Type-Safe Is Not Error-Free: A Constrained Decision Head Follows the Option Name, Not the Rubric Bound to It

Typed decision models are built for settings where model outputs are consumed directly by software. Instead of generating free-form text, they return a decision over a predefined set of options. By construction, every output conforms to the required schema. Yet this guarantee does not tell us whether the model interprets the options as intended. We study Jev and two Jev-like models with open weights by changing how option names are assigned to rubrics. Each option consists of an option name and a textual rubric that defines what the option means. We change only which option name is assigned to each rubric; the question, state, rubric wording, and set of option names remain exactly the same. On 1200 workflow decisions with task-specific rubrics, renaming the two options from 0/1 to no/yes changes 70.4 more answers per hundred (95% CI: [67.6, 73.1]) and shifts AUC from .94 to .23, revealing a systematic reversal in the decision ranking rather than simple uncertainty. The same operation has little effect with neutral option names. This pattern holds across all 4 predicates, where the effect is at least 7.4x larger than under the neutral control, and becomes stronger as the number of options increases. The effect also depends on the read-out geometry: a second model family that mean-pools over the full option span flips 4.1x less often. The hosted model exhibits the same behavior: the swap changes AUC from .8146 to .5806 and produces 24x as many answer flips as its test-retest floor. In contrast, replacing the option names with random character strings returns all model families to the neutral-control regime without reducing accuracy. The failure therefore depends on the semantic polarity of the option names rather than on the renaming operation itself. Across all conditions, the type-error rate remains 0%, even when decision accuracy degrades substantially.

From Synthetic to Real: Toward Identity-Consistent Makeup Transfer with Synthetic and Real Data

Makeup transfer aims to apply the makeup style of a reference portrait to a source portrait while preserving identity and background. Early methods formulate this task as unsupervised image-to-image translation, relying on surrogate objectives and often yielding limited performance. Recent diffusion- and flow-based approaches instead exploit synthetic data for supervised training, leading to significant improvements. However, these methods still face two critical challenges: synthetic supervision frequently fails to faithfully preserve identity, and the domain gap between synthetic and real data limits generalization, resulting in degraded performance in complex real-world scenarios. To address these issues, this paper first proposes ConsistentBeauty, a novel data curation pipeline that ensures makeup fidelity and strict identity consistency within the synthesized data. Second, we propose RealBeauty, a synthetic-to-real post-training framework. Beyond supervised learning on curated synthetic data, we further adapt the model to real-world scenarios through reinforcement learning and design novel verifiable rewards tailored to the makeup transfer task. It allows the model to further benefit from real makeup patterns beyond synthetic supervision. In addition, we establish a new diverse benchmark for makeup transfer, covering a wide range of skin tones, ages, genders, poses, and makeup styles, thereby enabling a more comprehensive evaluation of model performance under diverse real-world conditions. Extensive experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple benchmarks and demonstrates clear advantages in identity preservation and performance on complex real-world cases.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Assisted Semantic Communication Systems

Semantic communication, which focuses on conveying the meaning of information rather than exact bit reconstruction, has gained considerable attention in recent years. Meanwhile, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that can achieve high spectral and energy efficiency by dynamically reflecting incident signals through programmable passive components. In this paper, we put forth a semantic communication scheme aided by RIS. Using text transmission as an example, experimental results demonstrate that the RIS-assisted semantic communication system outperforms the point-to-point semantic communication system in terms of bilingual evaluation understudy (BLEU) scores in Rayleigh fading channels, especially at low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regimes. In addition, the RIS-assisted semantic communication system exhibits superior robustness against channel estimation errors compared to its point-to-point counterpart. RIS can improve performance as it provides extra line-of-sight (LoS) paths and enhances signal propagation conditions compared to point-to-point systems.
