Normalized solutions for Schrödinger equations with critical Sobolev exponent and mixed nonlinearities

In this paper, we consider the following nonlinear Schrödinger equations with mixed nonlinearities: \begin{eqnarray*} \left\{\aligned &-Δu=λu+μ|u|^{q-2}u+|u|^{2^*-2}u\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^N,\\ &u\in H^1(\bbr^N),\quad\int_{\bbr^N}u^2=a^2, \endaligned\right. \end{eqnarray*} where $N\geq3$, $μ>0$, $λ\in\mathbb{R}$ and $2 0$ large. \item[$(3)$]\quad Precisely asymptotic behaviors of ground states and mountain-pass solutions as $μ\to0$ and $μ$ goes to its upper bound. \end{enumerate} Our studies answer some questions proposed by Soave in \cite[Remarks~1.1, 1.2 and 8.1]{S20}.

Multi-Spike Solutions to the Fractional Gierer-Meinhardt System in a One-Dimensional Domain

In this paper we consider the existence and stability of multi-spike solutions to the fractional Gierer-Meinhardt model with periodic boundary conditions. In particular we rigorously prove the existence of symmetric and asymmetric two-spike solutions using a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction. The linear stability of these two-spike solutions is then rigorously analyzed and found to be determined by the eigenvalues of a certain $2\times 2$ matrix. Our rigorous results are complemented by formal calculations of $N$-spike solutions using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. In addition, we explicitly consider examples of one- and two-spike solutions for which we numerically calculate their relevant existence and stability thresholds. By considering a one-spike solution we determine that the introduction of fractional diffusion for the activator or inhibitor will respectively destabilize or stabilize a single spike solution with respect to oscillatory instabilities. Furthermore, when considering two-spike solutions we find that the range of parameter values for which asymmetric two-spike solutions exist and for which symmetric two-spike solutions are stable with respect to competition instabilities is expanded with the introduction of fractional inhibitor diffusivity. However our calculations indicate that asymmetric two-spike solutions are always linearly unstable.

Generalized Adler-Moser Polynomials and Multiple vortex rings for the Gross-Pitaevskii equation

New finite energy traveling wave solutions with small speed are constructed for the three dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation \begin{equation*} iΨ_t= ΔΨ+(1-|Ψ|^2)Ψ, \end{equation*} where $Ψ$ is a complex valued function defined on ${\mathbb R}^3\times{\mathbb R}$. These solutions have the shape of $2n+1$ vortex rings, far away from each other. Among these vortex rings, $n+1$ of them have positive orientation and the other $n$ of them have negative orientation. The location of these rings are described by the roots of a sequence of polynomials with rational coefficients. The polynomials found here can be regarded as a generalization of the classical Adler-Moser polynomials and can be expressed as the Wronskian of certain very special functions. The techniques used in the derivation of these polynomials should have independent interest.

Refined blowup analysis and nonexistence of Type II blowups for an energy critical nonlinear heat equation

We consider the energy critical semilinear heat equation $$ \left\{\begin{aligned} &\partial_t u-Δu =|u|^{\frac{4}{n-2}}u &\mbox{in } {\mathbb R}^n\times(0,T),\\ &u(x,0)=u_0(x), \end{aligned}\right. $$ where $ n\geq 3$, $u_0\in L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)$, and $T\in {\mathbb R}^+$ is the first blow up time. We prove that if $ n \geq 7$ and $ u_0 \geq 0$, then any blowup must be of Type I, i.e., \[\|u(\cdot, t)\|_{L^\infty({\mathbb R}^n)}\leq C(T-t)^{-\frac{1}{p-1}}.\] A similar result holds for bounded convex domains. The proof relies on a reverse inner-outer gluing mechanism and delicate analysis of bubbling behavior (bubbling tower/cluster).

Estimates for Liouville equation with quantized singularities

For Liouville equations with singular sources, the interpretation of the equation and its impact are most significant if the singular sources are quantized: the strength of each Dirac mass is a mutliple of $4π$. However the study of bubbling solutions around a quantized singular source is particularly challenging: near the singular source, the spherical Harnack inequality may not hold and there are multiple local maximums of bubbling solutions all swarming to the singular source. In this article we seek to provide a complete understanding of the blowup picture in this core difficulty and we establish two major types of results: First we prove that not only the first derivatives of coefficient functions tend to zero at the singular source, the second derivatives also have a vanishing estimate. Second we derive pointwise estimates for bubbling solutions to be approximated by global solutions, which have crucial applications in a number of important projects. Since bubbling solutions near a singular source are very commonly observed in geometry and physics, it seems that the estimates in this article can also be applied to many related equations and systems with various backgrounds.

Lamellar phase solutions for diblock copolymers with nonlocal diffusions

For a diblock copolymer with total chain length $γ>0$ and mass ratio $m\in(-1,1)$, we consider the problem of minimizing the doubly nonlocal free energy $$ \mathcal{E}_{\varepsilon}(u) =\mathcal{H}(u) +\frac{1}{\varepsilon^{2s}} \int_ΩW(u)\,dx +\frac{1}{2}\int_Ω \left|(-γ^{2}Δ)^{-\frac{1}{2}}(u-m)\right|^2\,dx $$ in a domain $Ω$, where $\mathcal{H}(u)$ is a fractional $H^s$-norm with $s\in(0,\frac12)$, and $W$ is a double-well potential. This arises in the study of micro-phase separation phenomena for diblock copolymers with nonlocal diffusions. On the unit interval, we identify the $Γ$-limit as $\varepsilon\to0^+$, and also find explicit isolated local minimizers associated the lamellar morphology phase in the case $m=0$, provided that the chain is sufficiently short or the nonlocal interaction is sufficiently strong (i.e. as $s\to0^+$). We stress that such extra condition is new for the nonlocal case and is not present in the classical model. The proof, while elementary, requires a careful analysis of the nonlocal integrals.

Classification of Blow-ups and Monotonicity Formula for Half Laplacian Nonlinear Heat Equation

We consider the nonlinear half laplacian heat equation $$ u_t+(-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u-|u|^{p-1}u=0,\quad \mathbb{R}^n\times (0, T). $$ We prove that all blows-up are type I, provided that $n \leq 4$ and $ 1<p<p_{*} (n)$ where $ p_{*} (n)$ is an explicit exponent which is below $\frac{n+1}{n-1}$, the critical Sobolev exponent. Central to our proof is a Giga-Kohn type monotonicity formula for half laplacian and a Liouville type theorem for self-similar nonlinear heat equation. This is the first instance of a monotonicity formula at the level of the nonlocal equation, without invoking the extension to the half-space.

Travelling and rotating solutions to the generalized inviscid surface quasi-geostrophic equation

For the generalized surface quasi-geostrophic equation $$\left\{ \begin{aligned} & \partial_t θ+u\cdot \nabla θ=0, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T), \\ & u=\nabla^\perp ψ, \quad ψ= (-Δ)^{-s}θ\quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2 \times (0,T) , \end{aligned} \right. $$ $0<s<1$, we consider for $k\ge1$ the problem of finding a family of $k$-vortex solutions $θ_\varepsilon(x,t)$ such that as $\varepsilon\to 0$ $$ θ_\varepsilon(x,t) \rightharpoonup \sum_{j=1}^k m_jδ(x-ξ_j(t)) $$ for suitable trajectories for the vortices $x=ξ_j(t)$. We find such solutions in the special cases of vortices travelling with constant speed along one axis or rotating with same speed around the origin. In those cases the problem is reduced to a fractional elliptic equation which is treated with singular perturbation methods. A key element in our construction is a proof of the non-degeneracy of the radial ground state for the so-called fractional plasma problem $$(-Δ)^sW = (W-1)^γ_+, \quad \text{in } \mathbb{R}^2, \quad 1<γ< \frac{1+s}{1-s}$$ whose existence and uniqueness have recently been proven in \cite{chan_uniqueness_2020}.

Multi-Spike Patterns in the Gierer-Meinhardt System with a Non-Zero Activator Boundary Flux

The structure, linear stability, and dynamics of localized solutions to singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion equations has been the focus of numerous rigorous, asymptotic, and numerical studies in the last few decades. However, with a few exceptions, these studies have often assumed homogeneous boundary conditions. Motivated by the recent focus on the analysis of bulk-surface coupled problems we consider the effect of inhomogeneous Neumann boundary conditions for the activator in the singularly perturbed one-dimensional Gierer-Meinhardt reaction-diffusion system. We show that these boundary conditions necessitate the formation of spikes that concentrate in a boundary layer near the domain boundaries. Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions we construct boundary layer spikes and derive a new class of shifted Nonlocal Eigenvalue Problems for which we rigorously prove partial stability results. Moreover by using a combination of asymptotic, rigorous, and numerical methods we investigate the structure and linear stability of selected one- and two-spike patterns. In particular we find that inhomogeneous Neumann boundary conditions increase both the range of parameter values over which asymmetric two-spike patterns exist and are stable.

An Asymptotic Analysis of Localized 3-D Spot Patterns for Gierer-Meinhardt Model: Existence, Linear Stability and Slow Dynamics

Localized spot patterns, where one or more solution components concentrates at certain points in the domain, are a common class of localized pattern for reaction-diffusion systems, and they arise in a wide range of modeling scenarios. In an arbitrary bounded 3-D domain, the existence, linear stability, and slow dynamics of localized multi-spot patterns is analyzed for the well-known singularly perturbed Gierer-Meinhardt (GM) activator-inhibitor system in the limit of a small activator diffusivity $\varepsilon^2\ll 1$. Our main focus is to classify the different types of multi-spot patterns, and predict their linear stability properties, for different asymptotic ranges of the inhibitor diffusivity $D$. For the range $D={\mathcal O}(\varepsilon^{-1})\gg 1$, although both symmetric and asymmetric quasi-equilibrium spot patterns can be constructed, the asymmetric patterns are shown to be always unstable. On this range of $D$, it is shown that symmetric spot patterns can undergo either competition instabilities or a Hopf bifurcation, leading to spot annihilation or temporal spot amplitude oscillations, respectively. For $D={\mathcal O}(1)$, only symmetric spot quasi-equilibria exist and they are linearly stable on ${\mathcal O}(1)$ time intervals. On this range, it is shown that the spot locations evolve slowly on an ${\mathcal O}(\varepsilon^{-3})$ time scale towards their equilibrium locations according to an ODE gradient flow, which is determined by a discrete energy involving the reduced-wave Green's function. The central role of the far-field behavior of a certain core problem, which characterizes the profile of a localized spot, for the construction of quasi-equilibria in the $D={\mathcal O}(1)$ and $D={\mathcal O}(\varepsilon^{-1})$ regimes, and in establishing some of their linear stability properties, is emphasized.

Travelling helices and the vortex filament conjecture in the incompressible Euler equations

We consider the Euler equations in ${\mathbb R}^3$ expressed in vorticity form. A classical question that goes back to Helmholtz is to describe the evolution of solutions with a high concentration around a curve. The work of Da Rios in 1906 states that such a curve must evolve by the so-called binormal curvature flow. Existence of true solutions concentrated near a given curve that evolves by this law is a long-standing open question that has only been answered for the special case of a circle travelling with constant speed along its axis, the thin vortex-rings. We provide what appears to be the first rigorous construction of {\em helical filaments}, associated to a translating-rotating helix. The solution is defined at all times and does not change form with time. The result generalizes to multiple similar helical filaments travelling and rotating together.

Classification of finite Morse index solutions of higher-order Gelfand-Liouville equation

We classify finite Morse index solutions of the following Gelfand-Liouville equation \begin{equation*} (-Δ)^{s} u= e^u \ \ \text{in} \ \ \mathbb{R}^n, \end{equation*} for $1 2s$ and \begin{equation*} \label{1.condition} \frac{ Γ(\frac{n+2s}{4})^2 }{ Γ(\frac{n-2s}{4})^2} < \frac{Γ(\frac{n}{2}) Γ(1+s)}{ Γ(\frac{n-2s}{2})}, \end{equation*} where $Γ$ is the classical Gamma function. The cases of $s=1$ and $s=2$ are settled by Dancer and Farina \cite{df,d} and Dupaigne et al. \cite{dggw}, respectively, using Moser iteration arguments established by Crandall and Rabinowitz \cite{CR}. The case of $0<s<1$ is established by Hyder-Yang in \cite{hy} applying arguments provided in \cite{ddw,fw}.

New type II Finite time blow-up for the energy supercritical heat equation

We consider the energy supercritical heat equation with the $(n-3)$-th Sobolev exponent \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{3},~&\mbox{ in } Ω\times (0,T),\\ u(x,t)=u|_{\partialΩ},~&\mbox{ on } \partialΩ\times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } Ω, \end{cases} \end{equation*} where $5\leq n\leq 7$, $Ω=\R^n$ or $Ω\subset \R^n$ is a smooth, bounded domain enjoying special symmetries. We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the singularity taking place along an $(n-4)$-dimensional {\em shrinking sphere} in $Ω$. More precisely, at leading order, the solution $u(x,t)$ is of the sharply scaled form $$u(x,t)\approx \la^{-1}(t)\frac{2\sqrt{2}}{1+\left|\frac{(r,z)-(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))}{\la(t)}\right|^2}$$ where $r=\sqrt{x_1^2+\cdots+x_{n-3}^2}$, $z=(x_{n-2},x_{n-1},x_n)$ with $x=(x_1,\cdots,x_n)\inΩ$. Moreover, the singularity location $$(ξ_r(t),ξ_z(t))\sim (\sqrt{2(n-4)(T-t)},z_0)~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T,$$ for some fixed $z_0$, and the blow-up rate $$\la(t)\sim \frac{T-t}{|\log(T-t)|^2}~\mbox{ as }~t\nearrow T.$$ This is a completely new phenomenon in the parabolic setting.

Extinction behaviour for the fast diffusion equations with critical exponent and Dirichlet boundary conditions

For a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subseteq\mathbb{R}^n$, $n\geq 3$, we consider the fast diffusion equation with critical sobolev exponent $$\frac{\partial w}{\partialτ} =Δw^{\frac{n-2}{n+2}}$$ under Dirichlet boundary condition $w(\cdot, τ) = 0$ on $\partialΩ$. Using the parabolic gluing method, we prove existence of an initial data $w_0$ such that the corresponding solution has extinction rate of the form $$\|w(\cdot, τ)\|_{L^\infty(Ω)} = γ_0(T-τ)^{\frac{n+2}{4}}\left|\ln(T-τ)\right|^{\frac{n+2}{2(n-2)}}(1+o(1))$$ as $t\to T^-$, here $T > 0$ is the finite extinction time of $w(x, τ)$. This generalizes and provides rigorous proof of a result of Galaktionov and King \cite{galaktionov2001fast} for the radially symmetric case $Ω=B_1(0) : = \{x\in \mathbb{R}^n||x| < 1\}\subset\mathbb{R}^n$.

On minima of sum of theta functions and Mueller-Ho Conjecture

Let $z=x+iy \in \mathbb{H}:=\{z= x+ i y\in\mathbb{C}: y>0\}$ and $ θ(s;z)=\sum_{(m,n)\in\mathbb{Z}^2 } e^{-s \frac{π}{y }|mz+n|^2}$ be the theta function associated with the lattice $Λ={\mathbb Z}\oplus z{\mathbb Z}$. In this paper we consider the following pair of minimization problems $$ \min_{ \mathbb{H} } θ(2;\frac{z+1}{2})+ρθ(1;z),\;\;ρ\in[0,\infty),$$ $$ \min_{ \mathbb{H} } θ(1; \frac{z+1}{2})+ρθ(2; z),\;\;ρ\in[0,\infty),$$ where the parameter $ρ\in[0,\infty)$ represents the competition of two intertwining lattices. We find that as $ρ$ varies the optimal lattices admit a novel pattern: they move from rectangular (the ratio of long and short side changes from $\sqrt3$ to 1), square, rhombus (the angle changes from $π/2$ to $π/3$) to hexagonal; furthermore, there exists a closed interval of $ρ$ such that the optimal lattices is always square lattice. This is in sharp contrast to optimal lattice shapes for single theta function ($ρ=\infty$ case), for which the hexagonal lattice prevails. As a consequence, we give a partial answer to optimal lattice arrangements of vortices in competing systems of Bose-Einstein condensates as conjectured (and numerically and experimentally verified) by Mueller-Ho \cite{Mue2002}.

Removability of singularities and superharmonicity for some fractional Laplacian equations

We study some qualitative properties (including removable singularities and superharmonicity) of non-negative solutions to $$ (-Δ)^γu=fu^p\quad\text{in }\mathbb R^n\setminusΣ$$ which are singular at $Σ$. Here $γ\in (0, \frac{n}{2})$. Among other things, we first prove that if $Σ$ is a compact set in $\mathbb R^n$ with Assouad dimension $\bf d$ (not necessarily an integer), ${\bf d} \frac{n-\bf d}{n-{\bf d}-2γ},$$ then $u\in L^p_{loc}(\mathbb R^n)$ and $u$ is a distributional solution in $\mathbb R^n$. Then we prove that $ (-Δ)^σu >0$ for all $ σ\in (0, γ)$, if $Σ=ϕ$.

ODE-methods in non-local equations

Non-local equations cannot be treated using classical ODE theorems. Nevertheless, several new methods have been introduced in the non-local gluing scheme of our previous article "On higher dimensional singularities for the fractional Yamabe problem: a non-local Mazzeo-Pacard program"; we survey and improve those, and present new applications as well. First, from the explicit symbol of the conformal fractional Laplacian, a variation of constants formula is obtained for fractional Hardy operators. We thus develop, in addition to a suitable extension in the spirit of Caffarelli--Silvestre, an equivalent formulation as an infinite system of second order constant coefficient ODEs. Classical ODE quantities like the Hamiltonian and Wrońskian may then be utilized. As applications, we obtain a Frobenius theorem and establish new Poho\vzaev identities. We also give a detailed proof for the non-degeneracy of the fast-decay singular solution of the fractional Lane-Emden equation.

Type II Finite time blow-up for the three dimensional energy critical heat equation

We consider the following Cauchy problem for three dimensional energy critical heat equation \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} u_t=Δu+u^{5},~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3 \times (0,T),\\ u(x,0)=u_0(x),~&\mbox{ in } \ {\mathbb R}^3. \end{cases} \end{equation*} We construct type II finite time blow-up solution $u(x,t)$ with the blow-up rates $ \| u\|_{L^\infty} \sim (T-t)^{-k}$, where $ k=1,2,... $. This gives a rigorous proof of the formal computations by Filippas, Herrero and Velazquez \cite{fhv}. This is the first instance of type II finite time blow-up for three dimensional energy critical heat equation.
