FFPN: Fourier Feature Pyramid Network for Ultrasound Image Segmentation

Ultrasound (US) image segmentation is an active research area that requires real-time and highly accurate analysis in many scenarios. The detect-to-segment (DTS) frameworks have been recently proposed to balance accuracy and efficiency. However, existing approaches may suffer from inadequate contour encoding or fail to effectively leverage the encoded results. In this paper, we introduce a novel Fourier-anchor-based DTS framework called Fourier Feature Pyramid Network (FFPN) to address the aforementioned issues. The contributions of this paper are two fold. First, the FFPN utilizes Fourier Descriptors to adequately encode contours. Specifically, it maps Fourier series with similar amplitudes and frequencies into the same layer of the feature map, thereby effectively utilizing the encoded Fourier information. Second, we propose a Contour Sampling Refinement (CSR) module based on the contour proposals and refined features produced by the FFPN. This module extracts rich features around the predicted contours to further capture detailed information and refine the contours. Extensive experimental results on three large and challenging datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms other DTS methods in terms of accuracy and efficiency. Furthermore, our framework can generalize well to other detection or segmentation tasks.

Model predictive control strategy in waked wind farms for optimal fatigue loads

With the rapid growth of wind power penetration, wind farms (WFs) are required to implement frequency regulation that active power control to track a given power reference. Due to the wake interaction of the wind turbines (WTs), there is more than one solution to distributing power reference among the operating WTs, which can be exploited as an optimization problem for the second goal, such as fatigue load alleviation. In this paper, a closed-loop model predictive controller is developed that minimizes the wind farm tracking errors, the dynamical fatigue load, and and the load equalization. The controller is evaluated in a mediumfidelity model. A 64 WTs simulation case study is used to demonstrate the control performance for different penalty factor settings. The results indicated the WF can alleviate dynamical fatigue load and have no significant impact on power tracking. However, the uneven load distribution in the wind turbine system poses challenges for maintenance. By adding a trade-off between the load equalization and dynamical fatigue load, the load differences between WTs are significantly reduced, while the dynamical fatigue load slightly increases when selecting a proper penalty factor.

Counterfactual communication without a trace in the transmission channel

We report an experimental realization of a modified counterfactual communication protocol that eliminates the dominant environmental trace left by photons passing through the transmission channel. Compared to Wheeler's criterion for inferring past particle paths, as used in prior protocols, our trace criterion provide stronger support for the claim of the counterfactuality of the communication. We verify the lack of trace left by transmitted photons via tagging the propagation arms of an interferometric device by distinct frequency-shifts and finding that the collected photons have no frequency shift which corresponds to the transmission channel. As a proof of principle, we counterfactually transfer a quick response code image with sufficient fidelity to be scanned with a cell phone.

Damping for fractional wave equations and applications to water waves

Motivated by numerically modeling surface waves for inviscid Euler equations, we analyze linear models for damped water waves and establish decay properties for the energy for sufficiently regular initial configurations. Our findings give the explicit decay rates for the energy, but do not address reflection/transmission of waves at the interface of the damping. Still for a subset of the models considered, this represents the first result proving the decay of the energy of the surface wave models.

Group Pose: A Simple Baseline for End-to-End Multi-person Pose Estimation

In this paper, we study the problem of end-to-end multi-person pose estimation. State-of-the-art solutions adopt the DETR-like framework, and mainly develop the complex decoder, e.g., regarding pose estimation as keypoint box detection and combining with human detection in ED-Pose, hierarchically predicting with pose decoder and joint (keypoint) decoder in PETR. We present a simple yet effective transformer approach, named Group Pose. We simply regard $K$-keypoint pose estimation as predicting a set of $N\times K$ keypoint positions, each from a keypoint query, as well as representing each pose with an instance query for scoring $N$ pose predictions. Motivated by the intuition that the interaction, among across-instance queries of different types, is not directly helpful, we make a simple modification to decoder self-attention. We replace single self-attention over all the $N\times(K+1)$ queries with two subsequent group self-attentions: (i) $N$ within-instance self-attention, with each over $K$ keypoint queries and one instance query, and (ii) $(K+1)$ same-type across-instance self-attention, each over $N$ queries of the same type. The resulting decoder removes the interaction among across-instance type-different queries, easing the optimization and thus improving the performance. Experimental results on MS COCO and CrowdPose show that our approach without human box supervision is superior to previous methods with complex decoders, and even is slightly better than ED-Pose that uses human box supervision. $\href{https://github.com/Michel-liu/GroupPose-Paddle}{\rm Paddle}$ and $\href{https://github.com/Michel-liu/GroupPose}{\rm PyTorch}$ code are available.

Suspended AlGaAs-Integrated Nonlinear Photonics

AlGaAs is a promising integrated nonlinear photonics material with enormous optical nonlinearity and high refractive index. Nevertheless, presently AlGaAs microring resonators exhibiting high quality factors and tight optical confinement rely predominantly on wafer bonding techniques, which entail an intricate fabrication process. Here, we present suspended AlGaAs waveguides and resonators as a viable platform for high efficiency integrated nonlinear photonics. The suspended microring resonator formed by combined plasma dry etching and chemical wet etching exhibits an intrinsic quality factor Q of 2.1*106, and Kerr comb generation with milliwatt level threshold is recorded. Our demonstration opens up a new prospect for employing AlGaAs devices in integrated nonlinear photonics.

Learning Implicit Entity-object Relations by Bidirectional Generative Alignment for Multimodal NER

The challenge posed by multimodal named entity recognition (MNER) is mainly two-fold: (1) bridging the semantic gap between text and image and (2) matching the entity with its associated object in image. Existing methods fail to capture the implicit entity-object relations, due to the lack of corresponding annotation. In this paper, we propose a bidirectional generative alignment method named BGA-MNER to tackle these issues. Our BGA-MNER consists of \texttt{image2text} and \texttt{text2image} generation with respect to entity-salient content in two modalities. It jointly optimizes the bidirectional reconstruction objectives, leading to aligning the implicit entity-object relations under such direct and powerful constraints. Furthermore, image-text pairs usually contain unmatched components which are noisy for generation. A stage-refined context sampler is proposed to extract the matched cross-modal content for generation. Extensive experiments on two benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance without image input during inference.

ZRIGF: An Innovative Multimodal Framework for Zero-Resource Image-Grounded Dialogue Generation

Image-grounded dialogue systems benefit greatly from integrating visual information, resulting in high-quality response generation. However, current models struggle to effectively utilize such information in zero-resource scenarios, mainly due to the disparity between image and text modalities. To overcome this challenge, we propose an innovative multimodal framework, called ZRIGF, which assimilates image-grounded information for dialogue generation in zero-resource situations. ZRIGF implements a two-stage learning strategy, comprising contrastive pre-training and generative pre-training. Contrastive pre-training includes a text-image matching module that maps images and texts into a unified encoded vector space, along with a text-assisted masked image modeling module that preserves pre-training visual features and fosters further multimodal feature alignment. Generative pre-training employs a multimodal fusion module and an information transfer module to produce insightful responses based on harmonized multimodal representations. Comprehensive experiments conducted on both text-based and image-grounded dialogue datasets demonstrate ZRIGF's efficacy in generating contextually pertinent and informative responses. Furthermore, we adopt a fully zero-resource scenario in the image-grounded dialogue dataset to demonstrate our framework's robust generalization capabilities in novel domains. Coupled three-mode squeezed vacuum: Gaussian steering and remote generation of Wigner negativity

Multipartite Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) steering and multimode quantum squeezing are essential resources for various quantum applications. The paper focuses on studying a coupled three-mode squeezed vacuum (C3MSV), which is a typical multimode squeezed Gaussian state and will exhibit peculiar steering property. Using the technique of integration within ordered products, we give the normal-ordering form for the coupled three-mode squeezing operator and derive the general analytical expressions of the statistical quantities for the C3MSV. Under Gaussian measurements, we analyze all bipartite Gaussian steerings (including no steering, one-way steering and two-way steering) in details and study the monogamy relations for the C3MSV. Then, we study the decoherence of all these steerings in noisy channels and find that sudden death will happen in a certain threshold time. Through the steerings shared in the C3MSV, we propose conceptual (and ideal) schemes of remotely generating Wigner negativity (WN) by performing appropriate photon subtraction(s) in the local position. Our obtained results may lay a solid theoretical foundation for a future practical study. We also believe that the C3MSV will be one of good candidate resources in future quantum protocols.

Enabling plastic co-deformation of disparate phases in a laser rapid solidified Sr-modified Al-Si eutectic through partial-dislocation-mediated-plasticity in Si

Nano-scale eutectics, such as rapid solidified Al-Si, exhibit enhanced yield strength and strain hardening but plasticity is limited by cracking of the hard phase (Si). Mechanisms that may suppress cracking and enable plastic co-deformation of soft and hard phases are key to maximizing plasticity in these high-strength microstructures. Using a combination of laser rapid solidification and chemical (Sr) modification, we have synthesized fully eutectic Al-Si microstructures with heavily twinned Si nano-fibers that exhibit high hardness up to 2.9 GPa, and high compressive flow strength (~840 MPa) with stable plastic flow to ~26% plastic strain. After deformation, the hard Si(Sr) fibers did not exhibit cracks, but a high density of stacking faults were observed in the Si(Sr) fibers suggesting partial dislocation mediated plasticity. Mechanisms for suppression of cracking and activation of partial dislocations in Si deformed at room temperature are discussed in terms of nanoscale fiber geometry with reduced aspect ratio and lowering of the Peierls barrier in chemically-modified, nano-twinned Si fibers.

Dirac operators with torsion, spectral Einstein functionals and the noncommutative residue

Recently Dabrowski etc. \cite{DL} obtained the metric and Einstein functionals by two vector fields and Laplace-type operators over vector bundles, giving an interesting example of the spinor connection and square of the Dirac operator. Pf$\ddot{a}$ffle and Stephan \cite{PS1} considered orthogonal connections with arbitrary torsion on compact Riemannian manifolds and computed the spectral action. Motivated by the spectral functionals and Dirac operators with torsion, we give some new spectral functionals which is the extension of spectral functionals to the noncommutative realm with torsion, and we relate them to the noncommutative residue for manifolds with boundary. Our method of producing these spectral functionals is the noncommutative residue and Dirac operators with torsion.

Equivariant Bismut Laplacian and spectral Einstein functional

This paper aims to provide an explicit computation of the equivariant noncommutative residue density of which yield the metric and Einstein tensors on even-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. A considerable contribution of this paper is the development of the spectral Einstein functionals by two vector fields and the equivariant Bismut Laplacian over spinor bundles. We prove the equivariant Dabrowski-Sitarz-Zalecki type theorems for lower dimensional spin manifolds with (or without) boundary.

A stability result for $C_{2k+1}$-free graphs

A graph $G$ is called $C_{2k+1}$-free if it does not contain any cycle of length $2k+1$. In 1981, Haggkvist, Faudree and Schelp showed that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with more than $\frac{(n-1)^2}{4}+1$ edges is bipartite. In this paper, we extend their result and show that for $1\leq t\leq 2k-2$ and $n\geq 318t^2k$, every $n$-vertex $C_{2k+1}$-free graph with more than $\frac{(n-t-1)^2}{4}+\binom{t+2}{2}$ edges can be made bipartite by either deleting at most $t-1$ vertices or deleting at most $\binom{\lfloor\frac{t+2}{2}\rfloor}{2}+\binom{\lceil\frac{t+2}{2}\rceil}{2}-1$ edges. The construction shows that this is best possible.

Stroke Extraction of Chinese Character Based on Deep Structure Deformable Image Registration

Stroke extraction of Chinese characters plays an important role in the field of character recognition and generation. The most existing character stroke extraction methods focus on image morphological features. These methods usually lead to errors of cross strokes extraction and stroke matching due to rarely using stroke semantics and prior information. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based character stroke extraction method that takes semantic features and prior information of strokes into consideration. This method consists of three parts: image registration-based stroke registration that establishes the rough registration of the reference strokes and the target as prior information; image semantic segmentation-based stroke segmentation that preliminarily separates target strokes into seven categories; and high-precision extraction of single strokes. In the stroke registration, we propose a structure deformable image registration network to achieve structure-deformable transformation while maintaining the stable morphology of single strokes for character images with complex structures. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, we construct two datasets respectively for calligraphy characters and regular handwriting characters. The experimental results show that our method strongly outperforms the baselines. Code is available at https://github.com/MengLi-l1/StrokeExtraction.

Learning Structure-Guided Diffusion Model for 2D Human Pose Estimation

One of the mainstream schemes for 2D human pose estimation (HPE) is learning keypoints heatmaps by a neural network. Existing methods typically improve the quality of heatmaps by customized architectures, such as high-resolution representation and vision Transformers. In this paper, we propose \textbf{DiffusionPose}, a new scheme that formulates 2D HPE as a keypoints heatmaps generation problem from noised heatmaps. During training, the keypoints are diffused to random distribution by adding noises and the diffusion model learns to recover ground-truth heatmaps from noised heatmaps with respect to conditions constructed by image feature. During inference, the diffusion model generates heatmaps from initialized heatmaps in a progressive denoising way. Moreover, we further explore improving the performance of DiffusionPose with conditions from human structural information. Extensive experiments show the prowess of our DiffusionPose, with improvements of 1.6, 1.2, and 1.2 mAP on widely-used COCO, CrowdPose, and AI Challenge datasets, respectively.

Quantitative stochastic homogenization for random conductance models with stable-like jumps

We consider random conductance models with long range jumps on $\Z^d$, where the one-step transition probability from $x$ to $y$ is proportional to $w_{x,y}|x-y|^{-d-α}$ with $α\in (0,2)$. Assume that $\{w_{x,y}\}_{(x,y)\in E}$ are independent, identically distributed and uniformly bounded non-negative random variables with $\Ee w_{x,y}=1$, where $E$ is the set of all unordered pairs on $\Z^d$. We obtain a quantitative version of stochastic homogenization for these random walks, with explicit polynomial rates up to logarithmic corrections.

Foliated asymptotically safe gravity in the fluctuation approach

The gravitational asymptotic safety program envisions a high-energy completion of gravity based on a non-Gaussian renormalization group fixed point. A key step in this program is the transition from Euclidean to Lorentzian signature spacetimes. One way to address this challenge is to formulate the quantum theory based on the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner decomposition of the metric field. This equips the Euclidean spacetime with a preferred direction which may serve as the time-direction in the Lorentzian setting. In this work we use the Wetterich equation in order to compute the renormalization group flow of the graviton two-point function. The resulting beta functions possess a non-Gaussian renormalization group fixed point suitable for rendering the theory asymptotically safe. The phase diagram underlying the flow of the two-point function is governed by the interplay between this non-Gaussian fixed point, the Gaussian fixed point, and an infrared fixed point. The latter ensures that the renormalized squared graviton mass cannot take negative values. These results are in qualitative agreement with fluctuation computations carried out in the covariant setting. We take this as non-trivial evidence that the asymptotic safety mechanism remains intact when considering quantum gravity on spacetimes carrying a foliation structure. Technically, our work constitutes the first fluctuation computation carried out within the ADM-framework. Therefore, we also provide a detailed discussion of the conceptual framework, highlighting the elements which differ from fluctuation computations in the covariant setting.

Image Harmonization with Diffusion Model

Image composition in image editing involves merging a foreground image with a background image to create a composite. Inconsistent lighting conditions between the foreground and background often result in unrealistic composites. Image harmonization addresses this challenge by adjusting illumination and color to achieve visually appealing and consistent outputs. In this paper, we present a novel approach for image harmonization by leveraging diffusion models. We conduct a comparative analysis of two conditional diffusion models, namely Classifier-Guidance and Classifier-Free. Our focus is on addressing the challenge of adjusting illumination and color in foreground images to create visually appealing outputs that seamlessly blend with the background. Through this research, we establish a solid groundwork for future investigations in the realm of diffusion model-based image harmonization.
