Sketch-to-Design: Context-based Part Assembly

Designing 3D objects from scratch is difficult, especially when the user intent is fuzzy without a clear target form. In the spirit of modeling-by-example, we facilitate design by providing reference and inspiration from existing model contexts. We rethink model design as navigating through different possible combinations of part assemblies based on a large collection of pre-segmented 3D models. We propose an interactive sketch-to-design system, where the user sketches prominent features of parts to combine. The sketched strokes are analyzed individually and in context with the other parts to generate relevant shape suggestions via a design gallery interface. As the session progresses and more parts get selected, contextual cues becomes increasingly dominant and the system quickly converges to a final design. As a key enabler, we use pre-learned part-based contextual information to allow the user to quickly explore different combinations of parts. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for efficiently designing new variations from existing shapes.

Statistical analysis on detecting recombination sites in DNA-beta satellites associated with the old world geminiviruses

Although an exchange of genetic information by recombination plays an important role in the evolution of viruses, it is not clear how it generates diversity. {\it Geminiviruses} are plant viruses which have ambisense single-stranded circular DNA genomes and one of the most economically important plant viruses in agricultural production. Small circular single-stranded DNA satellites, termed DNA-$β$, have recently been found associated with some geminivirus infections. In this paper we analyze a satellite molecule DNA-$β$ of geminiviruses for recombination events using phylogenetic and statistical analysis and we find that one strain from ToLCMaB has a recombination pattern and is possibly recombinant molecule between two strains from two species, PaLCuB-[IN:Chi:05] (major parent) and ToLCB-[IN:CP:04] (minor parent).

A Non-Cooperative Method for Path Loss Estimation in Femtocell Networks

A macrocell superposed by indoor deployed femtocells forms a geography-overlapped and spectrum-shared two tier network, which can efficiently improve coverage and enhance system capacity. It is important for reducing inter-tier co-channel interference that any femtocell user (FU) can select suitable access channel according to the path losses between itself and the macrocell users (MUs). Path loss should be estimated non-cooperatively since information exchange is difficult between macrocell and femtocells. In this paper, a novel method is proposed for FU to estimate the path loss between itself and any MU independently. According to the adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) mode information broadcasted by the macrocell base station (BS), FU first estimates the path loss between BS and a MU by using Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) method. The probability distribution function (PDF) and statistics of the transmission power of the MU is then derived. According to the sequence of received powers from the MU, FU estimates the path loss between itself and the MU by using minimum mean square error (MMSE) method. Simulation results show that the proposed method can efficiently estimate the path loss between any FU and any MU in all kinds of conditions.

Dickson Invariants in the image of the Steenrod Square

Let D_n be the Dickson invariant ring of F_2[X_1,...,X_n] acted by the general linear group GL(n,\F_2). In this paper, we provide an elementary proof of the conjecture by [Hung]: each element in D_n is in the image of the Steenrod square in F_2[X_1,...,X_n], where n>3.
