when it is resonant with a transition in the system. Using this principle, we propose a quantum algorithm for solving discrete mathematical problems based on the circuit model. Our algorithm has favorable scaling properties in solving some discrete mathematical problems.
