Scintillation Properties and Electronic Structure of Intrinsic and Extrinsic Mixed Elpasolites Cs2NaRBr3I3 (R = La, Y)

Scintillators attract wide research interest for their distinct applications in radiation detection. Elpasolite halides are among the most promising scintillators due to their high structural symmetry and good scintillation performance. Better understanding of their underlying scintillation mechanism opens up new possibilities in scintillator development. In this work, we employ a variety of experimental techniques to study the two mixed-anion elpasolites Cs2NaRBr3I3 (R = La, Y). The emission of intrinsic Cs2NaRBr3I3 with a light yield ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 ph/MeV is dominant by self-trapped exciton emission. Partial substitution of R with Ce introduces a competing emission, the Ce3+ 5d to 4f radiative transition. Ab initio calculations were performed to investigate the electronic structures as well as the binding energies of polarons in Cs2NaRBr6. The calculated large self-trapped exciton binding energies are consistent with the observed high light yield due to self-trapped exciton emission. The unique electronic structure of halide elpasolites as calculated enhances the STE stability and the STE emission. The highly tunable scintillation properties of mixed-anion elpasolites underscore the role of their complex scintillation mechanism. Our study provides guidance for the design of new elpasolites scintillators with exceptional energy resolution and light yield desirable for applications.

Fano resonance assisting plasmonic circular dichroism from nanorice heterodimers for extrinsic chirality

In this work, the circular dichroisms (CD) of nanorice heterodimers consisting of two parallel arranged nanorices with the same size but different materials are investigated theoretically. Symmetry-breaking is introduced by using different materials and oblique incidence to achieve strong CD at the vicinity of Fano resonance peaks. We demonstrate that all Au-Ag heterodimers exhibit multipolar Fano resonances and strong CD effect. A simple quantitative analysis shows that the structure with larger Fano asymmetry factor has stronger CD. The intensity and peak positions of the CD effect can be flexibly tuned in a large range by changing particle size, shape, the inter-particle distance and surroundings. Furthermore, CD spectra exhibit high sensitivity to ambient medium in visible and near infrared regions. Our results here are beneficial for the design and application of high sensitive CD sensors and other related fields.

Quantum information processing architecture with endohedral fullerenes in a carbon nanotube

A potential quantum information processor is proposed using a fullerene peapod, i.e., an array of the endohedral fullerenes 15N@C60 or 31P@C60 contained in a single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT). The qubits are encoded in the nuclear spins of the doped atoms, while the electronic spins are used for initialization and readout, as well as for two-qubit operations.

Implementation of many-qubit Grover search with trapped ultracold ions

We propose a potentially practical scheme for realization of an n-qubit (n>2) conditional phase flip (CPF) gate and implementation of Grover search algorithm in the ion-trap system. We demonstrate both analytically and numerically that, our scheme could be achieved efficiently to find a marked state with high fidelity and high success probability. We also show the merits of the proposal that the increase of the ion number can improve the fidelity and the success probability of the CPF gate. The required operations for Grover search are very close to the capabilities of current ion-trap techniques.

Sudden death, birth and stable entanglement in a two-qubit Heisenberg XY spin chain

Taking the decoherence effect due to population relaxation into account, we investigate the entanglement properties for two qubits in the Heisenberg XY interaction and subject to an external magnetic field. It is found that the phenomenon of entanglement sudden death (ESD) as well as sudden birth(ESB) appear during the evolution process for particular initial states. The influence of the external magnetic field and the spin environment on ESD and ESB are addressed in detail. It is shown that the concurrence, a measure of entanglement, can be controlled by tuning the parameters of the spin chain, such as the anisotropic parameter, external magnetic field, and the coupling strength with their environment. In particular, we find that a critical anisotropy constant exists, above which ESB vanishes while ESD appears. It is also notable that stable entanglement, which is independent of different initial states of the qubits, occurs even in the presence of decoherence.

Many-qubit network employing cavity QED in a decoherence-free subspace

We propose a many-qubit network with cavity QED by encoding qubits in decoherence-free subspace, based on which we can implement many-logic-qubit conditional gates by means of cavity assisted interaction with single-photon pulses. Our scheme could not only resist collective dephasing errors, but also much reduce the implementational steps compared to conventional methods doing the same job, and we can also complete communications between two arbitrary nodes. We show the details by implementing a three-logic-qubit Toffoli gate, and explore the experimental feasibility and challenge based on currently achievable cavity QED technologies.

Transfer and teleportation of quantum states encoded in decoherence-free subspace

Quantum state transfer and teleportation, with qubits encoded in internal states of the atoms in cavities, among spatially separated nodes of a quantum network in decoherence-free subspace are proposed, based on a cavity-assisted interaction by single-photon pulses. We show in details the implementation of a logic-qubit Hadamard gate and a two-logic-qubit conditional gate, and discuss the experimental feasibility of our scheme.

Deformed Two-Mode Quadrature Operators in Noncommutative Space

Starting from noncommutative quantum mechanics algebra, we investigate the variances of the deformed two-mode quadrature operators under the evolution of three types of two-mode squeezed states in noncommutative space. A novel conclusion can be found and it may associate the checking of the variances in noncommutative space with homodyne detecting technology. Moreover, we analyze the influence of the scaling parameter on the degree of squeezing for the deformed level and the corresponding consequences.
