GPT-4V(ision) is a Human-Aligned Evaluator for Text-to-3D Generation

Despite recent advances in text-to-3D generative methods, there is a notable absence of reliable evaluation metrics. Existing metrics usually focus on a single criterion each, such as how well the asset aligned with the input text. These metrics lack the flexibility to generalize to different evaluation criteria and might not align well with human preferences. Conducting user preference studies is an alternative that offers both adaptability and human-aligned results. User studies, however, can be very expensive to scale. This paper presents an automatic, versatile, and human-aligned evaluation metric for text-to-3D generative models. To this end, we first develop a prompt generator using GPT-4V to generate evaluating prompts, which serve as input to compare text-to-3D models. We further design a method instructing GPT-4V to compare two 3D assets according to user-defined criteria. Finally, we use these pairwise comparison results to assign these models Elo ratings. Experimental results suggest our metric strongly align with human preference across different evaluation criteria.

UMIE: Unified Multimodal Information Extraction with Instruction Tuning

Multimodal information extraction (MIE) gains significant attention as the popularity of multimedia content increases. However, current MIE methods often resort to using task-specific model structures, which results in limited generalizability across tasks and underutilizes shared knowledge across MIE tasks. To address these issues, we propose UMIE, a unified multimodal information extractor to unify three MIE tasks as a generation problem using instruction tuning, being able to effectively extract both textual and visual mentions. Extensive experiments show that our single UMIE outperforms various state-of-the-art (SoTA) methods across six MIE datasets on three tasks. Furthermore, in-depth analysis demonstrates UMIE's strong generalization in the zero-shot setting, robustness to instruction variants, and interpretability. Our research serves as an initial step towards a unified MIE model and initiates the exploration into both instruction tuning and large language models within the MIE domain. Our code, data, and model are available at https://github.com/ZUCC-AI/UMIE

APG: Adaptive Parameter Generation Network for Click-Through Rate Prediction

In many web applications, deep learning-based CTR prediction models (deep CTR models for short) are widely adopted. Traditional deep CTR models learn patterns in a static manner, i.e., the network parameters are the same across all the instances. However, such a manner can hardly characterize each of the instances which may have different underlying distributions. It actually limits the representation power of deep CTR models, leading to sub-optimal results. In this paper, we propose an efficient, effective, and universal module, named as Adaptive Parameter Generation network (APG), which can dynamically generate parameters for deep CTR models on-the-fly based on different instances. Extensive experimental evaluation results show that APG can be applied to a variety of deep CTR models and significantly improve their performance. Meanwhile, APG can reduce the time cost by 38.7\% and memory usage by 96.6\% compared to a regular deep CTR model. We have deployed APG in the industrial sponsored search system and achieved 3\% CTR gain and 1\% RPM gain respectively.

Robust Computer Vision in an Ever-Changing World: A Survey of Techniques for Tackling Distribution Shifts

AI applications are becoming increasingly visible to the general public. There is a notable gap between the theoretical assumptions researchers make about computer vision models and the reality those models face when deployed in the real world. One of the critical reasons for this gap is a challenging problem known as distribution shift. Distribution shifts tend to vary with complexity of the data, dataset size, and application type. In our paper, we discuss the identification of such a prominent gap, exploring the concept of distribution shift and its critical significance. We provide an in-depth overview of various types of distribution shifts, elucidate their distinctions, and explore techniques within the realm of the data-centric domain employed to address them. Distribution shifts can occur during every phase of the machine learning pipeline, from the data collection stage to the stage of training a machine learning model to the stage of final model deployment. As a result, it raises concerns about the overall robustness of the machine learning techniques for computer vision applications that are deployed publicly for consumers. Different deep learning models each tailored for specific type of data and tasks, architectural pipelines; highlighting how variations in data preprocessing and feature extraction can impact robustness., data augmentation strategies (e.g. geometric, synthetic and learning-based); demonstrating their role in enhancing model generalization, and training mechanisms (e.g. transfer learning, zero-shot) fall under the umbrella of data-centric methods. Each of these components form an integral part of the neural-network we analyze contributing uniquely to strengthening model robustness against distribution shifts. We compare and contrast numerous AI models that are built for mitigating shifts in hidden stratification and spurious correlations, ...

Practical Blind Image Denoising via Swin-Conv-UNet and Data Synthesis

While recent years have witnessed a dramatic upsurge of exploiting deep neural networks toward solving image denoising, existing methods mostly rely on simple noise assumptions, such as additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), JPEG compression noise and camera sensor noise, and a general-purpose blind denoising method for real images remains unsolved. In this paper, we attempt to solve this problem from the perspective of network architecture design and training data synthesis. Specifically, for the network architecture design, we propose a swin-conv block to incorporate the local modeling ability of residual convolutional layer and non-local modeling ability of swin transformer block, and then plug it as the main building block into the widely-used image-to-image translation UNet architecture. For the training data synthesis, we design a practical noise degradation model which takes into consideration different kinds of noise (including Gaussian, Poisson, speckle, JPEG compression, and processed camera sensor noises) and resizing, and also involves a random shuffle strategy and a double degradation strategy. Extensive experiments on AGWN removal and real image denoising demonstrate that the new network architecture design achieves state-of-the-art performance and the new degradation model can help to significantly improve the practicability. We believe our work can provide useful insights into current denoising research.

Multi-scale Iterative Refinement towards Robust and Versatile Molecular Docking

Molecular docking is a key computational tool utilized to predict the binding conformations of small molecules to protein targets, which is fundamental in the design of novel drugs. Despite recent advancements in geometric deep learning-based approaches leading to improvements in blind docking efficiency, these methods have encountered notable challenges, such as limited generalization performance on unseen proteins, the inability to concurrently address the settings of blind docking and site-specific docking, and the frequent occurrence of physical implausibilities such as inter-molecular steric clash. In this study, we introduce DeltaDock, a robust and versatile framework designed for efficient molecular docking to overcome these challenges. DeltaDock operates in a two-step process: rapid initial complex structures sampling followed by multi-scale iterative refinement of the initial structures. In the initial stage, to sample accurate structures with high efficiency, we develop a ligand-dependent binding site prediction model founded on large protein models and graph neural networks. This model is then paired with GPU-accelerated sampling algorithms. The sampled structures are updated using a multi-scale iterative refinement module that captures both protein-ligand atom-atom interactions and residue-atom interactions in the following stage. Distinct from previous geometric deep learning methods that are conditioned on the blind docking setting, DeltaDock demonstrates superior performance in both blind docking and site-specific docking settings. Comprehensive experimental results reveal that DeltaDock consistently surpasses baseline methods in terms of docking accuracy. Furthermore, it displays remarkable generalization capabilities and proficiency for predicting physically valid structures, thereby attesting to its robustness and reliability in various scenarios.

On RIS-Aided SIMO Gaussian Channels: Towards A Single-RF MIMO Transceiver Architecture

In this paper, for a single-input multiple-output (SIMO) system aided by a passive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), the joint transmission accomplished by the single transmit antenna and the RIS with multiple controllable reflective elements is considered. Relying on a general capacity upper bound derived by a maximum-trace argument, we respectively characterize the capacity of such \rev{a} channel in the low-SNR or the rank-one regimes, in which the optimal configuration of the RIS is proved to be beamforming with carefully-chosen phase shifts. To exploit the potential of modulating extra information on the RIS, based on the QR decomposition, successive interference cancellation, and a strategy named \textit{partially beamforming and partially information-carrying}, we propose a novel transceiver architecture with only a single RF front end at the transmitter, by which the considered channel can be regarded as a concatenation of a vector Gaussian channel and several phase-modulated channels. Especially, we investigate a class of vector Gaussian channels with a hypersphere input support constraint, and not only generalize the existing result to arbitrary-dimensional real spaces but also present its high-order capacity asymptotics, by which both capacities of hypersphere-constrained channels and achievable rates of the proposed transceiver with two different signaling schemes can be well-approximated. Information-theoretic analyses show that the transceiver architecture designed for the SIMO channel has a boosted multiplexing gain, rather than one for the conventionally-used optimized beamforming scheme.Numerical results verify our derived asymptotics and show notable superiority of the proposed transceiver.

Instant3D: Fast Text-to-3D with Sparse-View Generation and Large Reconstruction Model

Text-to-3D with diffusion models has achieved remarkable progress in recent years. However, existing methods either rely on score distillation-based optimization which suffer from slow inference, low diversity and Janus problems, or are feed-forward methods that generate low-quality results due to the scarcity of 3D training data. In this paper, we propose Instant3D, a novel method that generates high-quality and diverse 3D assets from text prompts in a feed-forward manner. We adopt a two-stage paradigm, which first generates a sparse set of four structured and consistent views from text in one shot with a fine-tuned 2D text-to-image diffusion model, and then directly regresses the NeRF from the generated images with a novel transformer-based sparse-view reconstructor. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that our method can generate diverse 3D assets of high visual quality within 20 seconds, which is two orders of magnitude faster than previous optimization-based methods that can take 1 to 10 hours. PF-LRM: Pose-Free Large Reconstruction Model for Joint Pose and Shape Prediction

We propose a Pose-Free Large Reconstruction Model (PF-LRM) for reconstructing a 3D object from a few unposed images even with little visual overlap, while simultaneously estimating the relative camera poses in ~1.3 seconds on a single A100 GPU. PF-LRM is a highly scalable method utilizing the self-attention blocks to exchange information between 3D object tokens and 2D image tokens; we predict a coarse point cloud for each view, and then use a differentiable Perspective-n-Point (PnP) solver to obtain camera poses. When trained on a huge amount of multi-view posed data of ~1M objects, PF-LRM shows strong cross-dataset generalization ability, and outperforms baseline methods by a large margin in terms of pose prediction accuracy and 3D reconstruction quality on various unseen evaluation datasets. We also demonstrate our model's applicability in downstream text/image-to-3D task with fast feed-forward inference. Our project website is at: https://totoro97.github.io/pf-lrm .

DiffSCI: Zero-Shot Snapshot Compressive Imaging via Iterative Spectral Diffusion Model

This paper endeavors to advance the precision of snapshot compressive imaging (SCI) reconstruction for multispectral image (MSI). To achieve this, we integrate the advantageous attributes of established SCI techniques and an image generative model, propose a novel structured zero-shot diffusion model, dubbed DiffSCI. DiffSCI leverages the structural insights from the deep prior and optimization-based methodologies, complemented by the generative capabilities offered by the contemporary denoising diffusion model. Specifically, firstly, we employ a pre-trained diffusion model, which has been trained on a substantial corpus of RGB images, as the generative denoiser within the Plug-and-Play framework for the first time. This integration allows for the successful completion of SCI reconstruction, especially in the case that current methods struggle to address effectively. Secondly, we systematically account for spectral band correlations and introduce a robust methodology to mitigate wavelength mismatch, thus enabling seamless adaptation of the RGB diffusion model to MSIs. Thirdly, an accelerated algorithm is implemented to expedite the resolution of the data subproblem. This augmentation not only accelerates the convergence rate but also elevates the quality of the reconstruction process. We present extensive testing to show that DiffSCI exhibits discernible performance enhancements over prevailing self-supervised and zero-shot approaches, surpassing even supervised transformer counterparts across both simulated and real datasets. Our code will be available.

On the Opportunities of Green Computing: A Survey

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has achieved significant advancements in technology and research with the development over several decades, and is widely used in many areas including computing vision, natural language processing, time-series analysis, speech synthesis, etc. During the age of deep learning, especially with the arise of Large Language Models, a large majority of researchers' attention is paid on pursuing new state-of-the-art (SOTA) results, resulting in ever increasing of model size and computational complexity. The needs for high computing power brings higher carbon emission and undermines research fairness by preventing small or medium-sized research institutions and companies with limited funding in participating in research. To tackle the challenges of computing resources and environmental impact of AI, Green Computing has become a hot research topic. In this survey, we give a systematic overview of the technologies used in Green Computing. We propose the framework of Green Computing and devide it into four key components: (1) Measures of Greenness, (2) Energy-Efficient AI, (3) Energy-Efficient Computing Systems and (4) AI Use Cases for Sustainability. For each components, we discuss the research progress made and the commonly used techniques to optimize the AI efficiency. We conclude that this new research direction has the potential to address the conflicts between resource constraints and AI development. We encourage more researchers to put attention on this direction and make AI more environmental friendly.

Bounded and Unbiased Composite Differential Privacy

The objective of differential privacy (DP) is to protect privacy by producing an output distribution that is indistinguishable between any two neighboring databases. However, traditional differentially private mechanisms tend to produce unbounded outputs in order to achieve maximum disturbance range, which is not always in line with real-world applications. Existing solutions attempt to address this issue by employing post-processing or truncation techniques to restrict the output results, but at the cost of introducing bias issues. In this paper, we propose a novel differentially private mechanism which uses a composite probability density function to generate bounded and unbiased outputs for any numerical input data. The composition consists of an activation function and a base function, providing users with the flexibility to define the functions according to the DP constraints. We also develop an optimization algorithm that enables the iterative search for the optimal hyper-parameter setting without the need for repeated experiments, which prevents additional privacy overhead. Furthermore, we evaluate the utility of the proposed mechanism by assessing the variance of the composite probability density function and introducing two alternative metrics that are simpler to compute than variance estimation. Our extensive evaluation on three benchmark datasets demonstrates consistent and significant improvement over the traditional Laplace and Gaussian mechanisms. The proposed bounded and unbiased composite differentially private mechanism will underpin the broader DP arsenal and foster future privacy-preserving studies.

CDR-Adapter: Learning Adapters to Dig Out More Transferring Ability for Cross-Domain Recommendation Models

Data sparsity and cold-start problems are persistent challenges in recommendation systems. Cross-domain recommendation (CDR) is a promising solution that utilizes knowledge from the source domain to improve the recommendation performance in the target domain. Previous CDR approaches have mainly followed the Embedding and Mapping (EMCDR) framework, which involves learning a mapping function to facilitate knowledge transfer. However, these approaches necessitate re-engineering and re-training the network structure to incorporate transferrable knowledge, which can be computationally expensive and may result in catastrophic forgetting of the original knowledge. In this paper, we present a scalable and efficient paradigm to address data sparsity and cold-start issues in CDR, named CDR-Adapter, by decoupling the original recommendation model from the mapping function, without requiring re-engineering the network structure. Specifically, CDR-Adapter is a novel plug-and-play module that employs adapter modules to align feature representations, allowing for flexible knowledge transfer across different domains and efficient fine-tuning with minimal training costs. We conducted extensive experiments on the benchmark dataset, which demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach over several state-of-the-art CDR approaches.

Multimodal ChatGPT for Medical Applications: an Experimental Study of GPT-4V

In this paper, we critically evaluate the capabilities of the state-of-the-art multimodal large language model, i.e., GPT-4 with Vision (GPT-4V), on Visual Question Answering (VQA) task. Our experiments thoroughly assess GPT-4V's proficiency in answering questions paired with images using both pathology and radiology datasets from 11 modalities (e.g. Microscopy, Dermoscopy, X-ray, CT, etc.) and fifteen objects of interests (brain, liver, lung, etc.). Our datasets encompass a comprehensive range of medical inquiries, including sixteen distinct question types. Throughout our evaluations, we devised textual prompts for GPT-4V, directing it to synergize visual and textual information. The experiments with accuracy score conclude that the current version of GPT-4V is not recommended for real-world diagnostics due to its unreliable and suboptimal accuracy in responding to diagnostic medical questions. In addition, we delineate seven unique facets of GPT-4V's behavior in medical VQA, highlighting its constraints within this complex arena. The complete details of our evaluation cases are accessible at https://github.com/ZhilingYan/GPT4V-Medical-Report.

AdaptSSR: Pre-training User Model with Augmentation-Adaptive Self-Supervised Ranking

User modeling, which aims to capture users' characteristics or interests, heavily relies on task-specific labeled data and suffers from the data sparsity issue. Several recent studies tackled this problem by pre-training the user model on massive user behavior sequences with a contrastive learning task. Generally, these methods assume different views of the same behavior sequence constructed via data augmentation are semantically consistent, i.e., reflecting similar characteristics or interests of the user, and thus maximizing their agreement in the feature space. However, due to the diverse interests and heavy noise in user behaviors, existing augmentation methods tend to lose certain characteristics of the user or introduce noisy behaviors. Thus, forcing the user model to directly maximize the similarity between the augmented views may result in a negative transfer. To this end, we propose to replace the contrastive learning task with a new pretext task: Augmentation-Adaptive SelfSupervised Ranking (AdaptSSR), which alleviates the requirement of semantic consistency between the augmented views while pre-training a discriminative user model. Specifically, we adopt a multiple pairwise ranking loss which trains the user model to capture the similarity orders between the implicitly augmented view, the explicitly augmented view, and views from other users. We further employ an in-batch hard negative sampling strategy to facilitate model training. Moreover, considering the distinct impacts of data augmentation on different behavior sequences, we design an augmentation-adaptive fusion mechanism to automatically adjust the similarity order constraint applied to each sample based on the estimated similarity between the augmented views. Extensive experiments on both public and industrial datasets with six downstream tasks verify the effectiveness of AdaptSSR.

A Scalable Test Problem Generator for Sequential Transfer Optimization

Sequential transfer optimization (STO), which aims to improve the optimization performance on a task of interest by exploiting the knowledge captured from several previously-solved optimization tasks stored in a database, has been gaining increasing research attention over the years. However, despite the remarkable advances in algorithm design, the development of a systematic benchmark suite for comprehensive comparisons of STO algorithms received far less attention. Existing test problems are either simply generated by assembling other benchmark functions or extended from specific practical problems with limited scalability. The relationships between the optimal solutions of the source and target tasks in these problems are also often manually configured, limiting their ability to model different similarity relationships presented in real-world problems. Consequently, the good performance achieved by an algorithm on these problems might be biased and hard to be generalized to other problems. In light of the above, in this study, we first introduce four concepts for characterizing STO problems and present an important problem feature, namely similarity distribution, which quantitatively delineates the relationship between the optima of the source and target tasks. Then, we present the general design guidelines of STO problems and a particular STO problem generator with good scalability. Specifically, the similarity distribution of a problem can be easily customized, enabling a continuous spectrum of representation of the diverse similarity relationships of real-world problems. Lastly, a benchmark suite with 12 STO problems featured by a variety of customized similarity relationships is developed using the proposed generator. The source code of the problem generator is available at https://github.com/XmingHsueh/STOP-G.
