Universal $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$ structure and short-range charge order at the surfaces of BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_{x}$As$_{2}$ compounds with various Co doping levels

The structure and electronic order at the cleaved (001) surfaces of the newly-discovered pnictide superconductors BaFe$_{2-x}$Co$_{x}$As$_{2}$ with x ranging from 0 to 0.32 are systematically investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy. A $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$ surface structure is revealed for all the compounds, and is identified to be Ba layer with half Ba atoms lifted-off by combination with theoretical simulation. A universal short-range charge order is observed at this $\sqrt{2}\times\sqrt{2}$ surface associated with an energy gap of about 30 meV for all the compounds.

Origin of X-ray Emission from Transient Black Hole Candidates in Quiescence

We report results from a systematic study of X-ray emission from black hole transients in quiescence. In this state mass accretion is thought to follow the geometry of an outer optically thick, geometrically thin disc and an inner optically thin, geometrically thick radiatively inefficient accretion flow (RIAF). The inner flow is likely also coupled to the jets near the black hole that are often seen in such systems. The goal of the study is to see whether the X-ray emission in the quiescent state is mainly powered by the accretion flow or the jets. Using data from deep XMM-Newton observations of selected black hole transients, we have found that the quiescent X-ray spectra are, to a high precision, of power-law shape in the cases of GRO J1655-40 and V404 Cyg. Such spectra deviate significantly from the expected X-ray spectrum of the RIAF at very low accretion rates. On the other hand, they can naturally be explained by emission from the jets, if the emitting electrons follow a power-law spectral distribution (as is often assumed). The situation remains ambiguous in the case of XTE J1550-564, due to the relatively poorer quality of the data. We discuss the implication of the results.

Dispersive Coupling Between the Superconducting Transmission Line Resonator and the Double Quantum Dots

Realization of controllable interaction between distant qubits is one of the major problems in scalable solid state quantum computing. We study a superconducting transmission line resonator (TLR) as a tunable dispersive coupler for the double-dot molecules. A general interaction Hamiltonian of $n$ two-electron spin-based qubits and the TLR is presented, where the double-dot qubits are biased at the large detuning region and the TLR is always empty and virtually excited. Our analysis o the main decoherence sources indicates that various major quantum operations can be reliably implemented with current technology.

On The Orbital Evolution of Jupiter Mass Protoplanet Embedded in A Self-Gravity Disk

We performed a series of hydro-dynamic simulations to investigate the orbital migration of a Jovian planet embedded in a proto-stellar disk. In order to take into account of the effect of the disk's self gravity, we developed and adopted an \textbf{Antares} code which is based on a 2-D Godunov scheme to obtain the exact Reimann solution for isothermal or polytropic gas, with non-reflecting boundary conditions. Our simulations indicate that in the study of the runaway (type III) migration, it is important to carry out a fully self consistent treatment of the gravitational interaction between the disk and the embedded planet. Through a series of convergence tests, we show that adequate numerical resolution, especially within the planet's Roche lobe, critically determines the outcome of the simulations. We consider a variety of initial conditions and show that isolated, non eccentric protoplanet planets do not undergo type III migration. We attribute the difference between our and previous simulations to the contribution of a self consistent representation of the disk's self gravity. Nevertheless, type III migration cannot be completely suppressed and its onset requires finite amplitude perturbations such as that induced by planet-planet interaction. We determine the radial extent of type III migration as a function of the disk's self gravity.

Quantum Computation and Bell-state Measurement with Double-Dot Molecules

We propose a quantum computation architecture of double-dot molecules, where the qubit is encoded in the molecule two-electron spin states. By arranging the two dots inside each molecule perpendicular to the qubit scaling line, the interactions between neighboring qubits are largely simplified and the scaling to multi-qubit system becomes straightforward. As an Ising-model effective interaction can be expediently switched on and off between any two neighboring molecules by adjusting the potential offset between the two dots, universal two-qubit gates can be implemented without requiring time-dependent control of the tunnel coupling between the dots. A Bell-state measurement scheme for qubit encoded in double-dot singlet and triplet states is also proposed for quantum molecules arranged in this way.

One-step preparation of cluster states in quantum dot molecules

Cluster states, a special type of highly entangled states, are a universal resource for measurement-based quantum computation. Here, we propose an efficient one-step generation scheme for cluster states in semiconductor quantum dot molecules, where qubits are encoded on singlet and triplet state of two coupled quantum dots. By applying a collective electrical field or simultaneously adjusting interdot bias voltages of all double-dot molecule, we get a switchable Ising-like interaction between any two adjacent quantum molecule qubits. The initialization, the single qubit measurement, and the experimental parameters are discussed, which shows the large cluster state preparation and one-way quantum computation implementable in semiconductor quantum dots with the present techniques.

Quantum Non-Demolition Bell State Measurement and N-party GHZ State Preparation in Quantum Dot

By exploiting the fermionic qubit parity measurement, we present a scheme to realize quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement of Bell-states and generate n-party GHZ state in quantum dot. Compared with the original protocol, the required electron transfer before and after parity measurement can be nonadiabatic, which may speed up the operation speed and make the omitting of spin-orbit interaction more reasonable. This may help us to construct CNOT gate without highly precise control of coupling as the way of D. Gottesman and I. L. Chuang.
