Geometry-Based Stochastic Line-of-Sight Probability Model for A2G Channels under Urban Scenarios

Line-of-sight (LoS) path is essential for the reliability of air-to-ground (A2G) communications, but the existence of LoS path is difficult to predict due to random obstacles on the ground. Based on the statistical geographic information and Fresnel clearance zone, a general stochastic LoS probability model for three-dimensional (3D) A2G channels under urban scenarios is developed. By considering the factors, i.e., building height distribution, building width, building space, carrier frequency, and transceiver's heights, the proposed model is suitable for different frequencies and altitudes. Moreover, in order to get a closed-form expression and reduce the computational complexity, an approximate parametric model is also built with the machine-learning (ML) method to estimate model parameters. The simulation results show that the proposed model has good consistency with existing models at the low altitude. When the altitude increases, it has better performance by comparing with that of the ray-tracing Monte-Carlo simulation data. The analytical results of proposed model are helpful for the channel modeling and performance analysis such as cell coverage, outage probability, and bit error rate in A2G communications.

Stimuli-Aware Visual Emotion Analysis

Visual emotion analysis (VEA) has attracted great attention recently, due to the increasing tendency of expressing and understanding emotions through images on social networks. Different from traditional vision tasks, VEA is inherently more challenging since it involves a much higher level of complexity and ambiguity in human cognitive process. Most of the existing methods adopt deep learning techniques to extract general features from the whole image, disregarding the specific features evoked by various emotional stimuli. Inspired by the \textit{Stimuli-Organism-Response (S-O-R)} emotion model in psychological theory, we proposed a stimuli-aware VEA method consisting of three stages, namely stimuli selection (S), feature extraction (O) and emotion prediction (R). First, specific emotional stimuli (i.e., color, object, face) are selected from images by employing the off-the-shelf tools. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to introduce stimuli selection process into VEA in an end-to-end network. Then, we design three specific networks, i.e., Global-Net, Semantic-Net and Expression-Net, to extract distinct emotional features from different stimuli simultaneously. Finally, benefiting from the inherent structure of Mikel's wheel, we design a novel hierarchical cross-entropy loss to distinguish hard false examples from easy ones in an emotion-specific manner. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on four public visual emotion datasets. Ablation study and visualizations further prove the validity and interpretability of our method.

An Integrated Framework for the Heterogeneous Spatio-Spectral-Temporal Fusion of Remote Sensing Images

Image fusion technology is widely used to fuse the complementary information between multi-source remote sensing images. Inspired by the frontier of deep learning, this paper first proposes a heterogeneous-integrated framework based on a novel deep residual cycle GAN. The proposed network consists of a forward fusion part and a backward degeneration feedback part. The forward part generates the desired fusion result from the various observations; the backward degeneration feedback part considers the imaging degradation process and regenerates the observations inversely from the fusion result. The proposed network can effectively fuse not only the homogeneous but also the heterogeneous information. In addition, for the first time, a heterogeneous-integrated fusion framework is proposed to simultaneously merge the complementary heterogeneous spatial, spectral and temporal information of multi-source heterogeneous observations. The proposed heterogeneous-integrated framework also provides a uniform mode that can complete various fusion tasks, including heterogeneous spatio-spectral fusion, spatio-temporal fusion, and heterogeneous spatio-spectral-temporal fusion. Experiments are conducted for two challenging scenarios of land cover changes and thick cloud coverage. Images from many remote sensing satellites, including MODIS, Landsat-8, Sentinel-1, and Sentinel-2, are utilized in the experiments. Both qualitative and quantitative evaluations confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.

LocTex: Learning Data-Efficient Visual Representations from Localized Textual Supervision

Computer vision tasks such as object detection and semantic/instance segmentation rely on the painstaking annotation of large training datasets. In this paper, we propose LocTex that takes advantage of the low-cost localized textual annotations (i.e., captions and synchronized mouse-over gestures) to reduce the annotation effort. We introduce a contrastive pre-training framework between images and captions and propose to supervise the cross-modal attention map with rendered mouse traces to provide coarse localization signals. Our learned visual features capture rich semantics (from free-form captions) and accurate localization (from mouse traces), which are very effective when transferred to various downstream vision tasks. Compared with ImageNet supervised pre-training, LocTex can reduce the size of the pre-training dataset by 10x or the target dataset by 2x while achieving comparable or even improved performance on COCO instance segmentation. When provided with the same amount of annotations, LocTex achieves around 4% higher accuracy than the previous state-of-the-art "vision+language" pre-training approach on the task of PASCAL VOC image classification.

Geometric Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Semantic Segmentation

Simulators can efficiently generate large amounts of labeled synthetic data with perfect supervision for hard-to-label tasks like semantic segmentation. However, they introduce a domain gap that severely hurts real-world performance. We propose to use self-supervised monocular depth estimation as a proxy task to bridge this gap and improve sim-to-real unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA). Our Geometric Unsupervised Domain Adaptation method (GUDA) learns a domain-invariant representation via a multi-task objective combining synthetic semantic supervision with real-world geometric constraints on videos. GUDA establishes a new state of the art in UDA for semantic segmentation on three benchmarks, outperforming methods that use domain adversarial learning, self-training, or other self-supervised proxy tasks. Furthermore, we show that our method scales well with the quality and quantity of synthetic data while also improving depth prediction.

Remote magnon entanglement between two massive ferrimagnetic spheres via cavity optomagnonics

Recent studies show that hybrid quantum systems based on magnonics provide a new and promising platform for generating macroscopic quantum states involving a large number of spins. Here we show how to entangle two magnon modes in two massive yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) spheres using cavity optomagnonics, where magnons couple to high-quality optical whispering gallery modes supported by the YIG sphere. The spheres can be as large as 1 mm in diameter and each sphere contains more than $10^{18}$ spins. The proposal is based on the asymmetry of the Stokes and anti-Stokes sidebands generated by the magnon-induced Brillouin light scattering in cavity optomagnonics. This allows one to utilize the Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering process, respectively, for generating and verifying the entanglement. Our work indicates that cavity optomagnonics could be a promising system for preparing macroscopic quantum states.

Is Pseudo-Lidar needed for Monocular 3D Object detection?

Recent progress in 3D object detection from single images leverages monocular depth estimation as a way to produce 3D pointclouds, turning cameras into pseudo-lidar sensors. These two-stage detectors improve with the accuracy of the intermediate depth estimation network, which can itself be improved without manual labels via large-scale self-supervised learning. However, they tend to suffer from overfitting more than end-to-end methods, are more complex, and the gap with similar lidar-based detectors remains significant. In this work, we propose an end-to-end, single stage, monocular 3D object detector, DD3D, that can benefit from depth pre-training like pseudo-lidar methods, but without their limitations. Our architecture is designed for effective information transfer between depth estimation and 3D detection, allowing us to scale with the amount of unlabeled pre-training data. Our method achieves state-of-the-art results on two challenging benchmarks, with 16.34% and 9.28% AP for Cars and Pedestrians (respectively) on the KITTI-3D benchmark, and 41.5% mAP on NuScenes.

Coupling Model-Driven and Data-Driven Methods for Remote Sensing Image Restoration and Fusion

In the fields of image restoration and image fusion, model-driven methods and data-driven methods are the two representative frameworks. However, both approaches have their respective advantages and disadvantages. The model-driven methods consider the imaging mechanism, which is deterministic and theoretically reasonable; however, they cannot easily model complicated nonlinear problems. The data-driven methods have a stronger prior knowledge learning capability for huge data, especially for nonlinear statistical features; however, the interpretability of the networks is poor, and they are over-dependent on training data. In this paper, we systematically investigate the coupling of model-driven and data-driven methods, which has rarely been considered in the remote sensing image restoration and fusion communities. We are the first to summarize the coupling approaches into the following three categories: 1) data-driven and model-driven cascading methods; 2) variational models with embedded learning; and 3) model-constrained network learning methods. The typical existing and potential coupling methods for remote sensing image restoration and fusion are introduced with application examples. This paper also gives some new insights into the potential future directions, in terms of both methods and applications.

NewtonNet: A Newtonian message passing network for deep learning of interatomic potentials and forces

We report a new deep learning message passing network that takes inspiration from Newton's equations of motion to learn interatomic potentials and forces. With the advantage of directional information from trainable latent force vectors, and physics-infused operators that are inspired by the Newtonian physics, the entire model remains rotationally equivariant, and many-body interactions are inferred by more interpretable physical features. We test NewtonNet on the prediction of several reactive and non-reactive high quality ab initio data sets including single small molecule dynamics, a large set of chemically diverse molecules, and methane and hydrogen combustion reactions, achieving state-of-the-art test performance on energies and forces with far greater data and computational efficiency than other deep learning models.

Real-time Keypoints Detection for Autonomous Recovery of the Unmanned Ground Vehicle

The combination of a small unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) and a large unmanned carrier vehicle allows more flexibility in real applications such as rescue in dangerous scenarios. The autonomous recovery system, which is used to guide the small UGV back to the carrier vehicle, is an essential component to achieve a seamless combination of the two vehicles. This paper proposes a novel autonomous recovery framework with a low-cost monocular vision system to provide accurate positioning and attitude estimation of the UGV during navigation. First, we introduce a light-weight convolutional neural network called UGV-KPNet to detect the keypoints of the small UGV from the images captured by a monocular camera. UGV-KPNet is computationally efficient with a small number of parameters and provides pixel-level accurate keypoints detection results in real-time. Then, six degrees of freedom pose is estimated using the detected keypoints to obtain positioning and attitude information of the UGV. Besides, we are the first to create a large-scale real-world keypoints dataset of the UGV. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of both accuracy and speed on UGV keypoint detection, and can further boost the 6-DoF pose estimation for the UGV.

A Generic Transformation to Generate MDS Storage Codes with $δ$-Optimal Access Property

For high-rate maximum distance separable (MDS) codes, most of them are designed to optimally repair a single failed node by connecting all the surviving nodes. However, in practical systems, sometimes not all the surviving nodes are available. To facilitate the practical storage system, a few constructions of $(n,k)$ MDS codes with the property that any single failed node can be optimally repaired by accessing any $d$ surviving nodes have been proposed, where $d\in [k+1:n-1)$. However, all of them either have large sub-packetization levels or are not explicit for all the parameters. To address these issues, we propose a generic transformation that can convert any $(n',k')$ MDS code to another $(n,k)$ MDS code with the optimal repair property and optimal access property for an arbitrary set of two nodes, while the repair efficiency of the remaining $n-2$ nodes can be kept. By recursively applying the generic transformation to a scalar MDS code multiple times, we get an MDS code with the optimal repair property and the optimal access property for all nodes, which outperforms previous known MDS codes in terms of either the sub-packetization level or the flexibility of the parameters.

Wideband photonic blind source separation with optical pulse sampling

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an optical pulse sampling method for photonic blind source separation. The photonic system processes and separates wideband signals based on the statistical information of the mixed signals and thus the sampling frequency can be orders of magnitude lower than the bandwidth of the signals. The ultra-fast optical pulse functions as a tweezer that collects samples of the signals at very low sampling rates, and each sample is short enough to maintain the statistical properties of the signals. The low sampling frequency reduces the workloads of the analog to digital conversion and digital signal processing systems. In the meantime, the short pulse sampling maintains the accuracy of the sampled signals, so the statistical properties of the undersampling signals are the same as the statistical properties of the original signals. With the optical pulses generated from a mode-locked laser, the optical pulse sampling system is able to process and separate mixed signals with bandwidth over 100GHz and achieves a dynamic range of 30dB.

Fully Polarimetric SAR and Single-Polarization SAR Image Fusion Network

The data fusion technology aims to aggregate the characteristics of different data and obtain products with multiple data advantages. To solves the problem of reduced resolution of PolSAR images due to system limitations, we propose a fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) images and single-polarization synthetic aperture radar SAR (SinSAR) images fusion network to generate high-resolution PolSAR (HR-PolSAR) images. To take advantage of the polarimetric information of the low-resolution PolSAR (LR-PolSAR) image and the spatial information of the high-resolution single-polarization SAR (HR-SinSAR) image, we propose a fusion framework for joint LR-PolSAR image and HR-SinSAR image and design a cross-attention mechanism to extract features from the joint input data. Besides, based on the physical imaging mechanism, we designed the PolSAR polarimetric loss function for constrained network training. The experimental results confirm the superiority of fusion network over traditional algorithms. The average PSNR is increased by more than 3.6db, and the average MAE is reduced to less than 0.07. Experiments on polarimetric decomposition and polarimetric signature show that it maintains polarimetric information well.

Align Deep Features for Oriented Object Detection

The past decade has witnessed significant progress on detecting objects in aerial images that are often distributed with large scale variations and arbitrary orientations. However most of existing methods rely on heuristically defined anchors with different scales, angles and aspect ratios and usually suffer from severe misalignment between anchor boxes and axis-aligned convolutional features, which leads to the common inconsistency between the classification score and localization accuracy. To address this issue, we propose a Single-shot Alignment Network (S$^2$A-Net) consisting of two modules: a Feature Alignment Module (FAM) and an Oriented Detection Module (ODM). The FAM can generate high-quality anchors with an Anchor Refinement Network and adaptively align the convolutional features according to the anchor boxes with a novel Alignment Convolution. The ODM first adopts active rotating filters to encode the orientation information and then produces orientation-sensitive and orientation-invariant features to alleviate the inconsistency between classification score and localization accuracy. Besides, we further explore the approach to detect objects in large-size images, which leads to a better trade-off between speed and accuracy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can achieve state-of-the-art performance on two commonly used aerial objects datasets (i.e., DOTA and HRSC2016) while keeping high efficiency. The code is available at https://github.com/csuhan/s2anet.

IMENet: Joint 3D Semantic Scene Completion and 2D Semantic Segmentation through Iterative Mutual Enhancement

3D semantic scene completion and 2D semantic segmentation are two tightly correlated tasks that are both essential for indoor scene understanding, because they predict the same semantic classes, using positively correlated high-level features. Current methods use 2D features extracted from early-fused RGB-D images for 2D segmentation to improve 3D scene completion. We argue that this sequential scheme does not ensure these two tasks fully benefit each other, and present an Iterative Mutual Enhancement Network (IMENet) to solve them jointly, which interactively refines the two tasks at the late prediction stage. Specifically, two refinement modules are developed under a unified framework for the two tasks. The first is a 2D Deformable Context Pyramid (DCP) module, which receives the projection from the current 3D predictions to refine the 2D predictions. In turn, a 3D Deformable Depth Attention (DDA) module is proposed to leverage the reprojected results from 2D predictions to update the coarse 3D predictions. This iterative fusion happens to the stable high-level features of both tasks at a late stage. Extensive experiments on NYU and NYUCAD datasets verify the effectiveness of the proposed iterative late fusion scheme, and our approach outperforms the state of the art on both 3D semantic scene completion and 2D semantic segmentation.

A Circular-Structured Representation for Visual Emotion Distribution Learning

Visual Emotion Analysis (VEA) has attracted increasing attention recently with the prevalence of sharing images on social networks. Since human emotions are ambiguous and subjective, it is more reasonable to address VEA in a label distribution learning (LDL) paradigm rather than a single-label classification task. Different from other LDL tasks, there exist intrinsic relationships between emotions and unique characteristics within them, as demonstrated in psychological theories. Inspired by this, we propose a well-grounded circular-structured representation to utilize the prior knowledge for visual emotion distribution learning. To be specific, we first construct an Emotion Circle to unify any emotional state within it. On the proposed Emotion Circle, each emotion distribution is represented with an emotion vector, which is defined with three attributes (i.e., emotion polarity, emotion type, emotion intensity) as well as two properties (i.e., similarity, additivity). Besides, we design a novel Progressive Circular (PC) loss to penalize the dissimilarities between predicted emotion vector and labeled one in a coarse-to-fine manner, which further boosts the learning process in an emotion-specific way. Extensive experiments and comparisons are conducted on public visual emotion distribution datasets, and the results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Bias-tunable two-dimensional magnetic and topological materials

Searching for novel two-dimensional (2D) materials is crucial for the development of the next generation technologies such as electronics, optoelectronics, electrochemistry and biomedicine. In this work, we designed a series of 2D materials based on endohedral fullerenes, and revealed that many of them integrate different functions in a single system, such as ferroelectricity with large electric dipole moments, multiple magnetic phases with both strong magnetic anisotropy and high Curie temperature, quantum spin Hall effect or quantum anomalous Hall effect with robust topologically protected edge states. We further proposed a new style topological field-effect transistor. These findings provide a strategy of using fullerenes as building blocks for the synthesis of novel 2D materials which can be easily controlled with a local electric field.

GPLA-12: An Acoustic Signal Dataset of Gas Pipeline Leakage

In this paper, we introduce a new acoustic leakage dataset of gas pipelines, called as GPLA-12, which has 12 categories over 684 training/testing acoustic signals. Unlike massive image and voice datasets, there have relatively few acoustic signal datasets, especially for engineering fault detection. In order to enhance the development of fault diagnosis, we collect acoustic leakage signals on the basis of an intact gas pipe system with external artificial leakages, and then preprocess the collected data with structured tailoring which are turned into GPLA-12. GPLA-12 dedicates to serve as a feature learning dataset for time-series tasks and classifications. To further understand the dataset, we train both shadow and deep learning algorithms to observe the performance. The dataset as well as the pretrained models have been released at both www.daip.club and github.com/Deep-AI-Application-DAIP
