High-energy and Very High-energy Constraints from Log-parabolic Spectral Models in Narrow-line Seyfert 1 Galaxies

Narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1s) are a well-established class of $\gamma$-ray sources, showing the presence of a jet like the more common flat-spectrum radio quasars. The evidence of $\gamma$-ray emission poses the issue of the location of the $\gamma$-ray emitting zone and of the contribution of the $\gamma$-$\gamma$ absorption within the broad-line region (BLR), since such objects have been detected by Fermi-LAT in the MeV-GeV energy range but not by imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes beyond 100 GeV. We discuss how the spectral properties of three NLSy1s (SBS 0846+513, PMN J0948+0022, and PKS 1502+036) derived from the Fermi Large Area Telescope Fourth Source Catalog (4FGL) compare with theoretical models based on the observed properties of the BLR. In particular, we focus on the question on how simple power-law spectral models and log-parabolic ones could be disentangled in $\gamma$-ray narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies by means of current Fermi-LAT or future imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes data. We find that the only possibility for a log-parabolic model to mimic a power-law model in the energy band above $E \sim 100$ GeV is to have a very small value of the curvature parameter $ \beta \sim 0.05$.

High-Temperature Conventional Superconductivity in the Boron-Carbon system: Material Trends

In this work we probe the possibility of high-temperature conventional superconductivity in the boron-carbon system, using ab-initio screening. A database of 320 metastable structures with fixed composition (50$\%$/50$\%$) is generated with the Minima-Hopping method, and characterized with electronic and vibrational descriptors. Full electron-phonon calculations on sixteen representative structures allow to identify general trends in $T_{\textrm{c}}$ across and within the four families in the energy landscape, and to construct an approximate $T_{\textrm{c}}$ predictor, based on transparently interpretable and easily computable electronic and vibrational descriptors. Based on these, we estimate that around 10$\%$ of all metallic structures should exhibit $T_{\textrm{c}}$'s above 30 $K$. This work is a first step towards ab-initio design of new high-$T_{\textrm{c}}$ superconductors.

Superconductivity in sodalite-like yttrium hydride clathrates

We report ab-initio calculations of the superconducting properties of two high-Tc sodalite-like clathrate yttrium hydrides, YH6 and YH10, within the fully anisotropic ME theory, including Coulomb corrections. For both compounds we find almost isotropic superconducting gaps, resulting from a uniform distribution of the electron-phonon coupling over phonon modes and electronic states of mixed Y and H character. The Coulomb screening is rather weak, resulting in a Morel-Anderson pseudopotential mu*= 0:11, at odds with claims of unusually large Tc in lanthanum hydrides. The corresponding critical temperatures at 300 GPa exceed room temperature (Tc = 290 K and 310 K for YH6 and YH10), in agreement with a previous isotropic-gap calculation. The different response of these two compounds to external pressure, along with a comparison to low-Tc superconducting YH3, may inspire strategies to improve the superconducting properties of this class of hydrides.

Constraints to the SSC model for Mkn 501

We fit the SEDs of the TeV blazar Mkn 501 adopting the homogeneous Synchrotron-Self Compton model to simultaneous X-ray and TeV spectra recently become available. We present detailed model spectra calculated with the above constraints and taking into account the absorption of TeV photons by the IR background. We found that the curved TeV spectra can be naturally reproduced even without IRB absorption. Taking IRB absorption into account changes the required parameter values only slightly.

Unifying models for X-ray selected and Radio selected BL Lac Objects

We discuss alternative interpretations of the differences in the Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) of BL Lacs found in complete Radio or X-ray surveys. A large body of observations in different bands suggests that the SEDs of BL Lac objects appearing in X-ray surveys differ from those appearing in radio surveys mainly in having a (synchrotron) spectral cut-off (or break) at much higher frequency. In order to explain the different properties of radio and X-ray selected BL Lacs Giommi and Padovani proposed a model based on a common radio luminosity function. At each radio luminosity, objects with high frequency spectral cut-offs are assumed to be a minority. Nevertheless they dominate the X-ray selected population due to the larger X-ray-to-radio-flux ratio. An alternative model explored here (reminiscent of the orientation models previously proposed) is that the X-ray luminosity function is "primary" and that at each X-ray luminosity a minority of objects has larger radio-to-X-ray flux ratio. The predictions of the two scenarios, computed via a Montecarlo technique, are compared with the observed properties of BL Lacs in the two samples extracted respectively from the 1 Jy radio survey and the Einstein Slew Survey. We show that both models can explain a number but not all the observed features. We then propose a completely new approach, based on the idea that the physical parameter which governs the shape of the SEDs, is (or is associated with) the bolometric luminosity. Assuming an empirical relation between spectral shape and luminosity we show that the observational properties of the two surveys can be reproduced at least with the same accuracy as the two previous models.

A generating partition for the standard map

A procedure to obtain the symbolic dynamics for conservative dynamical systems is introduced with reference to the standard map in a strongly chaotic regime. The method extends an approach previously developed for highly dissipative systems. It is based on the construction of a generating partition from homoclinic tangencies and fibers of invariant manifolds. It is found that some arbitrariness in the construction of the partition is unavoidable.

Cellular Automaton for Realistic Modelling of Landslides

A numerical model is developed for the simulation of debris flow in landslides over a complex three dimensional topography. The model is based on a lattice, in which debris can be transferred among nearest neighbors according to established empirical relationships for granular flows. The model is then validated by comparing a simulation with reported field data. Our model is in fact a realistic elaboration of simpler ``sandpile automata'', which have in recent years been studied as supposedly paradigmatic of ``self-organized criticality''. Statistics and scaling properties of the simulation are examined, and show that the model has an intermittent behavior.
