An Analysis of the New LHC Data through the Dispersion Relations

We analyse the tension between the (indirect) measurements of the total cross section, and show the impact of various assumptions on the extraction of the parameters from the elastic scattering amplitude, with a special attention to the total cross section. In particular, the determination of the phase of the elastic scattering amplitude will play an important role, and we shall study it via dispersion relations. We shall also examine the origin of the dependence on momentum transfer of the slopes of the different parts of the scattering amplitude in different models. We shall also give the results of another similar analysis based on a Regge-trajectory approach for the hadron scattering amplitude.

The slope of the hadron spin-flip amplitude and the determination of ρ(s,t)

We re-examine the extraction of ρ(s,t), the ratio of the real part to the imaginary part of the scattering amplitude, and of the spin-flip amplitude, from the existing experimental data in the Coulomb-hadron interference region. We show that it is not possible to find reasonable assumptions about the structure of the scattering amplitude of proton-proton and proton-antiproton elastic scattering at high energy that would lead, in proton-antiproton scattering for 3.8 < p_L <6 GeV/c, to an agreement between data and an analysis based on dispersion relations.

Long-range potential and the fine structure of the diffraction peak

The possibility of oscillations in the differential elastic cross section of hadron scattering at small momentum transfer is studied. It is shown that string-like quark potentials at large distances can lead to such small oscillations, and an analysis of the experimental data at small $|t|$ allows the determination of the parameters of the potential.

New analytic unitarization schemes

We consider two well-known classes of unitarization of Born amplitudes of hadron elastic scattering. The standard class, which saturates at the black disk limit includes the standard eikonal representation, while the other class, which goes beyond the black-disk limit to reach the full unitarity circle, includes the U matrix. It is shown that the basic properties of these schemes are independent of the functional form used for the unitarisation, and that U matrix and eikonal schemes can be extended to have similar properties. A common form of unitarisation is proposed interpolating between both classes. The correspondence with different nonlinear equations are also briefly examined.

The spin-flip amplitude in the impact-parameter representation

The impact-parameter representation of the spin-flip amplitude of hadron elastic scattering is examined in different unitarisation schemes, taking the Born term of the spin-flip amplitude from the Dubna Dynamical Model (DDM). It is shown that the basic properties of the unitarisation schemes are independent of the functional form used for unitarisation but heavily depend on the asymptotic value of the unitarised amplitude.

How precisely will the total cross section be measured at the LHC?

It is very likely that hadronic scattering will enter a new regime at the LHC, as the black-disk limit is reached. This will lead to a severe change in the t dependence of the real part and of the slope of the elastic scattering amplitude, and in turn this may bias the measurement of the total cross section. We examine this issue, and suggest new strategies to test the reliability of the total cross section measurements.

Features of elastic scattering at small t at the LHC

The problems linked with the extraction of the basic parameters of the hadron elastic scattering amplitude at the LHC are explored. It is shown that one should take into account the saturation regime which will lead to new effects at the LHC.

Large-Scale Alignments of Quasar Polarization Vectors: Evidence at Cosmological Scales for Very Light Pseudoscalar Particles Mixing with Photons?

Based on a sample of 355 quasars with significant optical polarization, we found that quasar polarization vectors are not randomly oriented over the sky as naturally expected. The probability that the observed distribution of polarization angles is due to chance is lower than 0.1%. The polarization vectors of the light from quasars are aligned although the sources span huge regions of the sky (~ 1 Gpc). Groups of quasars located along similar lines of sight but at different redshifts (typically z ~ 0.5 and z ~ 1.5) are characterized by different preferred directions of polarization. These characteristics make the observed alignment effect difficult to explain in terms of a local contamination by interstellar polarization in our Galaxy. Interpreted in terms of a cosmological-size effect, we show that the dichroism and birefringence predicted by a mixing between photons and very light pseudoscalar particles within a magnetic field can qualitatively reproduce the observations. We find that circular polarization measurements could help constrain this mechanism.

Analytic properties of different unitarization schemes

The analytic properties of the eikonal and U-matrix unitarization schemes are examined. It is shown that the basic properties of these schemes are identical. Both can fill the full circle of unitarity, and both can lead to standard and non-standard asymptotic relations for the ratio of the elastic cross section to the total cross section. The relation between the phases of the unitarized amplitudes in each scheme is examined, and it is shown that demanding equivalence of the two schemes leads to a bound on the phase in the U-matrix scheme.

Saturation effects in elastic scattering at the LHC

The problems linked to the extraction of the basic parameters of the hadron elastic scattering amplitude at the LHC are explored. The impact of the Black Disk Limit (BDL)$-$ which constitutes a new regime of the scattering processes - on the determination of these values is examined.

Exclusive J/psi and Upsilon hadroproduction and the QCD odderon

We study pp and p\bar p collisions which lead to the exclusive production of J/psi or Upsilon from the pomeron-odderon and the pomeron-photon fusion. We calculate scattering amplitudes of these processes in the lowest order approximation and in the framework of k_T factorization. We present estimates of cross sections for the kinematic conditions of the Tevatron and of the LHC.

Unitarisation of the hard pomeron and black-disk limit at the LHC

Recent models of soft diffraction include a hard pomeron pole besides the usual soft term. Such models violate the black-disk limit around Tevatron energies, so that they need to be supplemented by a unitarisation scheme. Several such schemes are considered in this letter, where we show that they lead to a large uncertainty at the LHC. We also examine the impact of unitarisation on various small-t observables, the slope in t of the elastic cross section, or the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the scattering amplitude, leading to the conclusion that the existence of a hard pomeron in soft scattering may be confirmed by LHC data.

Comparison of different non-linear equations and corresponding unitarization schemes

Different forms of non-linear equations which mimic parton saturation in the non-perturbative regime are examined. These equations lead to corresponding unitarization schemes in the impact parameter representation of the hadron scattering amplitude. It is shown how specific properties of the non-linear equations reflect different features of the diffraction processes.

Saturation effects in diffractive scattering at LHC energies

Unitarization schemes can be reduced to non-linear equations which saturate at small $b$ the evolution of the elastic amplitude with $s$, and which mimic parton saturation in the non-perturbative regime. These equations enable us to study the effect of saturation on total and elastic cross sections for various models, and to evaluate the uncertainties on $σ_{tot}$ and $ρ(s,t)$ at the LHC in the presence of a hard pomeron.

Hadron spin-flip amplitude: an analysis of the new AN data from RHIC

Through a direct analysis of the scattering amplitude, we show that the preliminary measurement of the analysing power AN obtained by the E950 Collaboration at different energies are mainly sensitive to the spin-flip part of the amplitude in which the proton scatters with the carbon 12 nucleus as a whole. The imaginary part of this amplitude is negative, and the real part positive. We give predictions for pL = 600 GeV/c, which depend mainly on the size of the real part of the amplitude.

Saturation regimes at LHC energies

The effects of saturation and unitarization for hadron-hadron scattering at LHC energies are explored in several models. It is shown that different choices of saturation parameters lead to sizable differences in the energy dependence of total cross sections, and to dramatic changes in elastic differential cross sections.

Confinement and cut-off: a model for the pion quark distribution function

The pion structure function is investigated in a simple pseudo-scalar coupling model of pion and constituent quark fields. The imaginary part of the forward Compton scattering amplitude is evaluated. We show that the introduction of non-perturbative effects, linked through a cut-off to the size of the pion, allows the reproduction of important features of the pion quark distribution function.
