Tensor products and Correlation Estimates with applications to Nonlinear Schrödinger equations

We prove new interaction Morawetz type (correlation) estimates in one and two dimensions. In dimension two the estimate corresponds to the nonlinear diagonal analogue of Bourgain's bilinear refinement of Strichartz. For the 2d case we provide a proof in two different ways. First, we follow the original approach of Lin and Strauss but applied to tensor products of solutions. We then demonstrate the proof using commutator vector operators acting on the conservation laws of the equation. This method can be generalized to obtain correlation estimates in all dimensions. In one dimension we use the Gauss-Weierstrass summability method acting on the conservation laws. We then apply the 2d estimate to nonlinear Schrödinger equations and derive a direct proof of Nakanishi's $H^1$ scattering result for every $L^{2}$-supercritical nonlinearity. We also prove scattering below the energy space for a certain class of $L^{2}$-supercritical equations.

Energy Critical NLS in two space dimensions

We investigate the initial value problem for a defocusing nonlinear Schrödingerequation with exponential nonlinearity. We identify subcritical, critical and supercritical regimes in the energy space. We establish global well-posedness in the subcritical and critical regimes. Well-posedness fails to hold in the supercritical case.

Multilinear estimates for periodic KdV equations and applications

We prove an endpoint multilinear estimate for the $X^{s,b}$ spaces associated to the periodic Airy equation. As a consequence we obtain sharp local well-posedness results for periodic generalized KdV equations, as well as some global well-posedness results below the energy norm. In particular we prove a multilinear estimate which completes the proof of global well-posedness for periodic KdV in a preceding paper (math.AP/0110045) down to the optimal regularity H^{-1/2}.

Low regularity global well-posedness for the Zakharov and Klein-Gordon-Schrödinger systems

We prove low-regularity global well-posedness for the 1d Zakharov system and 3d Klein-Gordon-Schrödinger system, which are systems in two variables $u:\mathbb{R}_x^d\times \mathbb{R}_t \to \mathbb{C}$ and $n:\mathbb{R}^d_x\times \mathbb{R}_t\to \mathbb{R}$. The Zakharov system is known to be locally well-posed in $(u,n)\in L^2\times H^{-1/2}$ and the Klein-Gordon-Schrödinger system is known to be locally well-posed in $(u,n)\in L^2\times L^2$. Here, we show that the Zakharov and Klein-Gordon-Schrödinger systems are globally well-posed in these spaces, respectively, by using an available conservation law for the $L^2$ norm of $u$ and controlling the growth of $n$ via the estimates in the local theory.

Global well-posedness and scattering for the energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation in R^3

We obtain global well-posedness, scattering, and global $L^{10}_{t,x}$ spacetime bounds for energy-class solutions to the quintic defocusing Schrödinger equation in $\R^{1+3}$, which is energy-critical. In particular, this establishes global existence of classical solutions. Our work extends the results of Bourgain and Grillakis, which handled the radial case. The method is similar in spirit to the induction-on-energy strategy of Bourgain, but we perform the induction analysis in both frequency space and physical space simultaneously, and replace the Morawetz inequality by an interaction variant. The principal advantage of the interaction Morawetz estimate is that it is not localized to the spatial origin and so is better able to handle nonradial solutions. In particular, this interaction estimate, together with an almost-conservation argument controlling the movement of $L^2$ mass in frequency space, rules out the possibility of energy concentration.

Ground state mass concentration in the L^2-critical nonlinear Schrodinger equation below H^1

We consider finite time blowup solutions of the $L^2$-critical cubic focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation on $\R^2$. Such functions, when in $H^1$, are known to concentrate a fixed $L^2$-mass (the mass of the ground state) at the point of blowup. Blowup solutions from initial data that is only in $L^2$ are known to concentrate at least a small amount of mass. In this paper we consider the intermediate case of blowup solutions from initial data in $H^s$, with $1 > s > s_Q$, where $s_Q \le \sQ$. Our main result is that such solutions, when radially symmetric, concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the origin at blowup time.

Polynomial upper bounds for the orbital instability of the 1D cubic NLS below the energy norm

We study the long-time behaviour of the focusing cubic NLS on $\R$ in the Sobolev norms $H^s$ for $0 < s < 1$. We obtain polynomial growth-type upper bounds on the $H^s$ norms, and also limit any orbital $H^s$ instability of the ground state to polynomial growth at worst; this is a partial analogue of the $H^1$ orbital stability result of Weinstein. In the sequel to this paper we generalize this result to other nonlinear Schrödinger equations. Our arguments are based on the ``$I$-method'' from our earlier papers, which pushes down from the energy norm, as well as an ``upside-down $I$-method'' which pushes up from the $L^2$ norm.
