Sliding Flexoelectricity in Two-Dimensional van der Waals Systems

Two-dimensional sliding ferroelectrics, with their unique stacking degrees of freedom, offer a different approach to manipulate polarization by interlayer sliding. Bending sliding ferroelectrics inevitably leads to interlayer sliding motion, thus altering stacking orders and polarization properties. Here, by using machine-learning force field, we investigate the effects of bending deformation on geometries, stackings, energies, and polarizations in sliding ferroelectric bilayer h-BN and 3R-MoS2. We predict that bent ferroelectric bilayer forms irreversible kinks instead of arc when the bending angle exceeds a critical value. We demonstrate that the kinks originate from the competition between bending energy and interlayer van der Waals energy. The kink contains a ferroelectric domain wall that reverses the polarization, effectively inducing a flexoelectric effect. We term this phenomenon "sliding flexoelectricity" to distinguish it from conventional strain-gradient-induced flexoelectricity.

Phase engineering of giant second harmonic generation in Bi$_2$O$_2$Se

Two-dimensional (2D) materials with remarkable second-harmonic generation (SHG) hold promise for future on-chip nonlinear optics. Relevant materials with both giant SHG response and environmental stability are long-sought targets. Here, we demonstrate the enormous SHG from the phase engineering of a high-performance semiconductor, Bi$_2$O$_2$Se (BOS), under uniaxial strain. SHG signals captured in strained 20 nm-BOS films exceed those of NbOI$_2$ and NbOCl$_2$ of similar thickness by a factor of 10, and are four orders of magnitude higher than monolayer-MoS$_2$, resulting in a significant second-order nonlinear susceptibility on the order of 1 nm V$^{-1}$. Intriguingly, the strain enables continuous adjustment of the ferroelectric phase transition across room temperature. Consequently, an exceptionally large tunability of SHG, approximately six orders of magnitude, is achieved through strain or thermal modulation. This colossal SHG, originating from the geometric phase of Bloch wave functions and coupled with sensitive tunability through multiple approaches in this air-stable 2D semiconductor, opens new possibilities for designing chip-scale, switchable nonlinear optical devices.

Geodesic nature and quantization of shift vector

We present the geodesic nature and quantization of geometric shift vector in quantum systems, with the parameter space defined by the Bloch momentum, using the Wilson loop approach. Our analysis extends to include bosonic phonon drag shift vectors with non-vertical transitions. We demonstrate that the gauge invariant shift vector can be quantized as integer values, analogous to the Euler characteristic based on the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for a manifold with a smooth boundary. We reveal intricate relationships among geometric quantities such as the shift vector, Berry curvature, and quantum metric. Our findings demonstrate that the loop integral of the shift vector in the quantized interband formula contributes to the non-quantized component of the trace of conductivity in the circular photogalvanic effect. The Wilson loop method facilitates first-principles calculations, providing insights in the geometric underpinnings of these interband gauge invariant quantities and shedding light on their nonlinear optical manifestations in real materials.

Improving Large Models with Small models: Lower Costs and Better Performance

Pretrained large models (PLMs), such as ChatGPT, have demonstrated remarkable performance across diverse tasks. However, the significant computational requirements of PLMs have discouraged most product teams from running or fine-tuning them. In such cases, to harness the exceptional performance of PLMs, one must rely on expensive APIs, thereby exacerbating the economic burden. Despite the overall inferior performance of small models, in specific distributions, they can achieve comparable or even superior results. Consequently, some input can be processed exclusively by small models. On the other hand, certain tasks can be broken down into multiple subtasks, some of which can be completed without powerful capabilities. Under these circumstances, small models can handle the simple subtasks, allowing large models to focus on challenging subtasks, thus improving the performance. We propose Data Shunt$^+$ (DS$^+$), a general paradigm for collaboration of small and large models. DS$^+$ not only substantially reduces the cost associated with querying large models but also effectively improves large models' performance. For instance, ChatGPT achieves an accuracy of $94.43\%$ on Amazon Product sentiment analysis, and DS$^+$ achieves an accuracy of $95.64\%$, while the cost has been reduced to only $31.18\%$. Besides, experiments also prove that the proposed collaborative-based paradigm can better inject specific task knowledge into PLMs compared to fine-tuning.

The Evolution of Applications, Hardware Design, and Channel Modeling for Terahertz (THz) Band Communications and Sensing: Ready for 6G?

For decades, the terahertz (THz) frequency band had been primarily explored in the context of radar, imaging, and spectroscopy, where multi-gigahertz (GHz) and even THz-wide channels and the properties of terahertz photons offered attractive target accuracy, resolution, and classification capabilities. Meanwhile, the exploitation of the terahertz band for wireless communication had originally been limited due to several reasons, including (i) no immediate need for such high data rates available via terahertz bands and (ii) challenges in designing sufficiently high power terahertz systems at reasonable cost and efficiency, leading to what was often referred to as "the terahertz gap". This roadmap paper first reviews the evolution of the hardware design approaches for terahertz systems, including electronic, photonic, and plasmonic approaches, and the understanding of the terahertz channel itself, in diverse scenarios, ranging from common indoors and outdoors scenarios to intra-body and outer-space environments. The article then summarizes the lessons learned during this multi-decade process and the cutting-edge state-of-the-art findings, including novel methods to quantify power efficiency, which will become more important in making design choices. Finally, the manuscript presents the authors' perspective and insights on how the evolution of terahertz systems design will continue toward enabling efficient terahertz communications and sensing solutions as an integral part of next-generation wireless systems.

Exploring Key Factors for Long-Term Vessel Incident Risk Prediction

Factor analysis acts a pivotal role in enhancing maritime safety. Most previous studies conduct factor analysis within the framework of incident-related label prediction, where the developed models can be categorized into short-term and long-term prediction models. The long-term models offer a more strategic approach, enabling more proactive risk management, compared to the short-term ones. Nevertheless, few studies have devoted to rigorously identifying the key factors for the long-term prediction and undertaking comprehensive factor analysis. Hence, this study aims to delve into the key factors for predicting the incident risk levels in the subsequent year given a specific datestamp. The majority of candidate factors potentially contributing to the incident risk are collected from vessels' historical safety performance data spanning up to five years. An improved embedded feature selection, which integrates Random Forest classifier with a feature filtering process is proposed to identify key risk-contributing factors from the candidate pool. The results demonstrate superior performance of the proposed method in incident prediction and factor interpretability. Comprehensive analysis is conducted upon the key factors, which could help maritime stakeholders formulate management strategies for incident prevenion.

Electronic States in One-Dimensional Helical Crystals: General Properties and Application to InSeI

In this article, we systematically explore several key properties of electronic states in helical materials systems, including the inheritance of orbital angular momentum (OAM) from local atomic orbitals to the entire helical structure, the conservation of helical momentum, and the emergence of helical-induced spin-orbit coupling (hSOC). We then apply this comprehensive theoretical framework to elucidate the electronic structure of one-dimensional (1D) helical crystal InSeI. Our analysis reveals the influence of hSOC, evident in spin-mixing energy gaps within the electronic band structure, as calculated through density functional theory. Utilizing a combination of tight-binding modeling and first-principles calculations, we ascertain the spin-polarized electric response and the chiral-switchable second-order photocurrent response of InSeI, characterized as the Landauer-Buttiker ballistic transport and shift current response. The results highlight the potential of 1D InSeI for applications in spintronics and optoelectronics. The overarching theoretical framework established in this work will prove invaluable for the investigation of other helical electronic systems.

One-dimensional Multiferroic Semiconductor WOI3: Unconventional Anisotropic d^1 Rule and Bulk Photovoltaic Effect

The pursuit of multiferroic magnetoelectrics, combining simultaneous ferroelectric and magnetic orders, remains a central focus in condensed matter physics. Here we report the centrosymmetric, one-dimensional (1D) antiferromagnetic WOI$_3$ undergoes a strain-induced ferroelectric distortion. The paraelectric-ferroelectric transition is originated from the unconventional anisotropic $d^1$ mechanism, where an unpaired d electron of each W$^{5+}$ ion contributes to magnetic orders. Employing a Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we predict an antiferromagnetic spin configuration as the paraelectric ground state, transitioning to a ferroelectric phase with noncollinear spin arrangement under uniaxial strain. The ferroelectric polarization and noncollinear spin arrangement can be manipulated by varying the applied strain. While the energy barriers for switching ferroelectric polarizations with magnetic orders are on the order of a few dozen of meV, the shift current bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) exhibits remarkable differences, providing a precise and valuable tool for experimentally probing the interplay of ferroelectric and magnetic orders in 1D WOI$_3$.

SMiLE: Schema-augmented Multi-level Contrastive Learning for Knowledge Graph Link Prediction

Link prediction is the task of inferring missing links between entities in knowledge graphs. Embedding-based methods have shown effectiveness in addressing this problem by modeling relational patterns in triples. However, the link prediction task often requires contextual information in entity neighborhoods, while most existing embedding-based methods fail to capture it. Additionally, little attention is paid to the diversity of entity representations in different contexts, which often leads to false prediction results. In this situation, we consider that the schema of knowledge graph contains the specific contextual information, and it is beneficial for preserving the consistency of entities across contexts. In this paper, we propose a novel Schema-augmented Multi-level contrastive LEarning framework (SMiLE) to conduct knowledge graph link prediction. Specifically, we first exploit network schema as the prior constraint to sample negatives and pre-train our model by employing a multi-level contrastive learning method to yield both prior schema and contextual information. Then we fine-tune our model under the supervision of individual triples to learn subtler representations for link prediction. Extensive experimental results on four knowledge graph datasets with thorough analysis of each component demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework against state-of-the-art baselines. The implementation of SMiLE is available at https://github.com/GKNL/SMiLE.

Switchable band topology and geometric current in sliding bilayer elemental ferroelectric

We demonstrate that sliding motion between two layers of the newly discovered ferroelectric and topologically trivial bismuth (Bi) monolayer [Nature 617, 67 (2023)] can induce a sequence of topological phase transitions, alternating between trivial and nontrivial states. Interestingly, a lateral shift, even when preserving spatial symmetry, can still switch the quantum spin Hall state on and off. The substantial band-gap modulation and band inversion due to interlayer sliding arise primarily from the intralayer in-plane charge transfer processes involving Bi atoms at the outermost atomic layers, rather than the interlayer charge redistribution. We map out the topological phase diagram and the geometric Berry curvature-dipole induced nonlinear anomalous Hall response resulting from sliding, highlighting the potential for robust mechanical control over the edge current and the Hall current. Bilayer configurations that are $\mathbb{Z}_2$ nontrivial can produce drastically different transverse currents orthogonal to the external electric field. This occurs because both the direction and magnitude of the Berry curvature dipole at the Fermi level depend sensitively on the sliding displacement. Our results suggest that bilayer bismuth could serve as a platform to realize power-efficient ``Berry slidetronics" for topology memory applications.

DP-HyPO: An Adaptive Private Hyperparameter Optimization Framework

Hyperparameter optimization, also known as hyperparameter tuning, is a widely recognized technique for improving model performance. Regrettably, when training private ML models, many practitioners often overlook the privacy risks associated with hyperparameter optimization, which could potentially expose sensitive information about the underlying dataset. Currently, the sole existing approach to allow privacy-preserving hyperparameter optimization is to uniformly and randomly select hyperparameters for a number of runs, subsequently reporting the best-performing hyperparameter. In contrast, in non-private settings, practitioners commonly utilize ``adaptive'' hyperparameter optimization methods such as Gaussian process-based optimization, which select the next candidate based on information gathered from previous outputs. This substantial contrast between private and non-private hyperparameter optimization underscores a critical concern. In our paper, we introduce DP-HyPO, a pioneering framework for ``adaptive'' private hyperparameter optimization, aiming to bridge the gap between private and non-private hyperparameter optimization. To accomplish this, we provide a comprehensive differential privacy analysis of our framework. Furthermore, we empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of DP-HyPO on a diverse set of real-world datasets.

Some characterizations of BMO and Lipschitz spaces in the Schrödinger setting

We consider the Schrödinger operator $\mathcal{L}=-Δ+V$ on $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq3$, where the nonnegative potential $V$ belongs to the reverse Hölder class $RH_s$ for some $s\geq d/2$. A real-valued function $f\in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d)$ belongs to the (BMO) space $\mathrm{BMO}_{ρ,θ}(\mathbb R^d)$ with $0<θ<\infty$ if \begin{equation*} \|f\|_{\mathrm{BMO}_{ρ,θ}} :=\sup_{B(x_0,r)}\bigg(1+\frac{r}{ρ(x_0)}\bigg)^{-θ}\bigg(\frac{1}{|B(x_0,r)|}\int_{B(x_0,r)}\big|f(x)-f_{B}\big|\,dx\bigg), \end{equation*} where the supremum is taken over all balls $B(x_0,r)\subset\mathbb R^d$, $ρ(\cdot)$ is the critical radius function in the Schrödinger context and \begin{equation*} f_{B}:=\frac{1}{|B(x_0,r)|}\int_{B(x_0,r)}f(y)\,dy. \end{equation*} A real-valued function $f\in L^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb R^d)$ belongs to the (Lipschitz) space $\mathrm{Lip}_β^{ρ,θ}(\mathbb R^d)$ with $0<β<1$ and $0<θ<\infty$ if \begin{equation*} \|f\|_{\mathrm{Lip}_β^{ρ,θ}} :=\sup_{B(x_0,r)}\bigg(1+\frac{r}{ρ(x_0)}\bigg)^{-θ} \bigg(\frac{1}{|B(x_0,r)|^{1+β/d}}\int_{B(x_0,r)}\big|f(x)-f_{B}\big|\,dx\bigg). \end{equation*} It can be easily seen that $\mathrm{BMO}_{ρ,θ}(\mathbb R^d)$ (or $\mathrm{Lip}_β^{ρ,θ}(\mathbb R^d)$) is a function space which is larger than the classical BMO (or Lipschitz) space. In this paper, we give some new characterizations of BMO and Lipschitz spaces associated with the Schrödinger operator $\mathcal{L}$. We extend some previous works of Bongioanni--Harboure--Salinas and Liu--Sheng to the weighted case. The classes of weights considered here are larger than the classical Muckenhoupt classes.

Time-Division Based Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computing in Integrated Satellite-Terrestrial Networks

In this paper, we investigate time-division based framework for integrated sensing, communication, and computing in integrated satellite-terrestrial networks. We consider a scenario, where Internet-of-Things devices on the ground operate with sensing and communication in a time-division manner, and can process the sensing results locally, at the edge, or in the cloud via the satellite communication link. Based on the proposed framework, we formulate a multi-dimensional optimization problem to maximize the utility performance of sensing, communication, and computing abilities. After decomposing the original optimization problem into two subproblems, we first derive the closed-form solution of the optimal task partitioning strategy for terrestrial users and satellite users. Then, we develop the joint subframe allocation and task partitioning strategy to optimize the overall performance, by means of which the Pareto optimal solutions can be obtained along the Pareto frontier. Extensive simulations are provided to demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, which is 10% to 60% superior compared with the benchmarks. Also, the trade-off between the multidimensional resource and multi-functional performance is analyzed from the perspective of network design.

Sensing User's Activity, Channel, and Location with Near-Field Extra-Large-Scale MIMO

This paper proposes a grant-free massive access scheme based on the millimeter wave (mmWave) extra-large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) to support massive Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices with low latency, high data rate, and high localization accuracy in the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) networks. The XL-MIMO consists of multiple antenna subarrays that are widely spaced over the service area to ensure line-of-sight (LoS) transmissions. First, we establish the XL-MIMO-based massive access model considering the near-field spatial non-stationary (SNS) property. Then, by exploiting the block sparsity of subarrays and the SNS property, we propose a structured block orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm for efficient active user detection (AUD) and channel estimation (CE). Furthermore, different sensing matrices are applied in different pilot subcarriers for exploiting the diversity gains. Additionally, a multi-subarray collaborative localization algorithm is designed for localization. In particular, the angle of arrival (AoA) and time difference of arrival (TDoA) of the LoS links between active users and related subarrays are extracted from the estimated XL-MIMO channels, and then the coordinates of active users are acquired by jointly utilizing the AoAs and TDoAs. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms outperform existing algorithms in terms of AUD and CE performance and can achieve centimeter-level localization accuracy.

Ferroelastic twin wall mediated ferro-flexoelectricity and bulk photovoltaic effect in SrTiO$_3$

Ferroelastic twin walls in nonpolar materials can give rise to a spontaneous polarization due to symmetry breaking. Nevertheless, the bi-stable polarity of twin walls and its reversal have not yet been demonstrated. Here, we report that the polarity of SrTiO$_3$ twin walls can be switched by ultra-low strain gradient. Using first-principles-based machine-learning potential, we demonstrate that the twin walls can be deterministically rotated and realigned in specific directions under strain gradient, which breaks the inversion symmetry of a sequence of walls and leads to a macroscopic polarization. The system can maintain polarity even after the strain gradient is removed. As a result, the polarization of twin walls can exhibit ferroelectric-like hysteresis loop upon cyclic bending, namely ferro-flexoelectricity. Finally, we propose a scheme to experimentally detect the polarity of twin wall by measuring the bulk photovoltaic responses. Our findings suggest a twin-wall-mediated ferro-flexoelectricity in SrTiO$_3$, which could be potentially exploited as functional elements in nano-electronic devices design.
