The TESS Grand Unified Hot Jupiter Survey. I. Ten TESS Planets

We report the discovery of ten short-period giant planets (TOI-2193A b, TOI-2207 b, TOI-2236 b, TOI-2421 b, TOI-2567 b, TOI-2570 b, TOI-3331 b, TOI-3540A b, TOI-3693 b, TOI-4137 b). All of the planets were identified as planet candidates based on periodic flux dips observed by NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The signals were confirmed to be from transiting planets using ground-based time-series photometry, high angular resolution imaging, and high-resolution spectroscopy coordinated with the TESS Follow-up Observing Program. The ten newly discovered planets orbit relatively bright F and G stars ($G < 12.5$,~$T_\mathrm{eff}$ between 4800 and 6200 K). The planets' orbital periods range from 2 to 10~days, and their masses range from 0.2 to 2.2 Jupiter masses. TOI-2421 b is notable for being a Saturn-mass planet and TOI-2567 b for being a ``sub-Saturn'', with masses of $0.322\pm 0.073$ and $0.195\pm 0.030$ Jupiter masses, respectively. In most cases, we have little information about the orbital eccentricities. Two exceptions are TOI-2207 b, which has an 8-day period and a detectably eccentric orbit ($e = 0.17\pm0.05$), and TOI-3693 b, a 9-day planet for which we can set an upper limit of $e < 0.052$. The ten planets described here are the first new planets resulting from an effort to use TESS data to unify and expand on the work of previous ground-based transit surveys in order to create a large and statistically useful sample of hot Jupiters.

3D Segmentation Guided Style-based Generative Adversarial Networks for PET Synthesis

Potential radioactive hazards in full-dose positron emission tomography (PET) imaging remain a concern, whereas the quality of low-dose images is never desirable for clinical use. So it is of great interest to translate low-dose PET images into full-dose. Previous studies based on deep learning methods usually directly extract hierarchical features for reconstruction. We notice that the importance of each feature is different and they should be weighted dissimilarly so that tiny information can be captured by the neural network. Furthermore, the synthesis on some regions of interest is important in some applications. Here we propose a novel segmentation guided style-based generative adversarial network (SGSGAN) for PET synthesis. (1) We put forward a style-based generator employing style modulation, which specifically controls the hierarchical features in the translation process, to generate images with more realistic textures. (2) We adopt a task-driven strategy that couples a segmentation task with a generative adversarial network (GAN) framework to improve the translation performance. Extensive experiments show the superiority of our overall framework in PET synthesis, especially on those regions of interest.

A Roadmap for Big Model

With the rapid development of deep learning, training Big Models (BMs) for multiple downstream tasks becomes a popular paradigm. Researchers have achieved various outcomes in the construction of BMs and the BM application in many fields. At present, there is a lack of research work that sorts out the overall progress of BMs and guides the follow-up research. In this paper, we cover not only the BM technologies themselves but also the prerequisites for BM training and applications with BMs, dividing the BM review into four parts: Resource, Models, Key Technologies and Application. We introduce 16 specific BM-related topics in those four parts, they are Data, Knowledge, Computing System, Parallel Training System, Language Model, Vision Model, Multi-modal Model, Theory&Interpretability, Commonsense Reasoning, Reliability&Security, Governance, Evaluation, Machine Translation, Text Generation, Dialogue and Protein Research. In each topic, we summarize clearly the current studies and propose some future research directions. At the end of this paper, we conclude the further development of BMs in a more general view.

HD 83443c: A highly eccentric giant planet on a 22-year orbit

We report the discovery of a highly eccentric long-period Jovian planet orbiting the hot-Jupiter host HD\,83443. By combining radial velocity data from four instruments (AAT/UCLES, Keck/HIRES, HARPS, Minerva-Australis) spanning more than two decades, we find evidence for a planet with m~sin~$i=1.35^{+0.07}_{-0.06}$\,\mj, moving on an orbit with $a=8.0\pm$0.8\,au and eccentricity $e=0.76\pm$0.05. We combine our radial velocity analysis with \textit{Gaia} eDR3 /\textit{Hipparcos} proper motion anomalies and derive a dynamical mass of $1.5^{+0.5}_{-0.2} M_{\rm Jup}$. We perform a detailed dynamical simulation that reveals locations of stability within the system that may harbor additional planets, including stable regions within the habitable zone of the host star. HD\,83443 is a rare example of a system hosting a hot Jupiter and an exterior planetary companion. The high eccentricity of HD\,83443c suggests that a scattering event may have sent the hot Jupiter to its close orbit while leaving the outer planet on a wide and eccentric path.

Doubly resonant photoacoustic spectroscopy: ultra-high sensitivity meets ultra-wide dynamic range

Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based gas sensors with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low cost, and small footprint are desirable across a broad range of applications in energy, environment, safety, and public health. However, most works have focused on either acoustic resonator to enhance acoustic wave or optical resonator to enhance optical wave. Herein, we develop a gas sensor based on doubly resonant PAS in which the acoustic and optical waves are simultaneously enhanced using combined optical and acoustic resonators in a centimeter-long configuration. Not only the lower detection limit is enhanced by the double standing waves, but also the upper detection limit is expanded due to the short resonators. As an example, we developed a sensor by detecting acetylene (C2H2), achieving a noise equivalent absorption of 5.7*10-13 cm-1 and a dynamic range of eight orders. Compared to the state-of-the-art PAS gas sensors, the developed sensor increases the sensitivity by two orders of magnitude and extends the dynamic range by three orders of magnitude. Besides, a laser-cavity-molecule locking strategy is proposed to provide additional flexibility of fast gas detection.

Non-neglectable entropy effect on sintering of supported nanoparticles

Sintering refers to particle coalescence by heat, which has been known as a thermal phenomenon involving all aspects of natural science for centuries. It is particularly important in heterogeneous catalysis because normally sintering results in deactivation of the catalysts. In previous studies, the enthalpy contribution was considered to be dominant in sintering and the entropy effect is generally considered neglectable. However, we unambiguously demonstrate in this work that entropy could prevail over the enthalpy contribution to dominate the sintering behavior of supported nanoparticles (NPs) by designed experiments and improved theoretical framework. Using in situ Cs-corrected environmental scanning transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron-based ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we observe the unprecedent entropy-driven phenomenon that supported NPs reversibly redisperse upon heating and sinter upon cooling in three systems (Pd-CeO2, Cu-TiO2, Ag-TiO2). We quantitatively show that the configurational entropy of highly dispersed ad-atoms is large enough to reverse their sintering tendency at the elevated temperature. This work reshapes the basic understanding of sintering at the nanoscale and opens the door for various de-novo designs of thermodynamically stable nanocatalysts.

Influence of moments of inertia on transverse wobbling mode in odd-mass nuclei

The reported transverse wobbling band in odd-mass $^{105}$Pd has been reinvestigated by the triaxial particle rotor model. Employing different parameter sets of moment of inertia (MOI), several calculated results could be in good agreement with the experimental data, which show distinct modes of rotational excitation, respectively. These modes are sensitive to the ratio between the MOI at intermediate and short axis. With the increase of this ratio, a wobble about the short axis of the total angular momentum is gradually changed to a wobble about the intermediate axis. In addition, it is exhibited that precession and tunneling are two aspects of the quantum wobbling motion. The tunneling aspect dominates in the yrare states of $^{105}$Pd. The present results in $^{105}$Pd show the complexity of the transverse wobbling mode.

Coverage hole detection in WSN with force-directed algorithm and transfer learning

Coverage hole detection is an important research problem in wireless sensor network research community. However, distributed approaches proposed in recent years for coverage hole detection problem have high computational complexity. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for coverage hole detection in wireless sensor networks called FD-TL (Force-directed and Transfer-learning) which is based on layout generation capability of Force-directed Algorithms and image recognition power of Convolutional Neural Network with transfer learning. In contrast to existing approaches, the proposed approach is a pure topology-based approach since FD-TL can detect both triangular and non-triangular coverage holes from a wireless sensor network based on the input network topology without relying on the physical locations of the anchor nodes. In FD-TL, a Force-directed Algorithm is used to generate a series of possible layouts from a given input topology. Next, a Convolutional Neural Network is used to recognize potential coverage holes from the generated layouts. During the training phase, a transfer learning method is used to aid the recognition process. Experimental results show that FD-TL method can achieve 90% sensitivity and 96% specificity for coverage hole detection in wireless sensor networks.

Thin-Plate Spline Motion Model for Image Animation

Image animation brings life to the static object in the source image according to the driving video. Recent works attempt to perform motion transfer on arbitrary objects through unsupervised methods without using a priori knowledge. However, it remains a significant challenge for current unsupervised methods when there is a large pose gap between the objects in the source and driving images. In this paper, a new end-to-end unsupervised motion transfer framework is proposed to overcome such issue. Firstly, we propose thin-plate spline motion estimation to produce a more flexible optical flow, which warps the feature maps of the source image to the feature domain of the driving image. Secondly, in order to restore the missing regions more realistically, we leverage multi-resolution occlusion masks to achieve more effective feature fusion. Finally, additional auxiliary loss functions are designed to ensure that there is a clear division of labor in the network modules, encouraging the network to generate high-quality images. Our method can animate a variety of objects, including talking faces, human bodies, and pixel animations. Experiments demonstrate that our method performs better on most benchmarks than the state of the art with visible improvements in pose-related metrics.

Projected Sliced Wasserstein Autoencoder-based Hyperspectral Images Anomaly Detection

Anomaly detection (AD) has been an active research area in various domains. Yet, the increasing data scale, complexity, and dimension turn the traditional methods into challenging. Recently, the deep generative model, such as the variational autoencoder (VAE), has sparked a renewed interest in the AD problem. However, the probability distribution divergence used as the regularization is too strong, which causes the model cannot capture the manifold of the true data. In this paper, we propose the Projected Sliced Wasserstein (PSW) autoencoder-based anomaly detection method. Rooted in the optimal transportation, the PSW distance is a weaker distribution measure compared with $f$-divergence. In particular, the computation-friendly eigen-decomposition method is leveraged to find the principal component for slicing the high-dimensional data. In this case, the Wasserstein distance can be calculated with the closed-form, even the prior distribution is not Gaussian. Comprehensive experiments conducted on various real-world hyperspectral anomaly detection benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed method.

Revisiting Linearized Bregman Iterations under Lipschitz-like Convexity Condition

The linearized Bregman iterations (LBreI) and its variants have received considerable attention in signal/image processing and compressed sensing. Recently, LBreI has been extended to a larger class of nonconvex functions, along with several theoretical issues left for further investigation. In particular, the gradient Lipschitz continuity assumption precludes its use in many practical applications. In this study, we propose a generalized algorithmic framework to unify LBreI-type methods. Our main discovery is that the gradient Lipschitz continuity assumption can be replaced by a Lipschitz-like convexity condition in both convex and nonconvex cases. The proposed framework and theory are then applied to linear/quadratic inverse problems.

Impact of within-voxel heterogeneity in fibre geometry on spherical deconvolution

Axons in white matter have been shown to have varying geometries within a bundle using ex vivo imaging techniques, but what does this mean for diffusion MRI (dMRI) based spherical deconvolution (SD)? SD attempts to estimate the fibre orientation distribution function (fODF) by assuming a single dMRI fibre response function (FRF) for all white matter populations and deconvolving this FRF from the dMRI signal at each voxel to estimate the fODF. Variable fibre geometry within a bundle however suggests the FRF might not be constant even within a single voxel. We test what impact realistic fibre geometry has on SD by simulating the dMRI signal in a range of realistic white matter numerical phantoms, including synthetic phantoms and real axons segmented from electron microscopy. We demonstrate that variable fibre geometry leads to a variable FRF across axons and that in general no single FRF is effective to recover the underlying fibre orientation distribution function (fODF). This finding suggests that assuming a single FRF can lead to misestimation of the fODF, causing further downstream errors in techniques such as tractography.

Detecting and Monitoring Tidal Dissipation of Hot Jupiters in the Era of SiTian

Transit Timing Variation (TTV) of hot Jupiters provides direct observational evidence of planet tidal dissipation. Detecting tidal dissipation through TTV needs high precision transit timings and long timing baselines. In this work, we predict and discuss the potential scientific contribution of SiTian Survey in detecting and analyzing exoplanet TTV. We develop a tidal dissipation detection pipeline for SiTian Survey that aims at time-domain astronomy with 72 1-meter optical telescopes. The pipeline includes the modules of light curve deblending, transit timing obtaining, and TTV modeling. SiTian is capable to detect more than 25,000 exoplanets among which we expect $\sim$50 sources showing evidence of tidal dissipation. We present detection and analysis of tidal dissipating targets, based on simulated SiTian light curves of XO-3b and WASP-161b. The transit light curve modeling gives consistent results within 1$σ$ to input values of simulated light curves. Also, the parameter uncertainties predicted by Monte-Carlo Markov Chain are consistent with the distribution obtained from simulating and modeling the light curve 1000 times. The timing precision of SiTian observations is $\sim$ 0.5 minutes with one transit visit. We show that differences between TTV origins, e.g., tidal dissipation, apsidal precession, multiple planets, would be significant, considering the timing precision and baseline. The detection rate of tidal dissipating hot Jupiters would answer a crucial question of whether the planet migrates at an early formation stage or random stages due to perturbations, e.g., planet scattering, secular interaction. SiTian identified targets would be constructive given that the sample would extend tenfold.

Revisiting the Full Sets of Orbital Parameters for the XO-3 System: No evidence for Temporal Variation of the Spin-Orbit Angle

We present 12 new transit light curves and 16 new out-of-transit radial velocity measurements for the XO-3 system. By modelling our newly collected measurements together with archival photometric and Doppler velocimetric data, we confirmed the unusual configuration of the XO-3 system, which contains a massive planet ($M_P=11.92^{+0.59}_{-0.63} M_J$) on a relatively eccentric ($e=0.2853^{+0.0027}_{-0.0026}$) and short-period ($3.19152 \pm 0.00145\,$day) orbit around a massive star ($M_*=1.219^{+0.090}_{-0.095} M_{\odot}$). Furthermore, we find no strong evidence for a temporal change of either $V\sin i_{*}$ (and by extension, the stellar spin vector of XO-3), or the transit profile (and thus orbital angular momentum vector of XO-3b). We conclude that the discrepancy in previous Rossiter-McLaughlin measurements ($70.0^{\circ} \pm 15.0^{\circ}$ (Hebrard et al. 2008); $37.3^{\circ} \pm 3.7^{\circ}$ (Winn et al. 2009); $37.3^{\circ} \pm 3.0^{\circ}$ (Hirano et al. 2011)) may have stemmed from systematic noise sources.

Adaptively Sketched Bregman Projection Methods for Linear Systems

The sketch-and-project, as a general archetypal algorithm for solving linear systems, unifies a variety of randomized iterative methods such as the randomized Kaczmarz and randomized coordinate descent. However, since it aims to find a least-norm solution from a linear system, the randomized sparse Kaczmarz can not be included. This motivates us to propose a more general framework, called sketched Bregman projection (SBP) method, in which we are able to find solutions with certain structures from linear systems. To generalize the concept of adaptive sampling to the SBP method, we show how the progress, measured by Bregman distance, of single step depends directly on a sketched loss function. Theoretically, we provide detailed global convergence results for the SBP method with different adaptive sampling rules. At last, for the (sparse) Kaczmarz methods, a group of numerical simulations are tested, with which we verify that the methods utilizing sampling Kaczmarz-Motzkin rule demands the fewest computational costs to achieve a given error bound comparing to the corresponding methods with other sampling rules.

Constructions of Binary Cross Z-Complementary Pairs With Large CZC Ratio

Cross Z-complementary pairs (CZCPs) are a special kind of Z-complementary pairs (ZCPs) having zero autocorrelation sums around the in-phase position and end-shift position, also having zero cross-correlation sums around the end-shift position. It can be utilized as a key component in designing optimal training sequences for broadband spatial modulation (SM) systems over frequency selective channels. In this paper, we focus on designing new CZCPs with large cross Z-complementary ratio $(\mathrm{CZC}_{\mathrm{ratio}})$ by exploring two promising approaches. The first one of CZCPs via properly cascading sequences from a Golay complementary pair (GCP). The proposed construction leads to $(28L,13L)-\mathrm{CZCPs}$, $(28L,13L+\frac{L}{2})-\mathrm{CZCPs}$ and $(30L,13L-1)-\mathrm{CZCPs}$, where $L$ is the length of a binary GCP. Besides, we emphasize that, our proposed CZCPs have the largest $\mathrm{CZC}_{\mathrm{ratio}}=\frac{27}{28}$, compared with known CZCPs but no-perfect CZCPs in the literature. Specially, we proposed optimal binary CZCPs with $(28,13)-\mathrm{CZCP}$ and $(56,27)-\mathrm{CZCP}$. The second one of CZCPs based on Boolean functions (BFs), and the construction of CZCPs have the largest $\mathrm{CZC}_{\mathrm{ratio}}=\frac{13}{14}$, compared with known CZCPs but no-perfect CZCPs in the literature.

Slot-VPS: Object-centric Representation Learning for Video Panoptic Segmentation

Video Panoptic Segmentation (VPS) aims at assigning a class label to each pixel, uniquely segmenting and identifying all object instances consistently across all frames. Classic solutions usually decompose the VPS task into several sub-tasks and utilize multiple surrogates (e.g. boxes and masks, centres and offsets) to represent objects. However, this divide-and-conquer strategy requires complex post-processing in both spatial and temporal domains and is vulnerable to failures from surrogate tasks. In this paper, inspired by object-centric learning which learns compact and robust object representations, we present Slot-VPS, the first end-to-end framework for this task. We encode all panoptic entities in a video, including both foreground instances and background semantics, with a unified representation called panoptic slots. The coherent spatio-temporal object's information is retrieved and encoded into the panoptic slots by the proposed Video Panoptic Retriever, enabling it to localize, segment, differentiate, and associate objects in a unified manner. Finally, the output panoptic slots can be directly converted into the class, mask, and object ID of panoptic objects in the video. We conduct extensive ablation studies and demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on two benchmark datasets, Cityscapes-VPS (\textit{val} and test sets) and VIPER (\textit{val} set), achieving new state-of-the-art performance of 63.7, 63.3 and 56.2 VPQ, respectively.
