Computations in Equivariant Topological Hochschild Homology

One of the most effective approaches to computations in algebraic $K$-theory is trace methods, which compare algebraic $K$-theory with topological Hochschild homology and topological cyclic homology. In recent work, two of the authors, together with Gerhardt, construct an equivariant refinement of topological Hochschild homology ($\mathrm{ETHH}$) which receives a trace map from Merling's genuine equivariant algebraic $K$-theory. In this paper, we perform foundational computations of $\mathrm{ETHH}$ that can serve as input for future computations of $\mathrm{ETHH}$ and equivariant topological cyclic homology. Namely, we compute $\mathrm{ETHH}(H\underline{\mathbb{F}}_p)$ for odd primes, showcasing the complexity of B\"okstedt periodicity in this setting. Furthermore, we give computations of $\mathrm{ETHH}$ for the equivariant complex cobordism spectra $MU_G$ and $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$.

Higher Spherical Scissors Congruence I: Hopf Algebra

In the study of the generalization of Hilbert's Third Problem to spherical geometry, Sah constructed a Hopf algebra of spherical polytopes with product given by join and coproduct given by a generalized Dehn invariant. Using Zakharevich's reinterpretation of scissors congruence via algebraic K-theory, we lift the Sah algebra to an $(E_\infty, E_1)$-Hopf algebra spectrum whose $\pi_0$ is the classical Sah algebra. As an application, we show that the reduced spherical scissors congruence $K$-theory groups $\widetilde K_{2n}\big(\mathcal{P}^{S^{2k+1}}_{O(2k+2)}\big)$ are nonzero for all nonnegative integers $n$ and $k$.

From Hopf Algebras in Model Categories to Hopf Algebras in $\infty$-categories

We show that algebra objects in model categories can be transferred to algebra objects in $\infty$-categories, without any cofibrancy or fibrancy assumptions on the algebra. We furthermore show under some mild extra assumptions that this correspondence extends to commutative bialgebras and to commutative Hopf algebras.

An isovariant Blakers--Massey theorem

An isovariant map is an equivariant map between $G$-spaces which strictly preserves isotropy groups. In this paper, we lay the groundwork for the study of isovariant stable homotopy theory when $G$ is a finite group. We prove an isovariant Blakers--Massey theorem and its $n$-cubical generalization, define a suitable notion of suspension (by a trivial representation sphere) in the isovariant category, and prove an isovariant Freudenthal suspension theorem.

Trace methods for equivariant algebraic K-theory

In the past decades, one of the most fruitful approaches to the study of algebraic $K$-theory has been trace methods, which construct and study trace maps from algebraic $K$-theory to topological Hochschild homology and related invariants. In recent years, theories of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory have emerged, but thus far few tools are available for the study and computation of these theories. In this paper, we lay the foundations for a trace methods approach to equivariant algebraic $K$-theory. For $G$ a finite group, we construct a Dennis trace map from equivariant algebraic $K$-theory to a $G$-equivariant version of topological Hochschild homology; for $G$ the trivial group this recovers the ordinary Dennis trace map. We show that upon taking fixed points, this recovers the trace map of Adamyk--Gerhardt--Hess--Klang--Kong, and gives a trace map from the fixed points of coarse equivariant $A$-theory to the free loop space. We also establish important properties of equivariant topological Hochschild homology, such as Morita invariance, and explain why it can be considered as a multiplicative norm.

A shadow perspective on equivariant Hochschild homologies

Shadows for bicategories, defined by Ponto, provide a useful framework that generalizes classical and topological Hochschild homology. In this paper, we define Hochschild-type invariants for monoids in a symmetric monoidal, simplicial model category $\mathsf V$, as well as for small $\mathsf V$-categories. We show that each of these constructions extends to a shadow on an appropriate bicategory, which implies in particular that they are Morita invariant. We also define a generalized theory of Hochschild homology twisted by an automorphism and show that it is Morita invariant. Hochschild homology of Green functors and $C_n$-twisted topological Hochschild homology fit into this framework, which allows us to conclude that these theories are Morita invariant. We also study linearization maps relating the topological and algebraic theories, proving that the linearization map for topological Hochschild homology arises as a lax shadow functor, and constructing a new linearization map relating topological restriction homology and algebraic restriction homology. Finally, we construct a twisted Dennis trace map from the fixed points of equivariant algebraic $K$-theory to twisted topological Hochschild homology.

Isovariant homotopy theory and fixed point invariants

An isovariant map is an equivariant map between $G$-spaces which strictly preserves isotropy groups. We consider an isovariant analogue of Klein--Williams equivariant intersection theory for a finite group $G$. We prove that under certain reasonable dimension and codimension conditions on $H$-fixed subspaces (for $H\leq G$), the fixed points of a self-map of a compact smooth $G$-manifold can be removed isovariantly if and only if the equivariant Reidemeister trace of the map vanishes. In doing so, we study isovariant maps between manifolds up to isovariant homotopy, yielding an isovariant Whitehead's theorem. In addition, we speculate on the role of isovariant homotopy theory in distinguishing manifolds up to homeomorphism.

Equivariant nonabelian Poincar\'e duality and equivariant factorization homology of Thom spectra

In this paper, we study genuine equivariant factorization homology and its interaction with equivariant Thom spectra, which we construct using the language of parametrized higher category theory. We describe the genuine equivariant factorization homology of Thom spectra, and use this description to compute several examples of interest. A key ingredient for our computations is an equivariant nonabelian Poincar\'e duality theorem, in which we prove that factorization homology with coefficients in a $G$-space is given by a mapping space. We compute the Real topological Hochschild homology ($THR$) of the Real bordism spectrum $MU_\mathbb{R}$ and of the equivariant Eilenberg--MacLane spectra $H\underline{\mathbb{F}}_2$ and $H\underline{\mathbb{Z}}_{(2)}$, as well as factorization homology of the sphere $S^{2\sigma}$ with coefficients in these Eilenberg--MacLane spectra. In Appendix B, Jeremy Hahn and Dylan Wilson compute $THR(H\underline{\mathbb{Z}})$.

Computational tools for twisted topological Hochschild homology of equivariant spectra

Twisted topological Hochschild homology of $C_n$-equivariant spectra was introduced by Angeltveit, Blumberg, Gerhardt, Hill, Lawson, and Mandell, building on the work of Hill, Hopkins, and Ravenel on norms in equivariant homotopy theory. In this paper we introduce tools for computing twisted THH, which we apply to computations for Thom spectra, Eilenberg-MacLane spectra, and the real bordism spectrum $MU_{\mathbb{R}}$. In particular, we construct an equivariant version of the B\"okstedt spectral sequence, the formulation of which requires further development of the Hochschild homology of Green functors, first introduced by Blumberg, Gerhardt, Hill, and Lawson.

The May-Milgram filtration and $E_k$-cells

We describe an $E_k$-cell structure on the free $E_{k+1}$-algebra on a point, and more generally describe how the May-Milgram filtration of $\Omega^m \Sigma^m S^{k}$ lifts to a filtration of the free $E_{k+m}$-algebra on a point by iterated pushouts of free $E_k$-algebras.

Twisted Calabi-Yau ring spectra, string topology, and gauge symmetry

In this paper, we import the theory of "Calabi-Yau" algebras and categories from symplectic topology and topological field theories to the setting of spectra in stable homotopy theory. Twistings in this theory will be particularly important. There will be two types of Calabi-Yau structures in the setting of ring spectra: one that applies to compact algebras and one that applies to smooth algebras. The main application of twisted compact Calabi-Yau ring spectra that we will study is to describe, prove, and explain a certain duality phenomenon in string topology. This is a duality between the manifold string topology of Chas-Sullivan and the Lie group string topology of Chataur-Menichi. This will extend and generalize work of Gruher. Then, generalizing work of the first author and Jones, we show how the gauge group of the principal bundle acts on this compact Calabi-Yau structure, and compute some explicit examples. We then extend the notion of the Calabi-Yau structure to smooth ring spectra, and prove that Thom ring spectra of (virtual) bundles over the loop space, $\Omega M$, have this structure. In the case when $M$ is a sphere we will use these twisted smooth Calabi-Yau ring spectra to study Lagrangian immersions of the sphere into its cotangent bundle. We recast the work of Abouzaid-Kragh to show that the topological Hochschild homology of the Thom ring spectrum induced by the $h$-principle classifying map of the Lagrangian immersion, detects whether that immersion can be Lagrangian isotopic to an embedding. We then compute some examples. Finally, we interpret these Calabi-Yau structures directly in terms of topological Hochschild homology and cohomology.

The factorization theory of Thom spectra and twisted non-abelian Poincar\'e duality

We give a description of the factorization homology and $E_n$ topological Hochschild cohomology of Thom spectra arising from $n$-fold loop maps $f: A \to BO$, where $A = \Omega^n X$ is an $n$-fold loop space. We describe the factorization homology $\int_M Th(f)$ as the Thom spectrum associated to a certain map $\int _M A \to BO$. When $M$ is framed and $X$ is $(n-1)$-connected, this spectrum is equivalent to a Thom spectrum of a virtual bundle over the mapping space $Map_c(M,X)$; in general, this is a Thom spectrum of a virtual bundle over a certain section space. This can be viewed as a twisted form of the non-abelian Poincar\'e duality theorem of Segal, Salvatore, and Lurie, which occurs when $f: A \to BO$ is nullhomotopic. This result also generalizes the results of Blumberg-Cohen-Schlichtkrull on the topological Hochschild homology of Thom spectra, and of Schlichtkrull on higher topological Hochschild homology of Thom spectra. We use this to calculate the factorization homology of some Thom spectra, including the classical cobordism spectra, spectra arising from systems of groups, and the Eilenberg-MacLane spectra $H \mathbb{Z}/p$, $H\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$, and $H\mathbb{Z}$. We build upon the description of the factorization homology of Thom spectra to study the ($n=1$ and higher) topological Hochschild cohomology of Thom spectra, which enables calculations and a description in terms of sections of a parametrized spectrum. If $X$ is a closed manifold, Atiyah duality for parametrized spectra allows us to deduce a duality between $E_n$ topological Hochschild homology and $E_n$ topological Hochschild cohomology, recovering string topology operations when $f$ is nullhomotopic. In conjunction with the higher Deligne conjecture, this gives $E_{n+1}$ structures on a certain family of Thom spectra, which were not previously known to be ring spectra.
