When are supercapacitors practically feasible in electric vehicles? A multi-dimensional HESS techno-economic evaluation

While the hybrid energy storage system (HESS) can theoretically mitigate battery degradation in electric vehicles, its practical implementation remains highly limited. To delineate the specific scenarios and application boundaries where supercapacitors remain feasible, this study proposes a multi-dimensional techno-economic feasibility evaluation framework. First, a cross-vehicle sizing method based on dynamic programming is established to quantify physical mass-volume packaging constraints and identify feasible supercapacitor candidates across different vehicle types. Building upon the optimal sizing parameters derived from the battery aging Pareto front, an expert-guided deep reinforcement learning energy management strategy is integrated to yield near-optimal online performance, ensuring a fair life-cycle economic assessment. Finally, a comprehensive feasibility matrix is constructed to systematically evaluate mass, volume, battery lifespan, additional supercapacitor costs, operation cost, future energy storage prices, and the influence of emerging solid-state batteries. Results reveal that city buses remain the most promising vehicle type for HESS due to minimal additional costs and sufficient packaging space. Current mass-volume penalties and limited economic benefits hinder HESS application in passenger vehicles and heavy-duty trucks, respectively. This situation may only improve if supercapacitor prices drop significantly in the future. Quantified analysis shows that higher load-frequency characteristics generally favor HESS benefits within the same vehicle platform, while the overall techno-economic feasibility across vehicles is jointly influenced by load characteristics and vehicle configuration. Furthermore, looking toward the 2030+ solid-state battery era, we highlight that integrating increasingly affordable supercapacitors can provide substantial asset protection leverage.

Revisiting Lossy Verification in Speculative Decoding: Mechanisms, Trade-offs, and Failure Modes

Speculative Decoding (SD) accelerates large language model inference by allowing a lightweight draft model to propose tokens that are subsequently verified in parallel by a larger target model. Recent approaches introduce lossy verification schemes to further improve efficiency by relaxing strict distributional matching. Yet such relaxation silently rewrites the decoding distribution, and the resulting acceleration can come at the cost of unstable, sometimes severely degraded generation quality. In this work, we present a principled analysis of the distributions induced by lossy verification methods. We show that many seemingly distinct approaches differ only superficially and can be unified into two categories: truncation-based verification and collaborative verification. We further construct a diagnostic evaluation framework across curated benchmarks. For truncation-based methods, we identify a fundamental pitfall-performance can degrade significantly compared to the true truncation sampling baseline due to distributional distortion. For collaborative verification, we reveal that well-designed relaxation principles, namely overshoot suppression and supervision quality, matter far more than the linear interpolation between draft and target. Endoscopic Depth Estimation Based on Deep Learning: A Survey

Endoscopic depth estimation is a critical technology for improving the safety and precision of minimally invasive surgery. It has attracted considerable attention from researchers in medical imaging, computer vision, and robotics. Over the past decade, a large number of methods have been developed. Despite the existence of several related surveys, a comprehensive overview focusing on recent deep learning-based techniques is still limited. This paper endeavors to bridge this gap by comprehensively reviewing the state-of-the-art literature. Specifically, we provide a thorough survey of the field from three key perspectives: data, methods, and applications. Firstly, at the data level, we describe the acquisition process of publicly available datasets. Secondly, at the methodological level, we introduce both monocular and stereo deep learning-based approaches for endoscopic depth estimation. Thirdly, at the application level, we identify the specific challenges and corresponding solutions for the clinical implementation of depth estimation technology, situated within concrete clinical scenarios. Finally, we outline potential directions for future research, such as domain adaptation, real-time implementation, and the synergistic fusion of depth information with sensor technologies, thereby providing a valuable starting point for researchers to engage with and advance the field toward clinical translation.
