Optical IRS for Visible Light Communication: Modeling, Design, and Open Issues

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) offers a new and effective approach to resolving the line-of-sight blockage issue in visible light communication (VLC) by enabling redirection of light to bypass obstacles, thereby dramatically enhancing indoor VLC coverage and reliability. This article provides a comprehensive overview of OIRS for VLC, including channel modeling, design techniques, and open issues. First, we present the characteristics of OIRS-reflected channels and introduce two practical models, namely, optics model and association model, which are then compared in terms of applicable conditions, configuration methods, and channel parameters. Next, under the more practically appealing association model, we discuss the main design techniques for OIRS-aided VLC systems, including beam alignment, channel estimation, and OIRS reflection optimization. Finally, open issues are identified to stimulate future research in this area.

Diameter estimates in Kähler geometry II: removing the small degeneracy assumption

In this short note, we remove the small degeneracy assumption in our earlier works [10, 11]. This is achieved by a technical improvement of Corollary 5.1 in [10]. As a consequence, we establish the same geometric estimates for diameter, Green's functions and Sobolev inequalities under an entropy bound for the Kähler metrics, without any small degeneracy assumption.

A Supervised Information Enhanced Multi-Granularity Contrastive Learning Framework for EEG Based Emotion Recognition

This study introduces a novel Supervised Info-enhanced Contrastive Learning framework for EEG based Emotion Recognition (SICLEER). SI-CLEER employs multi-granularity contrastive learning to create robust EEG contextual representations, potentiallyn improving emotion recognition effectiveness. Unlike existing methods solely guided by classification loss, we propose a joint learning model combining self-supervised contrastive learning loss and supervised classification loss. This model optimizes both loss functions, capturing subtle EEG signal differences specific to emotion detection. Extensive experiments demonstrate SI-CLEER's robustness and superior accuracy on the SEED dataset compared to state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, we analyze electrode performance, highlighting the significance of central frontal and temporal brain region EEGs in emotion detection. This study offers an universally applicable approach with potential benefits for diverse EEG classification tasks.

DPOT: Auto-Regressive Denoising Operator Transformer for Large-Scale PDE Pre-Training

Pre-training has been investigated to improve the efficiency and performance of training neural operators in data-scarce settings. However, it is largely in its infancy due to the inherent complexity and diversity, such as long trajectories, multiple scales and varying dimensions of partial differential equations (PDEs) data. In this paper, we present a new auto-regressive denoising pre-training strategy, which allows for more stable and efficient pre-training on PDE data and generalizes to various downstream tasks. Moreover, by designing a flexible and scalable model architecture based on Fourier attention, we can easily scale up the model for large-scale pre-training. We train our PDE foundation model with up to 0.5B parameters on 10+ PDE datasets with more than 100k trajectories. Extensive experiments show that we achieve SOTA on these benchmarks and validate the strong generalizability of our model to significantly enhance performance on diverse downstream PDE tasks like 3D data. Code is available at \url{https://github.com/thu-ml/DPOT}.

Sup-slopes and sub-solutions for fully nonlinear elliptic equations

We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for solving a general class of fully nonlinear elliptic equations on closed Riemannian or hermitian manifolds, including both hessian and hessian quotient equations. It settles an open problem of Li and Urbas. Such a condition is based on an analytic slope invariant analogous to the slope stability and the Nakai-Moishezon criterion in complex geometry. As an application, we solve the non-constant $J$-equation on both hermitian manifolds and singular Kähler spaces.

Channel Estimation for Optical IRS-Assisted VLC System via Spatial Coherence

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) has been considered a promising technology for visible light communication (VLC) by constructing visual line-of-sight propagation paths to address the signal blockage issue. However, the existing works on OIRSs are mostly based on perfect channel state information (CSI), whose acquisition appears to be challenging due to the passive nature of the OIRS. To tackle this challenge, this paper proposes a customized channel estimation algorithm for OIRSs. Specifically, we first unveil the OIRS spatial coherence characteristics and derive the coherence distance in closed form. Based on this property, a spatial sampling-based algorithm is proposed to estimate the OIRS-reflected channel, by dividing the OIRS into multiple subarrays based on the coherence distance and sequentially estimating their associated CSI, followed by an interpolation to retrieve the full CSI. Simulation results validate the derived OIRS spatial coherence and demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed OIRS channel estimation algorithm.

Channel Estimation for Optical Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted VLC System: A Joint Space-Time Sampling Approach

Optical intelligent reflecting surface (OIRS) has attracted increasing attention due to its capability of overcoming signal blockages in visible light communication (VLC), an emerging technology for the next-generation advanced transceivers. However, current works on OIRS predominantly assume known channel state information (CSI), which is essential to practical OIRS configuration. To bridge such a gap, this paper proposes a new and customized channel estimation protocol for OIRSs under the alignment-based channel model. Specifically, we first unveil OIRS spatial and temporal coherence characteristics and derive the coherence distance and the coherence time in closed form. Next, to achieve fast beam alignment over different coherence time, we propose to dynamically tune the rotational angles of the OIRS reflecting elements following a geometric optics-based non-uniform codebook. Given the above beam alignment, we propose an efficient joint space-time sampling-based algorithm to estimate the OIRS channel. In particular, we divide the OIRS into multiple subarrays based on the coherence distance and sequentially estimate their associated CSI, followed by a spacetime interpolation to retrieve full CSI for other non-aligned transceiver antennas. Numerical results validate our theoretical analyses and demonstrate the efficacy of our proposed OIRS channel estimation scheme as compared to other benchmark schemes.

Deep learning for multi-label classification of coral conditions in the Indo-Pacific via underwater photogrammetry

Since coral reef ecosystems face threats from human activities and climate change, coral conservation programs are implemented worldwide. Monitoring coral health provides references for guiding conservation activities. However, current labor-intensive methods result in a backlog of unsorted images, highlighting the need for automated classification. Few studies have simultaneously utilized accurate annotations along with updated algorithms and datasets. This study aimed to create a dataset representing common coral conditions and associated stressors in the Indo-Pacific. Concurrently, it assessed existing classification algorithms and proposed a new multi-label method for automatically detecting coral conditions and extracting ecological information. A dataset containing over 20,000 high-resolution coral images of different health conditions and stressors was constructed based on the field survey. Seven representative deep learning architectures were tested on this dataset, and their performance was quantitatively evaluated using the F1 metric and the match ratio. Based on this evaluation, a new method utilizing the ensemble learning approach was proposed. The proposed method accurately classified coral conditions as healthy, compromised, dead, and rubble; it also identified corresponding stressors, including competition, disease, predation, and physical issues. This method can help develop the coral image archive, guide conservation activities, and provide references for decision-making for reef managers and conservationists. The proposed ensemble learning approach outperforms others on the dataset, showing State-Of-The-Art (SOTA) performance. Future research should improve its generalizability and accuracy to support global coral conservation efforts.

Optical Integrated Sensing and Communication: Architectures, Potentials and Challenges

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is viewed as a crucial component of future mobile networks and has gained much interest in both academia and industry. Similar to the emergence of radio-frequency (RF) ISAC, the integration of free space optical communication and optical sensing yields optical ISAC (O-ISAC), which is regarded as a powerful complement to its RF counterpart. In this article, we first introduce the generalized system structure of O-ISAC, and then elaborate on three advantages of O-ISAC, i.e., increasing communication rate, enhancing sensing precision, and reducing interference. Next, waveform design and resource allocation of O-ISAC are discussed based on pulsed waveform, constant-modulus waveform, and multi-carrier waveform. Furthermore, we put forward future trends and challenges of O-ISAC, which are expected to provide some valuable directions for future research.

Change Detection Between Optical Remote Sensing Imagery and Map Data via Segment Anything Model (SAM)

Unsupervised multimodal change detection is pivotal for time-sensitive tasks and comprehensive multi-temporal Earth monitoring. In this study, we explore unsupervised multimodal change detection between two key remote sensing data sources: optical high-resolution imagery and OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. Specifically, we propose to utilize the vision foundation model Segmentation Anything Model (SAM), for addressing our task. Leveraging SAM's exceptional zero-shot transfer capability, high-quality segmentation maps of optical images can be obtained. Thus, we can directly compare these two heterogeneous data forms in the so-called segmentation domain. We then introduce two strategies for guiding SAM's segmentation process: the 'no-prompt' and 'box/mask prompt' methods. The two strategies are designed to detect land-cover changes in general scenarios and to identify new land-cover objects within existing backgrounds, respectively. Experimental results on three datasets indicate that the proposed approach can achieve more competitive results compared to representative unsupervised multimodal change detection methods.

Maximum principle for recursive optimal control problem of stochastic delay evolution equations

For a class of stochastic delay evolution equations driven by cylindrical $Q$-Wiener process, we study the Pontryagin's maximum principle for the stochastic recursive optimal control problem. The delays are given as moving averages with respect to general finite measures and appear in all the coefficients of the control system. In particular, the final cost can contain the state delay. To derive the main result, we introduce a new form of anticipated backward stochastic evolution equations with terminals acting on an interval as the adjoint equations of the delayed state equations and deploy a proper dual analysis between them. Under certain convex assumption on the coefficient function and the Hamiltonian, we also show sufficiency of the maximum principle.

CscK metrics near the canonical class

Let $X$ be a Kähler manifold with semi-ample canonical bundle $K_X$. It is proved by Jian-Shi-Song that for any Kähler class $γ$, there exists $δ>0$ such that for all $t\in (0, δ)$ there exists a unique cscK metric $g_t$ in $K_X+ t γ$. In this paper, we prove that $\{ (X, g_t) \}_{ t\in (0, δ)} $ have uniformly bounded Kähler potentials, volume forms and diameters. As a consequence, these metric spaces are pre-compact in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense.

Free Space Optical Integrated Sensing and Communication Based on DCO-OFDM: Performance Metrics and Resource Allocation

As one of the six usage scenarios of the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication system, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has garnered considerable attention, and numerous studies have been conducted on radio-frequency (RF)-ISAC. Benefitting from the communication and sensing capabilities of an optical system, free space optical (FSO)-ISAC becomes a potential complement to RF-ISAC. In this paper, a direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) scheme is proposed for FSO-ISAC. To derive the spectral efficiency for communication and the Fisher information for sensing as performance metrics, we model the clipping noise of DCO-OFDM as additive colored Gaussian noise to obtain the expression of the signal-to-noise ratio. Based on the derived performance metrics, joint power allocation problems are formulated for both communication-centric and sensing-centric scenarios. In addition, the non-convex joint optimization problems are decomposed into sub-problems for DC bias and subcarriers, which can be solved by block coordinate descent algorithms. Furthermore, numerical simulations demonstrate the proposed algorithms and reveal the trade-off between communication and sensing functionalities of the OFDM-based FSO-ISAC system.

On a class of stochastic fractional heat equations

For the fractional heat equation $\frac{\partial}{\partial t} u(t,x) = -(-Δ)^{\fracα{2}}u(t,x)+ u(t,x)\dot W(t,x)$ where the covariance function of the Gaussian noise $\dot W$ is defined by the heat kernel, we establish Feynman-Kac formulae for both Stratonovich and Skorohod solutions, along with their respective moments. In particular, we prove that $d<2+α$ is a sufficient and necessary condition for the equation to have a unique square-integrable mild Skorohod solution. One motivation lies in the occurrence of this equation in the study of a random walk in random environment which is generated by a field of independent random walks starting from a Poisson field.

Minimal slopes and bubbling for complex Hessian equations

The existence of smooth solutions to a broad class of complex Hessian equations is related to nonlinear Nakai type criteria on intersection numbers on Kahler manifolds. Such a Nakai criteria can be interpreted as a slope stability condition analogous to the slope stability for Hermitian vector bundles over Kahler manifolds. In the present work, we initiate a program to find canonical solutions to such equations in the unstable case when the Nakai criteria fails. Conjecturally such solutions should arise as limits of natural parabolic flows and should be minimisers of the corresponding moment-map energy functionals. We implement our approach for the J-equation and the deformed Hermitian Yang-Mills equation on surfaces and some examples with symmetry. We prove that there always exist unique canonical solutions to these two equations on Kahler surfaces in the unstable cases. Such canonical solutions with singularities are also shown to be the limits of the corresponding J-flow and the cotangent flow on certain projective bundles. We further present the bubbling phenomena for the J-equation by constructing minimizing sequences of the moment-map energy functionals, whose Gromov-Hausdorff limits are singular algebraic spaces.

A Fully Data-Driven Approach for Realistic Traffic Signal Control Using Offline Reinforcement Learning

The optimization of traffic signal control (TSC) is critical for an efficient transportation system. In recent years, reinforcement learning (RL) techniques have emerged as a popular approach for TSC and show promising results for highly adaptive control. However, existing RL-based methods suffer from notably poor real-world applicability and hardly have any successful deployments. The reasons for such failures are mostly due to the reliance on over-idealized traffic simulators for policy optimization, as well as using unrealistic fine-grained state observations and reward signals that are not directly obtainable from real-world sensors. In this paper, we propose a fully Data-Driven and simulator-free framework for realistic Traffic Signal Control (D2TSC). Specifically, we combine well-established traffic flow theory with machine learning to construct a reward inference model to infer the reward signals from coarse-grained traffic data. With the inferred rewards, we further propose a sample-efficient offline RL method to enable direct signal control policy learning from historical offline datasets of real-world intersections. To evaluate our approach, we collect historical traffic data from a real-world intersection, and develop a highly customized simulation environment that strictly follows real data characteristics. We demonstrate through extensive experiments that our approach achieves superior performance over conventional and offline RL baselines, and also enjoys much better real-world applicability.

Sobolev inequalities on Kähler spaces

We establish a uniform Sobolev inequality for Kähler metrics, which only require an entropy bound and no lower bound on the Ricci curvature. We further extend our Sobolev inequality to singular Kähler metrics on Kähler spaces with normal singularities. This allows us to build a general theory of global geometric analysis on singular Kähler spaces including the spectral theorem, heat kernel estimates, eigenvalue estimates and diameter estimates. Such estimates were only known previously in very special cases such as Bergman metrics. As a consequence, we derive various geometric estimates, such as the diameter estimate and the Sobolev inequality, for Kähler-Einstein currents on projective varieties with definite or vanishing first Chern class.
