EgoAvatar: Egocentric View-Driven and Photorealistic Full-body Avatars

Immersive VR telepresence ideally means being able to interact and communicate with digital avatars that are indistinguishable from and precisely reflect the behaviour of their real counterparts. The core technical challenge is two fold: Creating a digital double that faithfully reflects the real human and tracking the real human solely from egocentric sensing devices that are lightweight and have a low energy consumption, e.g. a single RGB camera. Up to date, no unified solution to this problem exists as recent works solely focus on egocentric motion capture, only model the head, or build avatars from multi-view captures. In this work, we, for the first time in literature, propose a person-specific egocentric telepresence approach, which jointly models the photoreal digital avatar while also driving it from a single egocentric video. We first present a character model that is animatible, i.e. can be solely driven by skeletal motion, while being capable of modeling geometry and appearance. Then, we introduce a personalized egocentric motion capture component, which recovers full-body motion from an egocentric video. Finally, we apply the recovered pose to our character model and perform a test-time mesh refinement such that the geometry faithfully projects onto the egocentric view. To validate our design choices, we propose a new and challenging benchmark, which provides paired egocentric and dense multi-view videos of real humans performing various motions. Our experiments demonstrate a clear step towards egocentric and photoreal telepresence as our method outperforms baselines as well as competing methods. Delving Deep into Engagement Prediction of Short Videos

Understanding and modeling the popularity of User Generated Content (UGC) short videos on social media platforms presents a critical challenge with broad implications for content creators and recommendation systems. This study delves deep into the intricacies of predicting engagement for newly published videos with limited user interactions. Surprisingly, our findings reveal that Mean Opinion Scores from previous video quality assessment datasets do not strongly correlate with video engagement levels. To address this, we introduce a substantial dataset comprising 90,000 real-world UGC short videos from Snapchat. Rather than relying on view count, average watch time, or rate of likes, we propose two metrics: normalized average watch percentage (NAWP) and engagement continuation rate (ECR) to describe the engagement levels of short videos. Comprehensive multi-modal features, including visual content, background music, and text data, are investigated to enhance engagement prediction. With the proposed dataset and two key metrics, our method demonstrates its ability to predict engagements of short videos purely from video content.

E2CL: Exploration-based Error Correction Learning for Embodied Agents

Language models are exhibiting increasing capability in knowledge utilization and reasoning. However, when applied as agents in embodied environments, they often suffer from misalignment between their intrinsic knowledge and environmental knowledge, leading to infeasible actions. Traditional environment alignment methods, such as supervised learning on expert trajectories and reinforcement learning, encounter limitations in covering environmental knowledge and achieving efficient convergence, respectively. Inspired by human learning, we propose Exploration-based Error Correction Learning (E2CL), a novel framework that leverages exploration-induced errors and environmental feedback to enhance environment alignment for embodied agents. E2CL incorporates teacher-guided and teacher-free explorations to gather environmental feedback and correct erroneous actions. The agent learns to provide feedback and self-correct, thereby enhancing its adaptability to target environments. Extensive experiments in the VirtualHome environment demonstrate that E2CL-trained agents outperform those trained by baseline methods and exhibit superior self-correction capabilities.

Pseudo-Riemannian metric: a new perspective on the quantum realm

As a fundamental concept in condensed matter physics, quantum geometry within the Riemannian metric elucidates various exotic phenomena, including the Hall effects driven by Berry curvature and quantum metric. In this work, we propose novel quantum geometries within a pseudo-Riemannian framework to explore unique characteristic of quantum matter. By defining distinct distances on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and incorporating spin degree of freedom, we introduce the Pauli quantum geometric tensor. The imaginary part of this tensor corresponds to the Pauli Berry curvature, leading to the discovery a novel quantum phase: Pauli semimetal in PT-symmetric systems. This phase, characterized by the topological Pauli Chern number, manifests as a two-dimensional Pauli Chern insulator with helical edge states. These topological phases, uniquely revealed by the Pauli-Riemannian metric, go beyond the familiar Riemannian metric, where Berry curvature vanishes due to PT-symmetry. Pauli Chern number can classify helical topological insulator with or without time reversal symmetry. Pseudo-Riemannian metrics offer new insights into quantum materials and extend the scope of quantum geometry.

On $r$-wise $t$-intersecting uniform families

We consider families, $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set. For integers $r\geq 2$, $t\geq 1$, $\mathcal{F}$ is called $r$-wise $t$-intersecting if any $r$ of its members have at least $t$ elements in common. The most natural construction of such a family is the full $t$-star, consisting of all $k$-sets containing a fixed $t$-set. In the case $r=2$ the Exact Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem shows that the full $t$-star is largest if $n\geq (t+1)(k-t+1)$. In the present paper, we prove that for $n\geq (2.5t)^{1/(r-1)}(k-t)+k$, the full $t$-star is largest in case of $r\geq 3$. Examples show that the exponent $\frac{1}{r-1}$ is best possible. This represents a considerable improvement on a recent result of Balogh and Linz.

Multimodal Trajectory Prediction for Autonomous Driving on Unstructured Roads using Deep Convolutional Network

Recently, the application of autonomous driving in open-pit mining has garnered increasing attention for achieving safe and efficient mineral transportation. Compared to urban structured roads, unstructured roads in mining sites have uneven boundaries and lack clearly defined lane markings. This leads to a lack of sufficient constraint information for predicting the trajectories of other human-driven vehicles, resulting in higher uncertainty in trajectory prediction problems. A method is proposed to predict multiple possible trajectories and their probabilities of the target vehicle. The surrounding environment and historical trajectories of the target vehicle are encoded as a rasterized image, which is used as input to our deep convolutional network to predict the target vehicle's multiple possible trajectories. The method underwent offline testing on a dataset specifically designed for autonomous driving scenarios in open-pit mining and was compared and evaluated against physics-based method. The open-source code and data are available at https://github.com/LLsxyc/mine_motion_prediction.git

GRB 240529A: A Tale of Two Shocks

Thanks to the rapidly increasing time-domain facilities, we are entering a golden era of research on gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). In this Letter, we report our observations of GRB 240529A with the Burst Optical Observer and Transient Exploring System, the 1.5-meter telescope at Observatorio Sierra Nevada, the 2.5-meter Wide Field Survey Telescope of China, the Large Binocular Telescope, and the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo. The prompt emission of GRB 240529A shows two comparable energetic episodes separated by a quiescence time of roughly 400 s. Combining all available data on the GRB Coordinates Network, we reveal the simultaneous apparent X-ray plateau and optical re-brightening around $10^3-10^4$ s after the burst. Rather than the energy injection from the magnetar as widely invoked for similar GRBs, the multi-wavelength emissions could be better explained as two shocks launched from the central engine separately. The optical peak time and our numerical modeling suggest that the initial bulk Lorentz factor of the later shock is roughly 50, which indicates that the later jet should be accretion-driven and have a higher mass loading than a typical one. The quiescence time between the two prompt emission episodes may be caused by the transition between different accretion states of a central magnetar or black hole, or the fall-back accretion process. A sample of similar bursts with multiple emission episodes in the prompt phase and sufficient follow-up could help to probe the underlying physics of GRB central engines.

Gauge invariant quantum transport theory for non-Hermitian systems

Gauge invariance is a fundamental principle that must be preserved in quantum transport. However, when a complex potential is incorporated into the Hamiltonian, we find that the current described by the well-established Landauer-B$\ddot{u}$ttiker formula no longer satisfies gauge invariance. Using the non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method, we derive a current expression for a multi-probe system that includes a complex potential in the scattering region. We observe that an additional current term arises compared to the Landauer-B$\ddot{u}$ttiker formula, which leads to a violation of gauge invariance. To address this, we propose two phenomenological methods for redistributing the conductance to restore gauge invariance in non-Hermitian systems. These methods are applied to various trivial and nontrivial non-Hermitian quantum states, confirming the necessity of gauge-invariant treatments in non-Hermitian systems.

Quantitative periodic homogenization for symmetric non-local stable-like operators

Homogenization for non-local operators in periodic environments has been studied intensively. So far, these works are mainly devoted to the qualitative results, that is, to determine explicitly the operators in the limit. To the best of authors' knowledge, there is no result concerning the convergence rates of the homogenization for stable-like operators in periodic environments. In this paper, we establish a quantitative homogenization result for symmetric $α$-stable-like operators on $\R^d$ with periodic coefficients. In particular, we show that the convergence rate for the solutions of associated Dirichlet problems on a bounded domain $D$ is of order $$ \varepsilon^{(2-α)/2}\I_{\{α\in (1,2)\}}+\varepsilon^{α/2}\I_{\{α\in (0,1)\}}+\varepsilon^{1/2}|\log \e|^2\I_{\{α=1\}}, $$ while, when the solution to the equation in the limit is in $C^2_c(D)$, the convergence rate becomes $$ \varepsilon^{2-α}\I_{\{α\in (1,2)\}}+\varepsilon^α\I_{\{α\in (0,1)\}}+\varepsilon |\log \e|^2\I_{\{α=1\}}. $$ This indicates that the boundary decay behaviors of the solution to the equation in the limit affects the convergence rate in the homogenization.

Systematic discovery of new nano-scale metastable intermetallic eutectic phases in laser rapid solidified Aluminum-Germanium alloy

Laser surface remelting of as-cast Al-Ge eutectic alloy is shown to produce ultrafine lamellar eutectic morphology with interlamellar spacing refined up to ~60 nm and composed of FCC Al solid solution and unusual AlxGey intermetallic phases that do not form during near-equilibrium solidification. The microstructures are characterized and analyzed using a combination of selected area electron diffraction, high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to obtain high-resolution elemental maps, and atomistic modeling using density functional theory followed by atomic-scale image simulation. Depending on the local solidification conditions, the crystallography of the AlxGey intermetallic phases in the eutectic microstructure is either monoclinic (C 2/c) or monoclinic (P 21), with high densities of defects in both cases. This is in sharp contrast to the as-cast alloys that showed nominally pure Al and Ge phases with significant solute partitioning and equilibrium FCC and diamond cubic crystal structures, respectively. Corresponding kinetic phase diagrams are proposed to interpret the evolution of nano-lamellar eutectic morphologies with equilibrium Al and metastable AlxGey phases, and to explain increased solid solubility in the Al phases manifested by precipitation of ultrafine clusters of Ge. The reasons for the formation of these metastable eutectics under laser rapid solidification are discussed from the perspective of the competitive growth criterion.

Analytic NNLO QCD corrections to top quark pair production in electron-positron collisions

We present the analytic total cross section of top quark pair production in electron-positron annihilation at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). By utilizing the optical theorem, the NNLO corrections are related to the imaginary parts of three-loop self-energy Feynman diagrams, of which the master integrals are calculated with canonical differential equations. The analytic results for the NNLO corrections are expressed in terms of multiple polylogarithms as well as elliptic functions. We discuss the asymptotic expansions near the threshold and in the high energy limit in detail. Numerical results are provided for the total cross section of top quark pair production at future lepton colliders.

Quantum intrinsic ${\cal T}$-odd spin Hall effect in altermagnets

Drude weight, historically associated with the longitudinal Drude conductivity, can be generalized to describe the transverse or Hall component of the extrinsic conductivity tensor. In particular, transverse Drude weights, such as band geometric quantities Berry curvature dipole and spin vorticity, manifest themselves through the \textit{extrinsic} second-order nonlinear Hall effect and \textit{extrinsic} linear spin Hall effect (SHE) in diffusive transport, respectively. In this work, we uncover a new class of intrinsic Hall effects in quantum transport regime, termed as quantum intrinsic Hall effect (QIHE), which is the manifestation of system symmetry through intrinsic transport phenomena. For a given Hamiltonian, its transport characteristics can be revealed either intrinsically through QIHE in ballistic regime or extrinsically via the transverse Drude weight in diffusive transport, where both intrinsic and extrinsic effects share the same salient transport features governed by symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The physical origin of QIHE is attributed to quantum boundary scattering of the measurement setup that respects the system symmetry, as exemplified by the contact resistance of a two-terminal ballistic conductor. We demonstrate our finding by studying the quantum ${\cal T}$-odd ($\mathcal{T}$, time-reversal) SHE in altermagnets. Our work paves a way towards the quantum transport manifestation of band geometric characteristics.

Hi-Gen: Generative Retrieval For Large-Scale Personalized E-commerce Search

Leveraging generative retrieval (GR) techniques to enhance search systems is an emerging methodology that has shown promising results in recent years. In GR, a text-to-text model maps string queries directly to relevant document identifiers (docIDs), dramatically simplifying the retrieval process. However, when applying most GR models in large-scale E-commerce for personalized item search, we must face two key problems in encoding and decoding. (1) Existing docID generation methods ignore the encoding of efficiency information, which is critical in E-commerce. (2) The positional information is important in decoding docIDs, while prior studies have not adequately discriminated the significance of positional information or well exploited the inherent interrelation among these positions. To overcome these problems, we introduce an efficient Hierarchical encoding-decoding Generative retrieval method (Hi-Gen) for large-scale personalized E-commerce search systems. Specifically, we first design a representation learning model using metric learning to learn discriminative feature representations of items to capture semantic relevance and efficiency information. Then, we propose a category-guided hierarchical clustering scheme that makes full use of the semantic and efficiency information of items to facilitate docID generation. Finally, we design a position-aware loss to discriminate the importance of positions and mine the inherent interrelation between different tokens at the same position. This loss boosts the performance of the language model used in the decoding stage. Besides, we propose two variants of Hi-Gen (Hi-Gen-I2I and Hi-Gen-Cluster) to support online real-time large-scale recall in the online serving process. Hi-Gen gets 3.30% and 4.62% improvements over SOTA for Recall@1 on the public and industry datasets, respectively.

Uniform large deviation principles for SDEs under locally weak monotonicity conditions

In this paper, we provide a criterion on uniform large deviation principles (ULDP) for stochastic differential equations under locally weak monotone conditions and Lyapunov conditions, which can be applied to stochastic systems with coefficients of polynomial growth and possible degenerate driving noises, including the stochastic Hamiltonian systems. The weak convergence method plays an important role in obtaining the ULDP. This result extends the scope of applications of the main theorem in \cite{WYZZ}.

Tripartite entanglement and tripartite steering in three-qubit pure states induced by vacuum--one-photon superpositions

Utilizing a tritter with variable parameter $T$ and induced by vacuum--one-photon superpositions $\left\vert 0\right\rangle +α\left\vert 1\right\rangle $ with $α=\left\vert α\right\vert e^{iϕ}$, we propose a scheme to prepare a class of three-qubit pure states. These states take the form of $\left\vert ψ\right\rangle _{123}=c_{0}\left\vert 000\right\rangle +c_{1}\left\vert 100\right\rangle +c_{2}\left\vert 010\right\rangle +c_{3}\left\vert 001\right\rangle $. The coefficients ($c_{0}$, $c_{1}$, $c_{2}$, and $c_{3}$) can be manipulated through interaction parameters ($\left\vert α\right\vert $, $ϕ$, and $T$). In line with Xie and Eberly's work[Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 040403 (2021)], we investigate the genuine tripartite entanglement for $\left\vert ψ\right\rangle _{123}$ by using the measure of concurrence fill. Drawing on Hao \textit{et al.}'s research [Phys. Rev. Lett. 128, 120402 (2021)], we examine tripartite steering for $\left\vert ψ\right\rangle _{123}$ under certain measurements based on the uncertainty relations criterion. We identify nine potential configurations exhibiting varying steerability across different parameter spaces. It is important to highlight that, while the state $\left\vert ψ\right\rangle _{123}$ exhibits entanglement, steering remains unattainable in a substantial portion of the parameter space.

RuleAlign: Making Large Language Models Better Physicians with Diagnostic Rule Alignment

Large Language Models (LLMs) like GPT-4, MedPaLM-2, and Med-Gemini achieve performance competitively with human experts across various medical benchmarks. However, they still face challenges in making professional diagnoses akin to physicians, particularly in efficiently gathering patient information and reasoning the final diagnosis. To this end, we introduce the RuleAlign framework, designed to align LLMs with specific diagnostic rules. We develop a medical dialogue dataset comprising rule-based communications between patients and physicians and design an alignment learning approach through preference learning. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. We hope that our work can serve as an inspiration for exploring the potential of LLMs as AI physicians.

MS$^3$D: A RG Flow-Based Regularization for GAN Training with Limited Data

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have made impressive advances in image generation, but they often require large-scale training data to avoid degradation caused by discriminator overfitting. To tackle this issue, we investigate the challenge of training GANs with limited data, and propose a novel regularization method based on the idea of renormalization group (RG) in physics. We observe that in the limited data setting, the gradient pattern that the generator obtains from the discriminator becomes more aggregated over time. In RG context, this aggregated pattern exhibits a high discrepancy from its coarse-grained versions, which implies a high-capacity and sensitive system, prone to overfitting and collapse. To address this problem, we introduce a \textbf{m}ulti-\textbf{s}cale \textbf{s}tructural \textbf{s}elf-\textbf{d}issimilarity (MS$^3$D) regularization, which constrains the gradient field to have a consistent pattern across different scales, thereby fostering a more redundant and robust system. We show that our method can effectively enhance the performance and stability of GANs under limited data scenarios, and even allow them to generate high-quality images with very few data.

Multi-periodicity dependency Transformer based on spectrum offset for radio frequency fingerprint identification

Radio Frequency Fingerprint Identification (RFFI) has emerged as a pivotal task for reliable device authentication. Despite advancements in RFFI methods, background noise and intentional modulation features result in weak energy and subtle differences in the RFF features. These challenges diminish the capability of RFFI methods in feature representation, complicating the effective identification of device identities. This paper proposes a novel Multi-Periodicity Dependency Transformer (MPDFormer) to address these challenges. The MPDFormer employs a spectrum offset-based periodic embedding representation to augment the discrepency of intrinsic features. We delve into the intricacies of the periodicity-dependency attention mechanism, integrating both inter-period and intra-period attention mechanisms. This mechanism facilitates the extraction of both long and short-range periodicity-dependency features , accentuating the feature distinction whilst concurrently attenuating the perturbations caused by background noise and weak-periodicity features. Empirical results demonstrate MPDFormer's superiority over established baseline methods, achieving a 0.07s inference time on NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX.
