On indecomposable exceptional modules over gentle algebras

We give a characterization of indecomposable exceptional modules over finite dimensional gentle algebras. As an application, we study gentle algebras arising from an unpunctured surface and show that a class of indecomposable modules related to curves without selfintersections, as exceptional modules, are uniquely determined by their dimension vectors.

Secondary Waves, and/or the "Reflection" From and "Transmission" Through a Coronal Hole of an EUV Wave Associated With the 2011 February 15 X2.2 Flare Observed With SDO/AIA and STEREO/EUVI

For the first time, the kinematic evolution of a coronal wave over the entire solar surface is studied. Full Sun maps can be made by combining images from the Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory satellites, Ahead and Behind, and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, thanks to the wide angular separation between them. We study the propagation of a coronal wave, also known as "EIT" wave, and its interaction with a coronal hole resulting in secondary waves and/or reflection and transmission. We explore the possibility of the wave obeying the law of reflection of waves. In a detailed example we find that a loop arcade at the coronal hole boundary cascades and oscillates as a result of the EUV wave passage and triggers a wave directed eastwards that appears to have reflected. We find that the speed of this wave decelerates to an asymptotic value, which is less than half of the primary EUV wave speed. Thanks to the full Sun coverage we are able to determine that part of the primary wave is transmitted through the coronal hole. This is the first observation of its kind. The kinematic measurements of the reflected and transmitted wave tracks are consistent with a fast-mode MHD wave interpretation. Eventually, all wave tracks decelerate and disappear at a distance. A possible scenario of the whole process is that the wave is initially driven by the expanding coronal mass ejection and subsequently decouples from the driver and then propagates at the local fast-mode speed.

Cotorsion pairs in the cluster category of a marked surface

We study extension spaces, cotorsion pairs and their mutations in the cluster category of a marked surface without punctures. Under the one-to-one correspondence between the curves, valued closed curves in the marked surface and the indecomposable objects in the associated cluster category, we prove that the dimension of extension space of two indecomposable objects in the cluster categories equals to the intersection number of the corresponding curves. By using this result, we prove that there are no non-trivial $t-$structures in the cluster categories when the surface is connected. Based on this result, we give a classification of cotorsion pairs in these categories. Moreover we define the notion of paintings of a marked surface without punctures and their rotations. They are a geometric model of cotorsion pairs and of their mutations respectively.

A note on the bivariate distribution representation of two perfectly correlated random variables by Dirac's $δ$-function

In this paper we discuss the representation of the joint probability density function of perfectly correlated continuous random variables, i.e., with correlation coefficients $ρ=pm1$, by Dirac's $δ$-function. We also show how this representation allows to define Dirac's $δ$-function as the ratio between bivariate distributions and the marginal distribution in the limit $ρ\rightarrow \pm1$, whenever this limit exists. We illustrate this with the example of the bivariate Rice distribution

Multiscale characterization of recurrence-based phase space networks constructed from time series

Recently, a framework for analyzing time series by constructing an associated complex network has attracted significant research interest. One of the advantages of the complex network method for studying time series is that complex network theory provides a tool to describe either important nodes, or structures that exist in the networks, at different topological scale. This can then provide distinct information for time series of different dynamical systems. In this paper, we systematically investigate the recurrence-based phase space network of order $k$ that has previously been used to specify different types of dynamics in terms of the motif ranking from a different perspective. Globally, we find that the network size scales with different scale exponents and the degree distribution follows a quasi-symmetric bell shape around the value of $2k$ with different values of degree variance from periodic to chaotic Rössler systems. Local network properties such as the vertex degree, the clustering coefficients and betweenness centrality are found to be sensitive to the local stability of the orbits and hence contain complementary information.

Plasmoid ejection and secondary current sheet generation from magnetic reconnection in laser-plasma interaction

Reconnection of the self-generated magnetic fields in laser-plasma interaction was first investigated experimentally by Nilson {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. 97, 255001 (2006)] by shining two laser pulses a distance apart on a solid target layer. An elongated current sheet (CS) was observed in the plasma between the two laser spots. In order to more closely model magnetotail reconnection, here two side-by-side thin target layers, instead of a single one, are used. It is found that at one end of the elongated CS a fan-like electron outflow region including three well-collimated electron jets appears. The ($>1$ MeV) tail of the jet energy distribution exhibits a power-law scaling. The enhanced electron acceleration is attributed to the intense inductive electric field in the narrow electron dominated reconnection region, as well as additional acceleration as they are trapped inside the rapidly moving plasmoid formed in and ejected from the CS. The ejection also induces a secondary CS.

Quaternary-singlet State of Spin-1 Bosons in Optical Lattice

We present the quantum ground state properties of $^{23}$Na spinor condensates, which is confined in a periodic or double-well potential and subject to a magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between nearby wells. A novel singlet state arise in the system and can be discussed in explicit form. Caused by the competition between the intra-site spin exchange interactions and the inter-site dipole-dipole interactions, this quaternary-singlet\ state is a entangled state formed by at lest four particles and vanish the total spin. This is distinct from the direct product of the two conventional singlet pairs.

Research of the active reflector antenna using laser angle metrology system

Active reflector is one of the key technologies for constructing large telescopes, especially for the millimeter/sub-millimeter radio telescopes. This article introduces a new efficient laser angle metrology system for the active reflector antenna of the large radio telescopes, with a plenty of active reflector experiments mainly about the detecting precisions and the maintaining of the surface shape in real time, on the 65-meter radio telescope prototype constructed by Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics and Technology (NIAOT). The test results indicate that the accuracy of the surface shape segmenting and maintaining is up to micron dimension, and the time-response can be of the order of minutes. Therefore, it is proved to be workable for the sub-millimeter radio telescopes.

Faber-Krahn type inequality for unicyclic graphs

The Faber-Krahn inequality states that the ball has minimal first Dirichlet eigenvalue among all bounded domains with the fixed volume in $\mathbb{R}^n$. In this paper, we investigate the similar inequality for unicyclic graphs. The results show that the Faber-Krahn type inequality also holds for unicyclic graphs with a given graphic unicyclic degree sequence with minor conditions.

Increased Coupling in the Saliency Network is the main cause/effect of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

To uncover the underlying mechanisms of mental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) for improving both early diagnosis and therapy, it is increasingly recognized that we need a better understanding of how the brain's functional connections are altered. A new brain wide association study (BWAS) has been developed and used to investigate functional connectivity changes in the brains of patients suffering from ADHD using resting state fMRI data. To reliably find out the most significantly altered functional connectivity links and associate them with ADHD, a meta-analysis on a cohort of ever reported largest population comprising 249 patients and 253 healthy controls is carried out. The greatest change in ADHD patients was the increased coupling of the saliency network involving the anterior cingulate gyrus and anterior insula. A voxel-based morphometry analysis was also carried out but this revealed no evidence in the ADHD patients for altered grey matter volumes in the regions showing altered functional connectivity. This is the first evidence for the involvement of the saliency network in ADHD and it suggests that this may reflect increased sensitivity over the integration of the incoming sensory information and his/her own thoughts and the network as a switch is bias towards to the central executive network.

Enhanced Inter-Cell Interference Coordination Challenges in Heterogeneous Networks

3GPP LTE-Advanced has started a new study item to investigate Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) deployments as a cost effective way to deal with the unrelenting traffic demand. HetNets consist of a mix of macrocells, remote radio heads, and low-power nodes such as picocells, femtocells, and relays. Leveraging network topology, increasing the proximity between the access network and the end-users, has the potential to provide the next significant performance leap in wireless networks, improving spatial spectrum reuse and enhancing indoor coverage. Nevertheless, deployment of a large number of small cells overlaying the macrocells is not without new technical challenges. In this article, we present the concept of heterogeneous networks and also describe the major technical challenges associated with such network architecture. We focus in particular on the standardization activities within the 3GPP related to enhanced inter-cell interference coordination.

Analysis and improvement of a strongly secure certificateless key exchange protocol without pairing

Recently, Yang and Tan proposed a certificateless key exchange protocol without pairing, and claimed their scheme satisfies forward secrecy, which means no adversary could derive an already-established session key unless the full user secret keys (including a private key and an ephemeral secret key) of both communication parties are compromised. However, in this paper, we point out their protocol is actually not secure as claimed by presenting an attack launched by an adversary who has learned the private key of one party and the ephemeral secret key of the other, but not the full user secret keys of both parties. Furthermore, to make up this flaw, we also provide an improved protocol in which the private key and the ephemeral secret key are closely intertwined with each other for generating the session key, thus above attack can be efficiently resisted.

Unfolding Substructures of Complex Networks by Coupling Chaotic Oscillators beyond Global Synchronization Regime

In the past decade, synchronization on complex networks has attracted increasing attentions from various research disciplines. Most previous works, however, focus only on the dynamic behaviors of synchronization process in the stable region, i.e., global synchronization. In this letter, we demonstrate that synchronization process on complex networks can efficiently reveal the substructures of networks when the coupling strength of chaotic oscillators is under the lower boundary of stable region. Both analytic and numerical results show that the nodes belonging to the same component in the hierarchical network are tightly clustered according to the Euclidean distances between the state vectors of the corresponding oscillators, and different levels of hierarchy can be systematically unfolded by gradually tuning the coupling strength. When the coupling strengths exceed the upper boundary of stable region, the hierarchy of the network cannot be recognized by this approach. Extensive simulations suggest that our method may provide a powerful tool to detect the hierarchical community structure of complex systems and deep insight into the relationship between structure and dynamics of complex systems.

Statistical Study of Coronal Mass Ejection Source Locations: II. Role of Active Regions in CME Production

This is the second paper of the statistical study of coronal mass ejection (CME) source locations, in which the relationship between CMEs and active regions (ARs) is statistically studied on the basis of the information of CME source locations and the ARs automatically extracted from magnetic synoptic charts of Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) during 1997 -- 1998. It is found that about 63% of the CMEs are related with ARs, at least about 53% of the ARs produced one or more CMEs, and particularly about 14% of ARs are CME-rich (3 or more CMEs were generated) during one transit across the visible disk. Several issues are then tried to clarify: whether or not the CMEs originating from ARs are distinct from others, whether or not the CME kinematics depend on AR properties, and whether or not the CME productivity depends on AR properties. The statistical results suggest that (1) there is no evident difference between AR-related and non-AR-related CMEs in terms of CME speed, acceleration and width, (2) the size, strength and complexity of ARs do little with the kinematic properties of CMEs, but have significant effects on the CME productivity, and (3) the sunspots in all the most productive ARs at least belong to $βγ$ type, whereas 90% of those in CME-less ARs are $α$ or $β$ type only. A detailed analysis on CME-rich ARs further reveals that (1) the distribution of the waiting time of same-AR CMEs, consists of two parts with a separation at about 15 hours, which implies that the CMEs with a waiting time shorter than 15 hours are probably truly physical related, and (2) an AR tends to produce such related same-AR CMEs at a pace of 8 hours, but cannot produce two or more fast CMEs (>800 km/s) within a time interval of 15 hours. This interesting phenomenon is particularly discussed.

Optimizing and controlling functions of complex networks by manipulating rich-club connections

Traditionally, there is no evidence suggesting that there are strong ties between the rich-club property and the function of complex networks. In this study, we find that whether a very small portion of rich nodes connected to each other or not can strongly affect the frequency of occurrence of basic building blocks (motif) within networks, and therefore the function, of a heterogeneous network. Conversely whether a homogeneous network has a rich-club property or not generally has no significant effect on its structure and function. These findings open the possibility to optimize and control the function of complex networks by manipulating rich-club connections. Furthermore, based on the subgraph ratio profile, we develop a more rigorous approach to judge whether a network has a rich-club or not. The new method does not calculate how many links there are among rich nodes but depends on how the links among rich nodes can affect the overall structure as well as function of a given network. These results can also help us to understand the evolution of dynamical networks and design new models for characterizing real-world networks.

Omni-tomography/Multi-tomography -- Integrating Multiple Modalities for Simultaneous Imaging

Current tomographic imaging systems need major improvements, especially when multi-dimensional, multi-scale, multi-temporal and multi-parametric phenomena are under investigation. Both preclinical and clinical imaging now depend on in vivo tomography, often requiring separate evaluations by different imaging modalities to define morphologic details, delineate interval changes due to disease or interventions, and study physiological functions that have interconnected aspects. Over the past decade, fusion of multimodality images has emerged with two different approaches: post-hoc image registration and combined acquisition on PET-CT, PET-MRI and other hybrid scanners. There are intrinsic limitations for both the post-hoc image analysis and dual/triple modality approaches defined by registration errors and physical constraints in the acquisition chain. We envision that tomography will evolve beyond current modality fusion and towards grand fusion, a large scale fusion of all or many imaging modalities, which may be referred to as omni-tomography or multi-tomography. Unlike modality fusion, grand fusion is here proposed for truly simultaneous but often localized reconstruction in terms of all or many relevant imaging mechanisms such as CT, MRI, PET, SPECT, US, optical, and possibly more. In this paper, the technical basis for omni-tomography is introduced and illustrated with a top-level design of a next generation scanner, interior tomographic reconstructions of representative modalities, and anticipated applications of omni-tomography.

A module-theoretic interpretation of Schiffler's expansion formula

We give a module-theoretic interpretation of Schiffler's expansion formula which is defined combinatorially in terms of complete (T,r)-paths in order to get the expansion of the cluster variables in the cluster algebra of a marked surface (S,M). Based on the geometric description of the indecomposable objects of the cluster category of the marked surface (S,M), we show the coincidence of Schiffler-Thomas' expansion formula and the cluster character defined by Palu.

Interspecies singlet pairing in a mixture of two spin-1 Bose condensates

We study the ground state properties of a mixture formed by two spin-1 condensates in the absence of an external magnetic field. As the collisional symmetry between interspecies bosonic atoms is broken, the interspecies coupling interaction ($β$) and interspecies singlet pairing interaction ($γ$) arise. The ground state can be calculated using the angular momentum theory analytically for $γ=0$. The full quantum approach of exact diagonalization is adopted numerically to consider the more general case as $γ\neq 0$. We illustrate the competition between the two interspecies interactions and find that as singlet pairing interaction dominates (or the total spin vanishes), there are still different types of singlet formations which are well determined by $β$.
