Optimal reinsurance/investment problems for general insurance models

In this paper the utility optimization problem for a general insurance model is studied. The reserve process of the insurance company is described by a stochastic differential equation driven by a Brownian motion and a Poisson random measure, representing the randomness from the financial market and the insurance claims, respectively. The random safety loading and stochastic interest rates are allowed in the model so that the reserve process is non-Markovian in general. The insurance company can manage the reserves through both portfolios of the investment and a reinsurance policy to optimize a certain utility function, defined in a generic way. The main feature of the problem lies in the intrinsic constraint on the part of reinsurance policy, which is only proportional to the claim-size instead of the current level of reserve, and hence it is quite different from the optimal investment/consumption problem with constraints in finance. Necessary and sufficient conditions for both well posedness and solvability will be given by modifying the ``duality method'' in finance and with the help of the solvability of a special type of backward stochastic differential equations.

Weak solutions for forward--backward SDEs--a martingale problem approach

In this paper, we propose a new notion of Forward--Backward Martingale Problem (FBMP), and study its relationship with the weak solution to the forward--backward stochastic differential equations (FBSDEs). The FBMP extends the idea of the well-known (forward) martingale problem of Stroock and Varadhan, but it is structured specifically to fit the nature of an FBSDE. We first prove a general sufficient condition for the existence of the solution to the FBMP. In the Markovian case with uniformly continuous coefficients, we show that the weak solution to the FBSDE (or equivalently, the solution to the FBMP) does exist. Moreover, we prove that the uniqueness of the FBMP (whence the uniqueness of the weak solution) is determined by the uniqueness of the viscosity solution of the corresponding quasilinear PDE.

State-dependent utility maximization in Lévy markets

We revisit Merton's portfolio optimization problem under boun-ded state-dependent utility functions, in a market driven by a Lévy process $Z$ extending results by Karatzas et. al. (1991) and Kunita (2003). The problem is solved using a dual variational problem as it is customarily done for non-Markovian models. One of the main features here is that the domain of the dual problem enjoys an explicit "parametrization", built on a multiplicative optional decomposition for nonnegative supermartingales due to Föllmer and Kramkov (1997). As a key step in obtaining the representation result we prove a closure property for integrals with respect to Poisson random measures, a result of interest on its own that extends the analog property for integrals with respect to a fixed semimartingale due to Mémin (1980). In the case that (i) the Lévy measure of $Z$ is atomic with a finite number of atoms or that (ii) $ΔS_{t}/S_{t^{-}}=ζ_{t} \vartheta(ΔZ_{t})$ for a process $ζ$ and a deterministic function $\vartheta$, we explicitly characterize the admissible trading strategies and show that the dual solution is a risk-neutral local martingale.

Stochastic control problems for systems driven by normal martingales

In this paper we study a class of stochastic control problems in which the control of the jump size is essential. Such a model is a generalized version for various applied problems ranging from optimal reinsurance selections for general insurance models to queueing theory. The main novel point of such a control problem is that by changing the jump size of the system, one essentially changes the type of the driving martingale. Such a feature does not seem to have been investigated in any existing stochastic control literature. We shall first provide a rigorous theoretical foundation for the control problem by establishing an existence result for the multidimensional structure equation on a Wiener--Poisson space, given an arbitrary bounded jump size control process; and by providing an auxiliary counterexample showing the nonuniqueness for such solutions. Based on these theoretical results, we then formulate the control problem and prove the Bellman principle, and derive the corresponding Hamilton--Jacobi--Bellman (HJB) equation, which in this case is a mixed second-order partial differential/difference equation. Finally, we prove a uniqueness result for the viscosity solution of such an HJB equation.

Representation Theorems for Quadratic ${\cal F}$-Consistent Nonlinear Expectations

In this paper we extend the notion of ``filtration-consistent nonlinear expectation" (or "${\cal F}$-consistent nonlinear expectation") to the case when it is allowed to be dominated by a $g$-expectation that may have a quadratic growth. We show that for such a nonlinear expectation many fundamental properties of a martingale can still make sense, including the Doob-Meyer type decomposition theorem and the optional sampling theorem. More importantly, we show that any quadratic ${\cal F}$-consistent nonlinear expectation with a certain domination property must be a quadratic $g$-expectation. The main contribution of this paper is the finding of the domination condition to replace the one used in all the previous works, which is no longer valid in the quadratic case. We also show that the representation generator must be deterministic, continuous, and actually must be of the simple form.
