The shifted bilinear Hilbert transform

We prove $L^p$ estimates for the shifted bilinear Hilbert transform, with a polylogarithmic bound in the size of the shift. As applications, we obtain $r$-variation estimates for bilinear ergodic averages in the sharp range $r > 2$, a sharp bilinear H\"ormander multiplier theorem, and a $\log$-Dini theorem for bilinear singular integrals.

An SU(2n)-valued nonlinear Fourier transform

We define a nonlinear Fourier transform which maps sequences of contractive $n \times n$ matrices to $SU(2n)$-valued functions on the circle $\mathbb{T}$. We characterize the image of finitely supported sequences and square-summable sequences on the half-line, and construct an inverse for $SU(2n)$-valued functions whose diagonal $n \times n$ blocks are outer matrix functions. As an application, we relate this nonlinear Fourier transform with quantum signal processing over $U(2n)$ and multivariate quantum signal processing.

Quantitative Polynomial Wiener-Wintner Theorems

We prove quantitative polynomial Wiener--Wintner theorems in a very general setup, including measure-preserving actions of nilpotent Lie groups. Our results apply both to ergodic averages and to averages with singular integral weights. The proof relies on the generalized polynomial Carleson theorem developed in the companion paper by van Doorn, Srivastava, and the authors.

Approximating the operator norm of local Hamiltonians via few quantum states

Consider a Hermitian operator $A$ acting on a complex Hilbert space of dimension $2^n$. We show that when $A$ has small degree in the Pauli expansion, or in other words, $A$ is a local $n$-qubit Hamiltonian, its operator norm can be approximated independently of $n$ by maximizing $|\braket{\psi|A|\psi}|$ over a small collection $\mathbf{X}_n$ of product states $\ket{\psi}\in (\mathbf{C}^{2})^{\otimes n}$. More precisely, we show that whenever $A$ is $d$-local, \textit{i.e.,} $\deg(A)\le d$, we have the following discretization-type inequality: \[ \|A\|\le C(d)\max_{\psi\in \mathbf{X}_n}|\braket{\psi|A|\psi}|. \] The constant $C(d)$ depends only on $d$. This collection $\mathbf{X}_n$ of $\psi$'s, termed a \emph{quantum norm design}, is independent of $A$, and consists of product states, and can have cardinality as small as $(1+\eps)^n$, which is essentially tight. Previously, norm designs were known only for homogeneous $d$-localHamiltonians $A$ \cite{L,BGKT,ACKK}, and for non-homogeneous $2$-local traceless $A$ \cite{BGKT}. Several other results, such as boundedness of Rademacher projections for all levels and estimates of operator norms of random Hamiltonians, are also given.

On Multi-linear Maximal Operators Along Homogeneous Curves

Suppose that \[ \vec{\gamma}(t) := (\gamma_1(t),\dots,\gamma_n(t)) = (a_1 t^{d_1},\dots,a_n t^{d_n}), \; \; \; 1\leq d_1 < \dots < d_n, \ a_i \neq 0\] is a homogeneous polynomial curve. We prove that whenever $p_1,\dots,p_n > 1$ and $\frac{1}{p} = \sum_{j=1}^n \frac{1}{p_j} \leq 1$, there exists an absolute constant $0 < C = C_{p_1,\dots,p_n;\vec{\gamma}} < \infty$ so that \[ \| \sup_{r > 0} \ \frac{1}{r} \int_{0}^r \prod_{i=1}^n |f_i(x-\gamma_i(t))| \ dt \|_{L^p(\mathbb{R})} \leq C \cdot \prod_{i=1}^n \| f_j \|_{L^{p_j}(\mathbb{R})}. \] Our main tool is a smoothing estimate, adapted from work of Kosz-Mirek-Peluse-Wright.

Carleson operators on doubling metric measure spaces

Doubling metric measure spaces provide a natural framework for singular integral operators. In contrast, the study of maximally modulated singular integral operators, the so-called Carleson operators, has largely been limited to Euclidean space with modulation functions such as polynomials defined by algebraic means. We present a general axiomatic approach to modulation functions on doubling metric measure spaces and prove $L^p$ bounds for the corresponding Carleson operators in Theorem 1.1 and Theorem 1.2. This generalizes classical and modern results on Carleson operators. In addition to the proofs presented here, our main results have been computer verified using the language Lean and the library mathlib, as documented in the sibling communication arXiv:2405.06423.

Fourier growth of degree $2$ polynomials

We prove bounds for the absolute sum of all level-$k$ Fourier coefficients for $(-1)^{p(x)}$, where polynomial $p:\mathbf{F}_2^n \to \mathbf{F}_2$ is of degree $1$ or degree $2$.

On trilinear singular Brascamp-Lieb integrals

We classify all trilinear singular Brascamp-Lieb forms, completing the classification in the two dimensional case by Demeter and Thiele in arXiv:0803.1268. We use known results in the representation theory of finite dimensional algebras, namely the classification of indecomposable representations of the four subspace quiver. Our classification lays out a roadmap for achieving bounds for all degenerate higher dimensional bilinear Hilbert transforms. As another step towards this goal, we prove new bounds for a particular class of forms that arises as a natural next candidate from our classification. We further prove conditional bounds for forms associated with mutually related representations. For this purpose we develop a method of rotations that allows us to decompose any homogeneous $d$-dimensional singular integral kernel into $(d-1)$-dimensional kernels on hyperplanes.

A blueprint for the formalization of Carleson's theorem on convergence of Fourier series

This paper is the blueprint underlying the Lean formalization of the proof of Carleson's classical result asserting almost everywhere convergence of Fourier series of continuous functions. We break up the proof into two steps, a reduction of the classical result to a new theorem that appears in a sibling communication and a proof of this new theorem, which is also detailed as blueprint in this paper. An early version of this blueprint was used to initiate the Lean formalization. During the formalization, many contributors elaborated the blueprint with minor corrections, modifications and extensions. The final version is presented here as a guide through the accompanying Lean code.

Discrete Brunn-Minkowski Inequality for subsets of the cube

We show that for all $A, B \subseteq \{0,1,2\}^{d}$ we have $$ |A+B|\geq (|A||B|)^{\log(5)/(2\log(3))}. $$ We also show that for all finite $A,B \subset \mathbb{Z}^{d}$, and any $V \subseteq\{0,1\}^{d}$ the inequality $$ |A+B+V|\geq |A|^{1/p}|B|^{1/q}|V|^{\log_{2}(p^{1/p}q^{1/q})} $$ holds for all $p \in (1, \infty)$, where $q=\frac{p}{p-1}$ is the conjugate exponent of $p$. All the estimates are dimension free with the best possible exponents. We discuss applications to various related problems.

A degree one Carleson operator along the paraboloid

We prove $L^p$ bounds, $\frac{d^2 + 4d + 2}{(d+1)^2} < p < 2(d+1)$, for maximal linear modulations of singular integrals along paraboloids with frequencies in certain subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^{d+1}$, for $d \geq 2$. This generalizes Carleson's theorem on convergence of Fourier series, and complements a corresponding result by Pierce and Yung with polynomial modulations without linear terms.

Dimension-free discretizations of the uniform norm by small product sets

Let $f$ be an analytic polynomial of degree at most $K-1$. A classical inequality of Bernstein compares the supremum norm of $f$ over the unit circle to its supremum norm over the sampling set of the $K$-th roots of unity. Many extensions of this inequality exist, often understood under the umbrella of Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund-type inequalities for $L^p,1\le p\leq \infty$ norms. We study dimension-free extensions of these discretization inequalities in the high-dimension regime, where existing results construct sampling sets with cardinality growing with the total degree of the polynomial. In this work we show that dimension-free discretizations are possible with sampling sets whose cardinality is independent of $\deg(f)$ and is instead governed by the maximum individual degree of $f$; i.e., the largest degree of $f$ when viewed as a univariate polynomial in any coordinate. For example, we find that for $n$-variate analytic polynomials $f$ of degree at most $d$ and individual degree at most $K-1$, $\|f\|_{L^\infty(\mathbf{D}^n)}\leq C(X)^d\|f\|_{L^\infty(X^n)}$ for any fixed $X$ in the unit disc $\mathbf{D}$ with $|X|=K$. The dependence on $d$ in the constant is tight for such small sampling sets, which arise naturally for example when studying polynomials of bounded degree coming from functions on products of cyclic groups. As an application we obtain a proof of the cyclic group Bohnenblust-Hille inequality with an explicit constant $O(\log K)^{2d}$.

Sharp Fourier extension for functions with localized support on the circle

A well known conjecture states that constant functions are extremizers of the $L^2 \to L^6$ Tomas-Stein extension inequality for the circle. We prove that functions supported in a $\sqrt{6}/80$-neighbourhood of a pair of antipodal points on $S^1$ satisfy the conjectured sharp inequality. In the process, we make progress on a programm formulated in arXiv:1509.06674 to prove the sharp inequality for all functions.

Maximal Polynomial Modulations of Singular Radon Transforms

We prove $L^2 \to L^p$ estimates on the torus for maximal polynomial modulations of Calder\'on-Zygmund operators with anisotropic scaling. We obtain improved constants in these estimates. As a corollary, maximal polynomial modulations of a mollified version of the Hilbert transform along the parabola are bounded with only logarithmic dependence of the estimate on the Lipschitz constant of the mollifier.
