Investigating the Complex Velocity Structures within Dense Molecular Cloud Cores with GBT-Argus

We present the first results of high-spectral resolution (0.023 km/s) N$_2$H$^+$ observations of dense gas dynamics at core scales (~0.01 pc) using the recently commissioned Argus instrument on the Green Bank Telescope (GBT). While the fitted linear velocity gradients across the cores measured in our targets nicely agree with the well-known power-law correlation between the specific angular momentum and core size, it is unclear if the observed gradients represent core-scale rotation. In addition, our Argus data reveal detailed and intriguing gas structures in position-velocity (PV) space for all 5 targets studied in this project, which could suggest that the velocity gradients previously observed in many dense cores actually originate from large-scale turbulence or convergent flow compression instead of rigid-body rotation. We also note that there are targets in this study with their star-forming disks nearly perpendicular to the local velocity gradients, which, assuming the velocity gradient represents the direction of rotation, is opposite to what is described by the classical theory of star formation. This provides important insight on the transport of angular momentum within star-forming cores, which is a critical topic on studying protostellar disk formation.

Calibration of Argus and the 4mm Receiver on the GBT

The calibration procedures for data collected for Argus and the 4mm Receiver instruments on the GBT are presented. The measured beam size, aperture efficiency, and main-beam efficiency are derived for the range of observing frequencies (66--116 GHz) within the 3mm atmospheric window. The telescope performs well even at the highest frequencies (>100 GHz). The amount of power in the error pattern of the antenna beam is estimated. Approximately 95% of the total antenna power is contained within 1 degree of the pointed direction. The calibration derived using small sources follows theoretical expectations based on the Ruze equation. In general, bright point source calibrators that are monitored regularly by ALMA can be used to accurately derive the main-beam efficiency of the telescope.

Bayesian estimation of a semiparametric recurrent event model with applications to the penetrance estimation of multiple primary cancers in Li-Fraumeni Syndrome

A common phenomenon in cancer syndromes is for an individual to have multiple primary cancers at different sites during his/her lifetime. Patients with Li-Fraumeni syndrome (LFS), a rare pediatric cancer syndrome mainly caused by germline TP53 mutations, are known to have a higher probability of developing a second primary cancer than those with other cancer syndromes. In this context, it is desirable to model the development of multiple primary cancers to enable better clinical management of LFS. Here, we propose a Bayesian recurrent event model based on a non-homogeneous Poisson process in order to obtain penetrance estimates for multiple primary cancers related to LFS. We employed a family-wise likelihood that facilitates using genetic information inherited through the family pedigree and properly adjusted for the ascertainment bias that was inevitable in studies of rare diseases by using an inverse probability weighting scheme. We applied the proposed method to data on LFS, using a family cohort collected through pediatric sarcoma patients at MD Anderson Cancer Center from 1944 to 1982. Both internal and external validation studies showed that the proposed model provides reliable penetrance estimates for multiple primary cancers in LFS, which, to the best of our knowledge, have not been reported in the LFS literature.
