Adaptive isogeometric analysis of high-order phase-field fracture based on THB-splines

In recent decades, the study of fracture propagation in solids has increasingly relied on phase-field models. Several recent contributions have highlighted the potential of this approach in both static and dynamic frameworks. However, a major limitation remains the high computational cost. Two main strategies have been identified to mitigate this issue: the use of locally refined meshes and the adoption of higher-order models. In this work, leveraging Truncated Hierarchical B-splines (THB-splines), we introduce adaptive simulations of higher-order phase-field formulations (AT1 and AT2), focusing primarily on two-dimensional fracture problems.

A note on the interpretation of the statistical analysis of the $M_{\bullet}-M_{G}\sigma^2$ scaling relation

In the context of scaling relations between Supermassive Black Holes and host-galaxy properties, we aim to enhance the comparison between $M_{\bullet} - M_{G}\sigma^2$ and $M_{\bullet} - \sigma$ relations from a statistical point of view. First, it is suggested to take into account the predictive accuracy of the scaling relation, in addition to the classical measures of goodness of fit. Here, prediction accuracy is fairly evaluated according to a leave-one-out cross-validation strategy. Then, we spread more light on the analysis of residuals from the fitted scaling relation, in order to provide more useful information on the role played by the different variables in their correlation with the black hole mass. The findings from six samples are discussed.

Numerical investigation of a particle system compared with first and second gradient continua: Deformation and fracture phenomena

A discrete system constituted of particles interacting by means of a centroid-based law is numerically investigated. The elements of the system move in the plane, and the range of the interaction can be varied from a more local form (first-neighbours interaction) up to a generalized nth order interaction. The aim of the model is to reproduce the behaviour of deformable bodies with standard (Cauchy model) or generalized (second gradient) deformation energy density. The numerical results suggest that the considered discrete system can effectively reproduce the behaviour of first and second gradient continua. Moreover, a fracture algorithm is introduced and some comparison between firstand second-neighbour simulations are provided.
