Observation of linear and nonlinear light localization at the edges of moir\'e lattices

We observe linear and nonlinear light localization at the edges and in the corners of truncated moir\'e lattices created by the superposition of periodic mutually-twisted at Pythagorean angles square sublattices. Experimentally exciting corner linear modes in the fs-laser written moir\'e lattices we find drastic differences in their localization properties in comparison with the bulk excitations. We also address the impact of nonlinearity on the corner and bulk modes and experimentally observe the crossover from linear quasi-localized states to the surface solitons emerging at the higher input powers. Our results constitute the first experimental demonstration of localization phenomena induced by truncation of periodic moir\'e structures in photonic systems.

Observation of edge solitons in topological trimer arrays

We report the experimental observation of nonlinear light localization and edge soliton formation at the edges of fs-laser written trimer waveguide arrays, where transition from non-topological to topological phases is controlled by the spacing between neighboring trimers. We found that, in the former regime, edge solitons occur only above a considerable power threshold, whereas in the latter one they bifurcate from linear states. Edge solitons are observed in a broad power range where their propagation constant falls into one of the topological gaps of the system, while partial delocalization is observed when considerable nonlinearity drives the propagation constant into an allowed band, causing coupling with bulk modes. Our results provide direct experimental evidence of the coexistence and selective excitation in the same or in different topological gaps of two types of topological edge solitons with different internal structures, which can rarely be observed even in nontopological systems. This also constitutes the first experimental evidence of formation of topological solitons in a nonlinear system with more than one topological gap.

Nonlinear higher-order polariton topological insulator

We address the resonant response and bistability of the exciton-polariton corner states in a higher-order nonlinear topological insulator realized with kagome arrangement of microcavity pillars. Such states are resonantly excited and exist due to the balance between pump and losses, on the one hand, and between nonlinearity and dispersion in inhomogeneous potential landscape, on the other hand, for pump energy around eigen-energies of corresponding linear localized modes. Localization of the nonlinear corner states in a higher-order topological insulator can be efficiently controlled by tuning pump energy. We link the mechanism of corner state formation with symmetry of the truncated kagome array. Corner states coexist with densely packed edge states, but are well-isolated from them in energy. Nonlinear corner states persist even in the presence of perturbations in corner microcavity pillar.

Multidimensional hybrid Bose-Einstein condensates stabilized by lower-dimensional spin-orbit coupling

We show that attractive spinor Bose-Einstein condensates under the action of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman splitting form self-sustained stable two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) states in free space, even when SOC acts in a lower-dimensional form. We find that two-dimensional states are stabilized by one-dimensional (1D) SOC in a broad range of chemical potentials, for atom numbers (or norm of the spinor wavefunction) exceeding a threshold value, which strongly depends on the SOC strength and vanishes at a critical point. The zero-threshold point is a boundary between single-peaked and striped states, realizing hybrids combining 2D and 1D structural features. In a vicinity of such point, an asymptotic equation describing the bifurcation of the solitons from the linear spectrum is derived and investigated analytically. We show that striped 3D solitary states are as well stabilized by 2D SOC, albeit in a limited range of chemical potentials and norms.

Twisted toroidal vortex-solitons in inhomogeneous media with repulsive nonlinearity

Toroidal modes in the form of so-called Hopfions, with two independent winding numbers, a hidden one (twist, s), which characterizes a circular vortex thread embedded into a three-dimensional soliton, and the vorticity around the vertical axis m, appear in many fields, including the field theory, ferromagnetics, and semi- and superconductors. Such topological states are normally generated in multi-component systems, or as trapped quasi-linear modes in toroidal potentials. We uncover that stable solitons with this structure can be created, without any linear potential, in the single-component setting with the strength of repulsive nonlinearity growing fast enough from the center to the periphery, for both steep and smooth modulation profiles. Toroidal modes with s=1 and vorticity m=0,1,2 are produced. They are stable for m<=1, and do not exist for s>1. An approximate analytical solution is obtained for the twisted ring with s=1, m=0. Under the application of an external torque, it rotates like a solid ring. The setting can be implemented in BEC, by means of the Feshbach resonance controlled by inhomogene-ous magnetic fields.

Anderson cross-localization

We report Anderson localization in two-dimensional optical waveguide arrays with disorder in waveguide separation introduced along one axis of the array, in an uncorrelated fashion for each waveguide row. We show that the anisotropic nature of such disorder induces a strong localization along both array axes. The degree of localization in the cross-axis remains weaker than that in the direction in which disorder is introduced. This effect is illustrated both theoretically and experimentally.

Observation of the gradual transition from one-dimensional to two-dimensional Anderson localization

We study the gradual transition from one-dimensional to two-dimensional Anderson localization upon transformation of the dimensionality of disordered waveguide arrays. An effective transition from one- to two-dimensional system is achieved by increasing the number of rows forming the arrays. We observe that, for a given disorder level, Anderson localization becomes weaker with increasing number of rows, hence the effective dimension.

Wave localization at the boundary of disordered photonic lattices

We report on the experimental observation of reduced light energy transport and disorder-induced localization close to a boundary of a truncated one-dimensional (1D) disordered photonic lattice. Our observations uncover that near the boundary a higher level of disorder is required to obtain similar localization than in the bulk.

Two-dimensional solitons at interfaces between binary superlattices and homogeneous lattices

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional surface solitons residing at the interface between a homogeneous square lattice and a superlattice that consists of alternating "deep" and "shallow" waveguides. By exciting single waveguides in the first row of the superlattice, we show that solitons centered on deep sites require much lower powers than their respective counterparts centered on shallow sites. Despite the fact that the average refractive index of the superlattice waveguides is equal to the refractive index of the homogeneous lattice, the interface results in clearly asymmetric output patterns.

Observation of two-dimensional superlattice solitons

We observe experimentally two-dimensional solitons in superlattices comprising alternating deep and shallow waveguides fabricated via the femtosecond laser direct writing technique. We find that the symmetry of linear diffraction patterns as well as soliton shapes and threshold powers largely differ for excitations centered on deep and shallow sites. Thus, bulk and surface solitons centered on deep waveguides require much lower powers than their counterparts on shallow sites.

Light tunneling inhibition and anisotropic diffraction engineering in two-dimensional waveguide arrays

We address two-dimensional waveguide arrays where light tunneling into neighboring waveguides may be effectively suppressed by out-of-phase harmonic modulation of the refractive index in neighboring waveguides at suitable frequencies. Genuine two-dimensional features, such as anisotropic diffraction engineering, diffraction-free propagation along selected directions in the transverse plane and tunneling inhibition for multi-channel vortices, are shown to occur.

Nonlinearity-induced broadening of resonances in dynamically modulated couplers

We report the observation of nonlinearity-induced broadening of resonances in dynamically modulated directional couplers. When the refractive index of the guiding channels in the coupler is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in two channels, coupling can be completely inhibited at resonant modulation frequencies. We observe that nonlinearity broadens such resonances and that localization can be achieved even in detuned systems at power levels well below those required in unmodulated couplers.

Observation of two-dimensional coherent surface vector lattice solitons

We report the first experimental observation of vector surface solitons, which form at the edge and in the corner of two-dimensional laser-written waveguide arrays. These elliptically polarized vector states are composed of two orthogonally polarized components. They exist only above a power threshold and bifurcate from scalar surface solitons. The components of a vector soliton may have substantially different degrees of localization in certain parameter ranges.

Inhibition of light tunneling in waveguide arrays

We report the observation of almost perfect light tunneling inhibition at the edge and inside laser-written waveguide arrays due to band collapse. When the refractive index of the guiding channels is harmonically modulated along the propagation direction and out-of-phase in adjacent guides, light is trapped in the excited waveguide over a long distance due to resonances. The phenomenon can be used for tuning the localization threshold power.

Observation of two-dimensional defect surface solitons

We report on the experimental observation of two-dimensional solitons located in a defect channel at the surface of a hexagonal waveguide array. The threshold power for the excitation of defect surface solitons existing due to total internal reflection grows with decrease of the refractive index in negative defects and vanishes for sufficiently strong positive defects. Negative defects can also support linear surface modes existing due to Bragg-type reflections.

Soliton excitation in waveguide arrays with an effective intermediate dimensionality

We reveal and observe experimentally significant modifications undertaken by discrete solitons in waveguide lattices upon the continuous transformation of the lattice structure from one-dimensional to two-dimensional. Light evolution and soliton excitation in arrays with a gradually increasing number of rows are investigated, yielding solitons with an effective reduced dimensionality residing at the edge and in the bulk of the lattice.

Angular surface solitons in sectorial hexagonal arrays

We report on the experimental observation of corner surface solitons localized at the edges joining planar interfaces of hexagonal waveguide array with uniform nonlinear medium. The face angle between these interfaces has a strong impact on the threshold of soliton excitation as well as on the light energy drift and diffraction spreading.

Observation of surface solitons in chirped waveguide arrays

We report the observation of surface solitons in chirped semi-infinite waveguide arrays whose waveguides exhibit exponentially decreasing refractive indices. We show that the power threshold for surface wave formation decreases with an increase of the array chirp and that for sufficiently large chirp values linear surface modes are supported.
