RepoQA: Evaluating Long Context Code Understanding

Recent advances have been improving the context windows of Large Language Models (LLMs). To quantify the real long-context capabilities of LLMs, evaluators such as the popular Needle in a Haystack have been developed to test LLMs over a large chunk of raw texts. While effective, current evaluations overlook the insight of how LLMs work with long-context code, i.e., repositories. To this end, we initiate the RepoQA benchmark to evaluate LLMs on long-context code understanding. Traditional needle testers ask LLMs to directly retrieve the answer from the context without necessary deep understanding. In RepoQA, we built our initial task, namely Searching Needle Function (SNF), which exercises LLMs to search functions given their natural-language description, i.e., LLMs cannot find the desired function if they cannot understand the description and code. RepoQA is multilingual and comprehensive: it includes 500 code search tasks gathered from 50 popular repositories across 5 modern programming languages. By evaluating 26 general and code-specific LLMs on RepoQA, we show (i) there is still a small gap between the best open and proprietary models; (ii) different models are good at different languages; and (iii) models may understand code better without comments.

Diverse and Lifespan Facial Age Transformation Synthesis with Identity Variation Rationality Metric

Face aging has received continuous research attention over the past two decades. Although previous works on this topic have achieved impressive success, two longstanding problems remain unsettled: 1) generating diverse and plausible facial aging patterns at the target age stage; 2) measuring the rationality of identity variation between the original portrait and its syntheses with age progression or regression. In this paper, we introduce ${\rm{DLAT}}^{\boldsymbol{+}}$ to realize Diverse and Lifespan Age Transformation on human faces, where the diversity jointly manifests in the transformation of facial textures and shapes. Apart from the diversity mechanism embedded in the model, multiple consistency restrictions are leveraged to keep it away from counterfactual aging syntheses. Moreover, we propose a new metric to assess the rationality of Identity Deviation under Age Gaps (IDAG) between the input face and its series of age-transformed generations, which is based on statistical laws summarized from plenty of genuine face-aging data. Extensive experimental results demonstrate the uniqueness and effectiveness of our method in synthesizing diverse and perceptually reasonable faces across the whole lifetime.

Selective Noise Suppression Methods Using Random SVPWM to Shape the Noise Spectrum of PMSMs

Random pulse width modulation techniques are used in AC motors powered by two-level three-phase inverters, which cause a broadband spectrum of voltage, current, and electromagnetic force. The voltage distribution across a wide range of frequencies may increase the vibration and acoustic noise of motors. This study proposes two selective noise suppression (SNS) methods to eliminate voltage harmonics for specified frequencies. In the first method, the switching frequency is constant. The pulse position is calculated by the duty cycle of the current switching cycle. Both the pulse position and switching frequency are randomized in the second method. This involves creating a unique relationship among the switching frequency, pulse position, and duty cycle to shape the noise spectrum. Computer simulation and experimental results show that both methods effectively perform selective noise suppression at a specific frequency. The power spectrum density (PSD) using the second SNS method is more uniform near integer multiples of the switching frequency than that using random pulse width modulation techniques or the first SNS method. These methods provide a valuable reference for eliminating electromagnetic and acoustic noises at resonant frequencies in motors.

Efficient Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning by Planning

Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithms have accomplished remarkable breakthroughs in solving large-scale decision-making tasks. Nonetheless, most existing MARL algorithms are model-free, limiting sample efficiency and hindering their applicability in more challenging scenarios. In contrast, model-based reinforcement learning (MBRL), particularly algorithms integrating planning, such as MuZero, has demonstrated superhuman performance with limited data in many tasks. Hence, we aim to boost the sample efficiency of MARL by adopting model-based approaches. However, incorporating planning and search methods into multi-agent systems poses significant challenges. The expansive action space of multi-agent systems often necessitates leveraging the nearly-independent property of agents to accelerate learning. To tackle this issue, we propose the MAZero algorithm, which combines a centralized model with Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) for policy search. We design a novel network structure to facilitate distributed execution and parameter sharing. To enhance search efficiency in deterministic environments with sizable action spaces, we introduce two novel techniques: Optimistic Search Lambda (OS($λ$)) and Advantage-Weighted Policy Optimization (AWPO). Extensive experiments on the SMAC benchmark demonstrate that MAZero outperforms model-free approaches in terms of sample efficiency and provides comparable or better performance than existing model-based methods in terms of both sample and computational efficiency. Our code is available at https://github.com/liuqh16/MAZero.

Flexible Active Safety Motion Control for Robotic Obstacle Avoidance: A CBF-Guided MPC Approach

A flexible active safety motion (FASM) control approach is proposed for the avoidance of dynamic obstacles and the reference tracking in robot manipulators. The distinctive feature of the proposed method lies in its utilization of control barrier functions (CBF) to design flexible CBF-guided safety criteria (CBFSC) with dynamically optimized decay rates, thereby offering flexibility and active safety for robot manipulators in dynamic environments. First, discrete-time CBFs are employed to formulate the novel flexible CBFSC with dynamic decay rates for robot manipulators. Following that, the model predictive control (MPC) philosophy is applied, integrating flexible CBFSC as safety constraints into the receding-horizon optimization problem. Significantly, the decay rates of the designed CBFSC are incorporated as decision variables in the optimization problem, facilitating the dynamic enhancement of flexibility during the obstacle avoidance process. In particular, a novel cost function that integrates a penalty term is designed to dynamically adjust the safety margins of the CBFSC. Finally, experiments are conducted in various scenarios using a Universal Robots 5 (UR5) manipulator to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Guarding Force: Safety-Critical Compliant Control for Robot-Environment Interaction

In this study, we propose a safety-critical compliant control strategy designed to strictly enforce interaction force constraints during the physical interaction of robots with unknown environments. The interaction force constraint is interpreted as a new force-constrained control barrier function (FC-CBF) by exploiting the generalized contact model and the prior information of the environment, i.e., the prior stiffness and rest position, for robot kinematics. The difference between the real environment and the generalized contact model is approximated by constructing a tracking differentiator, and its estimation error is quantified based on Lyapunov theory. By interpreting strict interaction safety specification as a dynamic constraint, restricting the desired joint angular rates in kinematics, the proposed approach modifies nominal compliant controllers using quadratic programming, ensuring adherence to interaction force constraints in unknown environments. The strict force constraint and the stability of the closed-loop system are rigorously analyzed. Experimental tests using a UR3e industrial robot with different environments verify the effectiveness of the proposed method in achieving the force constraints in unknown environments.

Hydrologic Cycle Weakening in Hothouse Climates

The hydrologic cycle has wide impacts on the ocean salinity and circulation, carbon and nitrogen cycles, and the ecosystem. Under anthropogenic global warming, previous studies showed that the intensification of the hydrologic cycle is a robust feature. Whether this trend persists in hothouse climates, however, is unknown. Here we show in climate models that mean precipitation first increases with rising surface temperature, but the precipitation trend reverses when the surface is hotter than ~320-330 K. This non-monotonic phenomenon is robust to the cause of warming, convection scheme, ocean dynamics, atmospheric mass, planetary rotation, gravity, and stellar spectrum. The weakening occurs because of the existence of an upper limitation of outgoing longwave emission and the continuously increasing shortwave absorption by H2O, and is consistent with atmospheric dynamics featuring the strong increase of atmospheric stratification and dramatic reduction of convective mass flux. These results have wide implications for the climate evolutions of Earth, Venus, and potentially habitable exoplanets.

The Dawn of AI-Native EDA: Opportunities and Challenges of Large Circuit Models

Within the Electronic Design Automation (EDA) domain, AI-driven solutions have emerged as formidable tools, yet they typically augment rather than redefine existing methodologies. These solutions often repurpose deep learning models from other domains, such as vision, text, and graph analytics, applying them to circuit design without tailoring to the unique complexities of electronic circuits. Such an AI4EDA approach falls short of achieving a holistic design synthesis and understanding, overlooking the intricate interplay of electrical, logical, and physical facets of circuit data. This paper argues for a paradigm shift from AI4EDA towards AI-native EDA, integrating AI at the core of the design process. Pivotal to this vision is the development of a multimodal circuit representation learning technique, poised to provide a comprehensive understanding by harmonizing and extracting insights from varied data sources, such as functional specifications, RTL designs, circuit netlists, and physical layouts. We champion the creation of large circuit models (LCMs) that are inherently multimodal, crafted to decode and express the rich semantics and structures of circuit data, thus fostering more resilient, efficient, and inventive design methodologies. Embracing this AI-native philosophy, we foresee a trajectory that transcends the current innovation plateau in EDA, igniting a profound shift-left in electronic design methodology. The envisioned advancements herald not just an evolution of existing EDA tools but a revolution, giving rise to novel instruments of design tools that promise to radically enhance design productivity and inaugurate a new epoch where the optimization of circuit performance, power, and area (PPA) is achieved not incrementally, but through leaps that redefine the benchmarks of electronic systems' capabilities.

Improving Multi-Instance GPU Efficiency via Sub-Entry Sharing TLB Design

NVIDIA's Multi-Instance GPU (MIG) technology enables partitioning GPU computing power and memory into separate hardware instances, providing complete isolation including compute resources, caches, and memory. However, prior work identifies that MIG does not extend to partitioning the last-level TLB (i.e., L3 TLB), which remains shared among all instances. To enhance TLB reach, NVIDIA GPUs reorganized the TLB structure with 16 sub-entries in each L3 TLB entry that have a one-to-one mapping to the address translations for 16 pages of size 64KB located within the same 1MB aligned range. Our comprehensive investigation of address translation efficiency in MIG identifies two main issues caused by L3 TLB sharing interference: (i) it results in performance degradation for co-running applications, and (ii) TLB sub-entries are not fully utilized before eviction. Based on this observation, we propose STAR to improve the utilization of TLB sub-entries through dynamic sharing of TLB entries across multiple base addresses. STAR evaluates TLB entries based on their sub-entry utilization to optimize address translation storage, dynamically adjusting between a shared and non-shared status to cater to current demand. We show that STAR improves overall performance by an average of 30.2% across various multi-tenant workloads.

Auto-Optimized Maximum Torque Per Ampere Control of IPMSM Using Dual Control for Exploration and Exploitation

In this paper, a maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) control strategy for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) using dual control for exploration and exploitation (DCEE). In the proposed method, the permanent magnet flux and the difference between the $d$- and $q$-axis inductance are identified by multiple estimators using the recursive least square method. The initial values of the estimated parameters in different estimators are different. By using multiple estimators, exploration of the operational environment to reduce knowledge uncertainty can be realized. Compared to those MTPA control strategies based on the extremum-seeking method, the proposed method has better dynamic performance when speed or load varies. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by simulations.

Harnessing Optical Imaging Limit through Atmospheric Scattering Media

Recording and identifying faint objects through atmospheric scattering media by an optical system are fundamentally interesting and technologically important. In this work, we introduce a comprehensive model that incorporates contributions from target characteristics, atmospheric effects, imaging system, digital processing, and visual perception to assess the ultimate perceptible limit of geometrical imaging, specifically the angular resolution at the boundary of visible distance. The model allows to reevaluate the effectiveness of conventional imaging recording, processing, and perception and to analyze the limiting factors that constrain image recognition capabilities in atmospheric media. The simulations were compared with the experimental results measured in a fog chamber and outdoor settings. The results reveal general good agreement between analysis and experimental, pointing out the way to harnessing the physical limit for optical imaging in scattering media. An immediate application of the study is the extension of the image range by an amount of 1.2 times with noise reduction via multi-frame averaging, hence greatly enhancing the capability of optical imaging in the atmosphere.

ScaleFold: Reducing AlphaFold Initial Training Time to 10 Hours

AlphaFold2 has been hailed as a breakthrough in protein folding. It can rapidly predict protein structures with lab-grade accuracy. However, its implementation does not include the necessary training code. OpenFold is the first trainable public reimplementation of AlphaFold. AlphaFold training procedure is prohibitively time-consuming, and gets diminishing benefits from scaling to more compute resources. In this work, we conducted a comprehensive analysis on the AlphaFold training procedure based on Openfold, identified that inefficient communications and overhead-dominated computations were the key factors that prevented the AlphaFold training from effective scaling. We introduced ScaleFold, a systematic training method that incorporated optimizations specifically for these factors. ScaleFold successfully scaled the AlphaFold training to 2080 NVIDIA H100 GPUs with high resource utilization. In the MLPerf HPC v3.0 benchmark, ScaleFold finished the OpenFold benchmark in 7.51 minutes, shown over $6\times$ speedup than the baseline. For training the AlphaFold model from scratch, ScaleFold completed the pretraining in 10 hours, a significant improvement over the seven days required by the original AlphaFold pretraining baseline.

Stochastic Geometry Analysis for Distributed RISs-Assisted mmWave Communications

Millimeter wave (mmWave) has attracted considerable attention due to its wide bandwidth and high frequency. However, it is highly susceptible to blockages, resulting in significant degradation of the coverage and the sum rate. A promising approach is deploying distributed reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which can establish extra communication links. In this paper, we investigate the impact of distributed RISs on the coverage probability and the sum rate in mmWave wireless communication systems. Specifically, we first introduce the system model, which includes the blockage, the RIS and the user distribution models, leveraging the Poisson point process. Then, we define the association criterion and derive the conditional coverage probabilities for the two cases of direct association and reflective association through RISs. Finally, we combine the two cases using Campbell's theorem and the total probability theorem to obtain the closed-form expressions for the ergodic coverage probability and the sum rate. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed analytical approach, demonstrating that the deployment of distributed RISs significantly improves the ergodic coverage probability by 45.4% and the sum rate by over 1.5 times.

Hashing Beam Training for Near-Field Communications

In this paper, we investigate the millimeter-wave (mmWave) near-field beam training problem to find the correct beam direction. In order to address the high complexity and low identification accuracy of existing beam training techniques, we propose an efficient hashing multi-arm beam (HMB) training scheme for the near-field scenario. Specifically, we first design a set of sparse bases based on the polar domain sparsity of the near-field channel. Then, the random hash functions are chosen to construct the near-field multi-arm beam training codebook. Each multi-arm beam codeword is scanned in a time slot until all the predefined codewords are traversed. Finally, the soft decision and voting methods are applied to distinguish the signal from different base stations and obtain correctly aligned beams. Simulation results show that our proposed near-field HMB training method can reduce the beam training overhead to the logarithmic level, and achieve 96.4% identification accuracy of exhaustive beam training. Moreover, we also verify applicability under the far-field scenario.

Texture Classification Network Integrating Adaptive Wavelet Transform

Graves' disease is a common condition that is diagnosed clinically by determining the smoothness of the thyroid texture and its morphology in ultrasound images. Currently, the most widely used approach for the automated diagnosis of Graves' disease utilizes Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for both feature extraction and classification. However, these methods demonstrate limited efficacy in capturing texture features. Given the high capacity of wavelets in describing texture features, this research integrates learnable wavelet modules utilizing the Lifting Scheme into CNNs and incorporates a parallel wavelet branch into the ResNet18 model to enhance texture feature extraction. Our model can analyze texture features in spatial and frequency domains simultaneously, leading to optimized classification accuracy. We conducted experiments on collected ultrasound datasets and publicly available natural image texture datasets, our proposed network achieved 97.27% accuracy and 95.60% recall on ultrasound datasets, 60.765% accuracy on natural image texture datasets, surpassing the accuracy of ResNet and conrming the effectiveness of our approach.

Qr-Hint: Actionable Hints Towards Correcting Wrong SQL Queries

We describe a system called Qr-Hint that, given a (correct) target query Q* and a (wrong) working query Q, both expressed in SQL, provides actionable hints for the user to fix the working query so that it becomes semantically equivalent to the target. It is particularly useful in an educational setting, where novices can receive help from Qr-Hint without requiring extensive personal tutoring. Since there are many different ways to write a correct query, we do not want to base our hints completely on how Q* is written; instead, starting with the user's own working query, Qr-Hint purposefully guides the user through a sequence of steps that provably lead to a correct query, which will be equivalent to Q* but may still "look" quite different from it. Ideally, we would like Qr-Hint's hints to lead to the "smallest" possible corrections to Q. However, optimality is not always achievable in this case due to some foundational hurdles such as the undecidability of SQL query equivalence and the complexity of logic minimization. Nonetheless, by carefully decomposing and formulating the problems and developing principled solutions, we are able to provide provably correct and locally optimal hints through Qr-Hint. We show the effectiveness of Qr-Hint through quality and performance experiments as well as a user study in an educational setting.

On Reporting Durable Patterns in Temporal Proximity Graphs

Finding patterns in graphs is a fundamental problem in databases and data mining. In many applications, graphs are temporal and evolve over time, so we are interested in finding durable patterns, such as triangles and paths, which persist over a long time. While there has been work on finding durable simple patterns, existing algorithms do not have provable guarantees and run in strictly super-linear time. The paper leverages the observation that many graphs arising in practice are naturally proximity graphs or can be approximated as such, where nodes are embedded as points in some high-dimensional space, and two nodes are connected by an edge if they are close to each other. We work with an implicit representation of the proximity graph, where nodes are additionally annotated by time intervals, and design near-linear-time algorithms for finding (approximately) durable patterns above a given durability threshold. We also consider an interactive setting where a client experiments with different durability thresholds in a sequence of queries; we show how to compute incremental changes to result patterns efficiently in time near-linear to the size of the changes.

Dual Control of Exploration and Exploitation for Auto-Optimisation Control with Active Learning

The quest for optimal operation in environments with unknowns and uncertainties is highly desirable but critically challenging across numerous fields. This paper develops a dual control framework for exploration and exploitation (DCEE) to solve an auto-optimisation problem in such complex settings. In general, there is a fundamental conflict between tracking an unknown optimal operational condition and parameter identification. The DCEE framework stands out by eliminating the need for additional perturbation signals, a common requirement in existing adaptive control methods. Instead, it inherently incorporates an exploration mechanism, actively probing the uncertain environment to diminish belief uncertainty. An ensemble based multi-estimator approach is developed to learn the environmental parameters and in the meanwhile quantify the estimation uncertainty in real time. The control action is devised with dual effects, which not only minimises the tracking error between the current state and the believed unknown optimal operational condition but also reduces belief uncertainty by proactively exploring the environment. Formal properties of the proposed DCEE framework like convergence are established. A numerical example is used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed DCEE. Simulation results for maximum power point tracking are provided to further demonstrate the potential of this new framework in real world applications.
