Decoupled Potential Integral Equations for Electromagnetic Scattering from Dielectric Objects

Recent work on developing novel integral equation formulations has involved using potentials as opposed to fields. This is a consequence of the additional flexibility offered by using potentials to develop well conditioned systems. Most of the work in this arena has wrestled with developing this formulation for perfectly conducting objects (Vico et al., 2014 and Liu et al., 2015), with recent effort made to addressing similar problems for dielectrics (Li et al., 2017). In this paper, we present well-conditioned decoupled potential integral equation (DPIE) formulated for electromagnetic scattering from homogeneous dielectric objects, a fully developed version of that presented in the conference communication (Li et al., 2017). The formulation is based on boundary conditions derived for decoupled boundary conditions on the scalar and vector potentials. The resulting DPIE is the second kind integral equation, and does not suffer from either low frequency or dense mesh breakdown. Analytical properties of the DPIE are studied. Results on the sphere analysis are provided to demonstrate the conditioning and spectrum of the resulting linear system.

Potential Integral Equations in Electromagnetics

In this work, a new integral equation (IE) based formulation is proposed using vector and scalar potentials for electromagnetic scattering. The new integral equations feature decoupled vector and scalar potentials that satisfy Lorentz gauge. The decoupling of the two potentials allows low-frequency stability. The formulation presented also results in Fredholm integral equations of second kind. The spectral properties of second kind integral operators leads to a well-conditioned system.

Information transmission on hybrid networks

Many real-world communication networks often have hybrid nature with both fixed nodes and moving modes, such as the mobile phone networks mainly composed of fixed base stations and mobile phones. In this paper, we discuss the information transmission process on the hybrid networks with both fixed and mobile nodes. The fixed nodes (base stations) are connected as a spatial lattice on the plane forming the information-carrying backbone, while the mobile nodes (users), which are the sources and destinations of information packets, connect to their current nearest fixed nodes respectively to deliver and receive information packets. We observe the phase transition of traffic load in the hybrid network when the packet generation rate goes from below and then above a critical value, which measures the network capacity of packets delivery. We obtain the optimal speed of moving nodes leading to the maximum network capacity. We further improve the network capacity by rewiring the fixed nodes and by considering the current load of fixed nodes during packets transmission. Our purpose is to optimize the network capacity of hybrid networks from the perspective of network science, and provide some insights for the construction of future communication infrastructures.

Simulation of longitudinal dynamics of laser-cooled and RF-bunched C$^{3+}$ ion beams at heavy ion storage ring CSRe

Laser cooling of relativistic heavy ion beams of Li-like C$^{3+}$ and O$^{4+}$ is being in preparation at the experimental Cooler Storage Ring (CSRe). Recently, a preparatory experiment to test important prerequisites for laser cooling of relativistic $^{12}$C$^{3+}$ ion beams using a pulsed laser system has been performed at the CSRe. Unfortunately, the interaction between the ions and the pulsed laser cannot be detected. In order to study the laser cooling process and find the optimized parameters for future laser cooling experiment, a multi-particle tracking method was developed to simulate the detailed longitudinal dynamics of laser-cooled ion beams at the CSRe. The simulations of laser cooling of the $^{12}$C$^{3+}$ ion beams by scanning the frequency of RF-buncher or continuous wave (CW) laser wavelength were performed. The simulation results indicated that a large momentum spread ion beams could be laser-cooled by the combination of only one CW laser and the RF-buncher and shown the requirements of a successful laser cooling experiment. The optimized parameters for scanning the RF-buncher frequency or laser frequency were obtained. Furthermore, the heating effects were estimated for laser cooling at the CSRe. The Schottky noise spectra of longitudinally modulated and laser-cooled ion beams was simulated to fully explain and anticipate the experimental results. The combination of Schottky spectra from the highly sensitive resonant Schottky pick-up and the simulation methods developed in this paper will be helpful to investigate the longitudinal dynamics of RF-bunched and ultra-cold ion beams in the upcoming laser cooling experiments at the CSRe.

Carrier Phase Estimation in Dispersion-Unmanaged Optical Transmission Systems

The study on carrier phase estimation (CPE) approaches, involving a one-tap normalized least-mean-square (NLMS) algorithm, a block-wise average algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm has been carried out in the long-haul high-capacity dispersion-unmanaged coherent optical systems. The close-form expressions and analytical predictions for bit-error-rate behaviors in these CPE methods have been analyzed by considering both the laser phase noise and the equalization enhanced phase noise. It is found that the Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm outperforms the one-tap NLMS and the block-wise average algorithms for a small phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance), while the three CPE methods converge to a similar performance for a large phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance). In addition, the differences between the three CPE approaches become smaller for higher-level modulation formats.

Analysis of chromatic dispersion compensation and carrier phase recovery in long-haul optical transmission system influenced by equalization enhanced phase noise

The performance of long-haul coherent optical fiber transmission system is significantly affected by the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN), due to the interaction between the electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) and the laser phase noise. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study on different chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation and carrier phase recovery (CPR) approaches, in the n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) and the n-level quadrature amplitude modulation (n-QAM) coherent optical transmission systems, considering the impacts of EEPN. Four CD compensation methods are considered: the time-domain equalization (TDE), the frequency-domain equalization (FDE), the least mean square (LMS) adaptive equalization are applied for EDC, and the dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) is employed for optical dispersion compensation (ODC). Meanwhile, three carrier phase recovery methods are also involved: a one-tap normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm, a block-wise average (BWA) algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi (VV) algorithm. Numerical simulations have been carried out in a 28-Gbaud dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) coherent transmission system, and the results indicate that the origin of EEPN depends on the choice of chromatic dispersion compensation methods, and the effects of EEPN also behave moderately different in accordance to different carrier phase recovery scenarios.

Enhanced entanglement of two different mechanical resonators via coherent feedback

It was shown [New J. Phys. 17, 103037 (2015)] that large and robust entanglement between two different mechanical resonators could be achieved, either dynamically or in the steady state, in an optomechanical system in which the two mechanical resonators are coupled to a single cavity mode driven by a suitably chosen two-tone field. An important limitation of the scheme is that the cavity decay rate must be much smaller than the two mechanical frequencies and their difference. Here we show that the entanglement can be remarkably enhanced, and the validity of the scheme can be largely extended, by adding a coherent feedback loop that effectively reduces the cavity decay rate.

Generalized Debye Sources Based EFIE Solver on Subdivision Surfaces

The electric field integral equation is a well known workhorse for obtaining fields scattered by a perfect electric conducting (PEC) object. As a result, the nuances and challenges of solving this equation have been examined for a while. Two recent papers motivate the effort presented in this paper. Unlike traditional work that uses equivalent currents defined on surfaces, recent research proposes a technique that results in well conditioned systems by employing generalized Debye sources (GDS) as unknowns. In a complementary effort, some of us developed a method that exploits the same representation for both the geometry (subdivision surface representations) and functions defined on the geometry, also known as isogeometric analysis (IGA). The challenge in generalizing GDS method to a discretized geometry is the complexity of the intermediate operators. However, thanks to our earlier work on subdivision surfaces, the additional smoothness of geometric representation permits discretizing these intermediate operations. In this paper, we employ both ideas to present a well conditioned GDS-EFIE. Here, the intermediate surface Laplacian is well discretized by using subdivision basis. Likewise, using subdivision basis to represent the sources, results in an efficient and accurate IGA framework. Numerous results are presented to demonstrate the efficacy of the approach.

Enhanced entanglement of two optical modes in optomechanical systems via an optical parametric amplifier

We investigate the effect of a degenerate optical parametric amplifier (OPA) placed inside an optomechanical cavity on the steady-state entanglement of two cavity modes, which jointly interact with a mechanical resonator. Two cavity modes are respectively driven at the red and blue sideband associated with the mechanical resonator, which generates entanglement between them in the limit of resolved sideband. The OPA gives rise to single-mode squeezing of the cavity fields, which results in significant improvement of the two-mode entanglement. It is found that an optimal nonlinear gain of the OPA exists, depending on the system temperatures, which yields the maximum entanglement. The improvement is particularly remarkable for the system at cryogenic temperatures.

Probing Spontaneous Wave-Function Collapse with Entangled Levitating Nanospheres

Wave function collapse models are considered as the modified theories of standard quantum mechanics at the macroscopic level. By introducing nonlinear stochastic terms in the Schrödinger equation, these models make predictions, differently from those of standard quantum mechanics, that it is fundamentally impossible to prepare macroscopic systems in macroscopic superpositions. The validity of these models can only be examined by experiments and hence efficient protocols for this kind of experiments are highly needed. Here we provide a protocol that is able to probe the postulated collapse effect by means of the entanglement of the center-of-mass motion of two nanospheres optically trapped in a Fabry-Pérot cavity. We show that the collapse noise results in large reduction of the steady-state entanglement and the entanglement, with and without the collapse effect, shows distinguishable scalings with certain system parameters, which can be used to unambiguously determine the effect of these models.

Detection of Potential Transit Signals in 17 Quarters of Kepler Data: Results of the Final Kepler Mission Transiting Planet Search (DR25)

We present results of the final Kepler Data Processing Pipeline search for transiting planet signals in the full 17-quarter primary mission data set. The search includes a total of 198,709 stellar targets, of which 112,046 were observed in all 17 quarters and 86,663 in fewer than 17 quarters. We report on 17,230 targets for which at least one transit signature is identified that meets the specified detection criteria: periodicity, minimum of three observed transit events, detection statistic (i.e., signal-to-noise ratio) in excess of the search threshold, and passing grade on three statistical transit consistency tests. Light curves for which a transit signal is identified are iteratively searched for additional signatures after a limb-darkened transiting planet model is fitted to the data and transit events are removed. The search for additional planets adds 16,802 transit signals for a total of 34,032; this far exceeds the number of transit signatures identified in prior pipeline runs. There was a strategic emphasis on completeness over reliability for the final Kepler transit search. A comparison of the transit signals against a set of 3402 well-established, high-quality Kepler Objects of Interest yields a recovery rate of 99.8%. The high recovery rate must be weighed against a large number of false-alarm detections. We examine characteristics of the planet population implied by the transiting planet model fits with an emphasis on detections that would represent small planets orbiting in the habitable zone of their host stars.

Close-Form Expression of One-Tap Normalized LMS Carrier Phase Recovery in Optical Communication Systems

The performance of long-haul high speed coherent optical fiber communication systems is significantly degraded by the laser phase noise and the equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN). In this paper, the analysis of the one-tap normalized least-mean-square (LMS) carrier phase recovery (CPR) is carried out and the close-form expression is investigated for quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) coherent optical fiber communication systems, in compensating both laser phase noise and equalization enhanced phase noise. Numerical simulations have also been implemented to verify the theoretical analysis. It is found that the one-tap normalized least-mean-square algorithm gives the same analytical expression for predicting CPR bit-error-rate (BER) floors as the traditional differential carrier phase recovery, when both the laser phase noise and the equalization enhanced phase noise are taken into account.

Analytical Investigations on Carrier Phase Recovery in Dispersion-Unmanaged n-PSK Coherent Optical Communication Systems

Using coherent optical detection and digital signal processing, laser phase noise and equalization enhanced phase noise can be effectively mitigated using the feed-forward and feed-back carrier phase recovery approaches. In this paper, theoretical analyses of feed-back and feed-forward carrier phase recovery methods have been carried out in the long-haul high-speed n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) optical fiber communication systems, involving a one-tap normalized least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm, a block-wise average algorithm, and a Viterbi-Viterbi algorithm. The analytical expressions for evaluating the estimated carrier phase and for predicting the bit-error-rate (BER) performance (such as the BER floors) have been presented and discussed in the n-PSK coherent optical transmission systems by considering both the laser phase noise and the equalization enhanced phase noise. The results indicate that the Viterbi-Viterbi carrier phase recovery algorithm outperforms the one-tap normalized LMS and the block-wise average algorithms for small phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance), while the one-tap normalized LMS algorithm shows a better performance than the other two algorithms for large phase noise variance (or effective phase noise variance). In addition, the one-tap normalized LMS algorithm is more sensitive to the level of modulation formats.

Multiple predator based capture process on complex networks

The predator/prey (capture) problem is a prototype of many network-related applications. We study the capture process on complex networks by considering multiple predators from multiple sources. In our model, some lions start from multiple sources simultaneously to capture the lamb by biased random walks, which are controlled with a free parameter $α$. We derive the distribution of the lamb's lifetime and the expected lifetime $\left\langle T\right\rangle $. Through simulation, we find that the expected lifetime drops substantially with the increasing number of lions. We also study how the underlying topological structure affects the capture process, and obtain that locating on small-degree nodes is better than large-degree nodes to prolong the lifetime of the lamb. Moreover, dense or homogeneous network structures are against the survival of the lamb.

Digital Adaptive Carrier Phase Estimation in Multi-Level Phase Shift Keying Coherent Optical Communication Systems

The analysis of adaptive carrier phase estimation is investigated in long-haul high speed n-level phase shift keying (n-PSK) optical fiber communication systems based on the one-tap normalized least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm. The close-form expressions for the estimated carrier phase and the bit-error-rate floor have been derived in the n-PSK coherent optical transmission systems. The results show that the one-tap normalized LMS algorithm performs pretty well in the carrier phase estimation, but will be less effective with the increment of modulation levels, in the compensation of both intrinsic laser phase noise and equalization enhanced phase noise.

Phase Noise Influence in Coherent Optical OFDM Systems with RF Pilot Tone: Digital IFFT Multiplexing and FFT Demodulation

We present a comparative study of the influence of dispersion induced phase noise for CO-OFDM systems using Tx channel multiplexing and Rx matched filter (analogue hardware based); and FFT multiplexing/IFFT demultiplexing techniques (software based). An RF carrier pilot tone is used to mitigate the phase noise influence. From the analysis, it appears that the phase noise influence for the two OFDM implementations is very similar. The software based system provides a method for a rigorous evaluation of the phase noise variance caused by Common Phase Error (CPE) and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) and this, in turns, leads to a BER specification. Numerical results focus on a CO-OFDM system with 1GS/s QPSK channel modulation. Worst case BER results are evaluated and compared to the BER of a QPSK system with the same capacity as the OFDM implementation. Results are evaluated as a function of transmission distance, and for the QPSK system the influence of equalization enhanced phase noise (EEPN) is included. For both types of systems, the phase noise variance increases significantly with increasing transmission distance. An important and novel observation is that the two types of systems have very closely the same BER as a function of transmission distance for the same capacity. For the high capacity QPSK implementation, the increase in BER is due to EEPN, whereas for the OFDM approach it is due to the dispersion caused walk-off of the RF pilot tone relative to the OFDM signal channels. For a total capacity of 400 Gb/s, the transmission distance to have the BER < 10-4 is less than 277 km.

Phase Noise Influence in Optical OFDM Systems employing RF Pilot Tone for Phase Noise Cancellation

For coherent and direct-detection Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexed (OFDM) systems employing radio frequency (RF) pilot tone phase noise cancellation the influence of laser phase noise is evaluated. Novel analytical results for the common phase error and for the (modulation dependent) inter carrier interference are evaluated based upon Gaussian statistics for the laser phase noise. In the evaluation it is accounted for that the laser phase noise is filtered in the correlation signal detection. Numerical results are presented for OFDM systems with 4 and 16 PSK modulation, 200 OFDM bins and baud rate of 1 GS/s. It is found that about 225 km transmission is feasible for the coherent 4PSK-OFDM system over normal (G.652) fiber.
