Accurate feeding of nano antenna by polarization singularities for lateral and rotational displacement sensing

Addressing subwavelength object and displacement is crucial in optical nanometrology. We show in this Letter that nano antennas with subwavelength structures can be addressed precisely by incident beams with singularity. This accurate feeding beyond the diffraction limit can lead to dynamic control of the unidirectional scattering in the far field. The combination of polarization discontinuity of the incoming singular beam, along with the rapid phase variation near the antenna leads to remarkable sensitivity of the far field scattering to displacement at deep subwavelength scale. This opens a far field deep subwavelength postion detection method based on the interaction of singular optics with nano antennas.

Excitation of radiationless anapole mode of isotropic dielectric nanoparticles with tightly focused radially polarized beam

A high index dielectric nano-sphere can be excited and yet remain radiationless. A method to excite the non-radiating anapole mode of a high index isotropic dielectric nanosphere is presented. With tightly focused radially polarized beam illumination, the main-contributing electric dipole mode and magnetic modes can be zero with only a weak electric quadruple contributing to the total scattering. Further, with a standing wave illumination formed by two counter-propagating focused radially polarized beam under $4π$ configuration, the ideal radiationless ananpole can be excited.

Shaping the focal field of radially/azimuthally polarized phase vortex with Zernike polynomials

The focal field properties of radially/azimuthally polarized Zernike polynomials are studied. A method to design the pupil field in order to shape the focal field of radially or azimuthally polarized phase vortex is introduced. With this method, we are able to obtain a pupil field to achieve a longitudinally polarized hollow spot with a depth of focus up to $12λ$ and $0.14λ$ lateral resolution for a optical system with numerical aperture 0.99; A pupil field to generate 8 circularly polarized focal spots along the optical axis is also obtained with this method.

Broadband active tuning of unidirectional scattering from nanoantenna using combined radially and azimuthally polarized beams

We propose an approach to actively tune the scattering pattern of a Mie-type spherical antenna. The scheme is based on separate control over the induced electric dipole and induced magnetic dipole using two coherent focused beams of radial polarization and azimuthal polarization. By carefully tuning the amplitude and phase relation of the two beams, a broadband unidirectional scattering can be achieved, even at the wavelength where the antenna scatters most efficiently. By moving the focus of one beam, a drastic switch of the unidirectional scattering can be observed. Such scheme enables the design of ultra-compact optical switches and directional couplers based on nanoantennas.

Spreading in a shifting environment modeled by the diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary

We investigate the influence of a shifting environment on the spreading of an invasive species through a model given by the diffusive logistic equation with a free boundary. When the environment is homogeneous and favourable, this model was first studied in Du and Lin \cite{DL}, where a spreading-vanishing dichotomy was established for the long-time dynamics of the species, and when spreading happens, it was shown that the species invades the new territory at some uniquely determined asymptotic speed $c_0>0$. Here we consider the situation that part of such an environment becomes unfavourable, and the unfavourable range of the environment moves into the favourable part with speed $c>0$. We prove that when $c\geq c_0$, the species always dies out in the long-run, but when $0 0$ a parameter, then there exists $σ_0>0$ such that vanishing happens when $σ\in (0,σ_0)$, borderline spreading happens when $σ=σ_0$, and spreading happens when $σ>σ_0$.

Low artificial anisotropy cellular automaton model and its applications to the cell-to-dendrite transition in directional solidification

A low artificial anisotropy cellular automaton (CA) model is developed for the simulation of microstructure evolution in directional solidification. The CA model's capture rule was modified by a limited neighbor solid fraction (LNSF) method. Various interface curvature calculation methods have been compared. The simulated equilibrium shapes agree with the theoretical shapes, when the interface energy anisotropy coefficient is ε=0.01, ε=0.03 and ε=0.05, respectively. The low artificial anisotropy CA model is used in the numerical simulation of the cell-to-dendrite transition (CDT) in directional solidification. The influence of physical parameters (Γ, Dl, k0, ml) on CDT has been investigated. The main finding in this paper is the discovery of the changing behavior of the Vcd when the solute partition coefficient k0 is larger than a critical value. When k0 is less than 0.125, the Vcd follows the Kurz and Fisher criterion Vc/k0; while when k0>0.125, the Vcd equals to 8Vc. The experimental data of succinonitrile-acetone (SCN-ace, k0=0.1) and SCN-camphor (k0=0.33) support the conclusion from CA simulations.

Orientation selection of equiaxed dendritic growth by three-dimensional cellular automaton model

A three-dimensional (3-D) adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) cellular automata (CA) model is developed to simulate the equiaxed dendritic growth of pure substance. In order to reduce the mesh induced anisotropy by CA capture rules, a limited neighbor solid fraction (LNSF) method is presented. An expansion description using two interface free energy anisotropy parameters (\epsilon1, \epsilon2) is used in present 3-D CA model. The dendrite growths with the orientation selection between <100> and <110> are discussed using the different \epsilon1 with \epsilon2=-0.02. It is found that the simulated morphologies by present CA model are as expected from the minimum stiffness criterion.
