On Non-simple blowup solutions of Liouville equation

For Liouville equation with quantized singular sources, the non-simple blowup phenomenon has been a major difficulty for years. It was conjectured by the first two authors that the non-simple blowup phenomenon does not occur if the equation is defined on the unit ball with Dirichlet boundary condition. In this article we not only completely settle this conjecture in its entirety, but also extend our result to cover any bounded domain. Since the main theorem in this article rules out the non-simple phenomenon in commonly observed applications, it may pave the way for advances in degree counting programs, uniqueness of blowup solutions and construction of solutions, etc.

High Order Vanishing Theorems for Nonsimple Blowup Solutions of Singular Liouville Equation

For a singular Liouville equation, it is plausible that a non-simple blowup phenomenon occurs around a quantized singular pole. The presence of complex blowup profiles of bubbling solutions presents substantial challenges in applications. In this article, we demonstrate that under natural assumptions, non-simple blowup takes place only when the derivatives of certain coefficient functions approach zero. Our main result encompasses all previous findings and determines the vanishing order for any specific quantized singular source. Our theorems can be utilized not only to eliminate multiple non-simple blowup scenarios in applications but also to investigate blowup solutions with moving poles.

Critical Mass Phenomena and Blow-up behavior of Ground States in stationary second order Mean-Field Games systems with decreasing cost

This paper is devoted to the study of Mean-field Games (MFG) systems in the mass critical exponent case. We firstly establish the optimal Gagliardo-Nirenberg type inequality associated with the potential-free MFG system. Then, under some mild assumptions on the potential function, we show that there exists a critical mass $M^*$ such that the MFG system admits a least energy solution if and only if the total mass of population density $M$ satisfies $M<M^*$. Moreover, the blow-up behavior of energy minimizers are captured as $M\nearrow M^*$. In particular, given the precise asymptotic expansions of the potential, we establish the refined blow-up behavior of ground states as $M\nearrow M^*.$ While studying the existence of least energy solutions, we establish new local $W^{2,p}$ estimates of solutions to Hamilton-Jacobi equations with superlinear gradient terms.

Existence and Stability of Localized Patterns in the Population Models with Large Advection and Strong Allee Effect

The strong Allee effect plays an important role on the evolution of population in ecological systems. One important concept is the Allee threshold that determines the persistence or extinction of the population in a long time. In general, a small initial population size is harmful to the survival of a species since when the initial data is below the Allee threshold the population tends to extinction, rather than persistence. Another interesting feature of population evolution is that a species whose movement strategy follows a conditional dispersal strategy is more likely to persist. In other words, the biased movement can be a benefit for the persistence of the population. The coexistence of the above two conflicting mechanisms makes the dynamics rather intricate. However, some numerical results obtained by Cosner et. al. (SIAM J. Appl. Math., Vol. 81, No. 2, 2021) show that the directed movement can invalidate the strong Allee effect and help the population survive. To study this intriguing phenomenon, we consider the pattern formation and local dynamics for a class of single species population models of that is subject to the strong Allee effect. We first rigorously show the existence of multiple localized solutions when the directed movement is strong enough. Next, the spectrum analysis of the associated linear eigenvalue problem is established and used to investigate the stability properties of these interior spikes. This analysis proves that there exists not only unstable but also linear stable steady states. Then, we extend results of the single equation to coupled systems, and also construct several non-constant steady states and analyze their stability. Finally, numerical simulations are performed to illustrate the theoretical results.

F-stability, entropy and energy gap for supercritical Fujita equation

We study some problems on self similar solutions to the Fujita equation when $p>(n+2)/(n-2)$, especially, the characterization of constant solutions by the energy. Motivated by recent advances in mean curvature flows, we introduce the notion of $F-$functional, $F$-stability and entropy for solutions of supercritical Fujita equation. Using these tools, we prove that among bounded positive self similar solutions, the constant solution has the lowest entropy. Furthermore, there is also a gap between the entropy of constant and non-constant solutions. As an application of these results, we prove that if $p>(n+2)/(n-2)$, then the blow up set of type I blow up solutions is the union of a $(n-1)-$ rectifiable set and a set of Hausdorff dimension at most $n-3$.

Stability of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality along Felli-Schneider curve: critical points at infinity

In this paper, we consider the following Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg (CKN for short) inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \bigg(\int_{{\mathbb R}^d}|x|^{-b(p+1)}|u|^{p+1}dx\bigg)^{\frac{2}{p+1}}\leq S_{a,b}\int_{{\mathbb R}^d}|x|^{-2a}|\nabla u|^2dx, \end{eqnarray*} where $u\in D^{1,2}_{a}({\mathbb R}^d)$, $d\geq2$, $p=\frac{d+2(1+a-b)}{d-2(1+a-b)}$ and \begin{eqnarray}\label{eq0003} \left\{\aligned &a<b<a+1,\quad d=2,\\ &a\leq b<a+1,\quad d\geq3. \endaligned \right. \end{eqnarray} Based on the ideas of \cite{DSW2024,FP2024}, we develop a suitable strategy to derive the following sharp stability of the critical points at infinity of the above CKN inequality in the degenerate case $d\geq2$, $b=b_{FS}(a)$ (Felli-Schneider curve) and $a<0$: let $ν\in {\mathbb N}$ and $u\in D^{1,2}_{a}({\mathbb R}^d)$ be an nonnegative function such that \begin{eqnarray}\label{eqqqnew0001} \left(ν-\frac12\right)\left(S_{a,b}^{-1}\right)^{\frac{p+1}{p-1}}<\|u\|^2_{D^{1,2}_a({\mathbb R}^d)}<\left(ν+\frac12\right)\left(S_{a,b}^{-1}\right)^{\frac{p+1}{p-1}} \end{eqnarray} Then we have the following sharp inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \inf_{\overrightarrowα_ν\in\left({\mathbb R}_+\right)^ν, \overrightarrowλ_ν\in {\mathbb R}^ν}\left\|u-\sum_{j=1}^να_j W_{λ_j}\right\|\lesssim\left\|-div(|x|^{-a}\nabla u)-|x|^{-b(p+1)}|u|^{p-1}u\right\|_{W^{-1,2}_a({\mathbb R}^d)}^{\frac{1}{3}} \end{eqnarray*} as $\left\|-div(|x|^{-a}\nabla u)-|x|^{-b(p+1)}|u|^{p-1}u\right\|_{W^{-1,2}_a({\mathbb R}^d)}\to0$. The significant finding in our result is that in the degenerate case, {\it the power of the optimal stability is an absolute constant $1/3$} (independent of $p$ and $ν$) which is quite different from the non-degenerate case \cite{DSW2024,WW2022}.

Quantitative stability of the total $Q$-curvature near minimizing metrics

Under appropriate positivity hypotheses, we prove quantitative estimates for the total $k$-th order $Q$-curvature functional near minimizing metrics on any smooth, closed $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold for every integer $1 \leq k < \frac{n}{2}$. More precisely, we show that on a generic closed Riemannian manifold the distance to the minimizing set of metrics is controlled quadratically by the $Q$-curvature energy deficit, extending recent work by Engelstein, Neumayer and Spolaor in the case $k=1$. Next we prove, for any integer $1 \leq k< \frac{n}{2}$, the existence of an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold such that the $k$-th order $Q$-curvature deficit controls a higher power of the distance to the minimizing set. We believe that these degenerate examples are of independent interest and can be used for further development in the field.

Higher order Bol's inequality and its applications

In the conformal class of Euclidean space, we give some volume comparison theorems with help of Q-curvature. Meanwhile, for compact four dimensional manifolds with non-negative scalar curvature, we give a volume rigidity theorem with respect to Q-curvature. Finally, we make use of these results to give some sufficient and necessary conditions for the existence of solutions to some conformally invariant equations which answers an open problem raised by Hyder-Martinazzi (2021, JDE).

Co-existence of Type II blow-ups with multiple blow-up rates for five-dimensional heat equation with critical nonlinear boundary conditions

We consider the following five-dimensional heat equation with critical boundary condition \begin{equation*} \partial_t u=Δu \mbox{ \ in \ } \mathbb{R}_+^5\times (0,T) , \quad -\partial_{x_5}u =|u|^\frac{2}{3}u \mbox{ \ on \ } \pp \mathbb{R}^5_+ \times (0,T) . \end{equation*} Given $\mathfrak{o}$ distinct boundary points $q^{[i]} \in \partial \mathbb{R}_+^5$, and $\mathfrak{o}$ integers $l_i\in \mathbb{N}$ (possibly duplicated), $i=1,2,\dots, \mathfrak{o}$, for $T>0$ sufficiently small, we construct a finite-time blow-up solution $u$ with a type II blow-up rate $(T-t)^{-3l_i -3}$ for $x$ near $q^{[i]}$. This seems to be the first result of the co-existence of type II blowups with different blow-up rates. To accommodate highly unstable blowups with different blowup rates, we first develop a unified linear theory for the inner problem with more time decay in the blow-up scheme through restriction on the spatial growth of the right-hand side, and then use vanishing adjustment functions for deriving multiple rates at distinct points. This paper is inspired by [25, 52, 60].

Quantitative stability of harmonic maps from $\mathbb{R}^2$ to $\mathbb{S}^2$ with higher degree

For degree $\pm 1$ harmonic maps from $\mathbb{R}^2$ (or $\mathbb{S}^2$) to $\mathbb{S}^2$, Bernand-Mantel, Muratov and Simon \cite{bernand2021quantitative} recently establish a uniformly quantitative stability estimate. Namely, for any map $u:\mathbb{R}^2\to \mathbb{S}^2$ with degree $\pm 1$, the discrepancy of its Dirichlet energy and $4π$ can linearly control the $\dot H^1$-difference of $u$ from the set of degree $\pm 1$ harmonic maps. Whether a similar estimate holds for harmonic maps with higher degree is unknown. In this paper, we prove that a similar quantitative stability result for higher degree is true only in local sense. Namely, given a harmonic map, a similar estimate holds if $u$ is already sufficiently near to it (modulo Möbius transform) and the bound in general depends on the given harmonic map. More importantly, we investigate an example of degree 2 case thoroughly, which shows that it fails to have a uniformly quantitative estimate like the degree $\pm 1$ case. This phenomenon show the striking difference of degree $\pm1$ ones and higher degree ones. Finally, we also conjecture a new uniformly quantitative stability estimate based on our computation.

On a variational model for the continuous mechanics exhibiting hexagonal to square Phase Transitions

Inspired by Conti and Zanzotto \cite{Conti2004A}, we reformulate a simple variational model for reconstructive phase transitions in crystals arising in continuum mechanics in the framework of Landau's theory of phase transition(with slight modification). We provide and prove that this class of modular invariant functions admit exactly hexagonal-square lattices minimizers without passing through rhombic lattices, being the first rigorous result in this regard. Our result gives an affirmative answer to an open problem by in \cite{Conti2004A}. In addition, our result has independent interest from number theory.

On Dancer's conjecture for stable solutions with sign-changing nonlinearity

We establish a Liouville type result for stable solutions for a wide class of second order semilinear elliptic equations in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ with sign-changing nonlinearity $f$. Under the hypothesis that the equation does not have any nonconstant one dimensional stable solution, and a further nondegeneracy condition of $f$ at its zero points, we show that in any dimension, stable solutions of the equation must be constant. This partially answers a question raised by Dancer.

Finite-time singularity formation for the heat flow of the $H$-system

We construct the first example of finite time blow-up solutions for the heat flow of the $H$-system, describing the evolution of surfaces with constant mean curvature \begin{equation*} \left\{ \begin{aligned} &u_t = Δu - 2u_{x_1}\wedge u_{x_2}~\quad\text{ in }~\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{R}_+,\\ &u(\cdot, 0) = u_0~\qquad\qquad~\text{ in }~\mathbb{R}^2, \end{aligned} \right. \end{equation*} where $u$: $\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{R}_+\to \mathbb{R}^3$. The singularity at finite time forms as a scaled least energy $H$-bubble, denoted as $W$, exhibiting type II blow-up speed. One key observation is that the linearized operators around $W$ projected onto $W^\perp$ and in the $W$-direction are in fact decoupled. On $W^\perp$, the linearization is the linearized harmonic map heat flow, while in the $W$-direction, it is the linearized Liouville-type flow. Based on this, we also prove the non-degeneracy of the $H$-bubbles with any degree.

Leapfrogging vortex rings for the 3-dimensional incompressible Euler equations

A classical problem in fluid dynamics concerns the interaction of multiple vortex rings sharing a common axis of symmetry in an incompressible, inviscid $3$-dimensional fluid. Helmholtz (1858) observed that a pair of similar thin, coaxial vortex rings may pass through each other repeatedly due to the induced flow of the rings acting on each other. This celebrated configuration, known as leapfrogging, has not yet been rigorously established. We provide a mathematical justification for this phenomenon by constructing a smooth solution of the 3d Euler equations exhibiting this motion pattern.

Stability of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg inequality: the existence of minimizers

In this paper, we consider the following variational problem: \begin{eqnarray*} \inf_{u\in D^{1,2}_a(\bbr^N)\backslash\mathcal{Z}}\frac{\|u\|^2_{D^{1,2}_a(\bbr^N)}-C_{a,b,N}^{-1}\|u\|^2_{L^{p+1}(|x|^{-b(p+1)},\bbr^N)}}{dist_{D^{1,2}_{a}}^2(u, \mathcal{Z})}:=c_{BE}, \end{eqnarray*} where $N\geq2$, $b_{FS}(a) 0$ with $b_{FS}(a)$ being the Felli-Schneider curve, $p=\frac{N+2(1+a-b)}{N-2(1+a-b)}$, $\mathcal{Z}= \{ c τ^{a_c-a}W(τx)\mid c\in\bbr\backslash\{0\}, τ>0\}$ and up to dilations and scalar multiplications, $W(x)$, which is positive and radially symmetric, is the unique extremal function of the following classical Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg (CKN for short) inequality \begin{eqnarray*} \bigg(\int_{\bbr^N}|x|^{-b(p+1)}|u|^{p+1}dx\bigg)^{\frac{2}{p+1}}\leq C_{a,b,N}\int_{\bbr^N}|x|^{-2a}|\nabla u|^2dx \end{eqnarray*} with $C_{a,b,N}$ being the optimal constant. It is known in \cite{WW2022} that $c_{BE}>0$. In this paper, we prove that the above variational problem has a minimizer for $N\geq2$ under the following two assumptions: \begin{enumerate} \item[$(i)$]\quad $a_c^*\leq a<a_c$ and $a\leq b<a+1$, \item[$(ii)$]\quad $a<a_c^*$ and $b_{FS}^*(a)\leq b<a+1$, \end{enumerate} where $a_c^*=\bigg(1-\sqrt{\frac{N-1}{2N}}\bigg)a_c$ and \begin{eqnarray*} b_{FS}^*(a)=\frac{(a_c-a)N}{a_c-a+\sqrt{(a_c-a)^2+N-1}}+a-a_c. \end{eqnarray*} Our results extend that of Konig in \cite{K2023} for the Sobolev inequality to the CKN inequality. Moreover, we believe that our assumptions~$(i)$ and $(ii)$ are optimal for the existence of minimizers of the above variational problem.

Existence and Stability of a Boundary Layer with an Interior Spike in the Singularly Perturbed Shadow Gierer-Meinhardt System

The singularly perturbed Gierer-Meinhardt (GM) system in a bounded $d$-dimensional domain ($d\geq 2$) is known to exhibit boundary layer (BL) solutions for a non-zero activator flux. It was previously shown that such BL solutions can be destabilized by decreasing the activator flux below a stability threshold. Moreover, numerical simulations previously indicated that solutions consisting of a boundary layer and interior spike emerge after the destabilization of a BL solution. In this paper we use the method of matched asymptotic expansions to investigate the structure and stability of such "boundary layer spike" (BLS) solutions in the presence of an asymptotically small activator diffusivity $\varepsilon^2\ll 1$. We find that two types of BLS solutions, one of which is unconditionally linearly stable and the other unstable, can be constructed provided that the activator flux is sufficiently small. In this way we determine that there is an asymptotically large range of activator flux values for which both the BL solution and one of the BLS solutions are linearly stable. Formal asymptotic calculations are further validated by numerically simulating the singularly perturbed GM system.

Long-time dynamics for the energy critical heat equation in $R^5$

We investigate the long-time behavior of global solutions to the energy critical heat equation in $R^5$ \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} \pp_t u=Δu+|u|^{\frac{4}{3}} u ~&\mbox{ in }~ R^5 \times (t_0,\infty), u(\cdot,t_0)=u_0~&\mbox{ in }~ R^5. \end{cases} \end{equation*} For $t_0$ sufficiently large, we show the existence of positive solutions for a class of initial value $u_0(x)\sim |x|^{-γ}$ as $|x|\rightarrow \infty$ with $γ>\frac32$ such that the global solutions behave asymptotically \begin{equation*} \| u(\cdot,t) \|_{L^\infty (\R^5)} \sim \begin{cases} t^{-\frac{3(2-γ)}{2}} ~&\mbox{ if }~ \frac32<γ<2 (\ln t)^{-3} ~&\mbox{ if }~ γ=2 1 ~&\mbox{ if }~ γ>2 \end{cases} \mbox{ \ for \ } t >t_0, \end{equation*} which is slower than the self-similar time decay $t^{-\frac{3}{4}}$. These rates are inspired by Fila-King \cite[Conjecture 1.1]{FilaKing12}.
