Evaluation of blood coagulation by optical vortex tracking

We investigated a new optical approach for the detection of the coagulation dynamic process by means of the information on the optical vortex. In our study, laser speckle was captured using a high-speed CMOS camera, and the statistical information of the optical vortex characterized the change in coagulation properties with time. Similar to the scattering particles, the motion of the optical vortex is restricted during coagulation, as a result, the whole process of coagulation can be detected by calculating the mean square displacement(MSD) of the optical vortex. The results demonstrate a close correlation between coagulation parameters measured using the optical vortex method and thrombelastography(TEG), creating a powerful opportunity for self-testing and real-time detection of coagulation.

Numerical approximations and error analysis of the Cahn-Hilliard equation with reaction rate dependent dynamic boundary conditions

We consider numerical approximations and error analysis for the Cahn-Hilliard equation with reaction rate dependent dynamic boundary conditions (P. Knopf et. al., arXiv, 2020). Based on the stabilized linearly implicit approach, a first-order in time, linear and energy stable scheme for solving this model is proposed. The corresponding semi-discretized-in-time error estimates for the scheme are also derived. Numerical experiments, including the comparison with the former work, the convergence results for the relaxation parameter $K\rightarrow0$ and $K\rightarrow\infty$ and the accuracy tests with respect to the time step size, are performed to validate the accuracy of the proposed scheme and the error analysis.

TOI-257b (HD 19916b): A Warm sub-Saturn Orbiting an Evolved F-type Star

We report the discovery of a warm sub-Saturn, TOI-257b (HD 19916b), based on data from NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The transit signal was detected by TESS and confirmed to be of planetary origin based on radial velocity observations. An analysis of the TESS photometry, the Minerva-Australis, FEROS, and HARPS radial velocities, and the asteroseismic data of the stellar oscillations reveals that TOI-257b has a mass of $M_P=0.138\pm0.023$\,$\rm{M_J}$ ($43.9\pm7.3$\,$M_{\rm \oplus}$), a radius of $R_P=0.639\pm0.013$\,$\rm{R_J}$ ($7.16\pm0.15$\,$R_{\rm \oplus}$), bulk density of $0.65^{+0.12}_{-0.11}$ (cgs), and period $18.38818^{+0.00085}_{-0.00084}$\,$\rm{days}$. TOI-257b orbits a bright ($\mathrm{V}=7.612$\,mag) somewhat evolved late F-type star with $M_*=1.390\pm0.046$\,$\rm{M_{\odot}}$, $R_*=1.888\pm0.033$\,$\rm{R_{\odot}}$, $T_{\rm eff}=6075\pm90$\,$\rm{K}$, and $v\sin{i}=11.3\pm0.5$\,km\,s$^{-1}$. Additionally, we find hints for a second non-transiting sub-Saturn mass planet on a $\sim71$\,day orbit using the radial velocity data. This system joins the ranks of a small number of exoplanet host stars ($\sim100$) that have been characterized with asteroseismology. Warm sub-Saturns are rare in the known sample of exoplanets, and thus the discovery of TOI-257b is important in the context of future work studying the formation and migration history of similar planetary systems.

Unveiling personnel movement in a larger indoor area with a non-overlapping multi-camera system

Surveillance cameras are widely applied for indoor occupancy measurement and human movement perception, which benefit for building energy management and social security. To address the challenges of limited view angle of single camera as well as lacking of inter-camera collaboration, this study presents a non-overlapping multi-camera system to enlarge the surveillance area and devotes to retrieve the same person appeared from different camera views. The system is deployed in an office building and four-day videos are collected. By training a deep convolutional neural network, the proposed system first extracts the appearance feature embeddings of each personal image, which detected from different cameras, for similarity comparison. Then, a stochastic inter-camera transition matrix is associated with appearance feature for further improving the person re-identification ranking results. Finally, a noise-suppression explanation is given for analyzing the matching improvements. This paper expands the scope of indoor movement perception based on non-overlapping multiple cameras and improves the accuracy of pedestrian re-identification without introducing additional types of sensors.

Convergence analysis of the time-stepping numerical methods for time-fractional nonlinear subdiffusion equations

In 1986, Dixon and McKee developed a discrete fractional Grönwall inequality [Z. Angew. Math. Mech., 66 (1986), pp. 535--544], which can be seen as a generalization of the classical discrete Grönwall inequality. However, this generalized discrete Grönwall inequality has not been widely applied in the numerical analysis of the time-stepping methods for the time-fractional evolution equations. The main purpose of this paper is to show how to apply the generalized discrete Grönwall inequality to prove the convergence of a class of time-stepping numerical methods for time-fractional nonlinear subdiffusion equations, including the popular fractional backward difference type methods of order one and two, and the second-order fractional Crank-Nicolson type methods. We obtain the optimal $L^2$ error estimate in space discretization. The convergence of the fast time-stepping numerical methods is also proved in a simple manner.

Free-form Description Guided 3D Visual Graph Network for Object Grounding in Point Cloud

3D object grounding aims to locate the most relevant target object in a raw point cloud scene based on a free-form language description. Understanding complex and diverse descriptions, and lifting them directly to a point cloud is a new and challenging topic due to the irregular and sparse nature of point clouds. There are three main challenges in 3D object grounding: to find the main focus in the complex and diverse description; to understand the point cloud scene; and to locate the target object. In this paper, we address all three challenges. Firstly, we propose a language scene graph module to capture the rich structure and long-distance phrase correlations. Secondly, we introduce a multi-level 3D proposal relation graph module to extract the object-object and object-scene co-occurrence relationships, and strengthen the visual features of the initial proposals. Lastly, we develop a description guided 3D visual graph module to encode global contexts of phrases and proposals by a nodes matching strategy. Extensive experiments on challenging benchmark datasets (ScanRefer and Nr3D) show that our algorithm outperforms existing state-of-the-art. Our code is available at https://github.com/PNXD/FFL-3DOG.

Effects of correlations on phase diagrams of the two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with the longer-range hoppings

For the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model on the two-dimensional square lattice, two third nearest neighbor hoppings which preserve chiral symmetry are introduced. Like the case of one dimension, the longer-range hopping can drive topological transitions and leads to the larger topological invariant (vectored Berry phase for the two dimensional SSH model). We obtain the phase boundaries and topological phase diagrams from the winding pattern of $ρ(k_l)$ of the Bloch Hamiltonian. Effects of correlations on the extended two dimensional SSH model are also investigated. The correlation shifts the phase boundaries and leads to topological transitions. Several special points in non-interacting phase diagrams are chosen to illustrate the different phase transitions and a correlations-driven topologically non-trivial phase from the trivial one is found. In this work, the slave-rotor mean field method is applied to the interacting model and we focus on the case of physical electrons, i.e. the Mott transition of charge degree of freedom is avoided in our investigations.

Phase transitions of the dimerized Kane-Mele model with/without the strong interaction

The dimerized Kane-Mele model with/without the strong interaction is studied using analytical methods. The boundary of the topological phase transition of the model without strong interaction is obtained. Our results show that the occurrence of the transition only depends on dimerized parameter . From the one-particle spectrum, we obtain the completed phase diagram including the quantum spin Hall (QSH) state and the topologically trivial insulator. Then, using different mean-field methods, we investigate the Mott transition and the magnetic transition of the strongly correlated dimerized Kane-Mele model. In the region between the two transitions, the topological Mott insulator (TMI) with characters of Mott insulators and topological phases may be the most interesting phase. In this work, effects of the hopping anisotropy and Hubbard interaction U on boundaries of the two transitions are observed in detail. The completed phase diagram of the dimerized Kane-Mele-Hubbard model is also obtained in this work. Quantum fluctuations have extremely important influences on a quantum system. However, investigations are under the framework of the mean field treatment in this work and the effects of fluctuations in this model will be discussed in the future.

The competition between the intrinsic and Rashba spin-orbit coupling and effects of correlations on Rashba SOC-driven transitions in the Kane-Mele model

We investigate, firstly, the effects of the Rashba SOC on the band structrue of the Kane-Mele model. The competition between the Rashba SOC and the intrinsic SOC can lead to the rich phenomenology. The Rashba SOC can drive the indirect and direct energy gap to close successively, but maintain the band touching between the valence band and the conduction band when the Rashba SOC is large enough to dominant the competition. We find that these touching points are located at $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ or/and some $2π/3$ rotationally symmetric points around $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ in the Brillouin zone. The indirect and direct energy gap closings correspond to the topologically trivial and non-trivial phase transitions respectively. For the small intrinsic SOC, the topologically non-trivial transition occurs when the ratio of the Rashba SOC to the intrinsic SOC is equal to the classical result, i.e. $2\sqrt{3}$. For the large intrinsic SOC, however, we find that the ratio decreases with the increasing intrinsic SOC. Secondly, using the slave-rotor mean field method we investigate the influences of the correlation on the Rashba SOC-driven topologically trivial and non-trivial transition in both the charge condensate and Mott regions. The topological Mott insulator with gapped or gapless spin excitations can arise from the interplay of the Rashba SOC and correlations.

An atomic perspective on the serpentine-chlorite solid-state transformation

Serpentine minerals are important components of metamorphic rocks and promising geo-materials for nanotechnology. Lizardite, the most abundant serpentine mineral, can be transformed into chlorite during metamorphism. This intriguing phase transformation should affect the deformation behavior during aseismic creep and slow slip at the base of the subduction zone, but has not been understood structurally and chemically at the atomic scale. Here we visualized cations and oxygen atoms using the state-of-the-art low-dose scanning transmission electron microscopy and found that restructuring mainly involves the synergistic migration of tetrahedral cations and oxygen anions, coupled with the migration of octahedral trivalent cations into the brucite-like interlayer. Further, we show that different serpentine polytypes result in distinct regular interstratifications of serpentine and chlorite. Our results clarify the long-standing puzzle of how solid-state layer silicate transformations occur and lead to long-period ordered structures.

Multi-Model Least Squares-Based Recomputation Framework for Large Data Analysis

Most multilayer least squares (LS)-based neural networks are structured with two separate stages: unsupervised feature encoding and supervised pattern classification. Once the unsupervised learning is finished, the latent encoding would be fixed without supervised fine-tuning. However, in complex tasks such as handling the ImageNet dataset, there are often many more clues that can be directly encoded, while the unsupervised learning, by definition cannot know exactly what is useful for a certain task. This serves as the motivation to retrain the latent space representations to learn some clues that unsupervised learning has not yet learned. In particular, the error matrix from the output layer is pulled back to each hidden layer, and the parameters of the hidden layer are recalculated with Moore-Penrose (MP) inverse for more generalized representations. In this paper, a recomputation-based multilayer network using MP inverse (RML-MP) is developed. A sparse RML-MP (SRML-MP) model to boost the performance of RML-MP is then proposed. The experimental results with varying training samples (from 3 K to 1.8 M) show that the proposed models provide better generalization performance than most representation learning algorithms.

Control of a sedimenting elliptical particle by electromagnetic forces

In this paper, the effectiveness of electromagnetic forces on controlling the motion of a sedimenting elliptical particle is investigated using the immersed interface-lattice Boltzmann method (II-LBM), in which a signed distance function is adopted to apply the jump conditions for the II-LBM and to add external electromagnetic forces. First, mechanisms of electromagnetic control on suppressing vorticity generation based on the vorticity equation and vortex shedding based on the streamwise momentum equation are discussed. Then, systematical investigations are performed to quantify and qualify the effects of the electromagnetic control by changing the electromagnetic strength, the initial orientation angle of the elliptical particle, and the density ratio of the particle to the fluid. To demonstrate the control effect of different cases, comparisons of vorticity fields, particle trajectories, orientation angles, and energy transfers of the particles are presented. Results show that the rotational motion of the particle can be well controlled by appropriate magnitudes of electromagnetic forces. In a relatively high solid to fluid density ratio case where vortex shedding appears, the sedimentation speed can increase nearly 40\% and the motion of the particle turns into a steady descent motion once an appropriate magnitude of the electromagnetic force is applied. When the magnitude of the electromagnetic force is excessive, the particle will deviate from the center of the side walls. In addition, the controlling approach is shown to be robust for various initial orientation angles and solid to fluid density ratios.

Deciphering the nature of X(3872) in heavy ion collisions

Exploring the nature of exotic multiquark candidates such as the $X(3872)$ plays a pivotal role in understanding quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Despite significant efforts, consensus on their internal structures is still lacking. As a prime example, it remains a pressing open question to decipher the $X(3872)$ state between two popular exotic configurations: a loose hadronic molecule or a compact tetraquark. We demonstrate a novel approach to help address this problem by studying the $X(3872)$ production in heavy ion collisions, where a hot fireball with ample light as well as charm (anti-)quarks is available for producing the exotics. Adopting a multiphase transport model (AMPT) for describing such collisions and implementing appropriate production mechanism of either molecule or tetraquark picture, we compute and compare a series of observables for $X(3872)$ in Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We find the fireball volume plays a crucial role, leading to a 2-order-of-magnitude difference in the $X(3872)$ yield and a markedly different centrality dependence between hadronic molecules and compact tetraquarks, thus offering a unique opportunity for distinguishing the two scenarios. We also make the first prediction of $X(3872)$ elliptic flow coefficient to be tested by future experimental measurements.

Signatures of Chiral Magnetic Effect in the Collisions of Isobars

Quantum anomaly is a fundamental feature of chiral fermions. In chiral materials the microscopic anomaly leads to nontrivial macroscopic transport processes such as the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME), which has been in the spotlight lately across disciplines of physics. The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in relativistic nuclear collisions provides the unique example of a chiral material consisting of intrinsically relativistic chiral fermions. Potential discovery of CME in QGP is of utmost significance, with extensive experimental searches carried out over the past decade. A decisive new collider experiment, dedicated to detecting CME in the collisions of isobars, was performed in 2018 with analysis now underway. In this paper, we develop the state-of-the-art theoretical tool for describing CME phenomenon in these collisions and propose an appropriate isobar subtraction strategy for best background removal. Based on that, we make quantitative predictions for signatures of CME in the collisions of isobars. A new and robust observable that is independent of axial charge uncertainty -- the ratio between isobar-subtracted $γ-$ and $δ-$ correlators, is found to be $- ( 0.41 \pm 0.27 )$ for event-plane measurement and $ - ( 0.90 \pm 0.45 )$ for reaction-plane measurement.

Sparse Sampling Kaczmarz-Motzkin Method with Linear Convergence

The randomized sparse Kaczmarz method was recently proposed to recover sparse solutions of linear systems. In this work, we introduce a greedy variant of the randomized sparse Kaczmarz method by employing the sampling Kaczmarz-Motzkin method, and prove its linear convergence in expectation with respect to the Bregman distance in the noiseless and noisy cases. This greedy variant can be viewed as a unification of the sampling Kaczmarz-Motzkin method and the randomized sparse Kaczmarz method, and hence inherits the merits of these two methods. Numerically, we report a couple of experimental results to demonstrate its superiority

EventAnchor: Reducing Human Interactions in Event Annotation of Racket Sports Videos

The popularity of racket sports (e.g., tennis and table tennis) leads to high demands for data analysis, such as notational analysis, on player performance. While sports videos offer many benefits for such analysis, retrieving accurate information from sports videos could be challenging. In this paper, we propose EventAnchor, a data analysis framework to facilitate interactive annotation of racket sports video with the support of computer vision algorithms. Our approach uses machine learning models in computer vision to help users acquire essential events from videos (e.g., serve, the ball bouncing on the court) and offers users a set of interactive tools for data annotation. An evaluation study on a table tennis annotation system built on this framework shows significant improvement of user performances in simple annotation tasks on objects of interest and complex annotation tasks requiring domain knowledge.

TOI-954 b and K2-329 b: Short-Period Saturn-Mass Planets that Test whether Irradiation Leads to Inflation

We report the discovery of two short-period Saturn-mass planets, one transiting the G subgiant TOI-954 (TIC 44792534, $ V = 10.343 $, $ T = 9.78 $) observed in TESS sectors 4 and 5, and one transiting the G dwarf K2-329 (EPIC 246193072, $ V = 12.70 $, $ K = 10.67 $) observed in K2 campaigns 12 and 19. We confirm and characterize these two planets with a variety of ground-based archival and follow-up observations, including photometry, reconnaissance spectroscopy, precise radial velocity, and high-resolution imaging. Combining all available data, we find that TOI-954 b has a radius of $0.852_{-0.062}^{+0.053} \, R_{\mathrm{J}}$ and a mass of $0.174_{-0.017}^{+0.018} \, M_{\mathrm{J}}$ and is in a 3.68 day orbit, while K2-329 b has a radius of $0.774_{-0.024}^{+0.026} \, R_{\mathrm{J}}$ and a mass of $0.260_{-0.022}^{+0.020} \, M_{\mathrm{J}}$ and is in a 12.46 day orbit. As TOI-954 b is 30 times more irradiated than K2-329 b but more or less the same size, these two planets provide an opportunity to test whether irradiation leads to inflation of Saturn-mass planets and contribute to future comparative studies that explore Saturn-mass planets at contrasting points in their lifetimes.

Explanation of Reinforcement Learning Model in Dynamic Multi-Agent System

Recently, there has been increasing interest in transparency and interpretability in Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) systems. Verbal explanations, as the most natural way of communication in our daily life, deserve more attention, since they allow users to gain a better understanding of the system which ultimately could lead to a high level of trust and smooth collaboration. This paper reports a novel work in generating verbal explanations for DRL behaviors agent. A rule-based model is designed to construct explanations using a series of rules which are predefined with prior knowledge. A learning model is then proposed to expand the implicit logic of generating verbal explanation to general situations by employing rule-based explanations as training data. The learning model is shown to have better flexibility and generalizability than the static rule-based model. The performance of both models is evaluated quantitatively through objective metrics. The results show that verbal explanation generated by both models improve subjective satisfaction of users towards the interpretability of DRL systems. Additionally, seven variants of the learning model are designed to illustrate the contribution of input channels, attention mechanism, and proposed encoder in improving the quality of verbal explanation.
