Gravitational floating orbits around hairy black holes

We show that gravitational floating orbits may exist for black holes with rotating hairs. These black hole hairs could originate from the superradiant growth of a light axion field around the rotating black holes. If a test particle rotates around the black hole, its tidal field may resonantly trigger the dynamical transition between a co-rotating state and a dissipative state of the axion cloud. A tidal bulge is generated by the beating of modes, which feeds angular momentum back to the test particle. Following this mechanism, an extreme-mass-ratio-inspiral (EMRI) system, as a source for LISA, may face delayed merger as the EMRI orbit stalls by the tidal response of the cloud, until the cloud being almost fully dissipated. If the cloud depletes slower than the average time separation between EMRI mergers, it may lead to interesting interaction between multiple EMRI objects at comparable radii. Inclined EMRIs are also expected to migrate towards the black hole equatorial plane due to the tidal coupling and gravitational-wave dissipation. Floating stellar-mass back holes or stars around the nearby intermediate-mass black holes may generate strong gravitational-wave emission detectable by LISA.

Design of remote control software of near infrared Sky Brightness Monitor in Antarctica

The Near-infrared Sky Brightness Monitor (NIRBM) aims to measure the middle infrared sky background in Antarctica. The NIRBM mainly consists of an InGaAs detector, a chopper, a reflector, a cooler and a black body. The reflector can rotate to scan the sky with a field of view ranging from 0° to 180°. Electromechanical control and weak signal readout functions are accomplished by the same circuit, whose core chip is a STM32F407VG microcontroller. Considering the environment is harsh for humans in Antarctica, a multi-level remote control software system is designed and implemented. A set of EPICS IOCs are developed to control each hardware module independently via serial port communication with the STM32 microcontroller. The tornado web framework and PyEpics are introduced as a combination where PyEpics is used to monitor or change the EPICS Process Variables, functioning as a client for the EPICS framework. Tornado is responsible for the specific operation process of inter-device collaboration, and expose a set of interfaces to users to make calls. Considering the high delay and low bandwidth of the network environment, the tornado back-end is designed as a master-and-agent architecture to improve domestic user experience. The master node is deployed in Antarctic while multiple agent nodes can be deployed domestic. The master and agent nodes communicate with each other through the WebSocket protocol to exchange latest information so that bandwidth is saved. The GUI is implemented in the form of single-page application based on the Vue framework which communicates with tornado through WebSocket and AJAX requests. The web page integrates device control, data curve drawing, alarm display, auto observation and other functions together.

Prospects for axion searches with Advanced LIGO through binary mergers

The observation of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by LIGO/VIRGO and the associated electromagnetic counterpart provides a high precision test of orbital dynamics, and therefore a new and sensitive probe of extra forces and new radiative degrees of freedom. Axions are one particularly well-motivated class of extensions to the Standard Model leading to new forces and sources of radiation, which we focus on in this paper. Using an effective field theory (EFT) approach, we calculate the first post-Newtonian corrections to the orbital dynamics, radiated power, and gravitational waveform for binary neutron star mergers in the presence of an axion. This result is applicable to many theories which add an extra massive scalar degree of freedom to General Relativity. We then perform a detailed forecast of the potential for Advanced LIGO to constrain the free parameters of the EFT, and map these to the mass $m_a$ and decay constant $f_a$ of the axion. At design sensitivity, we find that Advanced LIGO can potentially exclude axions with $m_a \lesssim 10^{-11} \ {\rm eV}$ and $f_a \sim (10^{14} - 10^{17}) \ {\rm GeV}$. There are a variety of complementary observational probes over this region of parameter space, including the orbital decay of binary pulsars, black hole superradiance, and laboratory searches. We comment on the synergies between these various observables.

Hybrid Beamforming for Millimeter Wave Systems Using the MMSE Criterion

Hybrid analog and digital beamforming (HBF) has recently emerged as an attractive technique for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. It well balances the demand for sufficient beamforming gains to overcome the propagation loss and the desire to reduce the hardware cost and power consumption. In this paper, the mean square error (MSE) is chosen as the performance metric to characterize the transmission reliability. Using the minimum sum-MSE criterion, we investigate the HBF design for broadband mmWave transmissions. To overcome the difficulty of solving the multi-variable design problem, the alternating minimization method is adopted to optimize the hybrid transmit and receive beamformers alternatively. Specifically, a manifold optimization based HBF algorithm is firstly proposed, which directly handles the constant modulus constraint of the analog component. Its convergence is then proved. To reduce the computational complexity, we then propose a low-complexity general eigenvalue decomposition based HBF algorithm in the narrowband scenario and three algorithms via the eigenvalue decomposition and orthogonal matching pursuit methods in the broadband scenario. A particular innovation in our proposed alternating minimization algorithms is a carefully designed initialization method, which leads to faster convergence. {Furthermore, we extend the sum-MSE based design to that with weighted sum-MSE, which is then connected to the spectral efficiency based design.} Simulation results show that the proposed HBF algorithms achieve significant performance improvement over existing ones, and perform close to full-digital beamforming.

A Tractable Framework for Coverage Analysis of Cellular-Connected UAV Networks

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently found abundant applications in the public and civil domains. To ensure reliable control and navigation, connecting UAVs to controllers via existing cellular network infrastructure, i.e., ground base stations (GBSs), has been proposed as a promising solution. Nevertheless, it is highly challenging to characterize the communication performance of cellular-connected UAVs, due to their unique propagation conditions. This paper proposes a tractable framework for the coverage analysis of cellular-connected UAV networks, which consists of a new blockage model and an effective approach to handle general fading channels. In particular, a line-of-sight (LoS) ball model is proposed to capture the probabilistic propagation in UAV communication systems, and a tractable expression is derived for the Laplace transform of the aggregate interference with general Nakagami fading. This framework leads to a tractable expression for the coverage probability, which in turn helps to investigate the impact of the GBS density. Specifically, a tight lower bound on the optimal density that maximizes the coverage probability is derived. Numerical results show that the proposed LoS ball model is accurate, and the optimal GBS density decreases when the UAV altitude increases.

Quantitative Verification of Masked Arithmetic Programs against Side-Channel Attacks

Power side-channel attacks, which can deduce secret data via statistical analysis, have become a serious threat. Masking is an effective countermeasure for reducing the statistical dependence between secret data and side-channel information. However, designing masking algorithms is an error-prone process. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach combing type inference and model-counting to verify masked arithmetic programs against side-channel attacks. The type inference allows an efficient, lightweight procedure to determine most observable variables whereas model-counting accounts for completeness. In case that the program is not perfectly masked, we also provide a method to quantify the security level of the program. We implement our methods in a tool QMVerif and evaluate it on cryptographic benchmarks. The experimental results show the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Quasi-periodic Fast Propagating Magnetoacoustic Waves during the Magnetic Reconnection Between Solar Coronal Loops

Employing Solar Dynamics Observatory/Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) multi-wavelength images, we have presented coronal condensations caused by magnetic reconnection between a system of open and closed solar coronal loops. In this Letter, we report the quasi-periodic fast magnetoacoustic waves propagating away from the reconnection region upward across the higher-lying open loops during the reconnection process. On 2012 January 19, reconnection between the higher-lying open loops and lower-lying closed loops took place, and two sets of newly reconnected loops formed. Thereafter, cooling and condensations of coronal plasma occurred in the magnetic dip region of higher-lying open loops. During the reconnection process, disturbances originating from the reconnection region propagate upward across the magnetic dip region of higher-lying loops with the mean speed and mean speed amplitude of 200 and 30 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. The mean speed of the propagating disturbances decreases from $\sim$230 km s$^{-1}$ to $\sim$150 km s$^{-1}$ during the coronal condensation process, and then increases to $\sim$220 km s$^{-1}$. This temporal evolution of the mean speed anti-correlates with the light curves of the AIA 131 and 304 Å~channels that show the cooling and condensation process of coronal plasma. Furthermore, the propagating disturbances appear quasi-periodically with a peak period of 4 minutes. Our results suggest that the disturbances represent the quasi-periodic fast propagating magnetoacoustic (QFPM) waves originating from the magnetic reconnection between coronal loops.

ABS: an Analytical method of Blind Separation of CMB from foregrounds

Extracting CMB B-mode polarization from complicated foregrounds is a challenging task in searching for inflationary gravitational waves. We propose the ABS method as a blind and analytical solution to this problem. It applies to the measured cross bandpower between different frequency bands and obtains the CMB B-mode bandpower analytically. It does not rely on assumptions of foregrounds and does not require multiple parameter fitting. Testing against a variety of foregrounds, survey frequency configurations and instrument noise, we verify its applicability and numerical stability. The ABS method also applies to CMB temperature, E-mode polarization, the thermal Sunyaev Zel'dovich effect, spectral distortion, and even significantly different problems such as cosmic magnification.

Signature of the interaction between dark sectors in the reionization process

We consider the reionization process in a cosmological model in which dark matter interacts with dark energy. Using a semi-analytical reionization model, we compute the evolution of the ionized fraction in terms of its spatial average and linear perturbations. We show that certain types of interactions between dark matter and dark energy can significantly affect the reionization history. We calculate the 21 cm signals in the interaction models, and compare the results with the predictions of the ${\rm ΛCDM}$ model.

A comparative study on the bottleneck flow between preschool children and adults under different movement motivations

Understanding on children's movement characteristics is significant to improve their safety levels especially under emergencies. In this work, we performed laboratory experiment to investigate the dynamics of preschool children passing through bottlenecks under high movement motivation. It is found that the relations between flow and bottleneck width for adults and children can be unified when the body size and movement motivation are considered in certain way. High movement motivation leads to competition among pedestrians, which results in different spatial-temporal distribution of the density and speed compared to normal movement of adult. Based on Voronoi method, an arch-like distribution is observed for the children movement with competition, whereas it is teardrop-shaped for the adults without competition. The peak density of children, which reaches nearly 14 ped/m2, appears at the place 30 cm away from the bottleneck entrance. However, it is about 100 cm to the bottleneck for adults. Besides, several typical behaviors of children like guiding, pushing as well as playing are observed in the experiment. The findings in this study will benefit the evacuation drill design as well as the facility design for children.

The fundamental diagrams of elderly pedestrian flow in straight corridors under different densities

The worldwide population is aging and countries are facing ongoing challenges in meeting the transportation demand of the elderly. In this study, we investigate the movement characteristics of elders in the straight corridor and compare them with that of young adults. The free speeds of the elderly (about 1.28m/s) are obviously slower than that of the young people (about 1.4m/s) in the laboratory experiments. It was found that the fundamental diagram of the elderly shows the similar trend compared with that of young pedestrians. However, at the same densities the speeds of the elderly are always lower than that of the young pedestrians in the observed density range (< 3.0 m2). When the mean velocity calculated from pedestrian movement at low densities is considered, the two normalized fundamental diagrams agree quite well. The reasons for the differences are explored by analyzing the border distance, the nearest neighbors as well as the spatial distribution areas of the pedestrians. Our findings can be useful for the improvement of the pedestrian modelling and the design of pedestrian facilities that are much friendlier to the elderly.

Experimental demonstration of nonbilocality with truly independent sources and strict locality constraints

Entanglement swapping entangles two particles that have never interacted[1], which implicitly assumes that each particle carries an independent local hidden variable, i.e., the presence of bilocality[2]. Previous experimental studies of bilocal hidden variable models did not fulfill the central requirement that the assumed two local hidden variable models must be mutually independent and hence their conclusions are flawed on the rejection of local realism[3-5]. By harnessing the laser phase randomization[6] rising from the spontaneous emission to the stimulated emission to ensure the independence between entangled photon-pairs created at separate sources and separating relevant events spacelike to satisfy the no-signaling condition, for the first time, we simultaneously close the loopholes of independent source, locality and measurement independence in an entanglement swapping experiment in a network. We measure a bilocal parameter of 1.181$\pm$0.004 and the CHSH game value of 2.652$\pm$0.059, indicating the rejection of bilocal hidden variable models by 45 standard deviations and local hidden variable models by 11 standard deviations. We hence rule out local realism and justify the presence of quantum nonlocality in our network experiment. Our experimental realization constitutes a fundamental block for a large quantum network. Furthermore, we anticipate that it may stimulate novel information processing applications[7,8].

Solar jet-like features rooted in flare ribbons

Employing the high spatio-temporal Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph 1330 Å observations, we investigated the jet-like features that occurred during the X8.2 class flare in NOAA active region (AR) 12673 on 2017 September 10. These jet-like features were rooted in the flare ribbons. We examined 15 features, and the mean values of the lifetimes, projected widths, lengths and velocities of these features were 87 s, 890 km, 2.7 Mm and 70 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. We also observed many jet-like features which happened during the X1.0 class flare on 2014 October 25. We studied the spectra at the base of a jet-like feature during its development. The Fe XXI 1354.08 Å line in the corona displays blueshift, while the Si IV 1402.77 Å line in the transition region exhibits redshift, which indicates the chromospheric evaporation. This is the first time that the jet-like features are reported to be rooted in the flare ribbons, and we suggest that these jet-like features were driven by the mechanism of chromospheric evaporation.

A secondary fan-spine magnetic structure in active region 11897

Fan-spine is a special topology in solar atmosphere and is closely related to magnetic null point as well as circular-ribbon flares, which can provide important information for understanding the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) nature of solar flares. However, the fine structure within the fan has rarely been investigated. In present paper, we investigate a secondary fan-spine (SFS) structure within the fan of a larger fan-spine topology. On 2013 November 18, this large fan-spine structure was traced out due to the partial eruption of a filament, which caused a circular-ribbon flare in active region 11897. The extrapolated 3D magnetic fields and squashing factor Q maps depict distinctly this fan-spine topology, its surrounding quasi-separatrix layer (QSL) halo, and a smaller quasi-circular ribbon with high Q located in the center, which implies the existence of fine structure within the fan. The imaging observations, extrapolated 3D fields, and Q maps on November 17 show that there indeed exists an SFS surrounded by a QSL, which is enveloped by another QSL-halo corresponding to the overlying larger domeshaped fan. Moreover, the material flows caused by the null-point reconnection are also detected along this SFS. After checking the evolution of the underneath magnetic fields, we suggest that the continuous emergence of magnetic flux within the central parasitic region encompassed by the opposite-polarity fields results in the formation of the SFS under the large fan.

Uniaxial dynamical decoupling for an open quantum system

Dynamical decoupling (DD) is an active and effective method for suppressing decoherence of a quantum system from its environment. In contrast to the nominal biaxial DD,this work presents a uniaxial decoupling protocol that requires a significantly reduced number of pulses and a much lower bias field satisfying the "magic" condition. We show this uniaxial DD protocol works effectively in a number of model systems of practical interests, e.g., a spinor atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in stray magnetic fields (classical noise), or an electron spin coupled to nuclear spins (quantum noise) in a semiconductor quantum dot. It requires only half the number of control pulses and a 10-100 times lower bias field for decoupling as normally employed in the above mentioned illustrative examples, and the overall efficacy is robust against rotation errors of the control pulses. The uniaxial DD protocol we propose shines new light on coherent controls in quantum computing and quantum information processing, quantum metrology, and low field nuclear magnetic resonance.

A giant dark channel across the solar equator consisting of two filament channels with different chiralities

Solar filaments are the largest magnetic structure that can be physically traced to the chromosphere. The structure and evolution of solar filaments are important for our understanding of solar atmosphere physics. In this work, we investigate a giant dark channel crossing the solar equator, which consists of two filament channels with different chiralities. From 2016 April 22 to April 27, this giant dark channel occupied the solar disk. Within this giant channel, a filament channel with dextral chirality was detected in the northern hemisphere, and another filament channel with sinistral chirality was observed in the southern hemisphere. At the junction of the two filament channels, a cusp structure was observed associated with active region (AR) 12532 near the solar equator. The extrapolated three-dimensional magnetic fields reveal that this cusp structure was composed of two sets of field lines belonging to two different filament channels and was rooted on the AR positive-polarity fields. In addition, dark material flows from filaments in the two channels to the cusp structure were detected as well as the flux emergence and cancellation around the cusp footpoints. On 2016 May 21, after a solar rotation, the cusp structure had disappeared, and the giant dark channel broke in the middle where another AR, 12546, had emerged completely. We propose that the magnetic flux emergence and cancellation around the cusp region resulted in the disappearance of the cusp structure and the break of the giant dark channel.

Current sheets in the wake of an eruption of two crossing filaments

Employing Solar Dynamic Observatory/Atmosphertic Imaging Assembly (AIA) multi-wavelength images, we study an eruption of two crossing filaments, and firstly report the current sheets (CSs) connecting the lower flare ribbons and the upper erupting filaments. On July 8, 2014, two crossing filaments are observed in the NOAA active region (AR) 12113. The lower-lying filament rises first, and then meets the higher-lying one. Thereafter, both of them erupt together. The filament eruption draws the overlying magnetic field lines upward, leading to the approach of two legs, with opposite magnetic polarities, of the overlying field lines. Two sets of bright CSs form at the interface of these two legs, and magnetic reconnection takes place in the CSs producing the underneath flare ribbons and post-flare loops. Several bright plasmoids appear in the CSs, and propagate along the CSs bi-directionally. The CSs and plasmoids are observed in AIA multi-wavelength channels, indicating that both of them have been heated during the reconnection process, with hot and warm components. Employing the differential emission measure (EM) analysis, we find that both the temperature and EM of the CSs decrease from the flare arcades outward to the erupting filaments, and those of the plasmoids are significantly larger than the regions where no plasmoid is detected.

Transfer Learning for Mixed-Integer Resource Allocation Problems in Wireless Networks

Effective resource allocation plays a pivotal role for performance optimization in wireless networks. Unfortunately, typical resource allocation problems are mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems, which are NP-hard. Machine learning based methods recently emerge as a disruptive way to obtain near-optimal performance for MINLP problems with affordable computational complexity. However, they suffer from severe performance deterioration when the network parameters change, which commonly happens in practice and can be characterized as the task mismatch issue. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning method via self-imitation, to address this issue for effective resource allocation in wireless networks. It is based on a general "learning to optimize" framework for solving MINLP problems. A unique advantage of the proposed method is that it can tackle the task mismatch issue with a few additional unlabeled training samples, which is especially important when transferring to large-size problems. Numerical experiments demonstrate that with much less training time, the proposed method achieves comparable performance with the model trained from scratch with sufficient amount of labeled samples. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work that applies transfer learning for resource allocation in wireless networks.
