$L_p$-Blaschke Valuations

In this article, a classification of continuous, linearly intertwining, symmetric $L_p$-Blaschke ($p>1$) valuations is established as an extension of Haberl's work on Blaschke valuations. More precisely, we show that for dimensions $n\geq 3$, the only continuous, linearly intertwining, normalized symmetric $L_p$-Blaschke valuation is the normalized $L_p$-curvature image operator, while for dimension $n = 2 $, a rotated normalized $L_p$-curvature image operator is an only additional one. One of the advantages of our approach is that we deal with normalized symmetric $L_p$-Blaschke valuations, which makes it possible to handle the case $p=n$. The cases where $p \not =n$ are also discussed by studying the relations between symmetric $L_p$-Blaschke valuations and normalized ones.

The China Jinping Underground Laboratory and its Early Science

The China Jinping Underground Laboratory, inaugurated in 2010, is an underground research facility with the deepest rock overburden and largest space by volume in the world. The first-generation science programs include dark matter searches conducted by the CDEX and PandaX experiments. These activities are complemented by measurements of ambient radioactivity and installation of low-background counting systems. Phase II of the facility is being constructed, and its potential research projects are being formulated. In this review, we discuss the history, key features, results, and status of this facility and its experimental programs, as well as their future evolution and plans.

Very high frequency gravitational waves from magnetars and gamma-ray burst

Extremely powerful astrophysical electromagnetic (EM) system could be possible source of high-frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs). Here based on properties of magnetars and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), we address "Gamma-HFGWs" (with very high-frequency around 10^{20}Hz) caused by ultra-strong EM radiations (in the radiation-dominated phase of GRBs fireball) interacting with super-high magnetar surface magnetic fields (around 10^{11}Tesla). By certain parameters of distance and power, the Gamma-HFGWs would have far field energy density around 10^{-6}, and they would cause perturbed signal EM waves of around 10^{-20}Watt/m^2 in planned HFGW detection system based on EM response to GWs. Specially, Gamma-HFGWs would possess distinctive envelopes with characteristic shapes depending on the particular structures of surface magnetic fields of magnetars, which could be exclusive features helpful to distinguish them from background noise. Results obtained suggest that magnetars could involve in possible astrophysical EM sources of GWs in very high-frequency band, and Gamma-HFGWs would be potential targets for observations in the future.

Graphdiyne Nanoribbons with Open Hexagonal Rings: Existence of Topological Unprotected Edge States

Using first principles calculations, we studied a new class of graphdiyne nanoribbons (GDYNR) with open hexagonal rings on the edges. To avoid the effects from dangling bond, hydrogen or oxygen atoms were absorbed on the edges. There are two kinds of GDYNR depending on the edge structures, armchair and zigzag. The electronic structures show that all of them are semiconductors. The band gap can be tuned by the width of GDYNR. As the width of nanoribbons increases, the energy gap decreases firstly and then increases, and reaches a minimum gap for both kinds. To understand the intriguing phenomenon, we constructed a tight-binding model for GDYNR and found that the existence of the minimum of the energy gap is due to the competition between the interaction within the two edges and the coupling in between. Furthermore, topological unprotected edge states are found in the band structure of a semi-infinite system by calculating surface Green's function. If GDYNR could be synthesized in experiments, it would be useful for the nanodevices in the future.

Zero-Shot Learning by Generating Pseudo Feature Representations

Zero-shot learning (ZSL) is a challenging task aiming at recognizing novel classes without any training instances. In this paper we present a simple but high-performance ZSL approach by generating pseudo feature representations (GPFR). Given the dataset of seen classes and side information of unseen classes (e.g. attributes), we synthesize feature-level pseudo representations for novel concepts, which allows us access to the formulation of unseen class predictor. Firstly we design a Joint Attribute Feature Extractor (JAFE) to acquire understandings about attributes, then construct a cognitive repository of attributes filtered by confidence margins, and finally generate pseudo feature representations using a probability based sampling strategy to facilitate subsequent training process of class predictor. We demonstrate the effectiveness in ZSL settings and the extensibility in supervised recognition scenario of our method on a synthetic colored MNIST dataset (C-MNIST). For several popular ZSL benchmark datasets, our approach also shows compelling results on zero-shot recognition task, especially leading to tremendous improvement to state-of-the-art mAP on zero-shot retrieval task.

The first result on 76Ge neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment

We report the first result on Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay from CDEX-1 experiment at China Jinping Underground Laboratory. A mass of 994 g p-type point-contact high purity germanium detector has been installed to search the neutrinoless double beta decay events, as well as to directly detect dark matter particles. An exposure of 304 kg*day has been analyzed. The wideband spectrum from 500 keV to 3 MeV was obtained and the average event rate at the 2.039 MeV energy range is about 0.012 count per keV per kg per day. The half-life of Ge-76 neutrinoless double beta decay has been derived based on this result as: T 1/2 > 6.4*10^22 yr (90% C.L.). An upper limit on the effective Majorana-neutrino mass of 5.0 eV has been achieved. The possible methods to further decrease the background level have been discussed and will be pursued in the next stage of CDEX experiment.

Weakly- and Semi-Supervised Object Detection with Expectation-Maximization Algorithm

Object detection when provided image-level labels instead of instance-level labels (i.e., bounding boxes) during training is an important problem in computer vision, since large scale image datasets with instance-level labels are extremely costly to obtain. In this paper, we address this challenging problem by developing an Expectation-Maximization (EM) based object detection method using deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Our method is applicable to both the weakly-supervised and semi-supervised settings. Extensive experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 benchmark show that (1) in the weakly supervised setting, our method provides significant detection performance improvement over current state-of-the-art methods, (2) having access to a small number of strongly (instance-level) annotated images, our method can almost match the performace of the fully supervised Fast RCNN. We share our source code at https://github.com/ZiangYan/EM-WSD.

Gravitational Quasinormal Modes of Regular Phantom Black Hole

We investigate the gravitational quasi-normal modes (QNMs) for a type of regular black hole (BH) known as phantom BH, which is a static self-gravitating solution of a minimally coupled phantom scalar field with a potential. The studies are carried out for three different spacetimes: asymptotically flat, de Sitter (dS), and anti de Sitter (AdS). In order to consider the standard odd parity and even parity of gravitational perturbations, the corresponding master equations are derived. The QNMs are discussed by evaluating the temporal evolution of the perturbation field which, in turn, provides direct information on the stability of BH spacetime. It is found that in asymptotically flat, dS and AdS spacetimes, the gravitational perturbations have similar characteristics for both odd and even parities. The decay rate of perturbation is strongly dependent on the scale parameter $b$, which measures the coupling strength between phantom scalar field and the gravity. Furthermore, through the analysis of Hawking radiation, it is shown that the thermodynamics of such regular phantom BH is also influenced by $b$. The obtained results might shed some light on the quantum interpretation of QNM perturbation.

Linear Codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]/(x^2)$ and $GR(p^2,m)$ Reaching the Griesmer Bound

We construct two series of linear codes over finite ring $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]/(x^2)$ and Galois ring $GR(p^2,m)$ respectively reaching the Griesmer bound. They derive two series of codes over finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ by Gray map. The first series of codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ derived from $\mathbb{F}_{q}[x]/(x^2)$ are linear and also reach the Griesmer bound in some cases. Many of linear codes over finite field we constructed have two Hamming (non-zero) weights.

Counting unstable eigenvalues in Hamiltonian spectral problems via commuting operators

We present a general counting result for the unstable eigenvalues of linear operators of the form $JL$ in which $J$ and $L$ are skew- and self-adjoint operators, respectively. Assuming that there exists a self-adjoint operator $K$ such that the operators $JL$ and $JK$ commute, we prove that the number of unstable eigenvalues of $JL$ is bounded by the number of nonpositive eigenvalues of~$K$. As an application, we discuss the transverse stability of one-dimensional periodic traveling waves in the classical KP-II (Kadomtsev--Petviashvili) equation. We show that these one-dimensional periodic waves are transversely spectrally stable with respect to general two-dimensional bounded perturbations, including periodic and localized perturbations in either the longitudinal or the transverse direction, and that they are transversely linearly stable with respect to doubly periodic perturbations.

Construction of Cyclic and Constacyclic Codes for b-symbol Read Channels Meeting the Plotkin-like Bound

The symbol-pair codes over finite fields have been raised for symbol-pair read channels and motivated by application of high-density data storage technologies [1, 2]. Their generalization is the code for b-symbol read channels (b > 2). Many MDS codes for b-symbol read channels have been constructed which meet the Singleton-like bound ([3, 4, 10] for b = 2 and [11] for b > 2). In this paper we show the Plotkin-like bound and present a construction on irreducible cyclic codes and constacyclic codes meeting the Plotkin-like bound.

Letter of Intent: Jinping Neutrino Experiment

Jinping Neutrino Experiment (Jinping) is proposed to significantly improve measurements on solar neutrinos and geoneutrinos in China Jinping Laboratory - a lab with a number of unparalleled features, thickest overburden, lowest reactor neutrino background, etc., which identify it as the world-best low-energy neutrino laboratory. The proposed experiment will have target mass of 4 kilotons of liquid scintillator or water-based liquid scintillator, with a fiducial mass of 2 kilotons for neutrino-electron scattering events and 3 kilotons for inverse-beta interaction events. A number of initial sensitivities studies have been carried out, including on the transition phase for the solar neutrinos oscillation from the vacuum to the matter effect, the discovery of solar neutrinos from the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen (CNO) cycle, the resolution of the high and low metallicity hypotheses, and the unambiguous separation on U and Th cascade decays from the dominant crustal anti-electron neutrinos in China.

Resonance of Gaussian electromagnetic field to the high frequency gravitational waves

We consider a Gaussian Beam (GB) resonant system for high frequency gravitational waves (HFGWs) detection. At present, we find the optimal signal strength in theory through setting the magnetic component of GB in a standard gaussian form. Under the synchro-resonance condition, we study the signal strength (i.e., transverse perturbative photon fluxes) from the relic HFGWs (predicted by ordinary inflationary model) and the braneworld HFGWs (from braneworld scenarios). Both of them would generate potentially detectable transverse perturbative photon fluxes (PPFs). Furthermore we find optimal system parameters and the relationship between frequency and effective width of energy fluxes accumulation.

Linear Codes over Galois Ring $GR(p^2,r)$ Related to Gauss sums

Linear codes over finite rings become one of hot topics in coding theory after Hommons et al.([4], 1994) discovered that several remarkable nonlinear binary codes with some linear-like properties are the images of Gray map of linear codes over $Z_4$. In this paper we consider two series of linear codes $C(G)$ and $\widetilde{C}(G)$ over Galois ring $R=GR(p^2,r)$, where $G$ is a subgroup of $R^{(s)^*}$ and $R^{(s)}=GR(p^2,rs)$. We present a general formula on $N_β(a)$ in terms of Gauss sums on $R^{(s)}$ for each $a\in R$, where $N_β(a)$ is the number of a-component of the codeword $c_β\in C(G) (β\in R^{(s)})$ (Theorem 3.1). We have determined the complete Hamming weight distribution of $C(G)$ and the minimum Hamming distance of $\widetilde{C}(G)$ for some special G (Theorem 3.3 and 3.4). We show a general formula on homogeneous weight of codewords in $C(G)$ and $\widetilde{C}(G)$ (Theorem 4.5) for the special $G$ given in Theorem 3.4. Finally we obtained series of nonlinear codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q} \ (q=p^r)$ with two Hamming distance by using Gray map (Corollary 4.6).

New Boys and Girls in Phosphorene Family from Gene Recombination: Different from Parents, Excellent than Parents

Based on the crystal structures of the previously proposed low energy phosphorene allotropes η-P and θ-P (Nano. Lett. 2015, 15, 3557), we propose five new structural stable phosphorene boys (XX-XY or XY-XY) and girls (XX-XX) through gene (XY from η-P and XX from θ-P) recombination methods. All of these five new phosphorene allotropes are obviously different from their parents, showing very different and fascinating two-dimensional patterns between each other. The dynamical stabilities of these phosphorene allotropes are confirmed positive and some of them are confirmed energetically more favorable than their parents (η-P and θ-P). Especially, the XX-XX type girl G1-P is confirmed energetically more favorable than all the previously proposed phosphorene allotropes, including black phosphorene (α-P, ACS Nano, 2014, 8, 4033) and blue phosphorene (β-P, Phys. Rev. Lett. 2014, 112, 176802), which is expected to be synthesized in future experiment through vapor deposition. Our results show that such a new promising phosphorene allotrope G1-P is an excellent candidate for potential applications in nano-electronics according to its middle band gap about 1.58 eV from DFT-HSE06 calculation.

Dark Matter Directionality Revisited with a High Pressure Xenon Gas Detector

An observation of the anisotropy of dark matter interactions in a direction-sensitive detector would provide decisive evidence for the discovery of galactic dark matter. Directional information would also provide a crucial input to understanding its distribution in the local Universe. Most of the existing directional dark matter detectors utilize particle tracking methods in a low-pressure gas time projection chamber. These low pressure detectors require excessively large volumes in order to be competitive in the search for physics beyond the current limit. In order to avoid these volume limitations, we consider a novel proposal, which exploits a columnar recombination effect in a high-pressure gas time projection chamber. The ratio of scintillation to ionization signals observed in the detector carries the angular information of the particle interactions. In this paper, we investigate the sensitivity of a future directional detector focused on the proposed high-pressure Xenon gas time projection chamber. We study the prospect of detecting an anisotropy in the dark matter velocity distribution. We find that tens of events are needed to exclude an isotropic distribution of dark matter interactions at 95% confidence level in the most optimistic case with head-to-tail information. However, one needs at least 10-20 times more events without head-to-tail information for light dark matter below 50 GeV. For an intermediate mass range, we find it challenging to observe an anisotropy of the dark matter distribution. Our results also show that the directional information significantly improves precision measurements of dark matter mass and the elastic scattering cross section for a heavy dark matter.

Two dimensional topological insulators with tunable band gaps: HgTe and HgSe monolayers

Employing ab initio electronic calculations, we propose a new type of two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator (TI), monolayer (ML) low buckled (LB) mercury telluride (HgTe) and mercury selenide (HgSe), with tunable band gaps. Monolayer LB HgTe undergoes a transition to a topological nontrivial phase under the appropriate in-plane tensile strain (ε > 2.6%) due to the combination effects of strain and spin orbital coupling (SOC). Under the 2.6%< ε <4.2% tensile strain, the band inversion and topological nontrivial gap are induced by the SOC. For ε >4.2%, the band inversion is already realized by strain but the topological gap is induced by SOC. The band gap of monolayer LB HgTe TI phase can be tuned over a wide range from 0 eV to 0.20 eV as the tensile strain increases from 2.6% to 7.4%. Similarly, the topological phase transition of monolayer LB HgSe is induced by strain and SOC as the strain ε >3.1%. The topological band gap can be 0.05 eV as the strain increases to about 4.6%. The large band gap of 2D LB HgTe and HgSe monolayers make this type of material suitable for practical applications at room-temperature.
