A Kernel Method for Exact Tail Asymptotics --- Random Walks in the Quarter Plane

In this paper, we propose a kernel method for exact tail asymptotics of a random walk to neighborhoods in the quarter plane. This is a two-dimensional method, which does not require a determination of the unknown generating function(s). Instead, in terms of the asymptotic analysis and a Tauberian-like theorem, we show that the information about the location of the dominant singularity or singularities and the detailed asymptotic property at a dominant singularity is sufficient for the exact tail asymptotic behaviour for the marginal distributions and also for joint probabilities along a coordinate direction. We provide all details, not only for a "typical" case, the case with a single dominant singularity for an unknown generating function, but also for all non-typical cases which have not been studied before. A total of four types of exact tail asymptotics are found for the typical case, which have been reported in the literature. We also show that on the circle of convergence, an unknown generating function could have two dominant singularities instead of one, which can lead to a new periodic phenomena. Examples are illustrated by using this kernel method. This paper can be considered as a systematic summary and extension of existing ideas, which also contains new and interesting research results.

Salient Structure Detection by Context-Guided Visual Search

We define the task of salient structure (SS) detection to unify the saliency-related tasks like fixation prediction, salient object detection, and other detection of structures of interest. In this study, we propose a unified framework for SS detection by modeling the two-pathway-based guided search strategy of biological vision. Firstly, context-based spatial prior (CBSP) is extracted based on the layout of edges in the given scene along a fast visual pathway, called non-selective pathway. This is a rough and non-selective estimation of the locations where the potential SSs present. Secondly, another flow of local feature extraction is executed in parallel along the selective pathway. Finally, Bayesian inference is used to integrate local cues guided by CBSP, and to predict the exact locations of SSs in the input scene. The proposed model is invariant to size and features of objects. Experimental results on four datasets (two fixation prediction datasets and two salient object datasets) demonstrate that our system achieves competitive performance for SS detection (i.e., both the tasks of fixation prediction and salient object detection) comparing to the state-of-the-art methods.

The dichotomy structure of Y chromosome Haplogroup N

Haplogroup N-M231 of human Y chromosome is a common clade from Eastern Asia to Northern Europe, being one of the most frequent haplogroups in Altaic and Uralic-speaking populations. Using newly discovered bi-allelic markers from high-throughput DNA sequencing, we largely improved the phylogeny of Haplogroup N, in which 16 subclades could be identified by 33 SNPs. More than 400 males belonging to Haplogroup N in 34 populations in China were successfully genotyped, and populations in Northern Asia and Eastern Europe were also compared together. We found that all the N samples were typed as inside either clade N1-F1206 (including former N1a-M128, N1b-P43 and N1c-M46 clades), most of which were found in Altaic, Uralic, Russian and Chinese-speaking populations, or N2-F2930, common in Tibeto-Burman and Chinese-speaking populations. Our detailed results suggest that Haplogroup N developed in the region of China since the final stage of late Paleolithic Era.

Particle Acceleration and Plasma Dynamics during Magnetic Reconnection in the Magnetically-dominated Regime

Magnetic reconnection is thought to be the driver for many explosive phenomena in the universe. The energy release and particle acceleration during reconnection have been proposed as a mechanism for producing high-energy emissions and cosmic rays. We carry out two- and three-dimensional kinetic simulations to investigate relativistic magnetic reconnection and the associated particle acceleration. The simulations focus on electron-positron plasmas starting with a magnetically dominated, force-free current sheet ($σ\equiv B^2/(4πn_e m_e c^2) \gg 1$). For this limit, we demonstrate that relativistic reconnection is highly efficient at accelerating particles through a first-order Fermi process accomplished by the curvature drift of particles along the electric field induced by the relativistic flows. This mechanism gives rise to the formation of hard power-law spectra $f \propto (γ-1)^{-p}$ and approaches $p = 1$ for sufficiently large $σ$ and system size. Eventually most of the available magnetic free energy is converted into nonthermal particle kinetic energy. An analytic model is presented to explain the key results and predict a general condition for the formation of power-law distributions. The development of reconnection in these regimes leads to relativistic inflow and outflow speeds and enhanced reconnection rates relative to non-relativistic regimes. In the three-dimensional simulation, the interplay between secondary kink and tearing instabilities leads to strong magnetic turbulence, but does not significantly change the energy conversion, reconnection rate, or particle acceleration. This study suggests that relativistic reconnection sites are strong sources of nonthermal particles, which may have important implications to a variety of high-energy astrophysical problems.

Robust Bayesian compressive sensing with data loss recovery for structural health monitoring signals

The application of compressive sensing (CS) to structural health monitoring is an emerging research topic. The basic idea in CS is to use a specially-designed wireless sensor to sample signals that are sparse in some basis (e.g. wavelet basis) directly in a compressed form, and then to reconstruct (decompress) these signals accurately using some inversion algorithm after transmission to a central processing unit. However, most signals in structural health monitoring are only approximately sparse, i.e. only a relatively small number of the signal coefficients in some basis are significant, but the other coefficients are usually not exactly zero. In this case, perfect reconstruction from compressed measurements is not expected. A new Bayesian CS algorithm is proposed in which robust treatment of the uncertain parameters is explored, including integration over the prediction-error precision parameter to remove it as a "nuisance" parameter. The performance of the new CS algorithm is investigated using compressed data from accelerometers installed on a space-frame structure and on a cable-stayed bridge. Compared with other state-of-the-art CS methods including our previously-published Bayesian method which uses MAP (maximum a posteriori) estimation of the prediction-error precision parameter, the new algorithm shows superior performance in reconstruction robustness and posterior uncertainty quantification. Furthermore, our method can be utilized for recovery of lost data during wireless transmission, regardless of the level of sparseness in the signal.

Genetic structure of Sino-Tibetan populations revealed by forensic STR loci

The origin and diversification of Sino-Tibetan populations have been a long-standing hot debate. However, the limited genetic information of Tibetan populations keeps this topic far from clear. In the present study, we genotyped 15 forensic autosomal STRs from 803 unrelated Tibetan individuals from Gansu Province (635 from Gannan and 168 from Tianzhu). We combined these data with published dataset to infer a detailed population affinities and admixture of Sino-Tibetan populations. Our results revealed that the genetic structure of Sino-Tibetan populations was strongly correlated with linguistic affiliations. Although the among-population variances are relatively small, the genetic components for Tibetan, Lolo-Burmese, and Han Chinese were quite distinctive, especially for the Deng, Nu, and Derung of Lolo-Burmese. Southern indigenous populations, such as Tai-Kadai and Hmong-Mien populations might have made substantial genetic contribution to Han Chinese and Altaic populations, but not to Tibetans. Likewise, Han Chinese but not Tibetan shared very similar genetic makeups with Altaic populations, which did not support the North Asian origin of Tibetan populations. The dataset generated here are also valuable for forensic identification.

Polarization Swings Reveal Magnetic Energy Dissipation in Blazars

The polarization signatures of the blazar emissions are known to be highly variable. In addition to small fluctuations of the polarization angle around a mean value, sometimes large (> 180^o) polarization angle swings are observed. We suggest that such p henomena can be interpreted as arising from light-travel-time effects within an underlying axisymmetric emission region. We present the first simultaneous fitting of the multi-wavelength spectrum, variability and time-dependent polarization features of a correlated optical and gamma-ray flaring event of the prominent blazar 3C279, which was accompanied by a drastic change of its polarization signatures. This unprecedented combination of spectral, variability, and polarization information in a coherent physical model allows us to place stringent constraints on the particle acceleration and magnetic-field topology in the relativistic jet of a blazar, strongly favoring a scenario in which magnetic energy dissipation is the primary driver of the flare event.

On Nonsymmetric Nonparametric Measures of Dependence

Based on recent progress in research on copula based dependence measures, we review the original Renyi's axioms on symmetric measures and propose a new set of axioms that applies to nonsymmetric measures. We show that nonsymmetric measures can actually better characterize the relationship between a pair of random variables including both independence and complete dependence. The new measures also satisfy the Data Processing Inequality (DPI) on the * product on copulas, which leads to nice features including the invariance of dependence measure under bijective transformation on one of the random variables. The issues with symmetric measures are also clarified.

With the rapid development of the multimedia, the secure of the multimedia is get more concerned. as far as we know , Digital watermarking is an effective way to protect copyright. The watermark must be generally hidden does not affect the quality of the original image. In this paper,a novel way based on discrete cosine transform(DCT) and singular value decomposition(SVD) .In the proposed way,we decomposition the image into 8*8 blocks, next we use the DCT to get the transformed block, then we choose the diagonal to embed the information, after we do this, we recover the image and then we decomposition the image to 8*8 blocks,we use the SVD way to get the diagonal matrix and embed the information in the matrix. next we extract the information use both inverse of DCT and SVD, as we all know, after we embed the information seconded time , the information we first information we embed must be changed, we choose a measure way called Peak Signal to Noise Ratio(PSNR) to estimate the similarity of the two image, and set a threshold to ensure whether the information is same or not.

A holographic model of d-wave superconductor vortices with Lifshitz scaling

We study analytically the $d$-wave holographic superconductors with Lifshitz scaling in the presence of external magnetic field. The vortex lattice solutions of the model have also been obtained with different Lifshitz scaling. Our results imply that holographic $d$-wave superconductor is indeed a type II one even for different Lifshitz scaling. This is the same as the conventional $d$-wave superconductors in the Ginzburg-Landau theory. Our results also indicate that the dynamical exponent $z$ has no effect to the shape of the vortex lattice even after higher order corrections (away from the phase transition point $B_c$) are included. However, it has effects on the upper critical magnetic field $B_{c_2}$ through the fact that a larger $z$ results in a smaller $B_{c_2}$ and therefore influences the size (characterized by $r_0\equiv 1/\sqrt{B_{c_2}}$) of the vortex lattices. Furthermore, close comparisons between our results and those of the Ginzburg-Landau theory reveal the fact that the upper critical magnetic field $B_{c_2}$ is inversely proportional to the square of the superconducting coherence length $ξ$, regardless of the anisotropy between space and time.

Relativistic MHD simulations of collision-induced magnetic dissipation in Poynting-flux-dominated jets/outflows

We perform 3D relativistic ideal MHD simulations to study the collisions between high-$σ$ (Poynting-flux-dominated) blobs which contain both poloidal and toroidal magnetic field components. This is meant to mimic the interactions inside a highly variable Poynting-flux-dominated jet. We discover a significant electromagnetic field (EMF) energy dissipation with an Alfvénic rate with the efficiency around 35\%. Detailed analyses show that this dissipation is mostly facilitated by the collision-induced magnetic reconnection. Additional resolution and parameter studies show a robust result that the relative EMF energy dissipation efficiency is nearly independent of the numerical resolution or most physical parameters in the relevant parameter range. The reconnection outflows in our simulation can potentially form the multi-orientation relativistic mini-jets as needed for several analytical models. We also find a linear relationship between the $σ$ values before and after the major EMF energy dissipation process. Our results give support to the proposed astrophysical models that invoke significant magnetic energy dissipation in Poynting-flux-dominated jets, such as the internal collision-induced magnetic reconnection and turbulence (ICMART) model for GRBs, and reconnection triggered mini-jets model for AGNs.

Robust Bayesian compressive sensing for signals in structural health monitoring

In structural health monitoring (SHM) systems, massive amounts of data are often generated that need data compression techniques to reduce the cost of signal transfer and storage. Compressive sensing (CS) is a novel data acquisition method whereby the compression is done in a sensor simultaneously with the sampling. If the original sensed signal is sufficiently sparse in terms of some basis, the decompression can be done essentially perfectly up to some critical compression ratio. In this article, a Bayesian compressive sensing (BCS) method is investigated that uses sparse Bayesian learning to reconstruct signals from a compressive sensor. By explicitly quantifying the uncertainty in the reconstructed signal, the BCS technique exhibits an obvious benefit over existing regularized norm-minimization CS methods that provide a single signal estimate. However, current BCS algorithms suffer from a robustness problem: sometimes the reconstruction errors are very large when the number of measurements is a lot less than the number of signal degrees of freedom that are needed to capture the signal accurately in a directly sampled form. In this paper, we present improvements to the BCS reconstruction method to enhance its robustness so that even higher compression ratios can be used and we examine the tradeoff between efficiently compressing data and accurately decompressing it. Synthetic data and actual acceleration data collected from a bridge SHM system are used as examples. Compared with the state-of-the-art BCS reconstruction algorithms, the improved BCS algorithm demonstrates superior performance. With the same reconstruction error, the proposed BCS algorithm works with relatively large compression ratios and it can achieve perfect lossless compression performance with quite high compression ratios. Furthermore, the error bars for the signal reconstruction are also quantified effectively.

Faithful representations of graph algebras via branching systems

We continue to investigate branching systems of directed graphs and their connections with graph algebras. We give a sufficient condition under which the representation induced from a branching system of a directed graph is faithful and construct a large class of branching systems that satisfy this condition. We finish the paper by providing a proof of the converse of the Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for graph algebras by means of branching systems.

Worst-Case Linear Discriminant Analysis as Scalable Semidefinite Feasibility Problems

In this paper, we propose an efficient semidefinite programming (SDP) approach to worst-case linear discriminant analysis (WLDA). Compared with the traditional LDA, WLDA considers the dimensionality reduction problem from the worst-case viewpoint, which is in general more robust for classification. However, the original problem of WLDA is non-convex and difficult to optimize. In this paper, we reformulate the optimization problem of WLDA into a sequence of semidefinite feasibility problems. To efficiently solve the semidefinite feasibility problems, we design a new scalable optimization method with quasi-Newton methods and eigen-decomposition being the core components. The proposed method is orders of magnitude faster than standard interior-point based SDP solvers. Experiments on a variety of classification problems demonstrate that our approach achieves better performance than standard LDA. Our method is also much faster and more scalable than standard interior-point SDP solvers based WLDA. The computational complexity for an SDP with $m$ constraints and matrices of size $d$ by $d$ is roughly reduced from $\mathcal{O}(m^3+md^3+m^2d^2)$ to $\mathcal{O}(d^3)$ ($m>d$ in our case).

Migration and Growth of Protoplanetary Embryos I: Convergence of Embryos in Protoplanetary Disks

According to the core-accretion scenario, planets form in protostellar disks through the condensation of dust, coagulation of planetesimals, and emergence of protoplanetary embryos. At a few AU in a minimum mass nebula, embryos' growth is quenched by dynamical isolation due to the depletion of planetesimals in their feeding zone. However, embryos with masses ($M_p$) in the range of a few Earth masses ($M_\oplus$) migrate toward a transition radius between the inner viscously heated and outer irradiated regions of their natal disk. Their limiting isolation mass increases with the planetesimals surface density. When $M_p > 10 M_\oplus$, embryos efficiently accrete gas and evolve into cores of gas giants. We use numerical simulation to show that, despite streamline interference, convergent embryos essentially retain the strength of non-interacting embryos' Lindblad and corotation torque by their natal disks. In disks with modest surface density (or equivalently accretion rates), embryos capture each other in their mutual mean motion resonances and form a convoy of super Earths. In more massive disks, they could overcome these resonant barriers to undergo repeated close encounters including cohesive collisions which enable the formation of massive cores.

Modeling the Formation of Globular Cluster Systems in the Virgo Cluster

The mass distribution and chemical composition of globular cluster (GC) systems preserve fossil record of the early stages of galaxy formation. The observed distribution of GC colors within massive early-type galaxies in the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey (ACSVCS) reveals a multi-modal shape, which likely corresponds to a multi-modal metallicity distribution. We present a simple model for the formation and disruption of GCs that aims to match the ACSVCS data. This model tests the hypothesis that GCs are formed during major mergers of gas-rich galaxies and inherit the metallicity of their hosts. To trace merger events, we use halo merger trees extracted from a large cosmological N-body simulation. We select 20 halos in the mass range of $2\times 10^{12}$ to $7\times 10^{13}M_\odot$ and match them to 19 Virgo galaxies with K-band luminosity between $3\times 10^{10}$ and $3\times 10^{11}L_\odot$. To set the [Fe/H] abundances, we use an empirical galaxy mass-metallicity relation. We find that a minimal merger ratio of 1:3 best matches the observed cluster metallicity distribution. A characteristic bimodal shape appears because metal-rich GCs are produced by late mergers between massive halos, while metal-poor GCs are produced by collective merger activities of less massive hosts at early times. The model outcome is robust to alternative prescriptions for cluster formation rate throughout cosmic time, but a gradual evolution of the mass-metallicity relation with redshift appears to be necessary to match the observed cluster metallicities. We also affirm the age-metallicity relation, predicted by an earlier model, in which metal-rich clusters are systematically several billion years younger than their metal-poor counterparts.

Long-term Optical Observations of the Be/X-ray Binary X Per

We present the optical spectroscopic observations of X Per from 1999 to 2013 with the 2.16m telescope at Xinglong Station and the 2.4m telescope at Lijiang station, National Astronomical Observatories of China. Combining with the public optical photometric data, we find certain epochs of anti-correlations between the optical brightness and the intensity of the Hα and HeI 6678 lines, which may be attributed to the mass ejections from the Be star. Alternative explanations are however also possible. The variability of FeII 6317 line in the spectra of X Per might be also caused by the shocked waves formed after the mass ejections from the Be star. The X-ray activities of the system might also be connected with the mass ejection events from the Be star. When the ejected materials were transported from the surface of the Be star to the orbit of neutron star, an X-ray flare could be observed in its X-ray light curves. We use the neutron star as a probe to constrain the motion of the ejected material in the circumstellar disk. With the diffusion time of the ejected material from the surface of Be star to the orbit of neutron star, the viscosity parameter α of the circumstellar disk is estimated to be 0.39 and 0.28 for the different time, indicating that the disk around Be star may be truncated by the neutron star at the 2:1 resonance radius and Type I X-ray outburst is unlikely to be observed in X Per.

KCRC-LCD: Discriminative Kernel Collaborative Representation with Locality Constrained Dictionary for Visual Categorization

We consider the image classification problem via kernel collaborative representation classification with locality constrained dictionary (KCRC-LCD). Specifically, we propose a kernel collaborative representation classification (KCRC) approach in which kernel method is used to improve the discrimination ability of collaborative representation classification (CRC). We then measure the similarities between the query and atoms in the global dictionary in order to construct a locality constrained dictionary (LCD) for KCRC. In addition, we discuss several similarity measure approaches in LCD and further present a simple yet effective unified similarity measure whose superiority is validated in experiments. There are several appealing aspects associated with LCD. First, LCD can be nicely incorporated under the framework of KCRC. The LCD similarity measure can be kernelized under KCRC, which theoretically links CRC and LCD under the kernel method. Second, KCRC-LCD becomes more scalable to both the training set size and the feature dimension. Example shows that KCRC is able to perfectly classify data with certain distribution, while conventional CRC fails completely. Comprehensive experiments on many public datasets also show that KCRC-LCD is a robust discriminative classifier with both excellent performance and good scalability, being comparable or outperforming many other state-of-the-art approaches.
