NUMA-aware FFT-based Convolution on ARMv8 Many-core CPUs

Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), one of the most representative algorithms of deep learning, are widely used in various artificial intelligence applications. Convolution operations often take most of the computational overhead of CNNs. The FFT-based algorithm can improve the efficiency of convolution by reducing its algorithm complexity, there are a lot of works about the high-performance implementation of FFT-based convolution on many-core CPUs. However, there is no optimization for the non-uniform memory access (NUMA) characteristics in many-core CPUs. In this paper, we present a NUMA-aware FFT-based convolution implementation on ARMv8 many-core CPUs with NUMA architectures. The implementation can reduce a number of remote memory access through the data reordering of FFT transformations and the three-level parallelization of the complex matrix multiplication. The experiment results on a ARMv8 many-core CPU with NUMA architectures demonstrate that our NUMA-aware implementation has much better performance than the state-of-the-art work in most cases.

Basic quantities of the Equation of State in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter

Based on the Hugenholtz-Van Hove theorem, six basic quantities of the EoS in isospin asymmetric nuclear matter are expressed in terms of the nucleon kinetic energy $t(k)$, the isospin symmetric and asymmetric parts of the single-nucleon potentials $U_0(ρ,k)$ and $U_{\text{\text{sym,i}}}(ρ,k)$. The six basic quantities include the quadratic symmetry energy $E_{\text{sym,2}}(ρ)$, the quartic symmetry energy $E_{\text{sym,4}}(ρ)$, their corresponding density slopes $L_2(ρ)$ and $L_4(ρ)$, and the incompressibility coefficients $K_2(ρ)$ and $K_4(ρ)$. By using four types of well-known effective nucleon-nucleon interaction models, namely the BGBD, MDI, Skyrme, and Gogny forces, the density- and isospin-dependent properties of these basic quantities are systematically calculated and their values at the saturation density $ρ_0$ are explicitly given. The contributions to these quantities from $t(k)$, $U_0(ρ,k)$, and $U_{\text{sym,i}}(ρ,k)$ are also analyzed at the normal nuclear density $ρ_0$. It is clearly shown that the first-order asymmetric term $U_{\text{sym,1}}(ρ,k)$ (also known as the symmetry potential in Lane potential) plays a vital role in determining the density dependence of the quadratic symmetry energy $E_{\text{sym,2}}(ρ)$. It is also shown that the contributions from high-order asymmetric parts of the single-nucleon potentials ($U_{\text{sym,i}}(ρ,k)$ with $i>1$) cannot be neglected in the calculations of the other five basic quantities. Moreover, by analyzing the properties of asymmetric nuclear matter at the exact saturation density $ρ_{\text{sat}}(δ)$, the corresponding quadratic incompressibility coefficient is found to have a simple empirical relation $K_{\text{sat,2}}=K_{2}(ρ_0)-4.14 L_2(ρ_0)$.

A Quantum Algorithm to Calculate Band Structure at the EOM Level of Theory

Band structure is a cornerstone to understand electronic properties of materials. Accurate band structure calculations using a high-level quantum-chemistry theory can be computationally very expensive. It is promising to speed up such calculations with a quantum computer. In this study, we present a quantum algorithm for band structure calculation based on the equation-of-motion (EOM) theory. First, we introduce a new variational quantum eigensolver algorithm named ADAPT-C for ground-state quantum simulation of solids, where the wave function is built adaptively from a complete set of anti-Hermitian operators. Then, on top of the ADAPT-C ground state, quasiparticle energies and the band structure can be calculated using the EOM theory in a quantum-subspace-expansion (QSE) style, where the projected excitation operators guarantee that the killer condition is satisfied. As a proof of principle, such an EOM-ADAPT-C protocol is used to calculate the band structures of silicon and diamond using a quantum computer simulator.

Numerical Eigensolver for Solving Eigenmodes of Cavity Resonators Filled With both Electric and Magnetic Lossy, Anisotropic Media

This article presents the numerical eigensolver to find the resonant frequencies of 3-D closed cavity resonators filled with both electric and magnetic lossy, anisotropic media. By introducing a dummy variable with zero value in the 3-D linear vector Maxwell eigenvalue problem for the electric field, we enforce the divergence-free condition for electric flux density in a weak sense. In addition, by introducing a dummy variable with constant value in the 3-D linear vector Maxwell eigenvalue problem for the magnetic field, we enforce the divergence-free condition for magnetic flux density in a weak sense. Moreover, it is theoretically proved that the novel method of introducing dummy variables can be free of all the spurious modes in solving eigenmodes of the 3-D closed cavity problem. Numerical experiments show that the numerical eigensolver supported by this article can eliminate all the spurious modes, including spurious dc modes.

Edge-Cloud Collaborated Object Detection via Difficult-Case Discriminator

As one of the basic tasks of computer vision, object detection has been widely used in many intelligent applications. However, object detection algorithms are usually heavyweight in computation, hindering their implementations on resource-constrained edge devices. Current edge-cloud collaboration methods, such as CNN partition over Edge-cloud devices, are not suitable for object detection since the huge data size of the intermediate results will introduce extravagant communication costs. To address this challenge, we propose a small-big model framework that deploys a big model in the cloud and a small model on the edge devices. Upon receiving data, the edge device operates a difficult-case discriminator to classify the images into easy cases and difficult cases according to the specific semantics of the images. The easy cases will be processed locally at the edge, and the difficult cases will be uploaded to the cloud. Experimental results on the VOC, COCO, HELMET datasets using two different object detection algorithms demonstrate that the small-big model system can detect 94.01%-97.84% of objects with only about 50% images uploaded to the cloud when using SSD. In addition, the small-big model averagely reaches 91.22%- 92.52% end-to-end mAP of the scheme that uploading all images to the cloud.

Non-Abelian braiding in spin superconductors utilizing the Aharonov-Casher effect

Spin superconductor (SSC) is an exciton condensate state where the spin-triplet exciton superfluidity is charge neutral while spin $2(\hbar/2)$. In analogy to the Majorana zero mode (MZM) in topological superconductors, the interplay between SSC and band topology will also give rise to a specific kind of topological boundary state obeying non-Abelian braiding statistics. Remarkably, the non-Abelian geometric phase here originates from the Aharonov-Casher effect of the "half-charge" other than the Aharonov-Bohm effect. Such topological boundary state of SSC is bound with the vortex of electric flux gradient and can be experimentally more distinct than the MZM for being electrically charged. This theoretical proposal provides a new avenue investigating the non-Abelian braiding physics without the assistance of MZM and charge superconductor.

Spectral Element Method for the Elastic/Acoustic Waveguide Problem in Anisotropic Metamaterials

In order to simulate elastic wave propagation in a complex structure with inhomogeneous media, we often need to obtain the propagating eigenmodes of an elastic waveguide. As the waveguide is assumed uniform in one direction, the original 3-D problem can be converted into a so-called 2.5-D problem by using the Fourier transform in that direction. However, the introduction of elastic metamaterials (EMM) broadens the horizon of this subject, and new features are required in EMM waveguides that cannot be obtained by most traditional waveguide solvers. In this work, a spectral element method (SEM) is developed to simulate the elastic/acoustic waveguide problem in anisotropic media with anisotropic mass density and/or negative index parameters. To the best of our knowledge, the SEM has not been introduced previously for such a waveguide problem. For waveguides with anisotropic density that cannot be solved by the FEM in most of commercial software packages, we design an anisotropic density EMM waveguide with our SEM solver to demonstrate some intriguing phenomena. The spectral element results are verified by several numerical examples through comparison with the traditional finite element method (FEM) to show its significant advantages in term of accuracy and computation efficiency.

Accurate Mode-Coupling Characterization of Low-Crosstalk Ring-Core Fibers using Integral Calculation based Swept-Wavelength Interferometry Measurement

In this paper, to accurately characterize the low inter-mode coupling of the weakly-coupled few mode fibers (FMFs), we propose a modified inter-mode coupling characterization method based on swept-wavelength interferometry measurement, in which an integral calculation approach is used to eliminate significant sources of error that may lead to underestimation of the power coupling coefficient. Using the proposed characterization method, a low-crosstalk ring-core fiber (RCF) with low mode dependent loss (MDL) and with single span length up to 100 km is experimentally measured to have low power coupling coefficients between high-order orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode groups of below -30 dB/km over C band. The measured low coupling coefficients based on the proposed method are verified by the direct system power measurements, proving the feasibility and reliability of the proposed inter-mode coupling characterization method.

Fano manifolds containing a negative divisor isomorphic to a rational homogeneous space of Picard number one

Let $X$ be an $n$-dimensional complex Fano manifolds $(n\geq 3)$. Assume that $X$ contains a divisor $A$, which is isomorphic to a rational homogeneous space with Picard number one, such that the conormal bundle $\mathscr{N}^*_{A/X}$ is ample over $A$. Building on the works of Tsukioka, Watanabe and Casagrande-Druel, we give a complete classification of such pairs $(X,A)$.

Phase-dependent cross sections of deuteron-triton fusion in dichromatic intense fields with high-frequency limit

We investigate the influence of strong dichromatic laser fields (i.e. 1ω-2ω and 1ω-3ω) with high-frequency limit on the cross sections of deuteron-triton(DT) fusion in Kramers-Henneberger(KH) frame. We focus on the transitions of phase-dependent effects depending on a dimensionless quantity n_{d} , which equals the ratio of the quiver oscillation amplitude to the geometrical touching radius of the deuteron and triton as defined in our previous research. Theoretical calculations show that the angle-dependent as well as phase-dependent Coulomb barrier penetrabilities can be enhanced in dichromatic intense fields, and the corresponding angle-averaged penetrabilities and the fusion cross sections increase significantly compared with field-free case. Moreover, we find that there are twice shifts of the peak in the cross sections whenever the frequency becomes sufficiently low or the intensity sufficiently high. The reason for the first shift is the angle-dependence effects for sub-barrier fusion, while the second shift is due to the accumulation of over-barrier fusion, these mechanisms are analyzed in detail in this paper.

Federated Learning with Dynamic Transformer for Text to Speech

Text to speech (TTS) is a crucial task for user interaction, but TTS model training relies on a sizable set of high-quality original datasets. Due to privacy and security issues, the original datasets are usually unavailable directly. Recently, federated learning proposes a popular distributed machine learning paradigm with an enhanced privacy protection mechanism. It offers a practical and secure framework for data owners to collaborate with others, thus obtaining a better global model trained on the larger dataset. However, due to the high complexity of transformer models, the convergence process becomes slow and unstable in the federated learning setting. Besides, the transformer model trained in federated learning is costly communication and limited computational speed on clients, impeding its popularity. To deal with these challenges, we propose the federated dynamic transformer. On the one hand, the performance is greatly improved comparing with the federated transformer, approaching centralize-trained Transformer-TTS when increasing clients number. On the other hand, it achieves faster and more stable convergence in the training phase and significantly reduces communication time. Experiments on the LJSpeech dataset also strongly prove our method's advantage.

Robust optical frequency transfer in a noisy urban fiber network

Optical fibers have been recognized as one of the most promising host material for high phase coherence optical frequency transfer over thousands of kilometers. In the pioneering work, the active phase noise cancellation (ANC) technique has been widely used for suppressing the fiber phase noise introduced by the environmental perturbations, in which an ideal phase detector with high resolution and unlimited detection range is needed to extract the fiber phase noise, in particular for noisy fiber links. We demonstrate the passive phase noise cancellation (PNC) technique without the need of phase detector could be preferable for noisy fiber links. To avoid the effect of the radio frequency (RF) from the time base at the local site in the conventional active or passive phase noise cancellation techniques, here we introduce a fiber-pigtailed acousto-optic modulator (AOM) with two diffraction order outputs (0 and +1 order) with properly allocating the AOM-driving frequencies allowing to cancel the time base effect. Using this technique, we demonstrate transfer of coherent light through a 260 km noisy urban fiber link. The results show the effect of the RF reference can be successfully removed. After being passively compensated, {we demonstrate a fractional frequency instability of $4.9\times10^{-14}$ at the integration time of 1 s and scales down to $10^{-20}$ level at 10,000 s in terms of modified Allan deviation over the 260 km noisy urban fiber link}. The frequency uncertainty of the retrieved light after transferring through this noise-compensated fiber link relative to that of the input light achieves $(0.41\pm4.7)\times10^{-18}$. The proposed technique opens a way to a broad distribution of an ultrastable frequency reference with high coherence without any effects coming from the RF reference and enables a wide range of applications beyond metrology over fiber networks.

Distributed Constrained Optimization with Delayed Subgradient Information over Time-Varying Network under Adaptive Quantization

In this paper, we consider a distributed constrained optimization problem with delayed subgradient information over the time-varying communication network, where each agent can only communicate with its neighbors and the communication channel has a limited data rate. We propose an adaptive quantization method to address this problem. A mirror descent algorithm with delayed subgradient information is established based on the theory of Bregman divergence. With non-Euclidean Bregman projection-based scheme, the proposed method essentially generalizes many previous classical Euclidean projection-based distributed algorithms. Through the proposed adaptive quantization method, the optimal value without any quantization error can be obtained. Furthermore, comprehensive analysis on convergence of the algorithm is carried out and our results show that the optimal convergence rate $O(1/\sqrt{T})$ can be obtained under appropriate conditions. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm and theoretical results.

Detecting and Correcting IMU Movements During Joint Angle Estimation

Inertial measurement units (IMUs) increasingly function as a basic component of wearable sensor network (WSN)systems. IMU-based joint angle estimation (JAE) is a relatively typical usage of IMUs, with extensive applications. However, the issue that IMUs move with respect to their original placement during JAE is still a research gap, and limits the robustness of deploying the technique in real-world application scenarios. In this study, we propose to detect and correct the IMU movement online in a relatively computationally lightweight manner. Particularly, we first experimentally investigate the influence of IMU movements. Second, we design the metrics for detecting IMU movements by mathematically formulating how the IMU movement affects the IMU measurements. Third, we determine the optimal thresholds of metrics by synthetic IMU data from a significantly amended simulation model. Finally, a correction method is proposed to correct the effects of IMU movements. We demonstrate our method on both synthetic data and real-user data. The results demonstrate our method is a promising solution to detecting and correcting IMU movements during JAE.

Semantics of the Unwritten: The Effect of End of Paragraph and Sequence Tokens on Text Generation with GPT2

The semantics of a text is manifested not only by what is read, but also by what is not read. In this article, we will study how the implicit "not read" information such as end-of-paragraph (\eop) and end-of-sequence (\eos) affect the quality of text generation. Specifically, we find that the pre-trained language model GPT2 can generate better continuations by learning to generate the \eop in the fine-tuning stage. Experimental results on English story generation show that \eop can lead to higher BLEU score and lower \eos perplexity. We also conduct experiments on a self-collected Chinese essay dataset with Chinese-GPT2, a character level LM without \eop or \eos during pre-training. Experimental results show that the Chinese GPT2 can generate better essay endings with \eop.

M6: A Chinese Multimodal Pretrainer

In this work, we construct the largest dataset for multimodal pretraining in Chinese, which consists of over 1.9TB images and 292GB texts that cover a wide range of domains. We propose a cross-modal pretraining method called M6, referring to Multi-Modality to Multi-Modality Multitask Mega-transformer, for unified pretraining on the data of single modality and multiple modalities. We scale the model size up to 10 billion and 100 billion parameters, and build the largest pretrained model in Chinese. We apply the model to a series of downstream applications, and demonstrate its outstanding performance in comparison with strong baselines. Furthermore, we specifically design a downstream task of text-guided image generation, and show that the finetuned M6 can create high-quality images with high resolution and abundant details.

Unveiling non-Abelian statistics of vortex Majorana bound states in iron-based superconductors using fermionic modes

Motivated by the recent experiments that reported the discovery of vortex Majorana bound states (vMBSs) in iron-based superconductors, we establish a portable scheme to unveil the non-Abelian statistics of vMBSs using normal fermionic modes. The unique non-Abelian statistics of vMBSs is characterized by the charge flip signal of the fermions that can be easily read out through the charge sensing measurement. In particular, the charge flip signal will be significantly suppressed for strong hybridized vMBSs or trivial vortex modes, which efficiently identifies genuine vMBSs. To eliminate the error induced by the unnecessary dynamical evolution of the fermionic modes, we further propose a correction strategy by continually reversing the energy of the fermions, reminiscent of the quantum Zeno effect. Finally, we establish a feasible protocol to perform non-Abelian braiding operations on vMBSs.

Cyclotron dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a quadruple-well potential with synthetic gauge fields

We investigate the cyclotron dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a quadruple-well potential with synthetic gauge fields. We use laser-assisted tunneling to generate large tunable effective magnetic fields for BEC. The mean position of BEC follows an orbit that simulated the cyclotron orbits of charged particles in a magnetic field. In the absence of atomic interaction, atom dynamics may exhibit periodic or quasi-periodic cyclotron orbits. In the presence of atomic interaction, the system may exhibit self-trapping, which depends on synthetic gauge fields and atomic interaction strength. In particular, the competition between synthetic gauge fields and atomic interaction leads to the generation of several discontinuous parameter windows for the transition to self-trapping, which is obviously different from that without synthetic gauge fields.
