Computing and software for LHCb Upgrade II

A second major upgrade of the LHCb experiment is necessary to allow full exploitation of the High Luminosity LHC for flavour physics. The new experiment will operate in Run 5 of the LHC at a luminosity up to $1.5\times 10^{34}cm^{-2}s^{-1}$. The experiment will therefore experience extremely high particle fluences and data rates, posing a high challenge not only for the detector but also for the software and computing resources needed to readout, reconstruct, select and analyse the data. This document presents these challenges and the ongoing and future R&D programme necessary to address them. This programme will benefit not only the LHCb Upgrade II experiment, but the whole particle physics community as similar challenges will be faced by the next generation of experiments.

Projections for Key Measurements in Heavy Flavour Physics

Precision studies of flavour-changing processes involving quarks and leptons provide a number of ways to improve knowledge of the Standard Model and search for physics beyond it. There are excellent short- and mid-term prospects for significantly improved measurements in heavy flavour physics (involving b and c hadrons and $\tau$ leptons), with upgrades in progress or planned for the ATLAS, CMS and LHCb experiments exploiting proton-proton collisions at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, and for the Belle II experiment operating with electron-positron collisions from the SuperKEKB accelerator in KEK. The expected sensitivities that can be achieved from these experiments for a number of key observables are presented, highlighting the complementarity of the different experiments and showing how the precision will improve with time. This international programme in heavy flavour physics will result in unprecedented capability to probe this sector of the Standard Model and, potentially, observe imprints of physics at higher energy scales than can be accessed directly.

Evidence for the decays $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{(*)0}\phi$ and updated measurements of the branching fractions of the $B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{(*)0}\phi$ decays

Evidence for the decays $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}\phi$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}\phi$ is reported with a significance of 3.6$\,\sigma$ and 4.3$\,\sigma$, respectively. The analysis employs $pp$ collision data at centre-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=7$, 8 and 13 TeV collected by the LHCb detector and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 $\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}\phi) = (7.7\pm2.1\pm0.7\pm0.7)\times10^{-7}$,$\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \rightarrow \bar{D}^{*0}\phi)=(2.2\pm0.5\pm0.2\pm0.2)\times10^{-6}$. In these results, the first uncertainties are statistical, the second systematic, and the third is related to the branching fraction of the $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}K^{+}K^{-}$ decay, used for normalisation. By combining the branching fractions of the decays $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{(*)0}\phi$ and $B^{0}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{(*)0}\omega$, the $\omega$-$\phi$ mixing angle $\delta$ is constrained to be $\tan^2\delta = (3.6\pm0.7\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. An updated measurement of the branching fractions of the $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow \bar{D}^{(*)0}\phi$ decays, which can be used to determine the CKM angle $\gamma$, leads to $\mathcal{B}(B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{0}\phi)=(2.30\pm0.10 \pm 0.11\pm0.20)\times10^{-5}$,$\mathcal{B}(B^{0}_{s}\rightarrow\bar{D}^{*0}\phi) =(3.17\pm0.16 \pm 0.17 \pm 0.27)\times10^{-5}$.

Measurement of the ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D^{*})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{0})$

The ratios of branching fractions $\mathcal{R}(D^{*})\equiv\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}\to D^{*}\tau^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\tau})/\mathcal{B}(\bar{B}\to D^{*}\mu^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\mu})$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{0})\equiv\mathcal{B}(B^{-}\to D^{0}\tau^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\tau})/\mathcal{B}(B^{-}\to D^{0}\mu^{-}\bar{\nu}_{\mu})$ are measured, assuming isospin symmetry, using a sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb${ }^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The tau lepton is identified in the decay mode $\tau^{-}\to\mu^{-}\nu_{\tau}\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D^{*})=0.281\pm0.018\pm0.024$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{0})=0.441\pm0.060\pm0.066$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these measurements is $\rho=-0.43$. Results are consistent with the current average of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the predictions based on lepton flavor universality in the Standard Model.

Search for $K^0_{\mathrm{S(L)}}\to\mu^+\mu^-\mu^+\mu^-$ decays at LHCb

A search for $K_{\textrm{S(L)}}^0\rightarrow\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ decays is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.1 $fb^{-1}$. No evidence for signal is found. The 90\% confidence level upper limits are the first set for both decays and are $B(K_{\textrm{S}}^0\rightarrow\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}) < 5.1\times 10^{-12}$ and $B(K_{\textrm{L}}^0\rightarrow\mu^{+}\mu^{-}\mu^{+}\mu^{-}) < 2.3\times 10^{-9}$.

Charmonium production in $p$Ne collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=68.5$ GeV

The measurement of charmonium states produced in proton-neon ($p$Ne) collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is presented. The production of $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ mesons is studied with a beam of 2.5 TeV protons colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=68.5$ GeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of $21.7\pm 1.4 $ nb$^{-1}$. The $J/\psi$ and $\psi(2S)$ hadrons are reconstructed in $\mu^+\mu^-$ final states. The $J/\psi$ production cross-section per target nucleon in the centre-of-mass rapidity range $y^{*}\in [-2.29, 0]$ is found to be $506 \pm 8 \pm 25 \textrm{ nb/nucleon}$. The $\psi(2S)$ to $J/\psi$ relative production rate is found to be $(1.67 \pm 0.27\pm 0.10)\%$ in good agreement with other measurements involving beam and target nuclei of similar sizes.

$J/\psi$ and $D^0$ production in $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV PbNe collisions

The first measurement of $J/\psi$ and $D^0$ production in PbNe collisions by the LHCb experiment in its fixed-target configuration is reported. The production of $J/\psi$ and $D^0$ mesons is studied with a beam of lead ions with an energy of 2.5 TeV per nucleon colliding on gaseous neon targets at rest, corresponding to a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 68.5 GeV. The $J/\psi/D^0$ production cross-section ratio is studied as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum and collision centrality. These data are compared with measurements from $p$Ne collisions at the same energy and show no difference in the observed $J/\psi$ suppresion trend when comparing $p$Ne and PbNe peripheral collisions with PbNe central collisions.

Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in $Z$-tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$13 TeV

Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against a $Z$ boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 $< p_{\textrm{T}} < 100$ GeV and in the pseudorapidity range $2.5 < \eta < 4$. The data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb$^{-1}$. Triple differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.

Study of $B_c^+$ meson decays to charmonia plus multihadron final states

Four decay modes of the $B_c^+$ meson into a $J/\psi$ meson and multiple charged kaons or pions are studied using proton-proton collision data, collected with the~LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13~TeV and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9$~fb$^{-1}$. The decay $B_c^+\to J/\psi K^+ K^- \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ is observed for the first time, and evidence for the $B_c^+\to J/\psi 4\pi^+ 3\pi^-$ decay is found. The decay $B_c^+\to J/\psi 3\pi^+ 2\pi^-$ is observedand and the previous observation of the $B_c^+\to\psi(2S) \pi^+ \pi^+ \pi^-$ decay is confirmed using the $\psi(2S) \to J/\psi \pi^+ \pi^-$ decay mode. Ratios of the branching fractions of these four $B_c^+$ decay channels are measured.

Model-independent measurement of charm mixing parameters in $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^0 ( \rightarrow K_S^0 \pi^+ \pi^-) \mu^- \bar{\nu}_\mu X$ decays

A measurement of charm mixing and $CP$-violating parameters is reported, using $\bar{B} \rightarrow D^0 ( \rightarrow K_S^0 \pi^+ \pi^-) \mu^- \bar{\nu}_\mu X$ decays reconstructed in proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment during the years 2016 to 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb$^{-1}$. The measured mixing and $CP$-violating parameters are $$x_{\rm CP} = [ \,\,\,\,\,4.29 \pm 1.48 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.26 \mbox{(syst)} ] \times 10^{-3}\,,$$ $$y_{\rm CP} = [ \,\,12.61 \pm 3.12 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.83 \mbox{(syst)} ] \times 10^{-3} \,,$$ $$\Delta x \,\,= [ -0.77 \pm 0.93 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.28 \mbox{(syst)} ] \times 10^{-3} \,,$$ $$\Delta y \, = [ \,\,\,\,\,3.01 \pm 1.92 \mbox{(stat)} \pm 0.26 \mbox{(syst)} ] \times 10^{-3} \,.$$ The results are complementary to and consistent with previous measurements. A combination with the recent LHCb analysis of $D^{*+} \rightarrow D^0 ( \rightarrow K_S^0 \pi^+ \pi^-) \pi^+ $ decays is reported.

Amplitude analysis of the $D^+\to\pi^- \pi^+\pi^+$ decay and measurement of the $\pi^-\pi^+$ S-wave amplitude

An amplitude analysis of the $D^+ \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+$ decay is performed with a sample corresponding to $1.5\rm fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity of $pp$ collisions at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=8$ TeV collected by the LHCb detector in 2012. The sample contains approximately six hundred thousand candidates with a signal purity of $95\%$. The resonant structure is studied through a fit to the Dalitz plot where the $\pi^- \pi^+$ S-wave amplitude is extracted as a function of $\pi^-\pi^+$ mass, and spin-1 and spin-2 resonances are included coherently through an isobar model. The S-wave component is found to be dominant, followed by the $\rho(770)^0\pi^+$ and $f_2(1270)\pi^+$ components. A small contribution from the $\omega(782)\to\pi^-\pi^+$ decay is seen for the first time in the $D^+ \to \pi^- \pi^+ \pi^+$ decay.

Direct $CP$ violation in charmless three-body decays of $B^{\pm}$ mesons

Measurements of $CP$ asymmetries in charmless three-body decays of $B^\pm$ mesons are reported using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9$\,$fb$^{-1}$. The previously observed $CP$ asymmetry in $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm K^+ K^-$ decays is confirmed, and $CP$ asymmetries are observed with a significance of more than five standard deviations in the $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $B^\pm \to K^\pm K^+ K^-$ decays, while the $CP$ asymmetry of $B^\pm \to K^\pm \pi^+ \pi^-$ decays is confirmed to be compatible with zero. The distributions of these asymmetries are also studied as a function of the three-body phase space and suggest contributions from rescattering and resonance interference processes. An indication of the presence of the decays $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm \chi_{c0}(1P)$ in both $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm \pi^+ \pi^-$ and $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm K^+ K^-$ decays is observed, as is $CP$ violation involving these amplitudes.

Search for direct $CP$ violation in charged charmless $B \to PV$ decays

Measurements of $CP$ asymmetry in charmless $B\to PV$ decays are presented, where $P$ and $V$ denote a pseudoscalar and a vector meson, respectively. Five different $B\to PV$ decays from four final states, $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm \pi^+ \pi^-$, $B^\pm \to K^\pm \pi^+ \pi^-$, $B^\pm \to K^\pm K^+ K^-$ and $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm K^+ K^-$ are analyzed. The measurements are based on a method that does not require full amplitude analyses, and are performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by LHCb between 2015 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.9 fb$^{-1}$. In the $\pi^+ \pi^-$ $\textit{P}$-wave, in the region dominated by the $B^\pm \to \rho(770)^0 K^\pm$ decay, a $CP$ asymmetry of $\mbox{$A_{CP}$ = +0.150 $\pm$ 0.019 $\pm$ 0.011}$ is measured, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This is the first observation of $CP$ violation in this process. For the other four decay channels, in regions dominated by the $B^\pm \to \rho(770)^0 \pi^\pm$, $B^\pm \to \overset{(-)}{K^*}(892)^0 \pi^\pm$, $B^\pm \to \overset{(-)}{K^*}(892)^0 K^\pm$ and $B^\pm \to \phi(1020) K^\pm$ decays, $CP$ asymmetries in the $\textit{P}$-wave compatible with zero are measured.

Measurement of $CP$ asymmetries in $D^+_{(s)}\rightarrow \eta \pi^+$ and $D^+_{(s)}\rightarrow \eta^{\prime} \pi^+$ decays

Searches for $CP$ violation in the decays $D^+_{(s)}\rightarrow \eta \pi^+$ and $D^+_{(s)}\rightarrow \eta^{\prime} \pi^+$ are performed using $pp$ collision data corresponding to 6 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity collected by the LHCb experiment. The calibration channels $D^+_{(s)}\rightarrow \phi \pi^+$ are used to remove production and detection asymmetries. The resulting $CP$-violating asymmetries are $A^{CP}(D^+ \rightarrow \eta \pi^+) = (0.34 \pm 0.66 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.05)\%$, $A^{CP}(D^+_s \rightarrow \eta \pi^+) = (0.32 \pm 0.51 \pm 0.12)\%$, $A^{CP}(D^+ \rightarrow \eta^{\prime} \pi^+) = (0.49 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.05)\%$, $A^{CP}(D^+_s \rightarrow \eta^{\prime} \pi^+) = (0.01 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.08)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third, relevant for the $D^+$ channels, is due to the uncertainty on $A^{CP}(D^+ \to \phi \pi^+)$. These measurements, currently the most precise for three of the four channels considered, are consistent with the absence of $CP$ violation. A combination of these results with previous LHCb measurements is presented.

Angular analysis of the rare decay $B_s^0\to\phi\mu^+\mu^-$

An angular analysis of the rare decay $B^0_s\rightarrow\phi\mu^+\mu^-$ is presented, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of $7$, $8$ and $13~\rm{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $8.4~\rm{fb}^{-1}$. The observables describing the angular distributions of the decay $B^0_s\rightarrow\phi\mu^+\mu^-$ are determined in regions of $q^2$, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions.

Amplitude analysis of $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm K^+ K^-$ decays

The first amplitude analysis of the $B^\pm \to \pi^\pm K^+ K^-$ decay is reported based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of $pp$ collisions recorded in 2011 and 2012 with the LHCb detector. The data is found to be best described by a coherent sum of five resonant structures plus a nonresonant component and a contribution from $\pi\pi \leftrightarrow KK$ $S$-wave rescattering. The dominant contributions in the $\pi^\pm K^\mp$ and $K^{+}K^{-}$ systems are the nonresonant and the $B^\pm \to \rho(1450)^{0}\pi^{\pm}$ amplitudes, respectively, with fit fractions around $30\%$. For the rescattering contribution, a sizeable fit fraction is observed. This component has the largest $CP$ asymmetry reported to date for a single amplitude of $(-66 \pm 4 \pm 2)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. No significant $CP$ violation is observed in the other contributions.

Amplitude analysis of the $B_{(s)} \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ decays and measurement of the branching fraction of the $B \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ decay

The $B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ and $B^0_s \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}$ decays are studied using proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3fb$^{-1}$. An untagged and time-integrated amplitude analysis of $B^0_{(s)} \to (K^+\pi^-)(K^-\pi^+) $ decays in two-body invariant mass regions of 150 MeV$/c^2$ around the $K^{*0}$ mass is performed. A stronger longitudinal polarisation fraction in the ${B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}}$ decay, ${f_L = 0.724 \pm 0.051 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.016 \,({\rm syst})}$, is observed as compared to ${f_L = 0.240 \pm 0.031 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.025 \,({\rm syst})}$ in the ${B^0_s\to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}}$ decay. The ratio of branching fractions of the two decays is measured and used to determine $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to K^{*0} \overline{K}^{*0}) = (8.0 \pm 0.9 \,({\rm stat}) \pm 0.4 \,({\rm syst})) \times 10^{-7}$.
