Unified First-Principles Study of the Anomalous Hall Effect Based on Exact Muffin-Tin Orbitals

Based on the exact muffin-tin orbitals (EMTOs), we developed a first-principles method to calculate the current operators and investigated the anomalous Hall effect in bcc Fe as an example, with which we successfully separated the skew scattering contribution from the side jump and intrinsic contributions by fitting the scaling law with the introduction of sparse impurities. By investigating the temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall effect in bulk Fe, we predicted a fluctuated anomalous Hall angle as a function of temperature when considering only phonons, which, in the future, can be measured in experiments by suppressing magnon excitation, e.g., by applying a high external magnetic field.

Simulation of an imaging system for internal contamination of lungs using MPA-MURA coded aperture collimator

The nuclides inhaled during nuclear accidents usually cause internal contamination of the lungs with low activity. Although a parallel-hole imaging system, which is widely used in medical gamma cameras, has a high resolution and good image quality, owing to its extremely low detection efficiency, it remains difficult to obtain images of inhaled lung contamination. In this study, the Monte Carlo method was used to study the internal lung contamination imaging using the MPA-MURA coded-aperture collimator. The imaging system consisted of an adult male lung model, with a mosaicked, pattern-centered, and anti-symmetric MURA coded-aperture collimator model and a CsI(Tl) detector model. The MLEM decoding algorithm was used to reconstruct the internal contamination image, and the complementary imaging method was used to reduce the number of artifacts. The full width at half maximum of the I-131 point source image reconstructed by the mosaicked, pattern-centered, and anti-symmetric Modified uniformly redundant array (MPA-MURA) coded-aperture imaging reached 2.51 mm, and the signal-to-noise ratio of the simplified respiratory tract source (I-131) image reconstructed through MPA-MURA coded-aperture imaging was 3.98 dB. Although the spatial resolution of MPA-MURA coded aperture imaging is not as good as that of parallel-hole imaging, the detection efficiency of PMA-MURA coded-aperture imaging is two orders of magnitude higher than that of parallel hole collimator imaging. Considering the low activity level of internal lung contamination caused by nuclear accidents, PMA-MURA coded-aperture imaging has significant potential for the development of lung contamination imaging.

Robust Output Feedback Stabilization of Multivariable Invertible Nonlinear Systems: A Feedback Linearization-Based Method

This note studies the robust output feedback stabilization problem of a class of multi-input multi-output invertible nonlinear systems, for which an "ideal" state feedback based on feedback linearization can be designed under certain mild assumptions. By systematically designing a set of extended low-power high-gain observers, we show that this "ideal" linearizing feedback law can be approximately estimated, which provides a robust output feedback stabilizer such that the origin of the resulting closed-loop system is semiglobally asymptotically stable.

Differentially Private Distributed Computation via Public-Private Communication Networks

This paper studies the problem of multi-agent computation under the differential privacy requirement of the agents' local datasets against eavesdroppers having node-to-node communications. We first propose for the network equipped with public-private networks. The private network is sparse and not even necessarily connected, over which communications are encrypted and secure along with the intermediate node states; the public network is connected and may be dense, over which communications are allowed to be public. In this setting, we propose a multi-gossip PPSC mechanism over the private network, where at each step, randomly selected node pairs update their states in such a way that they are shuffled with random noise while maintaining summation consistency. We show that this mechanism can achieve any desired differential privacy level with any prescribed probability. Next, we embed this mechanism in distributed computing processes, and propose privacy-guarantee protocols for three basic computation tasks, where an adaptive mechanism adjusts the amount of noise injected in PPSC steps for privacy protection, and the number of regular computation steps for accuracy guarantee. For average consensus, we develop a PPSC-Gossip averaging consensus algorithm by utilizing the multi-gossip PPSC mechanism for privacy encryption before an averaging consensus algorithm over the public network for local computations. For network linear equations and distributed convex optimization, we develop two respective distributed computing protocols by following the PPSC-Gossip averaging consensus algorithm with an additional projection or gradient descent step within each step of computation. Given any privacy and accuracy requirements, it is shown that all three proposed protocols can compute their corresponding problems with the desired computation accuracy, while achieving the desired differential privacy.

Filtered pseudo-scalar dark matter and gravitational waves from first order phase transition

If dark matter (DM) acquires mass during a first order phase transition, there will be a filtering-out effect when DM enters the expanding bubble. In this paper we study the filtering-out effect for a pseudo-scalar DM, whose mass may partially come from a first order phase transition in the hidden sector. We calculate the ratio of DM that may enter the bubble for various bubble wall velocities as well as various status of DM (in the thermal equilibrium, or out of the thermal equilibrium) at the time of phase transition, which results in small penetration rate that may affect the final relic abundance of the DM. We further study the stochastic gravitational wave signals emitted by the hidden sector phase transition at the space-based interferometer experiments as the smoking-gun of this model.

Structure effect on intrinsic piezoelectricity in septuple-atomic-layer $\mathrm{MSi_2N_4}$ (M=Mo and W)

The recently experimentally synthesized monolayer $\mathrm{MoSi_2N_4}$ and $\mathrm{WSi_2N_4}$ (\textcolor[rgb]{0.00,0.00,1.00}{Science 369, 670-674 (2020})) lack inversion symmetry, which allows them to become piezoelectric. In this work, based on ab initio calculations, we report structure effect on intrinsic piezoelectricity in septuple-atomic-layer $\mathrm{MSi_2N_4}$ (M=Mo and W), and six structures ($α_i$ ($i$=1 to 6)) are considered with the same space group. It is found that $\mathrm{MSi_2N_4}$ (M=Mo and W) with $α_i$ ($i$=1 to 6) all are indirect band gap semiconductors. Calculated results show that $\mathrm{MoSi_2N_4}$ and $\mathrm{WSi_2N_4}$ monolayers have the same structural dependence on piezoelectric strain and stress coefficients ($d_{11}$ and $e_{11}$), together with the ionic and electronic contributions to $e_{11}$.Finally, we investigate the intrinsic piezoelectricity of monolayer $\mathrm{MA_2Z_4}$ (M=Cr, Mo and W; A=Si and Ge; Z=N and P) with $α_1$ and $α_2$ phases expect $\mathrm{CrGe_2N_4}$, because they all are semiconductors and their enthalpies of formation between $α_1$ and $α_2$ phases are very close. The most important result is that monolayer $\mathrm{MA_2Z_4}$ containing P atom have more stronger piezoelectric polarization than one including N atom. The largest $d_{11}$ among $\mathrm{MA_2N_4}$ materials is 1.85 pm/V, which is close to the smallest $d_{11}$ of 1.65 pm/V in $\mathrm{MA_2P_4}$ monolayers. For $\mathrm{MA_2P_4}$, the largest $d_{11}$ is up to 6.12 pm/V. Among the 22 monolayers, $α_1$-$\mathrm{CrSi_2P_4}$, $α_1$-$\mathrm{MoSi_2P_4}$, $α_1$-$\mathrm{CrGe_2P_4}$, $α_1$-$\mathrm{MoGe_2P_4}$ and $α_2$-$\mathrm{CrGe_2P_4}$ have large $d_{11}$, which are greater than or close to 5 pm/V, a typical value for bulk piezoelectric materials.

Improved simulation of El Niño and its influence on the climate anomalies of the East Asia-western North Pacific in the ICM Version 2

This study introduces the second version of the Integrated Climate Model (ICM). ICM is developed by the Center for Monsoon System Research, Institute of Atmospheric Physics to improve the short-term climate prediction of the East Asia-western North Pacific (EA-WNP). The main update of the second version of ICM (ICM.V2) relative to the first version (ICM.V1) is the improvement of the horizontal resolution of the atmospheric model from T31 spectral resolution (3.75°*3.75°) to T63 (1.875°*1.875°). As a result, some important factors for the short-term climate prediction of the EA-WNP is apparently improved from ICM.V1 to ICM.V2, including the climatological SST, the rainfall and circulation of the East Asian summer monsoon, and the variability and spatial pattern of ENSO. The impact of El Niño on the EA-WNP climate simulated in ICM.V2 is also improved with more realistic anticyclonic anomalies and precipitation pattern over the EA-WNP. The tropical Indian ocean capacitor effect and the WNP local air-sea interaction feedback, two popular mechanisms to explain the impact of El Niño on the EA-WNP climate is also realistically reproduced in ICM.V2, much improved relative to that in ICM.V1.

Multipliers Correction Methods for Optimization Problems over the Stiefel Manifold

We propose a class of multipliers correction methods to minimize a differentiable function over the Stiefel manifold. The proposed methods combine a function value reduction step with a proximal correction step. The former one searches along an arbitrary descent direction in the Euclidean space instead of a vector in the tangent space of the Stiefel manifold. Meanwhile, the latter one minimizes a first-order proximal approximation of the objective function in the range space of the current iterate to make Lagrangian multipliers associated with orthogonality constraints symmetric at any accumulation point. The global convergence has been established for the proposed methods. Preliminary numerical experiments demonstrate that the new methods significantly outperform other state-of-the-art first-order approaches in solving various kinds of testing problems.

Learning geometry-image representation for 3D point cloud generation

We study the problem of generating point clouds of 3D objects. Instead of discretizing the object into 3D voxels with huge computational cost and resolution limitations, we propose a novel geometry image based generator (GIG) to convert the 3D point cloud generation problem to a 2D geometry image generation problem. Since the geometry image is a completely regular 2D array that contains the surface points of the 3D object, it leverages both the regularity of the 2D array and the geodesic neighborhood of the 3D surface. Thus, one significant benefit of our GIG is that it allows us to directly generate the 3D point clouds using efficient 2D image generation networks. Experiments on both rigid and non-rigid 3D object datasets have demonstrated the promising performance of our method to not only create plausible and novel 3D objects, but also learn a probabilistic latent space that well supports the shape editing like interpolation and arithmetic.

Decoding PPP Corrections from BDS B2b Signals Using a Software-defined Receiver: an Initial Performance Evaluation

With the rapid development of China's BeiDou Navigation Satellite System(BDS), the application of real-time precise point positioning (RTPPP) based on BDS has become an active research area in the field of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). BDS has provided the service of broadcasting RTPPP information. It indicates that BDS has become the second satellite system that provides RTPPP services, following Galileo among the GNSS, but work based on this direction has yet to be explored. Therefore, this paper evaluates the performance of precise point positioning (PPP) service using a software-defined receiver (SDR). An experiment was carried out tu verify the feasibility of the SDR. The PPP-B2b signal was processed to obtain PPP service information, including orbit corrections, clock corrections, and differential code bias corrections. The time-varying attributes of these corrections of BDS and GPS are evaluated, and the integrity and stability of the PPP service were analyzed. The results show the PPP-B2b signal can stably provide PPP services for staellites in the Asia-Pacific region, including centimeter to decimeter-level orbit corrections and meter-level clock correction for GPS satellites. Finally, detection tip for bitream availability in SDR is proposed. Some content which is not defined in the official document, such as the PPP-B2b frame arrangement, various correction update cycles and the progress of PPP service are discussed.

Moiré metrology of energy landscapes in van der Waals heterostructures

The emerging field of twistronics, which harnesses the twist angle between two-dimensional materials, represents a promising route for the design of quantum materials, as the twist-angle-induced superlattices offer means to control topology and strong correlations. At the small twist limit, and particularly under strain, as atomic relaxation prevails, the emergent moiré superlattice encodes elusive insights into the local interlayer interaction. Here we introduce moiré metrology as a combined experiment-theory framework to probe the stacking energy landscape of bilayer structures at the 0.1 meV/atom scale, outperforming the gold-standard of quantum chemistry. Through studying the shapes of moiré domains with numerous nano-imaging techniques, and correlating with multi-scale modelling, we assess and refine first-principle models for the interlayer interaction. We document the prowess of moiré metrology for three representative twisted systems: bilayer graphene, double bilayer graphene and H-stacked $MoSe_2/WSe_2$. Moiré metrology establishes sought after experimental benchmarks for interlayer interaction, thus enabling accurate modelling of twisted multilayers.

Multi-AI competing and winning against humans in iterated Rock-Paper-Scissors game

Predicting and modeling human behavior and finding trends within human decision-making processes is a major problem of social science. Rock Paper Scissors (RPS) is the fundamental strategic question in many game theory problems and real-world competitions. Finding the right approach to beat a particular human opponent is challenging. Here we use an AI (artificial intelligence) algorithm based on Markov Models of one fixed memory length (abbreviated as "single AI") to compete against humans in an iterated RPS game. We model and predict human competition behavior by combining many Markov Models with different fixed memory lengths (abbreviated as "multi-AI"), and develop an architecture of multi-AI with changeable parameters to adapt to different competition strategies. We introduce a parameter called "focus length" (a positive number such as 5 or 10) to control the speed and sensitivity for our multi-AI to adapt to the opponent's strategy change. The focus length is the number of previous rounds that the multi-AI should look at when determining which Single-AI has the best performance and should choose to play for the next game. We experimented with 52 different people, each playing 300 rounds continuously against one specific multi-AI model, and demonstrated that our strategy could win against more than 95% of human opponents.

w-Net: Dual Supervised Medical Image Segmentation Model with Multi-Dimensional Attention and Cascade Multi-Scale Convolution

Deep learning-based medical image segmentation technology aims at automatic recognizing and annotating objects on the medical image. Non-local attention and feature learning by multi-scale methods are widely used to model network, which drives progress in medical image segmentation. However, those attention mechanism methods have weakly non-local receptive fields' strengthened connection for small objects in medical images. Then, the features of important small objects in abstract or coarse feature maps may be deserted, which leads to unsatisfactory performance. Moreover, the existing multi-scale methods only simply focus on different sizes of view, whose sparse multi-scale features collected are not abundant enough for small objects segmentation. In this work, a multi-dimensional attention segmentation model with cascade multi-scale convolution is proposed to predict accurate segmentation for small objects in medical images. As the weight function, multi-dimensional attention modules provide coefficient modification for significant/informative small objects features. Furthermore, The cascade multi-scale convolution modules in each skip-connection path are exploited to capture multi-scale features in different semantic depth. The proposed method is evaluated on three datasets: KiTS19, Pancreas CT of Decathlon-10, and MICCAI 2018 LiTS Challenge, demonstrating better segmentation performances than the state-of-the-art baselines.

Continuous matrix product operator approach to finite temperature quantum states

We present an algorithm for studying quantum systems at finite temperature using continuous matrix product operator representation. The approach handles both short-range and long-range interactions in the thermodynamic limit without incurring any time discretization error. Moreover, the approach provides direct access to physical observables including the specific heat, local susceptibility, and local spectral functions. After verifying the method using the prototypical quantum XXZ chains, we apply it to quantum Ising models with power-law decaying interactions and on the infinite cylinder, respectively. The approach offers predictions that are relevant to experiments in quantum simulators and the nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice relaxation rate.

Cm2 Scale Synthesis of MoTe2 Thin Films with Large Grains and Layer Control David

Owing to the small energy differences between its polymorphs, MoTe2 can access a full spectrum of electronic states, from the 2H semiconducting state to the 1T semimetallic state, and from the Td Weyl semimetallic state to the superconducting state in the 1T and Td phase at low temperature. Thus, it is a model system for phase transformation studies as well as quantum phenomena such as the quantum spin Hall effect and topological superconductivity. Careful studies of MoTe2 and its potential applications require large area MoTe2 thin films with high crystallinity and thickness control. Here, we present cm2 scale synthesis of 2H MoTe2 thin films with layer control and large grains that span several microns. Layer control is achieved by controlling the initial thickness of the precursor MoOx thin films, which are deposited on sapphire substrates by atomic layer deposition and subsequently tellurized. Despite the van der Waals epitaxy, the precursor-substrate interface is found to critically determine the uniformity in thickness and grain size of the resulting MoTe2 films: MoTe2 grown on sapphire show uniform films while MoTe2 grown on amorphous SiO2 substrates form islands. This synthesis strategy decouples the layer control from the variabilities of growth conditions for robust growth results, and is applicable to grow other transition metal dichalcogenides with layer control.

ASMFS: Adaptive-Similarity-based Multi-modality Feature Selection for Classification of Alzheimer's Disease

With the increasing amounts of high-dimensional heterogeneous data to be processed, multi-modality feature selection has become an important research direction in medical image analysis. Traditional methods usually depict the data structure using fixed and predefined similarity matrix for each modality separately, without considering the potential relationship structure across different modalities. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-modality feature selection method, which performs feature selection and local similarity learning simultaniously. Specially, a similarity matrix is learned by jointly considering different imaging modalities. And at the same time, feature selection is conducted by imposing sparse l_{2, 1} norm constraint. The effectiveness of our proposed joint learning method can be well demonstrated by the experimental results on Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset, which outperforms existing the state-of-the-art multi-modality approaches.

Dark matter, electroweak phase transition and gravitational wave in the type-II two-Higgs-doublet model with a singlet scalar field

In the framework of type-II two-Higgs-doublet model with a singlet scalar dark matter $S$, we study the dark matter observables, the electroweak phase transition, and the gravitational wave signals by such strongly first order phase transition after imposing the constraints of the LHC Higgs data. We take the heavy CP-even Higgs $H$ as the only portal between the dark matter and SM sectors, and find the LHC Higgs data and dark matter observables require $m_S$ and $m_H$ to be larger than 130 GeV and 360 GeV for $m_A=600$ GeV in the case of the 125 GeV Higgs with the SM-like coupling. Next, we carve out some parameter space where a strongly first order electroweak phase transition can be achieved, and find benchmark points for which the amplitudes of gravitational wave spectra reach the sensitivities of the future gravitational wave detectors.
