The X-ray evolution and geometry of the 2018 outburst of XTE J1810-197

After 15 years, in late 2018, the magnetar XTE J1810-197 underwent a second recorded X-ray outburst event and reactivated as a radio pulsar. We initiated an X-ray monitoring campaign to follow the timing and spectral evolution of the magnetar as its flux decays using Swift, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and NICER observations. During the year-long campaign, the magnetar reproduced similar behaviour to that found for the first outburst, with a factor of two change in its spin-down rate from $\sim7.2\times10^{-12}$ s s$^{-1}$ to $\sim1.5\times10^{-11}$ s s$^{-1}$ after two months. Unique to this outburst, we confirm the peculiar energy-dependent phase shift of the pulse profile. Following the initial outburst, the spectrum of XTE J1810-197 is well-modelled by multiple blackbody components corresponding to a pair of non-concentric, hot thermal caps surrounded by a cooler one, superposed to the colder star surface. We model the energy-dependent pulse profile to constrain the viewing and surface emission geometry and find that the overall geometry of XTE J1810-197 has likely evolved relative to that found for the 2003 event.

Proceedings of the 2nd Iberian Nuclear Astrophysics Meeting on Compact Stars

This volume contains most of the links to the presentations delivered at this international workshop. This meeting was the second in the series following the previous I Encuentro Ibérico de Compstar, held at the University of Coimbra, Portugal in 2010. The main purpose of this meeting was to strengthen the scientific collaboration between the participants of the Iberian and the rest of the southern European branches of the European Nuclear Astrophysics network, formerly, COMPSTAR. This ESF (European Science Foundation) supported network has been crucial in helping to make a broader audience for the the most interesting and relevant research lines being developed currently in Nuclear Astrophysics, especially related to the physics of neutron stars. The program of the meeting was tailored to theoretical descriptions of the physics of neutron stars although some input from experimental observers and other condensed matter and optics areas of interest was also included.

An exact Riemann Solver for multidimensional special relativistic hydrodynamics

We have generalised the exact solution of the Riemann problem in special relativistic hydrodynamics for arbitrary tangential flow velocities. The solution is obtained by solving the jump conditions across shocks plus an ordinary differential equation arising from the self-similarity condition along rarefaction waves, in a similar way as in purely normal flow. The dependence of the solution on the tangential velocities is analysed. This solution has been used to build up an exact Riemann solver implemented in a multidimensional relativistic (Godunov-type) hydro-code.

Neutrinos from Protoneutron Stars

We study the diffusive transport of neutrinos in a newly born neutron star to explore its sensitivity to dense matter properties. Energy and lepton number which are trapped during the catastrophic implosion diffuse out on the time scale of a few tens of seconds. Results for different dense matter models are presented.

Neutrino Opacities at High Density and the Protoneutron Star Evolution

The early evolution of a protoneutron star depends both on the equation of state and neutrino interactions at high density. We identify the important sources of neutrino opacity and through model calculations show that in-medium effects play an important role in determining the neutrino mean free paths. The effects due to Pauli-blocking and many-body correlations due to strong interactions reduce the neutrino cross sections by large factors compared to the case in which these effects are ignored. We discuss these results in the context of neutrino transport in a protoneutron star.
