Link concordance, homology cobordism, and Hirzebruch-type defects from iterated p-covers

We obtain new invariants of topological link concordance and homology cobordism of 3-manifolds from Hirzebruch-type intersection form defects of towers of iterated p-covers. Our invariants can extract geometric information from an arbitrary depth of the derived series of the fundamental group, and can detect torsion which is invisible via signature invariants. Applications illustrating these features include the following: (1) There are infinitely many homology equivalent rational 3-spheres which are indistinguishable via multisignatures, eta-invariants, and L2-signatures but have distinct homology cobordism types. (2) There is an infinite family of 2-torsion (amphichiral) knots, including the figure eight knot, with non-slice iterated Bing doubles; as a special case, we give the first proof of the conjecture that the Bing double of the figure eight knot is not slice. (3) There exist infinitely many torsion elements at any depth of the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration of link concordance.

Structure of the string link concordance group and Hirzebruch-type invariants

We employ Hirzebruch-type invariants obtained from iterated p-covers to investigate concordance of links and string links. We show that the invariants naturally give various group homomorphisms of the string link concordance group into L-groups over number fields. We also obtain homomorphisms of successive quotients of the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration. As an application we show that the kernel of Harvey's $ρ_n$-invariant is large enough to contain a subgroup with infinite rank abelianization, modulo local knots. As another application, we show that recently discovered nontrivial 2-torsion examples of iterated Bing doubles lying at an arbitrary depth of the Cochran-Orr-Teichner filtration are independent over $\Z_2$ as links, in an appropriate sense. We also construct similar examples of infinite order links which are independent over $\Z$.

Injectivity theorems and algebraic closures of groups with coefficients

Recently, Cochran and Harvey defined torsion-free derived series of groups and proved an injectivity theorem on the associated torsion-free quotients. We show that there is a universal construction which extends such an injectivity theorem to an isomorphism theorem. Our result relates injectivity theorems to a certain homology localization of groups. In order to give a concrete combinatorial description and existence proof of the necessary homology localization, we introduce a new version of algebraic closures of groups with coefficients by considering a certain type of equations.

Topological minimal genus and $L^2$-signatures

We obtain new lower bounds of the minimal genus of a locally flat surface representing a 2-dimensional homology class in a topological 4-manifold with boundary, using the von Neumann-Cheeger-Gromov $ρ$-invariant. As an application our results are employed to investigate the slice genus of knots. We illustrate examples with arbitrarily large slice genus for which our lower bound is optimal but all previously known invariants vanish.

The structure of the rational concordance group of knots

We study the group of rational concordance classes of codimension two knots in rational homology spheres. We give a full calculation of its algebraic theory by developing a complete set of new invariants. For computation, we relate these invariants with limiting behaviour of the Artin reciprocity over an infinite tower of number fields and analyze it using tools from algebraic number theory. In higher dimensions it classifies the rational concordance group of knots whose ambient space satisfies a certain cobordism theoretic condition. In particular, we construct infinitely many torsion elements. We show that the structure of the rational concordance group is much more complicated than the integral concordance group from a topological viewpoint. We also investigate the structure peculiar to knots in rational homology 3-spheres. To obtain further nontrivial obstructions in this dimension, we develop a technique of controlling a certain limit of the von Neumann $L^2$-signature invariants.

Knot signature functions are independent

To each unit complex number with positive imaginary part there is defined a Tristram-Levine knot signature function. The set of all such signature functions is linearly independent as a set of functions defined on the set of all knots. The set of averaged signature functions forms a linearly independent set of homomorophisms on the knot concordance group. However, for each unit root of an Alexander polynomial, there is a slice knot with nonvanishing signature at that root and its conjugate, and nowhere else. These results hold for knots in all odd dimension.

Fibred knots and twisted Alexander invariants

We introduce a new algebraic topological technique to detect non-fibred knots in the three sphere using the twisted Alexander invariants. As an application, we show that for any Seifert matrix of a knot with a nontrivial Alexander polynomial, there exist infinitely many non-fibered knots with the given Seifert matrix. We illustrate examples of knots that have trivial Alexander polynomials but do not have twisted Alexander invariants of fibred knots.

Signatures of links in rational homology spheres

A theory of signatures for odd-dimensional links in rational homology spheres is studied via their generalized Seifert surfaces. The jump functions of signatures are shown invariant under appropriately generalized concordance and a special care is given to accommodate 1-dimensional links with mutual linking. Furthermore our concordance theory of links in rational homology spheres remains highly nontrivial after factoring out the contribution from links in integral homology spheres.

Signatures of covering links

The theory of signature invariants of links in rational homology spheres is applied to covering links of homology boundary links. From patterns and Seifert matrices of homology boundary links, an explicit formula is derived to compute signature invariants of their covering links. Using the formula, we produce fused boundary links that are positive mutants of ribbon links but are not concordant to boundary links. We also show that for any finite collection of patterns, there are homology boundary links that are not concordant to any homology boundary links admitting a pattern in the collection.

The effect of mutation on link concordance, 3-manifolds and the Milnor invariants

We study the effect of mutation on link concordance and 3-manifolds. We show that the set of links concordant to sublinks of homology boundary links is not closed under positive mutation. We show that mutation does not preserve homology cobordism classes of 3-manifolds. A significant consequence is that there exist 3-manifolds which have the same quantum SU(2)-invariants but are not homology cobordant. These results are obtained by investigating the effect of mutation on the Milnor invariants, or equivalently the Massey products.
