Secure Network Coding Against the Contamination and Eavesdropping Adversaries

In this paper, we propose an algorithm that targets contamination and eavesdropping adversaries. We consider the case when the number of independent packets available to the eavesdropper is less than the multicast capacity of the network. By means of our algorithm every node can verify the integrity of the received packets easily and an eavesdropper is unable to get any meaningful information about the source. We call it practical security if an eavesdropper is unable to get any meaningful information about the source. We show that, by giving up a small amount of overall capacity, our algorithm achieves achieves the practically secure condition at a probability of one. Furthermore, the communication overhead of our algorithm are negligible compared with previous works, since the transmission of the hash values and the code coefficients are both avoided.

Ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulation of magnetic bubble expansion as a model for extragalactic radio lobes

Nonlinear ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the propagation and expansion of a magnetic "bubble" plasma into a lower density, weakly-magnetized background plasma are presented. These simulations mimic the geometry and parameters of the Plasma Bubble Expansion Experiment (PBEX) [A. G. Lynn, Y. Zhang, S. C. Hsu, H. Li, W. Liu, M. Gilmore, and C. Watts, Bull. Amer. Phys. Soc. {\bf 52}, 53 (2007)], which is studying magnetic bubble expansion as a model for extra-galactic radio lobes. The simulations predict several key features of the bubble evolution. First, the direction of bubble expansion depends on the ratio of the bubble toroidal to poloidal magnetic field, with a higher ratio leading to expansion predominantly in the direction of propagation and a lower ratio leading to expansion predominantly normal to the direction of propagation. Second, an MHD shock and a trailing slow-mode compressible MHD wavefront are formed ahead of the bubble as it propagates into the background plasma. Third, the bubble expansion and propagation develop asymmetries about its propagation axis due to reconnection facilitated by numerical resistivity and to inhomogeneous angular momentum transport mainly due to the background magnetic field. These results will help guide the initial experiments and diagnostic measurements on PBEX.

A cosmological AMR MHD module for Enzo

Magnetic fields play an important role in almost all astrophysical phenomena including star formation. But due to the difficulty in analytic modeling and observation, magnetic fields are still poorly studied and numerical simulation has become a major tool. We have implemented a cosmological magnetohydrodynamics package for Enzo which is an AMR hydrodynamics code designed to simulate structure formation. We use the TVD solver developed by S. Li as the base solver. In addition, we employ the constrained transport(CT) algorithm as described by D. Balsara. For interpolation magnetic fields to fine grids we used a divergence free quadratic reconstruction, also described by Balsara. We present results from several test problems including MHD caustics, MHD pancake and galaxy cluster formation with magnetic fields. We also discuss possible applications of our AMR MHD code to first star research.

Singular unitarity in "quantization commutes with reduction"

Let $M$ be a connected compact quantizable Kähler manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian action of a connected compact Lie group $G$. Let $M//G=ϕ^{-1}(0)/G=M_0$ be the symplectic quotient at value 0 of the moment map $ϕ$. The space $M_0$ may in general not be smooth. It is known that, as vector spaces, there is a natural isomorphism between the quantum Hilbert space over $M_0$ and the $G$-invariant subspace of the quantum Hilbert space over $M$. In this paper, without any regularity assumption on the quotient $M_0$, we discuss the relation between the inner products of these two quantum Hilbert spaces under the above natural isomorphism; we establish asymptotic unitarity to leading order in Planck's constant of a modified map of the above isomorphism under a ``metaplectic correction'' of the two quantum Hilbert spaces.

Stochastic Acceleration in the Western Hotspot of Pictor A

Chandra's high resolution observations of radio galaxies require a revisit of the relevant electron acceleration processes. Although the diffusive shock particle acceleration model may explain spectra of spatially unresolved sources, it encounters difficulties in explaining the structure and spectral properties of recently discovered Chandra X-ray features in several low-power radio sources. We argue that these observations strongly suggest stochastic electron acceleration by magnetized turbulence, and show that the simplest stochastic particle acceleration model with energy independent acceleration and escape timescales can overcome most of these difficulties. We use the bright core of the western hotspot of Pictor A as an example to demonstrate the model characteristics, which may be tested with high energy observations.

X-ray Observables of Magnetically Dominated Cavities in Clusters

We present results from magneto-hydrodynamic jet simulations in the magnetically dominated regime and find that they inflate cavities into the intracluster medium. Mock Chandra X-ray observations of our simulations show a strong resemblance to real cavities observed in X-ray images of clusters, both in terms of their morphology and thermodynamic structure. An analysis of the evolution of bubble sizes in the multi-cavity system Hydra A, as well as in a large sample of 64 cavities in 32 clusters shows that bubbles tend to expand much faster than expected in the purely adiabatic regime. Instead, we find that the bubbles follow more closely a trend predicted by our current-carrying jet models.

Observational Constraints on Agegraphic Dark Energy

In this paper, we use the Type Ia supernova data as well as the CMB and LSS data to constrain the agegraphic dark energy model recently proposed by Cai. Due to its peculiar nature, the parameter $n$ of this model cannot be well constrained by the SNIa data, while the other parameter $Ω_{m0}$ can be constrained to be $0.34\pm0.04$. When combined with CMB and LSS data, the range of $1σ$ confidence level for $n$ is greatly narrowed, albeit still very large. The best fit result is $Ω_{m0}=0.28\pm0.02$, which is consistent with most observations like WMAP and SDSS, and $n=3.4$, of which a meaningful range of confidence level can not be obtained due to the fact that the contours are not closed. Despite of this result, we conclude that for $n>1$ this model is consistent with SNIa, CMB and LSS observations. Furthermore, the fitting results indicate a generalized definition for the agegraphic dark energy.

The Nature of Linearly Polarized Millimeter and Sub-millimeter Emission in Sagittarius A*

The linearly polarized millimeter and sub-millimeter emission in Sagittarius A* is produced within 10 Schwarzschild radii of the supermassive black hole at the Galactic Center and may originate from a hot magnetized accretion disk, where electrons are heated efficiently by turbulent plasma waves. In such a scenario, the flux density and polarization are very sensitive to the electron heating rate and the inclination angle of disk, respectively, and the major axis of the sub-millimeter intrinsic polarization, which is aligned with the rotation axis of the disk, is perpendicular to the major axis of the polarized near-infrared emission. In combination with MHD simulations, which study the properties of the magnetic field and viscous stresses, the current spectral and polarization measurements give tight constraints on the model parameters. Simultaneous observations will be able to test the model.

Age constraints on the Agegraphic Dark Energy Model

We investigate the age constraint on the agegraphic dark energy model by using two old galaxies (LBDS 53W091 and LBDS 53W069) and the old high redshift quasar APM 08279+5255. We find that the agegraphic dark energy model can easily accommodate LBDS 53W091 and LBDS 53W069. To accommodate APM 08279+5255, one can take the reduced Hubble parameter as large as h=0.64, when the fraction matter energy density $Ω_{m0}\approx 0.22$.

Numerical Modeling of AGN Jets: Formation of Magnetically Dominated Lobes and Stability Properties of Current-carrying Jets

We argue the behavior of Poynting flux-dominated outflows from AGN in the galactic cluster systems by performing three-dimensional MHD simulations within the framework of the "magnetic tower" model. Of particular interests are the structure of MHD waves, the cylindrical radial force balance, the (de)collimation, and the stability properties of magnetic tower jets. Transition between the jet/lobe and the formation of wiggling jet by growing current-driven instability are discussed.

Black Hole Accretion in Low States: Electron Heating

Plasmas in an accretion flow are heated by MHD turbulence generated through the magneto-rotational instability. The viscous stress driving the accretion is intimately connected to the microscopic processes of turbulence dissipation. We show that, in a few well-observed black hole accretion systems, there is compelling observational evidence of efficient electron heating by turbulence or collective plasma effects in low accretion states, when Coulomb collisions are not efficient enough to establish a thermal equilibrium between electrons and ions at small radii. However, charged particles reach a thermal equilibrium with their kind much faster than with others through Coulomb collisions, a two-temperature accretion flow is expected. We consider a Keplerian accretion flow with a constant mass accretion rate in the pseudo-Newtonian gravitational potential and take into account the bremsstrahlung, synchrotron, and inverse Comptonization cooling processes. The critical mass accretion rate, below which the two-temperature solution may exist, is determined by the cooling processes and the collisional energy exchanges between electrons and ions and has very weak dependence on the collision-less heating of electrons by turbulence, which becomes more important at lower accretion rates. Collision-less heating of electrons by MHD turbulence can no longer be ignored in quantitative investigations of these systems.

The fundamental group of symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian Lie group actions

Let $(M, ω)$ be a connected, compact symplectic manifold equipped with a Hamiltonian $G$ action, where $G$ is a connected compact Lie group. Let $ϕ$ be the moment map. In \cite{L}, we proved the following result for $G=S^1$ action: as fundamental groups of topological spaces, $π_1(M)=π_1(M_{red})$, where $M_{red}$ is the symplectic quotient at any value of the moment map $ϕ$. In this paper, we generalize this result to other connected compact Lie group $G$ actions. We also prove that the above fundamental group is isomorphic to that of $M/G$. We briefly discuss the generalization of the first part of the results to non-compact manifolds with proper moment maps.

Evaluation of the "disorder temperature" and "free volume" formalisms via simulations of shear banding in amorphous solids

Molecular dynamics simulations of shear band development over 1000% strain in simple shear are used to test whether the local plastic strain rate is proportional to exp(-1/chi), where chi is a dimensionless quantity related to the "disorder temperature" or "free volume" that characterizes the structural state of the glass. Scaling is observed under the assumption that chi is linearly related to the local potential energy per atom. This analysis permits the extraction of the potential energy per atom at which chi=0 and the approximate energy needed to create a shear transformation zone.

CosmoMHD: A Cosmological Magnetohydrodynamics Code

In this era of precision cosmology, a detailed physical understanding on the evolution of cosmic baryons is required. Cosmic magnetic fields, though still poorly understood, may represent an important component in the global cosmic energy flow that affects the baryon dynamics. We have developed an Eulerian-based cosmological magnetohydrodynamics code (CosmoMHD) with modern shock capturing schemes to study the formation and evolution of cosmic structures in the presence of magnetic fields. The code solves the ideal MHD equations as well as the non-equilibrium rate equations for multiple species, the Vlasov equation for dynamics of collisionless particles, the Poisson's equation for the gravitational potential field and the equation for the evolution of the intergalactic ionizing radiation field. In addition, a detailed star formation prescription and feedback processes are implemented. Several methods for solving the MHD by high-resolution schemes with finite-volume and finite-difference methods are implemented. The divergence-free condition of the magnetic fields is preserved at a level of computer roundoff error via the constraint transport method. We have also implemented a high-resolution method via dual-equation formulations to track the thermal energy accurately in very high Mach number or high Alfven-Mach number regions. Several numerical tests have demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed schemes.

Stability Properties of Magnetic Tower Jets

Stability properties of ``magnetic tower'' jets propagating in the gravitationally stratified background have been examined by performing three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The current-carrying, Poynting flux-dominated magnetic tower jet, which possesses a highly wound helical magnetic field, is subject to the current-driven instability (CDI). We find that, under general physical conditions including small perturbations in the initial background profiles, the propagating magnetic tower jets develop the non-axisymmetric, $m=1$ kink mode of the CDI. The kink mode grows on the local Alfvén crossing time scale. In addition, two types of kink modes appear in the system. At the central region where external thermal pressure confinement is strong, only the internal kink mode is excited and will grow. A large distance away from the central region where the external thermal pressure becomes low, the external kink mode is observed. As a result, the exterior of magnetic tower jets will be deformed into a large-scale wiggled structure. We also discuss extensively the different physical processes that contribute to the overall stability properties of the magnetic tower jets. Specifically, when the jet propagates in an initially unperturbed background, we find that they can survive the kink mode beyond the point predicted by the well-known Kruskal-Shafranov (K-S) criterion. The stabilization in this case comes mainly from the dynamical relaxation of magnetic twists during the propagation of magnetic towers; the magnetic pitch is reduced and the corresponding K-S critical wavelength becomes longer as the tower jet proceeds. Furthermore, we show that the pressure-driven and Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities do not occur in the magnetic tower jets.

Structure of Magnetic Tower Jets in Stratified Atmospheres

Based on a new approach on modeling the magnetically dominated outflows from AGNs (Li et al. 2006), we study the propagation of magnetic tower jets in gravitationally stratified atmospheres (such as a galaxy cluster environment) in large scales ($>$ tens of kpc) by performing three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. We present the detailed analysis of the MHD waves, the cylindrical radial force balance, and the collimation of magnetic tower jets. As magnetic energy is injected into a small central volume over a finite amount of time, the magnetic fields expand down the background density gradient, forming a collimated jet and an expanded ``lobe'' due to the gradually decreasing background density and pressure. Both the jet and lobes are magnetically dominated. In addition, the injection and expansion produce a hydrodynamic shock wave that is moving ahead of and enclosing the magnetic tower jet. This shock can eventually break the hydrostatic equilibrium in the ambient medium and cause a global gravitational contraction. This contraction produces a strong compression at the head of the magnetic tower front and helps to collimate radially to produce a slender-shaped jet. At the outer edge of the jet, the magnetic pressure is balanced by the background (modified) gas pressure, without any significant contribution from the hoop stress. On the other hand, along the central axis of the jet, hoop stress is the dominant force in shaping the central collimation of the poloidal current. The system, which possesses a highly wound helical magnetic configuration, never quite reaches a force-free equilibrium state though the evolution becomes much slower at late stages. The simulations were performed without any initial perturbations so the overall structures of the jet remain mostly axisymmetric.

Collapsars in Three Dimensions

We present the results of 3-dimensional simulations of the direct collapse to a black hole of a rotating, 60-solar-mass, zero metallicity, population III star. Because the structure of this star (angular momentum, density and temperature profiles) is similar to many collapsar gamma-ray burst progenitors, these calculations have implications beyond the fate of population III stars. These simulations provide a first 3-dimensional look at a realistic collapsar progenitor, and the results are very different from any previous 2-dimensional calculations. If the angular momentum of the progenitor is high, non-axisymmetric instabilities in the collapsing core cause spiral structures to form, and these structures shape later outflows. These outflows are driven by the imbalance between viscous heating and inefficient neutrino cooling and ultimately develop into a 1e52 erg explosion. Without magnetic fields, this collapse will not produce relativistic jets, but the explosion is indeed a hypernova. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of such calculations on the explosions, nucleosynthesis, neutrino flux and gravitational wave emission from the collapse of massive stars.

Modeling the Large Scale Structures of Astrophysical Jets in the Magnetically Dominated Limit

We suggest a new approach that could be used for modeling both the large scale behavior of astrophysical jets and the magnetically dominated explosions in astrophysics. We describe a method for modeling the injection of magnetic fields and their subsequent evolution in a regime where the free energy is magnetically dominated. The injected magnetic fields, along with their associated currents, have both poloidal and toroidal components, and they are not force free. The dynamic expansion driven by the Lorentz force of the injected fields is studied using 3-dimensional ideal magnetohydrodynamic simulations. The generic behavior of magnetic field expansion, the interactions with the background medium, and the dependence on various parameters are investigated.
