Double Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in a Tripod-type Atom System

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) phenomenon in a four level atomic system with tripod configuration is studied. The results show that this configuration is equivalent to the combination of two single three-level $Λ$ configurations, which, under certain conditions, results in the so-called double-EIT (DEIT) phenomenon. The properties of the double transparency windows for DEIT are discussed in detail and the possible experimental scheme is proposed.

Detuned Electromagnetically Induced Transparency in an $N$-type Atom

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an $N$ configuration is studied under both resonant and off-resonant conditions. In a certain off-resonant condition the dark state of the four level system, which is almost the same as the resonant dark state in $Λ$ configuration, is rebuilt. The actual system with damping is examined using optical Bloch equation, both numerically and analytically. Based on this detuned dark state, some new applications with frequency shifts can be realized.

Manipulation of the quantum state by Majorana transition in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Manipulation of the quantum state by the Majorana transition in spinor BEC system has been realized by altering the rotation frequency of the magnetic field's direction. This kind of manipulation method has no limitation on the transition speed in principle and the system is well closed, which provides a new and superior tool to manipulate quantum states. Using this methord on pulsed atom laser, multicomponent spinor atom laser is generated. We demonstrate that the experiment results are agreed with the theoretical predication.

Control momentum entanglement with atomic spontaneously generated coherence

With atomic spontaneously generated coherence (SGC), we propose a novel scheme to coherently control the atom--photon momentum entanglement through atomic internal coherence. A novel phenomena of ``phase entanglement in momentum'' is proposed, and we found, under certain conditions, that super--high degree of momentum entanglement can be produced with this scheme.

Momentum entanglement and disentanglement between atom and photon

With the quantum interference between two transition pathways, we demonstrate a novel scheme to coherently control the momentum entanglement between a single atom and a single photon. The unavoidable disentanglement is also studied from the first principle, which indicates that the stably entangled atom--photon system with superhigh degree of entanglement may be realized with this scheme under certain conditions.

Low field phase diagram of spin-Hall effect in the mesoscopic regime

When a mesoscopic two dimensional four-terminal Hall cross-bar with Rashba and/or Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (SOI) is subjected to a perpendicular uniform magnetic field $B$, both integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) and mesoscopic spin-Hall effect (MSHE) may exist when disorder strength $W$ in the sample is weak. We have calculated the low field "phase diagram" of MSHE in the $(B,W)$ plane for disordered samples in the IQHE regime. For weak disorder, MSHE conductance $G_{sH}$ and its fluctuations $rms(G_{SH})$ vanish identically on even numbered IQHE plateaus, they have finite values on those odd numbered plateaus induced by SOI, and they have values $G_{SH}=1/2$ and $rms(G_{SH})=0$ on those odd numbered plateaus induced by Zeeman energy. For moderate disorder, the system crosses over into a regime where both $G_{sH}$ and $rms(G_{SH})$ are finite. A larger disorder drives the system into a chaotic regime where $G_{sH}=0$ while $rms(G_{SH})$ is finite. Finally at large disorder both $G_{sH}$ and $rms(G_{SH})$ vanish. We present the physics behind this ``phase diagram".

On the Poisson Approximation to Photon Distribution for Faint Lasers

It is proved, that for a certain kind of input distribution, the strongly binomially attenuated photon number distribution can well be approximated by a Poisson distribution. This explains why we can adopt poissonian distribution as the photon number statistics for faint lasers. The error of such an approximation is quantitatively estimated. Numerical tests are carried out, which coincide with our theoretical estimations. This work lays a sound mathematical foundation for the well-known intuitive idea which has been widely used in quantum cryptography.

Universal spin-Hall conductance fluctuations in two dimensions

We report a theoretical investigation on spin-Hall conductance fluctuation of disordered four terminal devices in the presence of Rashba or/and Dresselhaus spin-orbital interactions in two dimensions. As a function of disorder, the spin-Hall conductance $G_{sH}$ shows ballistic, diffusive and insulating transport regimes. For given spin-orbit interactions, a universal spin-Hall conductance fluctuation (USCF) is found in the diffusive regime. The value of the USCF depends on the spin-orbit coupling $t_{so}$, but is independent of other system parameters. It is also independent of whether Rashba or Dresselhaus or both spin-orbital interactions are present. When $t_{so}$ is comparable to the hopping energy $t$, the USCF is a universal number $\sim 0.18 e/4π$. The distribution of $G_{sH}$ crosses over from a Gaussian distribution in the metallic regime to a non-Gaussian distribution in the insulating regime as the disorder strength is increased.

First principles modeling of tunnel magnetoresistance of Fe/MgO/Fe trilayers

By carrying out density functional theory analysis within the Keldysh non-equilibrium Green's functional formalism, we have calculated the nonlinear and non-equilibrium quantum transport properties of Fe/MgO/Fe trilayer structures as a function of external bias voltage. For well relaxed atomic structures of the trilayer, the equilibrium tunnel magnetoresistance ratio (TMR) is found to be very large and also fairly stable against small variations in the atomic structure. As a function of external bias voltage, the TMR reduces monotonically to zero with a voltage scale of about 1V, in agreement with experimental observations. We present understanding of the nonequilibrium transport properties by investigating microscopic details of the scattering states and the Bloch bands of the Fe leads.

Nonequilibrium current driven by a step voltage pulse: an exact solution

One of the most important problems in nanoelectronic device theory is to estimate how fast or how slow a quantum device can turn on/off a current. For an arbitrary noninteracting phase-coherent device scattering region connected to the outside world by leads, we have derived an exact solution for the nonequilibrium, nonlinear, and time-dependent current driven by both up- and down-step pulsed voltages. Our analysis is based on the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's functions formalism where the electronic structure of the leads as well as the scattering region are treated on an equal footing. A model calculation for a quantum dot with a Lorentzian linewidth function shows that the time-dependent current dynamics display interesting finite-bandwidth effects not captured by the commonly used wideband approximation.

Conservation of spin current

The conventional definition of spin-current, namely spin density multiplied by the group velocity, is not a conserved quantity due to possible spin rotations caused by spin-orbit (SO) interaction. However, in a model with spin-spin interactions, rotation of a spin causes a dynamic response of surrounding spins that opposes the rotation. Such a many-body effect restores the spin-current conservation. Here we prove that the non-conservation problem of spin-current can be resolved if a self-consistent spin-spin interaction is included in the analysis. We further derive a spin-conductance formula which partitions spin-current into different leads of a multi-lead conductor.

The Population Oscillation of Multicomponent Spinor Bose-Einstein Condensate Induced by Nonadiabatic Transitions

The generation of the population oscillation of the multicomponent spinor Bose-Einstein condensate is demonstrated in this paper. We observe and examine the nonsynchronous decreasing processes of the magnetic fields generated between quadrupole coils and Ioffe coils during the switch-off of the quadrupole-Ioffe-configuration trap, which is considered to induce a nonadiabatic transition. Starting from the two-level Schrödinger equation, we have done some numerical fitting and derived an analytical expression identical to the results of E. Majorana and C. Zener, of which both the results well match the experimental data.

Entanglement in resonant photon scattering

Single--photon which is initially uncorrelated with atom, will evolve to be entangled with the atom on their continuous kinetic variables in the process of resonant scattering. We find the relations between the entanglement and their physical control parameters, which indicates that high entanglement can be reached by broadening the scale of the atomic wave or squeezing the linewidth of the incident single--photon pulse.

Ab initio analysis of electron-phonon coupling in molecular devices

We report first principles analysis of electron-phonon coupling in molecular devices under external bias voltage and during current flow. Our theory and computational framework are based carrying out density functional theory within the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. We analyze which molecular vibrational modes are most relevant to charge transport under nonequilibrium conditions. For a molecular tunnel junction of a 1,4-benzenedithiolate molecule contacted by two leads, the low-lying modes of the vibration are found to be most important. As a function of bias voltage, the electron-phonon coupling strength can change drastically while the vibrational spectrum changes at a few percent level.

Detection of Single Electron Charging in an Individual InAs Quantum Dot by Noncontact Atomic Force Microscopy

Single electron charging in an individual InAs quantum dot was observed by electrostatic force measurements with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The resonant frequency shift and the dissipated energy of an oscillating AFM cantilever were measured as a function of the tip-back electrode voltage and the resulting spectra show distinct jumps when the tip was positioned above the dot. The observed jumps in the frequency shift, with corresponding peaks in dissipation, are attributed to a single electron tunneling between the dot and the back electrode governed by Coulomb blockade effect, and are consistent with a model based on the free energy of the system. The observed phenomenon may be regarded as the ``force version'' of the Coulomb blockade effect.

Quantum transport theory for nanostructures with Rashba spin-orbital interaction

We report on a general theory for analyzing quantum transport through devices in the Metal-QD-Metal configuration where QD is a quantum dot or the device scattering region which contains Rashba spin-orbital and electron-electron interactions. The metal leads may or may not be ferromagnetic, they are assumed to weakly couple to the QD region. Our theory is formulated by second quantizing the Rashba spin-orbital interaction in spectral space (instead of real space), and quantum transport is then analyzed within the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The Rashba interaction causes two main effects to the Hamiltonian: (i) it gives rise to an extra spin-dependent phase factor in the coupling matrix elements between the leads and the QD; (ii) it gives rise to an inter-level spin-flip term but forbids any intra-level spin-flips. Our formalism provides a starting point for analyzing many quantum transport issues where spin-orbital effects are important. As an example, we investigate transport properties of a Aharnov-Bohm ring in which a QD having Rashba spin-orbital and e-e interactions is located in one arm of the ring. A substantial spin-polarized conductance or current emerges in this device due to a combined effect of a magnetic flux and the Rashba interaction. The direction and strength of the spin-polarization are shown to be controllable by both the magnetic flux and a gate voltage.

Anomalous Kondo effect of indirectly coupled double quantum dots

We report theoretical investigations of indirectly coupled double quantum dots (QD) side connected to an one-dimensional quantum wire. Due to quantum interference controlled by the parameter $k_F L$, with $k_F$ the Fermi wave number of the wire and $L$ the distance between the two QDs, distinctly different Kondo resonances are predicted depending on the range of $k_F L$. A true bound Kondo states is found while an anomalous Kondo resonance gives rise to both reduction and enhancement of conductance.

Gate-controllable spin-battery

We propose a gate-controllable spin-battery for spin current. The spin-battery consists of a lateral double quantum dot under a uniform magnetic field. A finite DC spin-current is driven out of the device by controlling a set of gate voltages. Spin-current can also be delivered in the absence of charge-current. The proposed device should be realizable using present technology at low temperature.
