Extending Ambient Pressure X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy to Plasma Studies: A novel and flexible plasma gun approach

The characterization of the electronic structure and chemical states of gases, solids, and liquids can be effectively performed using ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). However, the acquisition of electronic and chemical information under plasma conditions poses significant challenges. In this study, we have developed an advanced experimental system capable of garnering electronic information amidst plasma environments, alongside providing detailed surface chemical states of samples subjected to plasma conditions. By designing a customized plasma generation apparatus, we successfully integrated it with a traditional AP-XPS system. This novel plasma-AP-XPS system confined plasma proximal to the sample area, with adjustable intensity parameters controlled by either modifying the distance between the plasma source and the sample surface or adjusting the voltage applied. This configuration permitted the direct detection of electrons in the plasma via the XPS electron detector. To substantiate the efficacy and versatility of this setup, it was applied to two distinct studies: the plasma etching of graphene and plasma oxidation of platinum (Pt). The investigations confirmed that argon (Ar) plasma facilitates the etching of graphene, a phenomenon clearly evidenced by the XPS spectra. Similarly, the exposure of the Pt surface to oxygen plasma was found to induce effective oxidation. This developed system significantly extends the utility of AP-XPS, enhancing its application for in-depth studies of plasma-enhanced reactions under operando conditions, thereby holding promise for the advancement in material science and chemical engineering fields.

VALL-T: Decoder-Only Generative Transducer for Robust and Decoding-Controllable Text-to-Speech

Recent TTS models with decoder-only Transformer architecture, such as SPEAR-TTS and VALL-E, achieve impressive naturalness and demonstrate the ability for zero-shot adaptation given a speech prompt. However, such decoder-only TTS models lack monotonic alignment constraints, sometimes leading to hallucination issues such as mispronunciation, word skipping and repeating. To address this limitation, we propose VALL-T, a generative Transducer model that introduces shifting relative position embeddings for input phoneme sequence, explicitly indicating the monotonic generation process while maintaining the architecture of decoder-only Transformer. Consequently, VALL-T retains the capability of prompt-based zero-shot adaptation and demonstrates better robustness against hallucinations with a relative reduction of 28.3% in the word error rate.

Coordinated Energy-Trajectory Economic Model Predictive Control for Autonomous Surface Vehicles under Disturbances

The paper proposes a novel Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) scheme for Autonomous Surface Vehicles (ASVs) to simultaneously address path following accuracy and energy constraints under environmental disturbances. By formulating lateral deviations as energy-equivalent penalties in the cost function, our method enables explicit trade-offs between tracking precision and energy consumption. Furthermore, a motion-dependent decomposition technique is proposed to estimate terminal energy costs based on vehicle dynamics. Compared with the existing EMPC method, simulations with real-world ocean disturbance data demonstrate the controller's energy consumption with a 0.06 energy increase while reducing cross-track errors by up to 18.61. Field experiments conducted on an ASV equipped with an Intel N100 CPU in natural lake environments validate practical feasibility, achieving 0.22 m average cross-track error at nearly 1 m/s and 10 Hz control frequency. The proposed scheme provides a computationally tractable solution for ASVs operating under resource constraints.

Realization of a Dirac-vortex topological photonic crystal fiber

Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) that trap and guide light using photonic bandgaps have revolutionized modern optics with enormous scientific innovations and technological applications spanning many disciplines. Recently, inspired by the discovery of topological phases of matter, Dirac-vortex topological PCFs have been theoretically proposed with intriguing topological properties and unprecedented opportunities in optical fiber communications. However, due to the substantial challenges of fabrication and characterization, experimental demonstration of Dirac-vortex topological PCFs has thus far remained elusive. Here, we report the experimental realization of a Dirac-vortex topological PCF using the standard stack-and-draw fabrication process with silica glass capillaries. Moreover, we experimentally observe that Dirac-vortex single-polarization single-mode bounds to and propagates along the fiber core in the full communication window (1260-1675nm). Our study pushes the research frontier of PCFs and provides a new avenue to enhance their performance and functionality further.

Geometry-Constrained Monocular Scale Estimation Using Semantic Segmentation for Dynamic Scenes

Monocular visual localization plays a pivotal role in advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving by estimating a vehicle's ego-motion from a single pinhole camera. Nevertheless, conventional monocular visual odometry encoun-ters challenges in scale estimation due to the absence of depth information during projection. Previous methodologies, whether rooted in physical constraints or deep learning paradigms, con-tend with issues related to computational complexity and the management of dynamic objects. This study extends our prior research, presenting innovative strategies for ego-motion estima-tion and the selection of ground points. Striving for a nuanced equilibrium between computational efficiency and precision, we propose a hybrid method that leverages the SegNeXt model for real-time applications, encompassing both ego-motion estimation and ground point selection. Our methodology incorporates dy-namic object masks to eliminate unstable features and employs ground plane masks for meticulous triangulation. Furthermore, we exploit Geometry-constraint to delineate road regions for scale recovery. The integration of this approach with the mo-nocular version of ORB-SLAM3 culminates in the accurate esti-mation of a road model, a pivotal component in our scale recov-ery process. Rigorous experiments, conducted on the KITTI da-taset, systematically compare our method with existing monocu-lar visual odometry algorithms and contemporary scale recovery methodologies. The results undeniably confirm the superior ef-fectiveness of our approach, surpassing state-of-the-art visual odometry algorithms. Flexible Exoskeleton Control Based on Binding Alignment Strategy and Full-arm Coordination Mechanism

In rehabilitation, powered, and teleoperation exoskeletons, connecting the human body to the exoskeleton through binding attachments is a common configuration. However, the uncertainty of the tightness and the donning deviation of the binding attachments will affect the flexibility and comfort of the exoskeletons, especially during high-speed movement. To address this challenge, this paper presents a flexible exoskeleton control approach with binding alignment and full-arm coordination. Firstly, the sources of the force interaction caused by donning offsets are analyzed, based on which the interactive force data is classified into the major, assistant, coordination, and redundant component categories. Then, a binding alignment strategy (BAS) is proposed to reduce the donning disturbances by combining different force data. Furthermore, we propose a full-arm coordination mechanism (FCM) that focuses on two modes of arm movement intent, joint-oriented and target-oriented, to improve the flexible performance of the whole exoskeleton control during high-speed motion. In this method, we propose an algorithm to distinguish the two intentions to resolve the conflict issue of the force component. Finally, a series of experiments covering various aspects of exoskeleton performance (flexibility, adaptability, accuracy, speed, and fatigue) were conducted to demonstrate the benefits of our control framework in our full-arm exoskeleton.

Graphene-like nanoribbons connected by four-/five- membered rings on pentacene/picene precursors, Au(110) surface

The rapid development of fabrication of functional high-quality graphene-like nanoribbons has increasingly reliant on integration of diverse nanofabrication platforms. The demand for innovative techniques to enable the exploration and precise manipulation of graphene-like nanoribbons. Herein, we present an on-surface synthesis approach for graphene-like nanoribbons, achieved through the self-assembly and annealing of pentacene/picene monomers on an one-dimensional(1D) Au(110) substrate. Scanning tunneling microscope(STM) analysis reveals that the formation of four- and eight- membered rings between adjacent molecules. Furthermore, we demonstrate a technique for manipulating pentacene dimer without breaking structural integrity by STM tip manipulation. Our results exhibit a potential platform for the development of next-generation graphene-based quantum computing architectures, as well as a technique for fabricating functional graphene-like nanoribbons with exceptional precision.

MapFusion: A Novel BEV Feature Fusion Network for Multi-modal Map Construction

Map construction task plays a vital role in providing precise and comprehensive static environmental information essential for autonomous driving systems. Primary sensors include cameras and LiDAR, with configurations varying between camera-only, LiDAR-only, or camera-LiDAR fusion, based on cost-performance considerations. While fusion-based methods typically perform best, existing approaches often neglect modality interaction and rely on simple fusion strategies, which suffer from the problems of misalignment and information loss. To address these issues, we propose MapFusion, a novel multi-modal Bird's-Eye View (BEV) feature fusion method for map construction. Specifically, to solve the semantic misalignment problem between camera and LiDAR BEV features, we introduce the Cross-modal Interaction Transform (CIT) module, enabling interaction between two BEV feature spaces and enhancing feature representation through a self-attention mechanism. Additionally, we propose an effective Dual Dynamic Fusion (DDF) module to adaptively select valuable information from different modalities, which can take full advantage of the inherent information between different modalities. Moreover, MapFusion is designed to be simple and plug-and-play, easily integrated into existing pipelines. We evaluate MapFusion on two map construction tasks, including High-definition (HD) map and BEV map segmentation, to show its versatility and effectiveness. Compared with the state-of-the-art methods, MapFusion achieves 3.6% and 6.2% absolute improvements on the HD map construction and BEV map segmentation tasks on the nuScenes dataset, respectively, demonstrating the superiority of our approach.

Restore-RWKV: Efficient and Effective Medical Image Restoration with RWKV

Transformers have revolutionized medical image restoration, but the quadratic complexity still poses limitations for their application to high-resolution medical images. The recent advent of the Receptance Weighted Key Value (RWKV) model in the natural language processing field has attracted much attention due to its ability to process long sequences efficiently. To leverage its advanced design, we propose Restore-RWKV, the first RWKV-based model for medical image restoration. Since the original RWKV model is designed for 1D sequences, we make two necessary modifications for modeling spatial relations in 2D medical images. First, we present a recurrent WKV (Re-WKV) attention mechanism that captures global dependencies with linear computational complexity. Re-WKV incorporates bidirectional attention as basic for a global receptive field and recurrent attention to effectively model 2D dependencies from various scan directions. Second, we develop an omnidirectional token shift (Omni-Shift) layer that enhances local dependencies by shifting tokens from all directions and across a wide context range. These adaptations make the proposed Restore-RWKV an efficient and effective model for medical image restoration. Even a lightweight variant of Restore-RWKV, with only 1.16 million parameters, achieves comparable or even superior results compared to existing state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the resulting Restore-RWKV achieves SOTA performance across a range of medical image restoration tasks, including PET image synthesis, CT image denoising, MRI image super-resolution, and all-in-one medical image restoration. Product of Brauer--Manin obstruction for 0-cycles over number fields and function fields

It is conjectured that the Brauer--Manin obstruction is expected to control the existence of 0-cycles of degree 1 on smooth proper varieties over number fields. In this paper, we prove that the existence of Brauer--Manin obstruction to Hasse principle for 0-cycles of degree 1 on the product of smooth (non-necessarily proper) varieties is equivalent to the simultaneous existence of such an obstruction on each factor. We also prove an analogous statement for smooth varieties defined over function fields of $\mathbb{C}((t))$-curves.

Double-Flow GAN model for the reconstruction of perceived faces from brain activities

Face plays an important role in humans visual perception, and reconstructing perceived faces from brain activities is challenging because of its difficulty in extracting high-level features and maintaining consistency of multiple face attributes, such as expression, identity, gender, etc. In this study, we proposed a novel reconstruction framework, which we called Double-Flow GAN, that can enhance the capability of discriminator and handle imbalances in images from certain domains that are too easy for generators. We also designed a pretraining process that uses features extracted from images as conditions for making it possible to pretrain the conditional reconstruction model from fMRI in a larger pure image dataset. Moreover, we developed a simple pretrained model for fMRI alignment to alleviate the problem of cross-subject reconstruction due to the variations of brain structure among different subjects. We conducted experiments by using our proposed method and traditional reconstruction models. Results showed that the proposed method is significant at accurately reconstructing multiple face attributes, outperforms the previous reconstruction models, and exhibited state-of-the-art reconstruction abilities.

RuleExplorer: A Scalable Matrix Visualization for Understanding Tree Ensemble Classifiers

The high performance of tree ensemble classifiers benefits from a large set of rules, which, in turn, makes the models hard to understand. To improve interpretability, existing methods extract a subset of rules for approximation using model reduction techniques. However, by focusing on the reduced rule set, these methods often lose fidelity and ignore anomalous rules that, despite their infrequency, play crucial roles in real-world applications. This paper introduces a scalable visual analysis method to explain tree ensemble classifiers that contain tens of thousands of rules. The key idea is to address the issue of losing fidelity by adaptively organizing the rules as a hierarchy rather than reducing them. To ensure the inclusion of anomalous rules, we develop an anomaly-biased model reduction method to prioritize these rules at each hierarchical level. Synergized with this hierarchical organization of rules, we develop a matrix-based hierarchical visualization to support exploration at different levels of detail. Our quantitative experiments and case studies demonstrate how our method fosters a deeper understanding of both common and anomalous rules, thereby enhancing interpretability without sacrificing comprehensiveness.

AdaDiff: Adaptive Step Selection for Fast Diffusion Models

Diffusion models, as a type of generative model, have achieved impressive results in generating images and videos conditioned on textual conditions. However, the generation process of diffusion models involves denoising dozens of steps to produce photorealistic images/videos, which is computationally expensive. Unlike previous methods that design ``one-size-fits-all'' approaches for speed up, we argue denoising steps should be sample-specific conditioned on the richness of input texts. To this end, we introduce AdaDiff, a lightweight framework designed to learn instance-specific step usage policies, which are then used by the diffusion model for generation. AdaDiff is optimized using a policy gradient method to maximize a carefully designed reward function, balancing inference time and generation quality. We conduct experiments on three image generation and two video generation benchmarks and demonstrate that our approach achieves similar visual quality compared to the baseline using a fixed 50 denoising steps while reducing inference time by at least 33%, going as high as 40%. Furthermore, our method can be used on top of other acceleration methods to provide further speed benefits. Lastly, qualitative analysis shows that AdaDiff allocates more steps to more informative prompts and fewer steps to simpler prompts.

The nucleon properties in finite temperature and density with vector meson

We introduce the vector meson $ω$ into the Quark Meson model, and study the impact of vector interactions on the properties of static hadrons using the mean-field approximation. The short-range repulsive force associated with vector interactions leads to an expansion of the root mean square radius of nucleons. While the mass of hadrons increases, the gap between this mass and the energy of the three free constituent quarks decreases, resulting in the instability of hadrons. Our study of nucleon mass and radius at finite temperature and density has potential applications for particle yield in heavy ion collisions and the mass-radius relationship in compact stars.

HGSFusion: Radar-Camera Fusion with Hybrid Generation and Synchronization for 3D Object Detection

Millimeter-wave radar plays a vital role in 3D object detection for autonomous driving due to its all-weather and all-lighting-condition capabilities for perception. However, radar point clouds suffer from pronounced sparsity and unavoidable angle estimation errors. To address these limitations, incorporating a camera may partially help mitigate the shortcomings. Nevertheless, the direct fusion of radar and camera data can lead to negative or even opposite effects due to the lack of depth information in images and low-quality image features under adverse lighting conditions. Hence, in this paper, we present the radar-camera fusion network with Hybrid Generation and Synchronization (HGSFusion), designed to better fuse radar potentials and image features for 3D object detection. Specifically, we propose the Radar Hybrid Generation Module (RHGM), which fully considers the Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) estimation errors in radar signal processing. This module generates denser radar points through different Probability Density Functions (PDFs) with the assistance of semantic information. Meanwhile, we introduce the Dual Sync Module (DSM), comprising spatial sync and modality sync, to enhance image features with radar positional information and facilitate the fusion of distinct characteristics in different modalities. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, outperforming the state-of-the-art methods in the VoD and TJ4DRadSet datasets by $6.53\%$ and $2.03\%$ in RoI AP and BEV AP, respectively. The code is available at https://github.com/garfield-cpp/HGSFusion.

SegNet4D: Efficient Instance-Aware 4D Semantic Segmentation for LiDAR Point Cloud

4D LiDAR semantic segmentation, also referred to as multi-scan semantic segmentation, plays a crucial role in enhancing the environmental understanding capabilities of autonomous vehicles or robots. It classifies the semantic category of each LiDAR measurement point and detects whether it is dynamic, a critical ability for tasks like obstacle avoidance and autonomous navigation. Existing approaches often rely on computationally heavy 4D convolutions or recursive networks, which result in poor real-time performance, making them unsuitable for online robotics and autonomous driving applications. In this paper, we introduce SegNet4D, a novel real-time 4D semantic segmentation network offering both efficiency and strong semantic understanding. SegNet4D addresses 4D segmentation as two tasks: single-scan semantic segmentation and moving object segmentation, each tackled by a separate network head. Both results are combined in a motion-semantic fusion module to achieve comprehensive 4D segmentation. Additionally, instance information is extracted from the current scan and exploited for instance-wise segmentation consistency. Our approach surpasses state-of-the-art in both multi-scan semantic segmentation and moving object segmentation while offering greater efficiency, enabling real-time operation. Besides, its effectiveness and efficiency have also been validated on a real-world unmanned ground platform. Our code will be released at https://github.com/nubot-nudt/SegNet4D.
