Power Minimization Based Joint Task Scheduling and Resource Allocation in Downlink C-RAN

In this paper, we consider the network power minimization problem in a downlink cloud radio access network (C-RAN), taking into account the power consumed at the baseband unit (BBU) for computation and the power consumed at the remote radio heads and fronthaul links for transmission. The power minimization problem for transmission is a fast time-scale issue whereas the power minimization problem for computation is a slow time-scale issue. Therefore, the joint network power minimization problem is a mixed time-scale problem. To tackle the time-scale challenge, we introduce large system analysis to turn the original fast time-scale problem into a slow time-scale one that only depends on the statistical channel information. In addition, we propose a bound improving branch-and-bound algorithm and a combinational algorithm to find the optimal and suboptimal solutions to the power minimization problem for computation, respectively, and propose an iterative coordinate descent algorithm to find the solutions to the power minimization problem for transmission. Finally, a distributed algorithm based on hierarchical decomposition is proposed to solve the joint network power minimization problem. In summary, this work provides a framework to investigate how execution efficiency and computing capability at BBU as well as delay constraint of tasks can affect the network power minimization problem in C-RANs.

Device independent quantum random number generation

Randomness is critical for many information processing applications, including numerical modeling and cryptography. Device-independent quantum random number generation (DIQRNG) based on the loophole free violation of Bell inequality produces unpredictable genuine randomness without any device assumption and is therefore an ultimate goal in the field of quantum information science. However, due to formidable technical challenges, there were very few reported experimental studies of DIQRNG, which were vulnerable to the adversaries. Here we present a fully functional DIQRNG against the most general quantum adversaries. We construct a robust experimental platform that realizes Bell inequality violation with entangled photons with detection and locality loopholes closed simultaneously. This platform enables a continuous recording of a large volume of data sufficient for security analysis against the general quantum side information and without assuming independent and identical distribution. Lastly, by developing a large Toeplitz matrix (137.90 Gb $\times$ 62.469 Mb) hashing technique, we demonstrate that this DIQRNG generates $6.2469\times 10^7$ quantum-certified random bits in 96 hours (or 181 bits/s) with uniformity within $10^{-5}$. We anticipate this DIQRNG may have profound impact on the research of quantum randomness and information-secured applications.

Joint Optimization of Fronthaul Compression and Bandwidth Allocation in Uplink H-CRAN with Large System Analysis

In this paper, we consider an uplink heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN), where a macro base station (BS) coexists with many remote radio heads (RRHs). For cost-savings, only the BS is connected to the baseband unit (BBU) pool via fiber links. The RRHs, however, are associated with the BBU pool through wireless fronthaul links, which share the spectrum resource with radio access networks. Due to the limited capacity of fronthaul, the compress-and-forward scheme is employed, such as point-to-point compression or Wyner-Ziv coding. Different decoding strategies are also considered. This work aims to maximize the uplink ergodic sum-rate (SR) by jointly optimizing quantization noise matrix and bandwidth allocation between radio access networks and fronthaul links, which is a mixed time-scale issue. To reduce computational complexity and communication overhead, we introduce an approximation problem of the joint optimization problem based on large-dimensional random matrix theory, which is a slow time-scale issue because it only depends on statistical channel information. Finally, an algorithm based on Dinkelbach's algorithm is proposed to find the optimal solution to the approximate problem. In summary, this work provides an economic solution to the challenge of constrained fronthaul capacity, and also provides a framework with less computational complexity to study how bandwidth allocation and fronthaul compression can affect the SR maximization problem.

Quantitative Tamarkin category

This is a lecture note from a seminar course given at Tel Aviv University in Spring 2018. Part of the preliminary section is built from Kazhdan's seminar organized in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Fall 2017. The main topic of this note is a detailed introduction of Tamarkin category theory from a quantitative perspective, followed by a demonstration of various applications in symplectic topology. Many examples are provided in order to obtain certain geometric intuitions of those abstract algebraic constructions in Tamarkin category. In this note, we try to explain how standard symplectic techniques, for instance, generating function, capacities, symplectic homology, etc., are elegantly packaged in the language of sheaves as well as related intriguing sheaf operators. In addition, many concepts developed in Tamarkin category theory are natural generalizations of persistent homology theory, so their relations are emphasized along with the development of the note.

Automatic deep learning-based normalization of breast dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance images

Objective: To develop an automatic image normalization algorithm for intensity correction of images from breast dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) acquired by different MRI scanners with various imaging parameters, using only image information. Methods: DCE-MR images of 460 subjects with breast cancer acquired by different scanners were used in this study. Each subject had one T1-weighted pre-contrast image and three T1-weighted post-contrast images available. Our normalization algorithm operated under the assumption that the same type of tissue in different patients should be represented by the same voxel value. We used four tissue/material types as the anchors for the normalization: 1) air, 2) fat tissue, 3) dense tissue, and 4) heart. The algorithm proceeded in the following two steps: First, a state-of-the-art deep learning-based algorithm was applied to perform tissue segmentation accurately and efficiently. Then, based on the segmentation results, a subject-specific piecewise linear mapping function was applied between the anchor points to normalize the same type of tissue in different patients into the same intensity ranges. We evaluated the algorithm with 300 subjects used for training and the rest used for testing. Results: The application of our algorithm to images with different scanning parameters resulted in highly improved consistency in pixel values and extracted radiomics features. Conclusion: The proposed image normalization strategy based on tissue segmentation can perform intensity correction fully automatically, without the knowledge of the scanner parameters. Significance: We have thoroughly tested our algorithm and showed that it successfully normalizes the intensity of DCE-MR images. We made our software publicly available for others to apply in their analyses.

Weak lensing power spectrum reconstruction by counting galaxies.-- II: Improving the ABS method with the shift parameter

In paper I of this series (Yang et al. 2017, ApJ), we proposed an analytical method of blind separation ({\bf ABS}) to extract the cosmic magnification signal in galaxy number distribution and reconstruct the weak lensing power spectrum. Here we report a new version of the ABS method, with significantly improved performance. This version is characterized by a shift parameter $\mathcal{S}$, with the special case of $\mathcal{S}=0$ corresponding to the original ABS method. We have tested this new version, compared to the previous one, and confirmed its supreme performance in all investigated situations. Therefore it supersedes the previous version. The proof of concept studies presented in this paper demonstrate that it may enable surveys such as LSST and SKA to reconstruct the lensing power spectrum at $z\simeq 1$ with $1\%$ accuracy. We will test with more realistic simulations to verify its applicability in real data.

Observing Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in solar blowout jet

Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI) is a basic physical process in fluids and magnetized plasmas, with applications successfully modelling e.g. exponentially growing instabilities observed at magnetospheric and heliospheric boundaries, in the solar or Earth's atmosphere and within astrophysical jets. Here, we report the discovery of the KHI in solar blowout jets and analyse the detailed evolution by employing high-resolution data from the Interface Region Imaging Spectrograph (IRIS) satellite launched in 2013. The particular jet we focus on is rooted in the surrounding penumbra of the main negative polarity sunspot of Active Region 12365, where the main body of the jet is a super-penumbral structure. At its maximum, the jet has a length of 90 Mm, a width of 19.7 Mm, and its density is about 40 times higher than its surroundings. During the evolution of the jet, a cavity appears near the base of the jet, and bi-directional flows originated from the top and bottom of the cavity start to develop, indicating that magnetic reconnection takes place around the cavity. Two upward flows pass along the left boundary of the jet successively. Next, KHI develops due to a strong velocity shear (~ 204 km s$^{-1}$) between these two flows, and subsequently the smooth left boundary exhibits a sawtooth pattern, evidencing the onset of the instability.

Are gravitational wave ringdown echoes always equal-interval ?

Gravitational wave (GW) ringdown waveforms may contain "echoes" that encode new physics in the strong gravity regime. It is commonly assumed that the new physics gives rise to the GW echoes whose intervals are constant. We point out that this assumption is not always applicable. In particular, if the post-merger object is initially a wormhole, which slowly pinches off and eventually collapses into a black hole, the late-time ringdown waveform exhibit a series of echoes whose intervals are increasing with time. We also assess how this affects the ability of Advanced LIGO/Virgo to detect these new signals.

Exploiting Mobility in Cache-Assisted D2D Networks: Performance Analysis and Optimization

Caching popular content at mobile devices, accompanied by device-to-device (D2D) communications, is one promising technology for effective mobile content delivery. User mobility is an important factor when investigating such networks, which unfortunately was largely ignored in most previous works. Preliminary studies have been carried out, but the effect of mobility on the caching performance has not been fully understood. In this paper, by explicitly considering users' contact and inter-contact durations via an alternating renewal process, we first investigate the effect of mobility with a given cache placement. A tractable expression of the data offloading ratio, i.e., the proportion of requested data that can be delivered via D2D links, is derived, which is proved to be increasing with the user moving speed. The analytical results are then used to develop an effective mobility-aware caching strategy to maximize the data offloading ratio. Simulation results are provided to confirm the accuracy of the analytical results and also validate the effect of user mobility. Performance gains of the proposed mobility-aware caching strategy are demonstrated with both stochastic models and real-life data sets. It is observed that the information of the contact durations is critical to design cache placement, especially when they are relatively short or comparable to the inter-contact durations.

Mini-filament Eruptions Triggering Confined Solar Flares Observed by ONSET and SDO

Using the observations from the Optical and Near-infrared Solar Eruption Tracer and the Solar Dynamics Observatory, we study an M5.7 flare in AR 11476 on 2012 May 10 and a micro-flare in the quiet Sun on 2017 March 23. Before the onset of each flare, there is a reverse S-shaped filament above the polarity inversion line. Then the filaments become unstable and begin to rise. The rising filaments gain the upper hand over the tension force of the dome-like overlying loops and thus successfully erupt outward. The footpoints of the reconnecting overlying loops successively brighten and are observed as two flare ribbons, while the newly formed low-lying loops appear as the post-flare loops. These eruptions are similar to the classical model of successful filament eruptions associated with coronal mass ejections. However, the erupting filaments in this study move along large-scale lines and eventually reach the remote solar surface, i.e., no filament material is ejected into the interplanetary space. Thus both the flares are confined ones. These results reveal that some successful filament eruptions can trigger confined flares. Our observations also imply that this kind of filament eruptions may be ubiquitous on the Sun, from active regions with large flares to the quiet Sun with micro-flares.

KRust: A Formal Executable Semantics of Rust

Rust is a new and promising high-level system programming language. It provides both memory safety and thread safety through its novel mechanisms such as ownership, moves and borrows. Ownership system ensures that at any point there is only one owner of any given resource. The ownership of a resource can be moved or borrowed according to the lifetimes. The ownership system establishes a clear lifetime for each value and hence does not necessarily need garbage collection. These novel features bring Rust high performance, fine low-level control of C and C++, and unnecessity in garbage collection, which differ Rust from other existing prevalent languages. For formal analysis of Rust programs and helping programmers learn its new mechanisms and features, a formal semantics of Rust is desired and useful as a fundament for developing related tools. In this paper, we present a formal executable operational semantics of a realistic subset of Rust, called KRust. The semantics is defined in K, a rewriting-based executable semantic framework for programming languages. The executable semantics yields automatically a formal interpreter and verification tools for Rust programs. KRust has been thoroughly validated by testing with hundreds of tests, including the official Rust test suite.

Automated Big Traffic Analytics for Cyber Security

Network traffic analytics technology is a cornerstone for cyber security systems. We demonstrate its use through three popular and contemporary cyber security applications in intrusion detection, malware analysis and botnet detection. However, automated traffic analytics faces the challenges raised by big traffic data. In terms of big data's three characteristics --- volume, variety and velocity, we review three state of the art techniques to mitigate the key challenges including real-time traffic classification, unknown traffic classification, and efficiency of classifiers. The new techniques using statistical features, unknown discovery and correlation analytics show promising potentials to deal with big traffic data. Readers are encouraged to devote to improving the performance and practicability of automatic traffic analytic in cyber security.

DFT-Based Hybrid Beamforming Multiuser Systems: Rate Analysis and Beam Selection

This paper considers the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based hybrid beamforming multiuser system and studies the use of analog beam selection schemes. We first analyze the uplink ergodic achievable rates of the zero-forcing (ZF) receiver and the maximum-ratio combining (MRC) receiver under Ricean fading conditions. We then examine the downlink ergodic achievable rates for the ZF and maximum-ratio transmitting (MRT) precoders. The long-term and short-term normalization methods are introduced, which utilize long-term and instantaneous channel state information (CSI) to implement the downlink power normalization, respectively. Also, approximations and asymptotic expressions of both the uplink and downlink rates are obtained, which facilitate the analog beam selection solutions to maximize the achievable rates. An exhaustive search provides the optimal results but to reduce the time-consumption, we resort to the derived rate limits and propose the second selection scheme based on the projected power of the line-of-sight (LoS) paths. We then combine the advantages of the two schemes and propose a two-step scheme that achieves near optimal performances with much less time-consumption than exhaustive search. Numerical results confirm the analytical results of the ergodic achievable rate and reveal the effectiveness of the proposed two-step method.

Two Episodes of Magnetic Reconnections During a Confined Circular-ribbon Flare

We analyze a unique event with an M1.8 confined circular-ribbon flare on 2016 February 13, with successive formations of two circular ribbons at the same location. The flare had two distinct phases of UV and EUV emissions with an interval of about 270 s, of which the second peak was energetically more important. The first episode was accompanied by the eruption of a mini-filament and the fast elongation motion of a thin circular ribbon (CR1) along the counterclockwise direction at a speed of about 220 km/s. Two elongated spine-related ribbons were also observed, with the inner ribbon co-temporal with CR1 and the remote brightenings forming ~20 s later. In the second episode, another mini-filament erupted and formed a blowout jet. The second circular ribbon and two spine-related ribbons showed similar elongation motions with that during the first episode. The extrapolated 3D coronal magnetic fields reveal the existence of a fan-spine topology, together with a quasi-separatrix layer (QSL) halo surrounding the fan plane and another QSL structure outlining the inner spine. We suggest that continuous null-point reconnection between the filament and ambient open field occurs in each episode, leading to the sequential opening of the filament and significant shifts of the fan plane footprint. For the first time, we propose a compound eruption model of circular-ribbon flares consisting of two sets of successively formed ribbons and eruptions of multiple filaments in a fan-spine-type magnetic configuration.

Electroweak properties of octet baryons in light-cone quark-diquark model

We study the electroweak properties of ground state octet baryons in a relativistic quark-spectator-diquark model, with light-front formalism applied to take relativistic effects into account. Our model provides a consistent picture of the electroweak properties of the ground state octet baryons in the low momentum transfer region. The Melosh-Wigner rotation is applied as the transformation relation between spinors in the instant form and front form. Numerical results are presented for the magnetic moments, weak transition charges and Sachs form factors. Our results are in good agreement with experimental measurements and other theoretical results.

Phase amplification in optical interferometry with weak measurement

Improving the phase resolution of interferometry is crucial for high-precision measurements of various physical quantities. Systematic phase errors dominate the phase uncertainties in most realistic optical interferometers. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a weak measurement scheme to considerably suppress the phase uncertainties by the direct amplification of phase shift in optical interferometry. Given an initial ultra-small phase shift between orthogonal polarization states, we observe the phase amplification effect with a factor of 388. Our weak measurement scheme provides a practical approach to significantly improve the interferometric phase resolution, which is favorable for precision measurement applications.
