A quasi-local characterisation of $L^p$-Roe algebras

Very recently, Špakula and Tikuisis provide a new characterisation of (uniform) Roe algebras via quasi-locality when the underlying metric spaces have straight finite decomposition complexity. In this paper, we improve their method to deal with the $L^p$-version of (uniform) Roe algebras for any $p\in [1,\infty)$. Due to the lack of reflexivity on $L^1$-spaces, some extra work is required for the case of $p=1$.

Effective 3D Humerus and Scapula Extraction using Low-contrast and High-shape-variability MR Data

For the initial shoulder preoperative diagnosis, it is essential to obtain a three-dimensional (3D) bone mask from medical images, e.g., magnetic resonance (MR). However, obtaining high-resolution and dense medical scans is both costly and time-consuming. In addition, the imaging parameters for each 3D scan may vary from time to time and thus increase the variance between images. Therefore, it is practical to consider the bone extraction on low-resolution data which may influence imaging contrast and make the segmentation work difficult. In this paper, we present a joint segmentation for the humerus and scapula bones on a small dataset with low-contrast and high-shape-variability 3D MR images. The proposed network has a deep end-to-end architecture to obtain the initial 3D bone masks. Because the existing scarce and inaccurate human-labeled ground truth, we design a self-reinforced learning strategy to increase performance. By comparing with the non-reinforced segmentation and a classical multi-atlas method with joint label fusion, the proposed approach obtains better results.

Real-Time Human-Robot Interaction for a Service Robot Based on 3D Human Activity Recognition and Human-mimicking Decision Mechanism

This paper describes the development of a real-time Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) system for a service robot based on 3D human activity recognition and human-like decision mechanism. The Human-Robot Interactive (HRI) system, which allows one person to interact with a service robot using natural body language, collects sequences of 3D skeleton joints comprising rich human movement information about the user via Microsoft Kinect. This information is used to train a three-layer Long-Short-Term Memory (LSTM) network for human action recognition. The robot understands user intent based on an online LSTM network test, and responds to the user via movements of the robotic arm or chassis. Furthermore, the human-like decision mechanism is also fused into this process, which allows the robot to instinctively decide whether to interrupt the current task according to task priority. The framework of the overall system is established on the Robot Operating System (ROS) platform. The real-life activity interaction between our service robot and the user was conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of developed HRI system.

Rigidity of $\ell^p$ Roe-type algebras

We investigate the rigidity of the $\ell^p$ analog of Roe-type algebras. In particular, we show that if $p\in[1,\infty)\setminus\{2\}$, then an isometric isomorphism between the $\ell^p$ uniform Roe algebras of two metric spaces with bounded geometry yields a bijective coarse equivalence between the underlying metric spaces, while a stable isometric isomorphism yields a coarse equivalence. We also obtain similar results for other $\ell^p$ Roe-type algebras. In this paper, we do not assume that the metric spaces have Yu's property A or finite decomposition complexity.

Amenability of coarse spaces and K-algebras

In this article we analyze the notions of amenability and paradoxical decomposition from an algebraic perspective. We consider this dichotomy for locally finite extended metric spaces and for general algebras over commutative fields. In the context of algebras we also study the relation of amenability with proper infiniteness. We apply our general analysis to two important classes of algebras: the unital Leavitt path algebras and the translation algebras on locally finite extended metric spaces. In particular, we show that the amenability of a metric space is equivalent to the algebraic amenability of the corresponding translation algebra.

Amenability and uniform Roe algebras

Amenability for groups can be extended to metric spaces, algebras over commutative fields and $C^*$-algebras by adapting the notion of Følner nets. In the present article we investigate the close ties among these extensions and show that these three pictures unify in the context of the uniform Roe algebra $C_u^*(X)$ over a metric space $(X,d)$ with bounded geometry. In particular, we show that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $(X,d)$ is amenable; (2) the translation algebra generating $C_u^*(X)$ is algebraically amenable (3) $C_u^*(X)$ has a tracial state; (4) $C_u^*(X)$ is not properly infinite; (5) $[1]_0\neq [0]_0$ in the $K_0$-group $K_0(C_u^*(X))$; (6) $C_u^*(X)$ does not contain the Leavitt algebra as a unital $*$-subalgebra; (7) $C_u^*(X)$ is a Følner $C^*$-algebra in the sense that it admits a net of unital completely positive maps into matrices which is asymptotically multiplicative in the normalized trace norm. We also show that every possible tracial state of the uniform Roe algebra $C_u^*(X)$ is amenable.

Ideal structure and pure infiniteness of ample groupoid $C^*$-algebras

In this paper, we study the ideal structure of reduced $C^*$-algebras $C^*_r(G)$ associated to étale groupoids $G$. In particular, we characterize when there is a one-to-one correspondence between the closed, two-sided ideals in $C_r^*(G)$ and the open invariant subsets of the unit space $G^{(0)}$ of $G$. As a consequence, we show that if $G$ is an inner exact, essentially principal, ample groupoid, then $C_r^*(G)$ is (strongly) purely infinite if and only if every non-zero projection in $C_0(G^{(0)})$ is properly infinite in $C_r^*(G)$. We also establish a sufficient condition on the ample groupoid $G$ that ensures pure infiniteness of $C_r^*(G)$ in terms of paradoxicality of compact open subsets of the unit space $G^{(0)}$. Finally, we introduce the type semigroup for ample groupoids and also obtain a dichotomy result: Let $G$ be an ample groupoid with compact unit space which is minimal and topologically principal. If the type semigroup is almost unperforated, then $C_r^*(G)$ is a simple $C^*$-algebra which is either stably finite or strongly purely infinite.

Toward Marker-free 3D Pose Estimation in Lifting: A Deep Multi-view Solution

Lifting is a common manual material handling task performed in the workplaces. It is considered as one of the main risk factors for Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders. To improve work place safety, it is necessary to assess musculoskeletal and biomechanical risk exposures associated with these tasks, which requires very accurate 3D pose. Existing approaches mainly utilize marker-based sensors to collect 3D information. However, these methods are usually expensive to setup, time-consuming in process, and sensitive to the surrounding environment. In this study, we propose a multi-view based deep perceptron approach to address aforementioned limitations. Our approach consists of two modules: a "view-specific perceptron" network extracts rich information independently from the image of view, which includes both 2D shape and hierarchical texture information; while a "multi-view integration" network synthesizes information from all available views to predict accurate 3D pose. To fully evaluate our approach, we carried out comprehensive experiments to compare different variants of our design. The results prove that our approach achieves comparable performance with former marker-based methods, i.e. an average error of $14.72 \pm 2.96$ mm on the lifting dataset. The results are also compared with state-of-the-art methods on HumanEva-I dataset, which demonstrates the superior performance of our approach.

Automatic Safety Helmet Wearing Detection

Surveillance is essential for the safety of power substation. The detection of whether wearing safety helmets or not for perambulatory workers is the key component of overall intelligent surveillance system in power substation. In this paper, a novel and practical safety helmet detection framework based on computer vision, machine learning and image processing is proposed. In order to ascertain motion objects in power substation, the ViBe background modelling algorithm is employed. Moreover, based on the result of motion objects segmentation, real-time human classification framework C4 is applied to locate pedestrian in power substation accurately and quickly. Finally, according to the result of pedestrian detection, the safety helmet wearing detection is implemented using the head location, the color space transformation and the color feature discrimination. Extensive compelling experimental results in power substation illustrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Low dimensional properties of uniform Roe algebras

The goal of this paper is to study when uniform Roe algebras have certain $C^*$-algebraic properties in terms of the underlying space: in particular, we study properties like having stable rank one or real rank zero that are thought of as low dimensional, and connect these to low dimensionality of the underlying space in the sense of the asymptotic dimension of Gromov. Some of these results (for example, on stable rank one, cancellation, strong quasidiagonality, and finite decomposition rank) give definitive characterizations, while others (on real rank zero) are only partial and leave a lot open. We also establish results about $K$-theory, showing that all $K_0$-classes come from the inclusion of the canonical Cartan in low dimensional cases, but not in general; in particular, our $K$-theoretic results answer a question of Elliott and Sierakowski about vanishing of $K_0$ groups for uniform Roe algebras of non-amenable groups. Along the way, we extend some results about paradoxicality, proper infiniteness of projections in uniform Roe algebras, and supramenability from groups to general metric spaces. These are ingredients needed for our $K$-theoretic computations, but we also use them to give new characterizations of supramenability for metric spaces.

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing - The Downscaling Attack Against Deep Learning Applications

This paper considers security risks buried in the data processing pipeline in common deep learning applications. Deep learning models usually assume a fixed scale for their training and input data. To allow deep learning applications to handle a wide range of input data, popular frameworks, such as Caffe, TensorFlow, and Torch, all provide data scaling functions to resize input to the dimensions used by deep learning models. Image scaling algorithms are intended to preserve the visual features of an image after scaling. However, common image scaling algorithms are not designed to handle human crafted images. Attackers can make the scaling outputs look dramatically different from the corresponding input images. This paper presents a downscaling attack that targets the data scaling process in deep learning applications. By carefully crafting input data that mismatches with the dimension used by deep learning models, attackers can create deceiving effects. A deep learning application effectively consumes data that are not the same as those presented to users. The visual inconsistency enables practical evasion and data poisoning attacks to deep learning applications. This paper presents proof-of-concept attack samples to popular deep-learning-based image classification applications. To address the downscaling attacks, the paper also suggests multiple potential mitigation strategies.

Security Risks in Deep Learning Implementations

Advance in deep learning algorithms overshadows their security risk in software implementations. This paper discloses a set of vulnerabilities in popular deep learning frameworks including Caffe, TensorFlow, and Torch. Contrast to the small code size of deep learning models, these deep learning frameworks are complex and contain heavy dependencies on numerous open source packages. This paper considers the risks caused by these vulnerabilities by studying their impact on common deep learning applications such as voice recognition and image classifications. By exploiting these framework implementations, attackers can launch denial-of-service attacks that crash or hang a deep learning application, or control-flow hijacking attacks that cause either system compromise or recognition evasions. The goal of this paper is to draw attention on the software implementations and call for the community effort to improve the security of deep learning frameworks.

Classification of Uniform Roe algebras of locally finite groups

We study the uniform Roe algebras associated to locally finite groups. We show that for two countable locally finite groups $Γ$ and $Λ$, the associated uniform Roe algebras $C^*_u(Γ)$ and $C^*_u(Λ)$ are $*$-isomorphic if and only if their $K_0$ groups are isomorphic as ordered abelian groups with units. This can be seen as a non-separable non-simple analogue of the Glimm-Elliott classification of UHF algebras. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first classification result for a class of non-separable unital $C^*$-algebras. Along the way we also obtain a rigidity result: two countable locally finite groups are bijectively coarsely equivalent if and only if the associated uniform Roe algebras are $*$-isomorphic. Finally, we give a summary of $C^*$-algebraic characterizations for (not necessarily countable) locally finite discrete groups in terms of their uniform Roe algebras. In particular, we show that a discrete group $Γ$ is locally finite if and only if the associated uniform Roe algebra $\ell^\infty(Γ)\rtimes_r Γ$ is locally finite-dimensional.

The orbit method for the Baum-Connes Conjecture for algebraic groups over local function fields

The main purpose of this paper is to modify the orbit method for the Baum-Connes conjecture as developed by Chabert, Echterhoff and Nest in their proof of the Connes-Kasparov conjecture for almost connected groups \cite{MR2010742} in order to deal with linear algebraic groups over local function fields (i.e., non-archimedean local fields of positive characteristic). As a consequence, we verify the Baum-Connes conjecture for certain Levi-decomposable linear algebraic groups over local function fields. One of these is the Jacobi group, which is the semidirect product of the symplectic group and the Heisenberg group.

Exactness of locally compact groups

We give some new characterizations of exactness for locally compact second countable groups. In particular, we prove that a locally compact second countable group is exact if and only if it admits a topologically amenable action on a compact Hausdorff space. Experimental Observation of the Quantum Anomalous Hall Effect in a Magnetic Topological Insulator

The quantized version of the anomalous Hall effect has been predicted to occur in magnetic topological insulators, but the experimental realization has been challenging. Here, we report the observation of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in thin films of Cr-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3, a magnetic topological insulator. At zero magnetic field, the gate-tuned anomalous Hall resistance reaches the predicted quantized value of h/e^2,accompanied by a considerable drop of the longitudinal resistance. Under a strong magnetic field, the longitudinal resistance vanishes whereas the Hall resistance remains at the quantized value. The realization of the QAH effect may lead to the development of low-power-consumption electronics.

Deformations of the spin currents by topological screw dislocation and cosmic dispiration

We study the spin currents induced by topological screw dislocation and cosmic dispiration. By using the extended Drude model, we find that the spin dependent forces are modified by the nontrivial geometry. For the topological screw dislocation, only the direction of spin current is bended by deforming the spin polarization vector. In contrast, the force induced by cosmic dispiration could affect both the direction and magnitude of the spin current. As a consequence, the spin-Hall conductivity doesn't receive corrections from screw dislocation.
