Freedericksz-like positional transition of a micro-droplet suspended in a nematic cell

In this paper, a Freedericksz-like positional transition is found for a spherical micro-droplet suspended in a nematic liquid crystal cell in the presence of an external electric field. Based on the numerical calculation of elastic energy using Green function method, the equilibrium position of micro-droplet is decided through a competition between the buoyant force and the effective force built by the elastic energy gradient existing inside the nematic liquid crystal(NLC) cell. It is shown that the elastic energy dominates the kinetics of micro-droplet until the external field applied reaches a critical value large enough to flatten the elastic energy contour in the central region, which enables the asymmetric buoyant force to drive the liquid droplet abruptly from the cell midplane to a new equilibrium position. It is also found that such a threshold value of external field, which triggers positional transition, depends on thickness $L$ and Frank elastic constant $K$, in a Freedericksz-like manner, but multiplied by a factor of $3\sqrtπ$. An explicit formula proposed for the critical electric field agrees extremely well with the numerical calculation.

Multidimensional optical fractionation with holographic verification

The trajectories of colloidal particles driven through a periodic potential energy landscape can become kinetically locked in to directions dictated by the landscape's symmetries. When the landscape is realized with forces exerted by a structured light field, the path a given particle follows has been predicted to depend exquisitely sensitively on such properties as the particle's size and refractive index These predictions, however, have not been tested experimentally. Here, we describe measurements of colloidal silica spheres' transport through arrays of holographic optical traps that use holographic video microscopy to track individual spheres' motions in three dimensions and simultaneously to measure each sphere's radius and refractive index with part-per-thousand resolution. These measurements confirm previously untested predictions for the threshold of kinetically locked-in transport, and demonstrate the ability of optical fractionation to sort colloidal spheres with part-per-thousand resolution on multiple characteristics simultaneously.

Micromagnetic Simulations of Ferromagnetic Rings

Thin nanomagnetic rings have generated interest for fundamental studies of magnetization reversal and also for their potential in various applications, particularly as magnetic memories. They are a rare example of a geometry in which an analytical solution for the rate of thermally induced magnetic reversal has been determined, in an approximation whose errors can be estimated and bounded. In this work, numerical simulations of soft ferromagnetic rings are used to explore aspects of the analytical solution. The evolution of the energy near the transition states confirms that, consistent with analytical predictions, thermally induced magnetization reversal can have one of two intermediate states: either constant or soliton-like saddle configurations, depending on ring size and externally applied magnetic field. The results confirm analytical predictions of a transition in thermally activated reversal behavior as magnetic field is varied at constant ring size. Simulations also show that the analytic one dimensional model continues to hold even for wide rings.
